It has been three years since composer/pianist/educator Darrell Grant visited the Café at Artichoke Music. He's so busy and prolific it seems like we could have him on once a month. Of course he is still a tenured professor of Jazz Studies and Associate Director of the School of Music at Portland State University, but I also like to think of him in the true New Orleans use of the word “professor,” when it comes to pianists, one of great respect. He released a new album this week called Our Mr. Jackson, honoring not only the Modern Jazz Quartet and Milt Jackson but beloved Portland drummer, the late Carlton Jackson who plays on the album along with Marcus Shelby and Mike Horsfall. The album release concert takes place at Hallowed Halls on Thursday October 12. It's a beautiful album. Let's find out all about it. Listen to Versailles from the album at the end of our conversation.

The Albina Arts center was once a significant cultural hub for Black communities in North and Northeast Portland. But the building had fallen into disrepair and various plans have been proposed to reinvent and revitalize it. Darrell Grant, a musician and professor of Jazz Studies at Portland State University, began holding cultural events at the space last year, and partnered with writer and artist Renee Mitchell to create the Soul Restoration Center this year. The Center is already providing a venue for Black artists, musicians and "a space to just come and hang out, to belong and to heal," according to Mitchell. We talk with Renee Mitchell and Darrell Grant about what the Soul Restoration Center is becoming and their hopes for its future.

The August 2020 single "Take Flight" started with a request from Grant's son's 8th-grade teacher that he write a song that parents could sing to the children during their middle-school class promotion. As he wrote, he thought about the bittersweet nature of launching our children into the world, even as we struggle to let them go. Fast forward to the summer of 2020: coronavirus descended on the world, traditional rites of passage for youth were suspended indefinitely, nationwide protests in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. In this challenging and painful time of re-evaluation and reckoning, Grant was moved by their emotional resilience, by their courage in the face of the pandemic, and by their demands to end racism to offer up this song and the artistic collaborations it inspired.

Warren Black interviews Portland composer and pianist Darrell Grant, about his chamber opera in progress, Sanctuaries. It tells the story of a community experiencing gentrification in Portland’s Albina district. Gentrification in Portland and the city’s redlining past go under the microscope in Darrell Grant’s jazz opera, Sanctuaries, a new work commissioned and produced by Third Angle New Music. This world premiere, site-specific opera is composed by critically acclaimed jazz pianist Darrell Grant (who ‘Gramophone’ has called “a composer of substance”), with libretto by two-time National Poetry Slam Individual Champion Anis Mojgani and stage direction by LA-based opera director Alexander Gedeon. Blending elements of jazz, spoken word, and devised theater, Sanctuaries speaks to the experience of displaced residents of color in Portland's historically black Albina district.

Living A Vocal Life: A Podcast For Singers

January’s guest on the podcast is Holly Pyle, a singer who uses different musical styles and technology to create her own unique vocal sound and compositions. Holly was an opera major at Northern Arizona University when she stumbled upon a jazz choir audition. She fell in love with the genre, eventually completing her studies in jazz and psychology. Since diving into a music career in 2014, she has released two albums and given over 900 performances in a diverse mix of genres — from hip hop to country to jazz. Holly frequently performs as a solo acapella act, using electronic looping to sample and recombine her voice into an ever-changing choir of Hollys. I met Holly when she was visiting Portland to give a concert and music workshop with my friend, pianist Darrell Grant. Their conversation about collaboration, improvisation, and the creative process had me wishing I had a way to take notes. I loved how she talked about her inner life and her relationship to creativity and knew she would be a wonderful guest on the podcast. For full show notes, transcriptions of this episode, and more offerings for singers, you can visit my website HERE.You can find Holly on: Facebook or Instagram. The songs from today’s episode are called: Veil, Zoloft, Human Together, and Outside of You. That Almond is playing it at all is a small miracle: a couple of winters ago, thieves tased him and ran off with the instrument, which is valued at $5 million to $6 million.Paige Powell’s Magnificent Ride Through New York CityWhen Portland native Paige Powell worked at “Interview” magazine in New York City in the 80s, she traveled in rarified circles. There were lunches with Bianca Jagger, dinners with David Bowie, late nights with Madonna, and an endless parade of parties with Andy Warhol. And she documented it all with her camera. When Powell moved back to Oregon, she put all the photos and videos in boxes and didn’t look at them for years. Now she’s showing them for the first time in a multimedia installation at the Portland Art Museum called “The Ride.” She gave producer Aaron Scott a tour.Marc Acito’s Broadway Breakthrough, Starring George TakeiThe life of the “Star Trek” actor-turned-civil rights activist is inspiring a new musical on Broadway. “Allegiance” tells the story of George Takei and his family, who were sent to internment camps by the U.S. government during World War II. The New York “Observer” called “Allegiance” “fresh,” “original,” and “passionate.” And the play’s co-writer happens to be someone who worked in Portland for 20 years before returning to New York and Broadway: Marc Acito. We caught up with Acito between the play’s rehearsals.Liminal Wants To Offend You
Liminal Performance Group has a reputation for brassy, experimental, tech-rich theater productions, so we were intrigued when they announced that they were going to re-vamp a seminal anti-theatre work called “Offending the Audience” for “a modern age of pan-surveillance and fractured media self-reflections.”What happens when you slap a pandemonium of surveillance and interactive technology, plus nude interpretive dances, onto the 50 year-old play by Peter Handke? For our ongoing series “What Are You Looking At,” we invited James Engberg and Eric Kilgore to see the show. You might know them from a theater podcast and XRAY-FM show they hosted called “5 Useless Degrees & A Bottle of Scotch.”“Offending the Audience" runs through Nov. 22 at Action/Adventure Theater.Amazon Goes Old School With Brick And MortarLast week, while we were whooping it up at Wordstock, book lovers in Seattle were treated to the latest high-tech, new-fangled idea in e-commerce, cooked up by Amazon: the opening of a store.
