Pianist/composer Cedar Walton (born January 17, 1934) first rose to prominence with drummer Art Blakey's band and his own groups featured his original compositional voice for decades: fresh original takes on the hard bop style he came up in. Many of his tunes have become jazz standards.
Tonight's Jazz Feature had one of the most widely recorded trumpeters from the 50's and 60's who eventually went into other fields after being a big part of Jazz for so many years. Donald Byrd was one of the many young trumpeters who reflected in their own way the influence of the late Clifford Brown, who died at age 25 in a car crash. Byrd along with Lee Morgan were the young heralds of the trumpet in the 50's and in the 60's Freddie Hubbard was added to that list. Byrd recorded a lot and this is from his period just before he left Jazz for other musical pursuits. This band was one he worked with frequently during the mid-60's. The Jazz Feature album is called "Blackjack" . It spotlights a sextet with Byrd leading alto saxophonist Sonny Red (aka Sylvester Kyner), tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Cedar Walton, Walter Booker on bass and the always smiling Billy Higgins on drums. The tunes are mostly original creations by Sonny Red and Donald Byrd. Byrd wrote the title track "Blackjack", a hip funky tune. Enjoy this fine date from Blue Note Records.

Producing a historical recording requires enormous patience, investigative powers like an investigative journalist. The journey is long, emotional, and exciting when the recordings are discovered, and the final package completed. This is what Zev Feldman does. He is the producer for and co-president of Resonance Records, a record label that releases archival recordings that are previously unissued. The Resonance catalogue includes John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, among many other legendary musicians. In this episode, Zev Feldman and I discuss his insights into his multifaceted career, how he got started in the music industry and his subsequent journey through various roles in sales, marketing, and ultimately producing rare jazz recordings. Feldman works with numerous other labels including Blue Note, Verve Label Group, Elemental Music as well as own his own labels, Jazz Detective and Deep Digs. Feldman spins many stories about his adventures in discovering music long forgotten. It's music that is not just good; it must be GREAT! Curating legacy music requires a sense of understanding about the elements of a dynamic recording, one that exceeds others in the quality of the performance, the importance of a certain date, and the historical aspect of the show or studio recording. Then there is the emotional involvement with the families of these jazz legends, many of whom become close friends, such as it has with the families of jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery (Zev produced the first archival recording of Wes Montgomery for Resonance) and piano virtuoso Bill Evans as Feldman is just releasing his 13th archival recordings of Bill Evans. Then there is the importance of Record Store Day on April 12. Feldman highlights the significance of this little-known observed day in bringing these projects to life. This episode is rich with music, thanks to Zev Feldman and Resonance Records. There is more than 36 minutes of full tracks of music along with clips of recordings discussed. The playlist includes: Freddie Hubbard-On Fire, “True Colors-Breaking Point Closer” (13:32); Freddie Hubbard-trumpet, Bennie Maupin-tenor saxophone, Kenny Barron-piano, Herbie Lewis-bass, Freddie Waits-drums. Charles Mingus-Mingus in Argentina-The Buenos Aires Concerts, “Duke Ellington's Sound of Love” (9:32), Charles Mingus-bass, Ricky Ford tenor saxophone, Jack Walrath-trumpet, Robert Neloms -piano, and Dannie Richmond-drums. Kenny Dorham-Blue Bossa in the Bronx: Live from the Blue Morocco, “Blue Bossa”, (13:31), Kenny Dorham-trumpet, Sonny Red-alto sax, Cedar Walton-piano, Paul Chambers-bass and Denis Charles-drums. Short music clips: Charles Mingus-"Pork Pie Hat", Freddie Hubbard-"Crisis", Kenny Dorham-Blue Friday, Bill Evans-"Ro(u)nd Midnight". Thank you for listening to this podcast. For this bonus episode, the Shakespeare and Company podcast welcomes Jeremy Pelt, renowned jazz trumpeter and author of Griot: Examining the Lives of Jazz Great Storytellers. In conversation with Alex Freiman, Pelt discusses the evolution of jazz, the influence of oral traditions, and the importance of documenting firsthand accounts from legendary musicians. Reflecting on his early days at Berklee, his experiences touring worldwide, and his deep reverence for jazz elders like Roy Haynes and Wayne Shorter, Pelt shares insights into both the triumphs and struggles of jazz musicians. He also addresses the debate over the term “jazz,” the intersection of jazz and hip-hop, and the ongoing challenge of preserving the music's integrity in an industry that often sidelines its true practitioners. Listen in for a compelling exploration of jazz history, culture, and the passion that fuels one of its modern torchbearers.*Jeremy Pelt has become one of the preeminent young trumpeters within the world of jazz. Forging a bond with the Mingus Big Band very early on, as his career progressed, Pelt built upon these relationships and many others which eventually lead to collaborations with some of the genre's greatest masters. These projects include performances and recordings with Cliff Barbaro, Keter Betts, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Ravi Coltrane, Frank Foster, Winard Harper, Jimmy Heath, Vincent Herring, John Hicks, Charli Persip, Ralph Peterson, Lonnie Plaxico, Bobby Short, Cedar Walton, Frank Wess, Nancy Wilson and The Skatalites, to name a few.Pelt frequently performs alongside such notable ensembles as the Roy Hargrove Big Band, The Village Vanguard Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Big Band, and is a member of the Lewis Nash Septet and The Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band featuring Louis Hayes. As a leader, Pelt has recorded ten albums and has toured globally with his various ensembles, appearing at many major jazz festivals and concert venues.Pelt's recordings and performances have earned him critical acclaim, both nationally and internationally. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal by legendary jazz writer and producer, Nat Hentoff, and was voted Rising Star on the trumpet, five years in a row by Downbeat Magazine and the Jazz Journalist Association. Pelt is currently touring throughout the United States and Europe in support of his latest release, "Soundtrack".Alex Freiman is a guitarist, composer, and singer trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Drawing from jazz, blues, soul, and funk, he masterfully blends these influences with energy and virtuosity, creating music that is both groovy and sophisticated. After collaborating with major figures on the French and international scenes, including Stéphane Belmondo, he released his debut album as a leader, Play It Gentle, in 2017. Recorded with Léon Parker (drums), Fred Nardin (organ), and special guest Stéphane Belmondo, this album reflects his passion for improvisation and sonic elegance. Constantly seeking innovation, he launched Alex Freiman & The Hot Sauce, an explosive project where jazz, funk, soul, and hip-hop intertwine. His EP In The Beginning (September 2024) marks the start of a new musical era, followed by the singles We Are One (January 2025), featuring rapper Tiemoko, and This Is The Hot Sauce (March 2025), affirming his vibrant and innovative musical identity. In 2025, Alex Freiman continues his groove exploration with a new album and fresh collaborations. Tonight's Jazz Feature is one of the most intense and incendiary recordings by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. It was done in February 1964. The fire and intensity was perhaps driven by the fact that several of the members of this long standing edition of the Messengers were hinting at leaving to move on to other bands or forming their own groups. The personnel of this band had been together since the end of 1961 and consisted of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone and was also the band's musical director, Cedar Walton on piano, Reginald Workman on bass (the only living member) and of course the master fire stoker Art Blakey on drums. "Free For All" is the apt album title and the album was issued on Blue Note Records and is tonight's Jazz Feature. Listen here!!!

Originally from Harrisburg, PA, Miller was born into a musical family. Growing up she was drawn to the soulful divas of the day- Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner..Her inspiration from the great jazz singers, in particular Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dinah Washington. Philadelphia-based vocalist Maci Miller brings together a host of the city's finest musicians for her stunning new album Nine, the number nine is connected to wisdom and experience. Nine is the singer's second release. The stellar ensemble represents a who's who of the thriving Philly jazz scene- the pair are joined by bassist Mike Boone, tenor sax living legend Larry McKenna, Victor North on soprano sax, and drummers Byron Landham, Leon Jordan Sr., and Josh Orlando, The bassist Mike Boone invited her to join him for several of his weekly livestream concerts; it was there that she met pianist Aaron Graves. Playing into the theme of the album, Graves turns out to be the ninth writing partner that Miller has worked with during her career. The number is rounded out by special guest trumpeter Jeremy Pelt. The tracks on the Nine album, "Complicated," featuring a witty call and response with Larry McKenna, the tense "I Can't-Wait," and the sultry "Love Me For Who I Am" "Strange is the Night" sets an ominous noir tone to address the societal issues confronting the world, with modern-day echoes of Billie Holiday's immortal "Strange Fruit." The album ends with the buoyant "Feel the Music," serving as a mission statement for the deeply felt album. In addition to the original songs, the album includes a rendition of Chick Corea's inspirational "High Wire,""The Nearness of You," and Miller's new lyric for Cedar Walton's "Firm Roots," the title song of the pianist's 1976 album. We had the great fortune of meeting saxophonist Keith Loftis when he was playing with The Baylor Project this spring at Earl Klugh's 20th Weekend of Jazz at The Broadmoor. We knew then that we wanted to continue our backstage conversation in a formal ATJ episode. Over the course of his musically wide-ranging career, Keith's performed with the likes of Benny Carter, Cedar Walton, Nancy Wilson, Frank Foster, Alvin Batiste, Clark Terry, Bobby Shew, Joe Williams and Ray Charles; he's traveled extensively around the globe performing regularly throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and parts of the Middle East with legendary South African Jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim; master drummer Michael Carvin; the Roy Hargrove Big Band and the Frank Foster Loud Minority Big Band. As we found out when we met him, he's also a main fixture in the 6x Grammy nominated The Baylor Project featuring other great friends of ours, Jean & Marcus Baylor. And if that weren't enough, Keith's also a touring member of 4x Grammy award winning bassist Christian McBride's A Christian McBride Situation and The Christian McBride Big Band. We talk with Keith not only about his eclectic and fascinating background, but about one of our personal favorite albums, his 2021 release ‘Original State'.

Michael Mwenso was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone but spent his teenage years hanging out at the legendary jazz club Ronnie Scott's in London where he was exposed to musicians such as Betty Carter, Elvin Jones, Ray Brown and Cedar Walton. In his youth, Mwenso started honing his talents as a trombonist, singer and performer playing in swing bands, reggae and Afrobeat horn sections. Mwenso's talent as a performer caught the attention of many, which subsequently led him to meet James Brown who allotted space for him to sing and dance at his London shows. In 2012, friend and jazz musician Wynton Marsalis brought Mwenso to New York City to serve as curator and programming associate at Jazz at Lincoln Center where he also booked nightly sets at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. Over the next few years, Mwenso also booked throughout the institution at large. Through these performances at Dizzy's, Mwenso began to collaborate with a wide variety of Juilliard trained musicians that soon became known as The Shakes. This unique group of global artists presents music that merges entertainment and artistry through African and Afro-American music. In addition, Mwenso continues to break new ground as a cultural ambassador and artist in residence at various universities. Driven by Mwenso's deep ancestral understanding of the African-American music tradition, his role at these Universities is to not only teach numerous classes on Black music but grow the arts scene within their local community while creating more programming focusing on Black artists. Through this work, Mwenso has partnered with Penn State University, Georgia Tech, Miami University, University at Buffalo and Sonoma State University as a guest professor and cultural ambassador of Black music. Michael is a sought-after cultural curator as well as a master at distributing the spiritual nutrition inherent in Black music with Electric Root, the mission-driven company he co-leads with Jono Gasparro.
