JP Behren's new book is a crime noir book with a unique take. “Murder in the Monashee Mountains” is the second book in the Travis Daniels Investigation series. Here's a look at the story:  After escaping the cursed streets of Arkham and Miskatonic University, Travis Daniels is on the run with his ward, Leslie Owens. While searching for a safe place to hide, they witness a savage murder in the woods of Monashee Mountain. Now, he is tasked by competing interests in the town of Tonasket to discover the truth behind the murder and recent sabotage to the local logging operation. The clock is ticking as ancient rivalries threaten the innocent people of the nearby towns, the local Native American Tribes, and the tenuous peace held between the sasquatch and were-wolves.  In this interview, JP talks about the first book in the series, “Missing in Miskatonic,” and how his new book picks up where the last left off. He talks about the creation of Travis Daniels and Leslie Owens and their roles in the new story. He goes into the two sides— sasquatch and were-wolves, and how he weaves these groups into the book. He also talks planning out the third book, and working with Crystal Lake Publishing.

A crack team of locals has a date with Innsmouth. They include: Kennedy Newell, a shell-shocked veteran; Freddy Thurman, a streetwise local bootlegger; Cora Loquillo, a medium and amateur photographer; Dr. Theo Rooke, a nervous academic; and Arthur Clark, an accountant with a sharp eye for detail. But first, they begin their search for answers, digging through the archives of Miskatonic University for clues about Innsmouth's dark and tangled history. Freddy and Arthur visit the university museum, where they encounter disturbing artifacts that hint at an inhuman past tied to the town. Meanwhile, when pride overtakes caution, Dr. Rooke is confronted with more truth than he's prepared to handle. Finally, Cora and Kennedy hold a séance in an attempt to pierce the veil and identify the strange, otherworldly presence that clings to the university grounds. In this episode, we continue our playthrough of the scenario “Escape From Innsmouth” by Kevin A. Ross and others, and published by Chaosium. This week we review Stuart Gordon's 1985 schlock classic: Re-animator. Does it go too far for modern audiences? Listen to find out. Synopsis Loosely based off of H.P. Lovecraft's short story “Herbert West - Reanimator” this film stars Jeffery Combs as Herbert West, a weird genius science student that just arrived at the Miskatonic University. He immediately clashes with his professor in asserting superior knowledge over theories surrounding brain death, and makes him an enemy. Also in his class is Dan Cain, who rents a room to Herbert. Dan is dating the dean's daughter and is mainly in this movie to be choked. As Herbert West experiments with a new serum, he discovers he has unlocked the secret to reanimating the dead. After confirming it's efficacy with small animals, he seeks to experiment on dead humans. Review of Re-Animator Re-animator pure B-movie schlock done right. It pulls no punches with intense gore, nudity, and dark humor. It's the spiritual sci-fi counterpart to Evil Dead, which came out four years earlier. Dennis Paoli, the writer, came from the world of experimental theater in Chicago, and he brought a solid foundation with a surprisingly tight script.  Both him and the director Stuart Gordon wanted to create an homage to Frankenstein, and succeeded with Re-Animator. It really does recapture some of the straight faced humor of the original 1930s Frankenstein, but turns up everything to 11. The special effects are sometimes laughably bad, but still endearing. Particularly the reanimated psycho cat is like something off of a cheap SNL sketch, but still ends up being very entertaining. They didn't even try to get a rating, since it would most likely get an X. Somehow they still toe the line for decency, editing some shots just right before they get too exploitative to ruin the fun. Mainly that's what this movie is: A lot of fun. This film should be studied for how to pull off low-budget campy horror. Score 10/10

We gather 'round dim candlelightTo delve where sanest avoid sight Into twisted worlds that Lovecraft penned Where cosmic terrors apprehensions rendThese truths not meant for mortal brainBut like those in Lovecraftian vein Drawn by fascination grim and dire To learn what none should e'er acquireAs films that try to emulateThe mythos they dare replicate They court revelation of the dire kind And risk what's left of human mindSo wish them well on nightmare quest That some humanity in them rest Pray that benign powers hear our plea To guard what's left of sanityJoin us, if you be so inclined As we descend into darkest mindWith Ray, Tommy, and Pete our guide Though fraying sanity be their plightThe doors of perception now open wide The black stars align, let terror inside Our ritual begins, the incantations unfold Beyond sanity's edge we now go boldOK, ok... as a trio, we didn't have the most extensive background in the works of Lovecraft. That's what makes the film adaptations the perfect fodder for this fair show. So, we did the work and watched a starter package of a bunch of films that are either direct adaptations or clearly influenced by the writing of Lovecraft, and we present our experience today. Want to watch along? Check out our Letterboxd list and get going!Lovecraft's fiction focused heavily on fear of the vast unknown universe, inherited evil, and his potential for mental collapse. Though not widely known during his lifetime, he developed a cult following for his weird tales published in pulp magazines in the 1920s-30s. Lovecraft helped popularize cosmic horror with recurring elements like the fictional Miskatonic University and entities like Cthulhu. He allowed other writers to borrow his ideas freely, helping spread his Cthulhu Mythos. After his 1937 death, his influence quietly grew until it permeated modern horror. His cosmic themes and tropes are now ubiquitous across literature, visual art, film, games, and pop culture. However, appreciation of his problematic views has lagged, sparking debates on separating his ideas from his beliefs. Many films have adapted Lovecraft's stories or integrated his themes. The Haunted Palace, The Dunwich Horror, Re-Animator, and other direct adaptations capture the tone of impending madness and futility in the face of elder gods. Meanwhile, The Thing, Prince of Darkness, In the Mouth of Madness, Annihilation, and The Lighthouse incorporate Lovecraftian elements into original narratives. Creative choices must be made to translate his verbose prose into visuals. Performances that show protagonists struggling to cling to sanity resonate as Lovecraftian. Later horror creators owe a debt to Lovecraft's brand of unknowable, cerebral fear.He was a troubled guy, and as filmmakers continue to reimagine the mythos, we're seeing updates to problematic elements while, in many cases, artfully preserving the essence of his disturbing philosophical horror. He is among many case examples of needing to separate the art from the artist, however, and some of the film adaptations are, frankly, much better than others. Still, you can't deny his influence on the art form. The Dunwich HorrorWritten by H.P. LovecraftPerformed by Mick DarkAudio Production by Mick DarkCover Art by Joseph Diaz josephdiaz.artstation.com "The Dunwich Horror" is a 1928 short story by cult-favorite horror author H.P. Lovecraft. The story is also part of a literary universe known as the “Cthulhu Mythos.” While the work was originally published in the magazine, “Weird Tales,” it has since been printed in many other forms.“The Dunwich Horror” is the story of the Whateleys and its relation to the Dunwich Horror, which happened in Dunwich, Massachusetts in 1928. The narrator is an unnamed third person narrator. The story begins with the explanation that the Dunwich Horror was covered up by the town. The narrative then shifts to a chronological recollection. The recollection starts with the birth of Wilbur Whateley, the son of a strange albino woman, Lavinia, and an unknown father. He lived with his mother and his grandfather, Old Whateley, also known as the Wizard Whateley. The boy grew incredibly fast in terms of mental capabilities, maturity, and height. Eventually, the boy's grandfather began teaching him about the occult and bought him many occult related books. The two also began renovating their property adding rooms and removing walls as if they were hiding something. After Lavinia disappeared and Old Whatley died, the boy began to search for the grimoire known as the Necronomicon for an unknown purpose. He eventually went to Miskatonic University and met the librarian, Dr. Armitage. He asked Armitage if he could borrow the untranslated copy of the work but Armitage refused. Armitage then looked at the book and learned that Wilbur was trying to do something nefarious. Not long after, Wilbur attempted to break into the Miskatonic University library in order to steal their copy of the Necronomicon. Wilbur was killed by a guard dog. His corpse revealed his true form, witnessed by Armitage and his colleagues Rice and Morgan. It was covered in tentacles and was rather unhuman. His body then disintegrated before their eyes. Not long after, the creature known as the Dunwich Horror escaped from the Whatley home and began nightly rampages throughout the town. The professors eventually learned of this and Armitage decided that he needed to act. Through his research, Armitage discovered that a spell could vanquish the Horror. The Horror made a path towards Sentinel Hill. A few days afterwards, the professors arrived and confronted the beast. They sprayed a powder on the being, revealing it to be rather similar to a mixture of Wilbur's true horrifying form and the Whately family's human members. Armitage and the professors chanted a spell at the beast until a lightning strike caused the monster to disappear. The narrator then describes that the entire ordeal was covered up.Twitter @MICKDARKVOICEReddit https://www.reddit.com/r/MickDark/Facebook https://bit.ly/3hCdEZe#mickdark #HPLovecraft #lovecraft #cult

This edition was collected on December 1st, 2020. Chaosium has released a new set of jigsaw puzzles over on their Redbubble store. The different puzzles include much of the iconic art from the company's run and includes many Call of Cthulhu and Runquest images. A number that are from the Berlin sourcebook that look really cool. The first Apocthulhu book is available in POD! Keeper Dave got his contributor copy and it's huge and colorful and lovely in many apocalyptic shapes and sizes.  You can get Free League's At the Mountains of Madness from their store now! It's a beautifully illustrated book, Keeper Jon already has a copy and can attest to it. Some news from Niels Hobbs and the Lovecraft Arts and Sciences Council that is pretty worrying for any of us that is hoping for a Necronomicon 2021. Niels has sent out an email and started a GoFundMe page to help cover expenses that have been incurred due to a lack of business because of COVID-19. He is asking for $30,000 in donations to help pay for rent, payroll, insurance, etc. Personally I have no issue helping them out and if I'm honest I feel a little bit guilty that I haven't bought more stuff from their online store in the past. As of recording he has raised roughly 1/3 of the total in about 12 hours. I really hope that this helps Niels out, and that this allows for the massive undertaking that is the planning for a conference like Necronomicon to proceed in the future. Personally, I can't imagine not going to Providence next year. It would seriously impact me if I was unable to go.  MUP Patreon If you haven't heard yet, we have redesigned our Patreon and so far   the feedback has been all positive! This edition was collected on November 20th, 2020. Paradox brings Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop game development back in-house, the company announced Thursday. This comes after Paradox yanked the product line from the then White Wolf company after many Alt-Right and LGBTQ+ worries arose from the 2018 Vampire 5th ed release. Paradox admitted to having little or no oversight of Whitewolf and gave the product line to Modiphius to develop. In the last two years Modiphius only released one product, Fall of London, in that time which tried to change game mechanics and mythology. So Paradox is now managing Vampire the Masquerade in house under the World of Darkness brand.  Chaosium is releasing the Alone Against The Tide PDF just in time for Thanksgiving for even more solo horror adventures. The PDF is less than $7. There's not just one but TWO Symbaroum Bundles of Holding. Symbaroum is Free League's dark fantasy setting, and the bundles are for sourcebooks for the SYMBAROUM dark-fantasy tabletop roleplaying game, as well as all the Symbaroum Settings a GM needs for adventure in the primeval forest of Davokar.  Mike Diamond and the Old Ways Podcast are going to the Orient, specifically the Horror on the Orient Express. Mike shared a teaser video with us that will be available by the time this episode is released.  Our friend Bret Kramer at Sentinel Hill Press has released Miskatonic Country Scenarios - A Keeper's Guide. You can get it on DriveThru for $5. It looks like Wizards of the Coast is being sued again this time by Gale Force 9 for failing to approve products already agreed to be released. This is basically the same case as the Dragonlance suit from a few months ago.  Bayt-al-Azif #3 is out! It's got a number of new scenarios, including 1920s, modern and 1960s; an interview with the Great Old One Sandy Petersen himself; as well as an article by friend of the show Dean Engelhardt. At 124 pages for $8 on DTRPG, it's well worth the purchase price. It has articles and scenarios by a whole bunch of new authors, and I think it's a great way to hook up with some fresh new content at a very reasonable price.  MUP Patreon If you haven't heard yet, we have redesigned our Patreon and so far   the feedback has been all positive!
