In this episode, I sat down with Michael Weiss — investigative journalist, bestselling author of ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror, and one of the sharpest minds covering the war in Ukraine — to break down what's really happening on the ground. And let me tell you: it's not the story you're getting on cable news.We covered a ton of ground in this conversation, including:✅ How 70% of Russian battlefield deaths now come from Ukrainian drones — many of them built from commercial parts.✅ Why Russia has literally resorted to using horse-drawn carts to move supplies while Ukraine operates like a high-tech startup.✅ The myth that America is “bankrolling” the war — and why most U.S. aid never even leaves America.✅ What happens if Trump wins and pulls the plug on Ukraine — and why it might accidentally force Europe to rearm.✅ Why Ukraine has been a rock-solid U.S. ally for decades — and how we're repaying them with conspiracy theories and abandonment.✅ What the endgame in Ukraine actually looks like — and why it still matters to the U.S.Michael Weiss has spent years reporting from conflict zones in Syria, Ukraine, and beyond — and he's now working on a book about Russia's GRU military intelligence agency. His insights are sharp, unflinching, and absolutely necessary right now.If you want a clear-eyed look at what's really happening in Ukraine — and why America's retreat is a massive strategic mistake — this is the conversation you need to hear.

Bashar al-Assad has fled to Russia. Rebel leaders have taken over Damascus. And hundreds of thousands of refugees from the country’s long civil war are making their way back home. And while many in Syria and around the world are rejoicing at the downfall of Assad and his brutal regime, there are growing concerns that the country could go the way of Libya, Yemen, and Iraq, where insurgent groups and sectarian strife have wreaked havoc on the civilian population and created failed states, which in the case of Syria, could threaten to further destabilize an already volatile Middle East. And beyond Syria, how does Assad’s regime collapse affect broader conflicts and regional powers like Iran, Israel, Russia, the U.S. and Turkey? To make sense of this moment, and the seismic changes taking place, we are joined by Michael Weiss. Michael is an investigative journalist who focuses on international affairs, specifically the wars in Syria and Ukraine. His understanding of this region and its players gives him a unique insight into this rapidly evolving situation.

I have known Michael Weiss for quite some time through his day job with UCF Incubator as a manager over two incubator sites.  What I didn't know is that he is an entrepreneur, graduated with hospitality as his field of study, and that he has quite a bit of knowledge and experience in the sports industry.  When I asked him what his five words are that defined him, he shared that he likes to have fun. One of the short stories he shared was about a new minor league basketball team that he had a job with. He had the opportunity to come up with slogans and his idea was selected. The team was the Pitbulls, and the slogan that was a “slam dunk” (pun intended) was "Meet the Pitbulls unleashed".   Michael is interesting because he works every day with startup founders and is a wealth of knowledge and demonstrates his desire to help others achieve greatness.  His startup is Room Rite and he decided to launch when he identified a problem when planning a family reunion. He noticed there were very few hotels that offered affordable room rates. The hotels were overpriced and had little inventory.  Michael wondered how often hotels have rooms that are not picked up during conferences.  Taking you to the end of this first chapter of his startup journey. He won 4th place at the Rollins College Venture Competition and received an equity free $5,000 prize.  Please tune in to hear his interview and learn more about what he thinks the hospitality industry will look like in 2030.   We hope you enjoy this week's episode of The Intern Whisperer. Promoting Equity in Developmental Education Reform: A Conversation with Nikki Edgecombe and Michael Weiss

Evidence First

Developmental education, also known as remedial education, refers to courses that some entering college students will have to take if they are deemed unprepared for college-level courses. However, studies have shown that developmental education can actually hinder students' progress in college. Additionally, students of color, adults, first-generation students, and those from low-income backgrounds are disproportionately placed in developmental education programs, so there's a lot of interest among policymakers, college practitioners, and researchers in reforming developmental education programs to address these challenges and support more equitable outcomes for students. As part of MDRC's 50th anniversary celebration, this episode of Evidence First features MDRC's longtime partner the Community College Research Center, or CCRC. In 2014, MDRC and CCRC launched the Center for the Analysis of Postsecondary Readiness, or CAPR, to research the effectiveness of developmental education reforms and to understand their implications for equity. In this episode, Leigh Parise talks with Nikki Edgecombe, a senior research scholar at CCRC who leads CAPR, and Michael Weiss, a senior fellow in postsecondary education at MDRC, about what has been learned about promoting equity in developmental education reform.

Episode 30 of After the Breach brings to the table a conversation we often have off the air. Joining us are Michael Weiss from the Center for Whale Research and Monika Wieland Shields from Orca Behavior Institute. Throughout our discussion we try to “demystify” killer whales. Being around these amazing animals sometimes has us seeing them through a human centric filter. It's often easy to see ourselves in them and we think this is one of the many reasons people love them. But we also feel like it's important to recognize that they are amazing creatures because they are social, intelligent individuals and they are not human. As we spend more and more time around them the more questions we have. But there are a few persistent themes the four of us have heard about killer whales and we take this episode to address some of them. These may (or may not) be unpopular opinions but we hope they open some new conversations as we navigate this world as humans alongside other intelligent creatures. What we feel and do and think is probably not what they feel and do and think, even if we'd like to believe we're like them or they're like us. We don't mean to diminish how impressive they are, but rather recenter that admiration and amazement outside of our human lens. If you are enjoying listening to our podcast, please share this with your friends, follow/subscribe, and leave us feedback/reviews wherever you listen to podcasts! Darth and I welcome Michael Weiss, an investigative journalist renowned for his extensive coverage of the wars in Syria and Ukraine, as well as his publications on Russian espionage and disinformation. Amid a fair amount of jokes and sarcasm, we delve into discussions about the GRU and how its spy culture contrasts with that of the SVR, Russia's foreign intelligence service. We look at some of the GRU's “successful” operations, as Michael is currently writing a book about this infamous institution. Interestingly, some of the most talented individuals who served in the GRU during its inception in the 1920s-1930s, were foreigners rather than Russians. My favorite takeaways: How the appeasement of Russia failed: attempts by the Obama and early Biden's administrations to restart relations and "tickle Putin's tummy" were fruitless. Michael nearly developed a PTSD from dealing with the divided Syrian opposition, which had a hard time uniting against the common enemy. I can relate to this, since there are similar conflicts among the Belarusian democratic groups in exile. Do you remember the footage of Russian soldiers shipping the looted fridges and other stuff from Ukraine via Belarus post offices? The footage of that circus was actually leaked to the public by the Belarusian state services, so there is a bit of the Fifth column in the Belarusian power vertical.     Yours truly, Katie from Minsk

Mike and Ben share the need to stay vertically integrated, the ways to cut through the fog, and how to make your hotels feel like a part of the natural landscape. Takeaways: The hospitality business is the memory making business. Every experience should be focused on authentically creating memories that guests will take with them for the rest of their lives. Hospitality is about making people feel effortlessly taken care of. Through an understanding of who the guest is, you can prepare for their needs, ensuring a feeling of magic when the guest arrives. When your backdrop is the Rockies or Arches National Parks, your hotels should feel like a part of the landscape. Working with local design firms to imbue the aesthetic of the area into the hotel creates a unique experience for your guests tied to that location. Designing thoughtfully and beautifully revolves around meeting the needs and wants of a guest. While this may not be the strictly most profitable strategy, having rounded amenities creates guests that want to come back. Fog in business is unavoidable. Rather than getting lost, you need to provide clarity. Assess the problem, have the right tools and processes in place, and work towards a concrete solution, even if it takes time. When managing a hotel, instilling trust is the most important thing you can do. Your guests need to trust that you will deliver on what you promised and your team needs to trust that you will maintain your vision. Vertical integration in this market is essential to operation. By owning all operations, it allows you to align the guest experience with what you promise, and it holds you accountable by removing any potential blame of 3rd parties. Quote of the Show:“When we think about design, it's not just the physical design of the space, it's the design of the entire experience.” - Mike“Self awareness and humility is critical to winning in hospitality.” - BenLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikedweiss/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-weinberg-29644156/  Company website: https://www.staytrailborn.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/staytrailborn/  Shout Outs:7:34 - Goldman Sachs: https://www.goldmansachs.com/ 9:06 - Estes Park: https://www.visitestespark.com/ 9:09 - Rocky Mountain National Park: https://www.nps.gov/romo/index.htm 12:48 - Theodore Roosevelt13:48 - Ken Burns: https://kenburns.com/ 20:07 - Colorado Cherry Company: https://www.coloradocherrycompany.com/ 20:13 - Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/ 33:23 - Warren Buffett44:13 - Deutsche Bank: https://www.db.com/ 44:37 - ALIS: https://www.burba.com/ALIS Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

Last November, orcas sank a yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar. This wasn't anything new; these marine mammals have sunk vessels several times over the past few years. The question is why. Orcas have highly complex social structures and there's a lot we don't understand about their behavior. Can studying their interactions with boats give us some insight? Michael Weiss, research director at the Center for Whale Research, joins The Excerpt to discuss these highly intelligent and social marine mammals.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
