David Backes grew up playing hockey, soccer and baseball in Spring Lake Park. He ended up playing 15 seasons in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins and Anaheim Ducks. Now, the 38-year-old has ventured into the restaurant business in retirement. Scott has paid his dues. He used to work for Mike Gillis as a consultant with the Canucks. It was Scott that convinced Gillis to put an offer sheet on David Backes. He has worked very hard at the craft. Was a very good hockey player. John says he would be a great choice. Very quiet and discrete guy who would do a very good job for the Canucks. Talked about Sean Burke. He has worked hard at the craft of being in the business. Worked hard in MTL as a consultant and goalie coach. Was on the short list in EDM that Holland got. Solid person in the game. Talked about why Mellanby quite MTL. Talked about the past legal troubles in the past. John says that he is more of a complete person now than when the assault occured. Thinks that Mellanby can do the job without the tutelage of Rutherford. Talked about the plans outside of Allvin. There needs to someone who can be a capologist. Talked about the schedule moving forward. Says that fifty percent capactiy is better than zero. Thinks we will hear about the Olympic team a week from Monday, likely the 24th of January. Talked about Eric Staal. He isn’t on the list right now but the key word is “yet”. Likes the American team. Not sure about their goaltending but they can skate and shoot the puck. David Backes recently retired after a stellar 15-year career in the National Hockey League where he became one of the fiercest competitors and most dependable teammates in the league. He spent 10 of those seasons, with the St. Louis Blues, where he was named to three All-Star teams and served as captain. Backes spent the final years of his NHL career with the Boston Bruins and Anaheim Ducks before announcing his retirement on September 9, 2021. Backes was also a two-time Olympian, helping the U.S. to win a silver medal in 2010. He joins the Get in the Game Podcast to reflect on his career, share his and his wife's heart for service — particularly as it relates to animal activism, share how his faith impacted his career, and what he hopes his legacy will be. Kelly Backes is the wife of Anaheim Ducks star David Backes. She's actively involved in a number of ministries with wives of athletes. She also fosters pets, and she and David founded Athletes for Animals — a non-profit that connects athletes with a shared passion for animals, educated the public about responsible pet ownership, promoted pet adoption, raised funds and distributed grants to support best practices in animal welfare. They have years of experience as board members at Five Acres Animal Shelter, a no-kill organization in the St. Louis area. She served as interim Executive Director and was also the Vice President of the Board. She is also passionate about the Starkey Hearing Foundation because of her own hearing impairment story.
