WUCF's March artist for ‘In the Key of Latin Jazz' is Renee Rosnes. Pianist and composer from Canada who has had an astonishing four decade career. With a resume that includes Wayne Shorter band, Ron Carter Foursight Quartet, Blue Note Records' Out of the Blue and Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra...she's a force to be reckoned with. Her ability to hear every single note is what Bill Charlap calls ‘perfect hearing'. Her newest record “Crossing Paths” proves how extraordinary she can be not only as a composer but as an arranger.

Terry Gibbs 99 2. Lionel Hampton 1908-2002 3. John Lewis 1920-2001 4. Bobby Hutcherson 1941-2016 5. Cal Tjader 1925-1982 6. Chick Corea 1941-2021 7. Roy Ayers 83 8. Dave Samuels 1948-2019 9. Tonight's Jazz Feature spotlights the late and deeply missed vibraphonist/marimbaist Bobby Hutcherson. This group was led by Hutcherson after the breakup of the ground breaking Bobby Hutcherson/ Harold Land Quintet. Bobby continued his innovative ways and formed this band of mainly San Francisco based players. Their sound was more airy and floating and lighter but no less compelling. Bobby brought in some of the positive aspects of "fusion Jazz" that prevailed in the early 70's but kept the tradition of Jazz happening. He also divided his time between the vibraphone (it has metal bars) and the marimba (it has wooden bars). which delivered an interesting contrast. Tenor and soprano saxophonist Manny Boyd added to the great sound of this band. George Cables is on electric and acoustic piano, James Leary 111 is on bass and contributes the bulk of the compositions here,. On drums is the great Eddie Marshall and Kenneth Nash on percussion. This fine album delivers a variety of great moods. The album was recorded in San Francisco in February of 1976. It was issued on Blue Note Records and called "Waiting". It was definitely worth waiting for....so enjoy it tonight;.

Kenny Garrett has been playing for more than 40 years. Originally from Detroit, he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the late 70s, when it was being run by Ellington's son Mercer. He also played with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and with Donald Byrd, Woody Shaw, and Freddie Hubbard. He was a member of a young lions group put together by Blue Note Records in the 80s called Out Of The Blue that also included the late drummer Ralph Peterson, and he was already recording as a leader when he was invited to join Miles Davis's band in 1987. He played on the album Amandla, and was part of the Davis band all the way until the end of Miles's life in 1991. Miles Davis even made a very rare guest appearance on one of Garrett's albums, Prisoner Of Love, from 1989.Kenny Garrett's discography as a leader has taken him in a lot of really interesting directions. His 1995 album Triology, with Brian Blade on drums and either Charnett Moffett or Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass, is a really intense, high-energy record that kind of marries bebop language to post-Ornette Coleman freedom, but the real key to the whole thing is the way he executes these really complex melodies on tunes like John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Wynton Marsalis's "Delfeayo's Dilemma," and Mulgrew Miller's "Pressing The Issue." It's a tremendous showcase for his technical command of the saxophone. But the album that first got me interested in his work was Beyond The Wall, a 2006 release that was a collaboration with Pharoah Sanders that also featured Mulgrew Miller on piano, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Robert Hurst on bass, Brian Blade on drums, and on some tracks there were strings and harp and Chinese instruments and a six-member vocal ensemble. It's not spiritual jazz in the way that term is used now, and it's not world music, it's entirely its own thing, and it's particularly fascinating because you might not think of Kenny Garrett and Pharoah Sanders having that much in common, artistically speaking, but they really did. They also recorded a live album together that came out in 2008. Garrett talks about Pharoah a lot in the interview you're about to hear. And Kenny Garrett's latest album is going to surprise a lot of people. It's called Who Killed AI, and it's a collaboration with Svoy, an electronic music producer. Garrett plays alto and soprano sax on it, and all the rest of the music is made with synths and programmed drums. Even the horns are multi-tracked and fed through effects at times. It's structured as kind of a suite — the first track is called “Ascendence,” and there are also pieces called “Transcendence,” “Divergence” and “Convergence.” But there's also a really beautiful version of “My Funny Valentine,” which lays the ballad melody over these kind of shimmering keyboard sounds and a hard drum 'n' bass beat. It's not at all what I was expecting when I was told that there was a new Kenny Garrett album on the way.I'm really glad I had the chance to talk to Kenny Garrett. We discussed his history with Miles Davis and with Woody Shaw, his early musical upbringing, his work with Pharoah Sanders, his approach to synthesizing genres and musics from around the world, and much more. I think you're going to enjoy this conversation.

Automatic Man Legend Releases New Album "From The Vault :Notes For The Future"#automaticman #toddcochran #pianist #composer #keyboardist #electronicmusic #classicalmusic #jazz Notes for the future are the “imagined sometime in the past” tropes of a storyteller. Freed from every day “isms” of convention and released from the symbolic containment of the vault, the music is an allegorical exploration in futurism. The stream running throughout the musical narrative is a speculative commentary about our human search for meaning, and we're reminded that as a version of our ancestors' vision, this quest never ends.“From The Vault” is structured around a sequence of recurring themes and develops as an unfolding tour of references, hints, and clues. Moving from one perspective to another, we connect with how our planet is perpetually in a state of seeking solutions. Within the soundscape, without words, an underlying language is speaking. Nature evolves for the sum of us, not the few. We are in a continual state of becoming. We are connected. Love is passed along, as is happiness. Nevertheless, expressly for the listener, an implied sense of reasoning encourages us to feel free and let go of all things familiar. And then, “over there” in the distance, we get a passing glimpse of the sacred structure.Todd Cochran is an American pianist, composer, keyboardist, electronic musician, and conceptual artist. Early in his career he was also professionally known as Bayeté. Cochran started his career as a teenager with saxophonist John Handy. Two years later he joined vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's Quartet, and made his jazz recording debut composing and performing on a benchmark album for Hutcherson, “Head On” (Blue Note Records). Cochran's first solo project “Worlds Around the Sun” became a #1 jazz album. From the mid-1970s forward Todd has experimented with and incorporated synthesizers, electronic and mixed-media concepts in his creative projects while collaborating with a wide range of artists in the genres of jazz, art rock, pop, R&B, and twenty-first-century classical. To pre-order: Bandcamp: https://bluebuddha.bandcamp.com/Website: https://toddcochran.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/toddcochran_musart/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/toddcochranmusicTwitter: https://twitter.com/CochranMusartYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0pJUL4z18tA02LdgQkQa_wThanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteFor all our social media and other links, go to: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastPlease subscribe, like, and share!

2022 was a banner year for drummer Brian Blade. Nine recordings were released with Brian as a leader, co-leader, or side-player that year. As the year was coming to a close, I began to compile my list of “Best Jazz of 2022”. It was then that I realized that Brian had been a very busy man during the last few years. My curiosity was spiked about this. I wanted to talk to Brian about this prolific output of music but, you see, I had already interviewed him in 2022, twice. But, hey, I wanted to find out more about his incredible list of recordings. We begin exploring the nine releases with the Life Cycles recording that paid tribute to Bobby Hutcherson. It was recorded by this little-known sextet that mostly played in underground night clubs in Manhattan in 2001 with some appearances at festivals around the country. This latest album by Life Cycles was recorded in 2018 by a reassembled group with a couple of additions to the original band. So, on this eighth episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds, Brian Blade and I have our third conversation in a year. The initial focus of this podcast was to be Brian's latest released recording by a band he co-led in 2001, Life Cycles. The recording was saluting NEA Jazz Master, vibe and marimba artist Bobby Hutcherson with Life Cycles 1&2: Now & Forever: Honoring Bobby Hutcherson. But a few months had passed since this conversation took place and Brian just released another recording, Mama Rosa. Brian Blade has had a life well lived and he's only 52 and still rolling! He's a multi-Grammy-award winning drummer, group leader, record label founder and owner. He's recorded and performed with a list of artists too long to list here, but I shall list some very notable ones: Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Christian McBride, Joshua Redman, John Patitucci, Brad Mehldau, Danilo Perez, Joni Mitchell, and Emmylou Harris. What is wonderful about this conversation, different from the last two, is learning more about Brian as a person as well as a musician, an artist. And learning about what's behind some of the recordings and bands he's created with people like the late maestros Wayne Shorter and Bobby Hutcherson, as well as the great drummer Joe Chambers, and his relationship with singer songwriter and pianist Norah Jones. Spoiler alert-Brian Blade plays guitar. And he played it with Norah Jones who was not playing piano. She was on drums. _________________________________________________________________The music you hear on this podcast is from the Life Cycles album: “Now “ by Bobby Hutcherson and Gene McDaniels and “Forgotten Memories” by Myron Walden. The Life Cycles personnel include: Brian Blade, drums; Jon Cowherd, piano; Myron Walden, saxophone; Doug Weiss, bass; John Hart, guitar; Monte Croft, vibes/vocals; and, Rogerio Boccato-percussion. BTW, you'll hear a dog on this episode, as well. I invite you to subscribe so you are alerted to future episodes and articles written by me as well as events and information I want to pass on to you. I am looking for sponsors so please consider it and email me at strictlyjazzsounds.com. I'm interested in your feedback. I always need to improve what I'm doing. And, finally, support live jazz wherever you are. Thanks for listening.
