You may have heard of the critical brain hypothesis. It goes something like this: brain activity operates near a dynamical regime called criticality, poised at the sweet spot between too much order and too much chaos, and this is a good thing because systems at criticality are optimized for computing, they maximize information transfer, they maximize the time range over which they operate, and a handful of other good properties. John Beggs has been studying criticality in brains for over 20 years now. His 2003 paper with Deitmar Plenz is one of of the first if not the first to show networks of neurons operating near criticality, and it gets cited in almost every criticality paper I read. John runs the Beggs Lab at Indiana University Bloomington, and a few years ago he literally wrote the book on criticality, called The Cortex and the Critical Point: Understanding the Power of Emergence, which I highly recommend as an excellent introduction to the topic, and he continues to work on criticality these days. On this episode we discuss what criticality is, why and how brains might strive for it, the past and present of how to measure it and why there isn't a consensus on how to measure it, what it means that criticality appears in so many natural systems outside of brains yet we want to say it's a special property of brains. These days John spends plenty of effort defending the criticality hypothesis from critics, so we discuss that, and much more. Beggs Lab. In this episode, we dive deep into the unsettling and complex case of William Beggs, infamously known as the Limbs in the Loch killer. We explore his seemingly normal life, marked by political involvement and a visit to Downing Street, juxtaposed with a dark pattern of escalating violence. The episode begins with Beggs's childhood in Northern Ireland, where he was raised in a right-wing political environment, contrasting sharply with his education at a Quaker school emphasizing peace and tolerance. We discuss his early confrontations with the Ulster Volunteer Force and his subsequent move to England, where he joined the Federation of Conservative Students but soon displayed violent behaviors targeting men in gay clubs. The murder of Barry Oldham in 1987 marks a significant turning point, leading to Beggs's brief imprisonment and subsequent relocation to Scotland. Here, his violent tendencies escalated, culminating in the horrific 1999 murder of Barry Wallace, whose severed head was found on a beach in Troon, and body parts in Loch Lomond. Despite overwhelming forensic evidence, Beggs maintained his innocence and continued to fight the legal system from prison, even attempting to form a civil partnership with another inmate convicted of sex offenses. This episode provides a thorough examination of Beggs's life, his crimes, and their ongoing impact, highlighting the challenges of the justice system and the enduring pain for victims' families. We reflect on the disturbing realities of human nature and the quest for justice, leaving listeners with thought-provoking questions about Beggs's motivations and actions.00:00 Introduction to the Case00:44 Beggs' Early Life and Political Involvement01:49 Emergence of Violence and First Murder03:41 Legal Battles and Relocation to Scotland06:26 The Limbs in the Loch Murder09:53 Beggs' Life in Prison and Ongoing Legal Battles11:45 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Hosted on Acast. While completing her BFA at Baylor University, Rebekah Danae's fourteen year painting practice was stylistically and thematically influenced by formative experiences in Belgium, studying Rene Magritte's surrealist blend of comedy and peril, and in Texas, learning from Sedrick Huckaby's metaphoric expressions offaith, community, and heritage.Sculpturally— through leatherwork and interior design— Danae's work has been influenced by the cowboy boot making community in Beggs, Oklahoma and the design firm of Christopher Murphy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In practice, Danae draws inspiration from Virgil Abloh, who blurred the lines of art and commerce through the tools of contemporary culture; Rebecca Belmore's ability to elicit intimate moments of reflection while tackling tremendous contemporary issues; the liberatory mysticism of Afrofuturism philosophy; the fiber artists of the wearable art movement in the 70s; and from the community-based relational practice of Rick Lowe.Through her work, Rebekah Danae and A Creative House orchestrate a movement in the middle of the country, made up of a diverse creative choir. Far from a lone ranger, Danae works collaboratively across a curated network of Oklahomans— from the punk underground, homegrown rappers and producers, luxury interior designers, rodeo cowboys, rural bootmakers, to philanthropic, political, and educational leaders. Her approach, while whimsical and surreal, has the intended impact of critical regional culture-shaping from the current white supremacy that is prevalent regionally today and toward a co-created futurist Oklahoma, the liberated West.

But in September of 2019 police would receive a call from a neighbor claiming they believe their neighbor%E2%80%99s house had been broken into after going over to their home and discovering their front door had been kicked in. And when police arrive at the scene they would discover the triple homicide of a family of 3. Renowned Oklahoma City Defense Attorney Charged in Shocking Triple Murder Plot

Keegan Harroz, a highly regarded criminal defense attorney based in Oklahoma City, has been arrested and charged with the premeditated triple murder of Tiffany Eichor, 43, and her parents, Jack, 65, and Evelynn “Kaye” Chandler, 69, on September 7, 2019. Harroz, known for her legal prowess and compassionate nature, is accused of conspiring with her client-turned-lover, Barry Titus II, 42, to carry out the gruesome murders. Authorities allege that the motive behind the killings was to prevent Eichor, a former medical technician who briefly dated Titus after meeting him on Tinder in 2017, from testifying against him at his upcoming trial for allegedly beating and attempting to strangle her in November of that year, and her parents died because they were witnesses. The complex murder plot unfolded as Titus and Harroz allegedly broke into the Chandler family's home in Beggs, Okla., fatally shooting Eichor and her parents. Prosecutors claim that Eichor was targeted to silence her as a witness, while her parents were murdered because they could testify as well. Harroz and Titus have both pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges and burglary in the first degree. If convicted, they could face the death penalty. The shocking revelation has exposed Harroz's darker side, contrasting sharply with her successful legal career. A graduate of Oklahoma City University School of Law, she started her own law firm in 2014 after working as an assistant public defender. Harroz's troubled history includes a domestic assault charge in 2014 for allegedly kicking her then-husband in the face. Her decision-making came under scrutiny as she represented Titus, a former crane operator, in various legal matters, including drug and firearm charges, domestic assault, and a restraining order involving Eichor. Prosecutors claim that Harroz asked a client to plant fake drugs at the Chandler family's house to discredit them, a move that ultimately failed when the package was discovered, leading to the installation of security cameras by Eichor's parents. Prosecutors allege that on Sept. 6, 2019, Harroz and Titus drove to Frisco, Texas, and had dinner with her family before checking in at the Red Roof Inn in Plano.   The couple then allegedly drove three hours back to Oklahoma, where around 3 a.m., authorities claim they cut the electric meter and phone lines at the Chandlers' home and kicked in the front door. Jack was allegedly killed first. Eichor was outside her bedroom and shot repeatedly in the back “as they chased her down [the] hallway,” while Kaye attempted to hide in the closet before she was murdered, according to court documents.

All three were shot with two different types of weapons. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Cannibalism Now? Shock Value and the Value of Bodies

The BreakPoint Podcast

One of the iron laws of popcorn cinema, especially to score the coveted (but ever-more elusive) summer blockbuster status is that there must be sufficient shock value. And one of the iron laws of shock value is that it must always increase. Each new film must outdo the last one.  Take the Jurassic Park series. In the first movie back in 1993, a mere five people were eaten by dinosaurs, all of whom were confined to a tiny island. Fast-forward a few inferior sequels, and a score or more people are gobbled by a host of mutant CGI dinos prowling the entire planet along with giant killer grasshoppers. The lesson is clear: Audiences had already been shocked by dinosaurs coming back to life, and they wanted more. The old thrill would no longer do.   The more this iron law holds across pop culture, the more desensitized we become. Enter another rising entertainment genre more gruesome than dinosaurs eating people. People eating people.   Writing recently in The New York Times, Alex Beggs documented a growing fascination with cannibalism. In the article, Beggs offered a long list of movies, TV shows, and novels in which characters eating one another is a central plot device. The novel A Certain Hunger is “about a restaurant critic with a taste for (male) human flesh.” The Showtime series Yellowjackets is “about a high school women's soccer team stranded in the woods for a few months too many.” A new show on Hulu called Fresh is about “an underground human meat trade.” Raw is a film about “a vegetarian veterinary student whose taste for meat escalates,” and Bones and All is a movie about “a young love that becomes a lust for human consumption.”   “Turns out,” wrote Beggs, “cannibalism has a time and a place,” and “that time is now.”  What on earth is fueling a sudden fixation with perhaps the oldest and most unsettling of taboos? The writer of one show told the Times: “I feel like the unthinkable has become the thinkable, and cannibalism is very much squarely in the category of the unthinkable.” Another seemed to find the concept potentially appetizing, asking, “what portion of our revulsion to these things is a fear of the ecstasy of them?”  When I first saw the headline for this New York Times story appear in my newsfeed, I thought it was a prank. Apparently, all of these books, movies, and TV shows about cannibalism point to a very real partially popular trend. Why?   Perhaps, in a culture that has made virtues of deconstructing all moral boundaries and celebrating all desires, it is increasingly difficult to shock anyone. Shock value, after all, depends on some sense of what is right and wrong, and even more, what is normal. With sexual and gender identities multiplying daily and more and more people treating the human body as moldable clay without any underlying design or purpose, is it any wonder some are reimagining it as food?  And why shouldn't they, if human beings are only, as Christian author Glen Scrivener puts it, “mischievous apes?” Chimpanzees routinely kill and eat one another. If we are only advanced animals, it's difficult to imagine why we humans should have a strong aversion to dining on each other, too. If our bodies are in no way sacred or made for a higher purpose, then not just every sexual appetite, but every appetite must be permissible.  To be clear, I am not suggesting that we are on the cusp of a cannibal rights movement. I certainly hope we are not. The social aversion is extremely strong, as it should be, and has only been broken in a few times and places throughout history. Still, the current flirtations with people-eating in entertainment is a tell-tale sign of a culture that is losing all good aversions.   Like those sub-par Jurassic Park sequels resorting to ever hungrier and bigger dinosaurs, our movies and stories reveal a lost creativity, leaving a culture that must constantly push boundaries. In particular, our gnostic age tends to push the boundaries of how characters think of and use their bodies, and the bodies of others. When it comes to sex, titles like Fifty Shades of Grey and Cuties have already put sadomasochism and the sexual exploitation of children on the menu. In such a culture, a side dish of cannibalism isn't surprising.   Those who find a worldview in which bodies have no purpose or boundaries a bit nauseating should wonder why. Christians can tell them, and offer the alternative: a worldview in which bodies are sacred, not only because they are part of what it means to be created in God's image, but because God, Himself assumed a body and gave it for us. Interestingly, Christianity's early critics alleged that the Lord's Supper was a form of cannibalism. In fact, it was and is the ultimate reason that the human body is worthy of respect and honor, in the bedroom, at the movies, and even at the table.
