From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above.  Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here. Rustic gallery glamFood writer Amy Thielen of Park Rapids recommends a gallery space in Detroit Lakes with a show that opens Thursday for the peak summer season. The gallery, run by ceramicist Ellen Moses, is called Art Project 605. Visitors can see the abstract landscape paintings and drawings of Jennie Ward of Lake Park. Entitled “Love Song in the Chaos,” the show will be up through Aug. 2.  Thielen offers this background: Ellen moved back from New York City during the COVID time. I feel like we gained in the North Country — we gained a lot of very cool people who moved back up north, where they are now working remotely. She and her wife Lori O'Dea bought a storefront. In the back, it's Ellen's studio: She makes plates, cups and 3D sculptures. In the front space of the storefront there's a gallery, and [Thursday night] a show opens by Jennie Ward, an artist who lives a little bit further west in Lake Park.Jennie's paintings are really interesting. They're very beautiful. They're abstract expressionist landscapes. The colors are big, swaths of thick paint; she's a great colorist. I'm very excited for this work. I think everybody in town will love it.  It's a beautifully renovated storefront: a beautiful, clean, minimalist working space. It reminds me of a corner in a bigger city, like New York or Chicago.— Amy ThielenGlobal grooves galaPadma Wudali is an amateur musician who plays the veena, a South Indian classical carnatic instrument. She loves the band Maithree, whose work combines Indian and Western classical music styles and instruments.Maithree will be performing this Saturday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hindu Society of Minnesota's campus in Maple Grove. The concert is a fundraiser for a new Cultural, Arts and Heritage Center.Padma says: Maithree is a band of Minnesotans who collaborate with classical music, both Western and Indian. So it to me it's not about them diluting any of their art forms, but rather stepping into each other spaces to create amazing music. The music that we will get to hear is Indian, classical Irish, Turkish melodies all seamlessly blended together and various compositions.Shruthi Rajesekar is the youngest member, and I'm super excited to see her work be represented by this group. She is a Western classical music composer who very much grew up in Plymouth and how her work is just being admired by so many people in the United States and abroad.— Padma WudaliBand blitz bashAmanda H. Malkin runs the PaperLoves Conservation in St. Peter, where she's involved in the local arts scene. She's looking forward to the 2024 Minnesota Original Music Festival, which starts next Wednesday, July 17 and culminates in two days of live, local music on July 20 and 21 at MN Square Park in St. Peter. Amanda describes the events leading up to next weekend: There are workshops and jam sessions. There's also this really awesome event called the 48-Hour Band Challenge. They basically invite musicians who are interested to put their names in a hat. New bands are formed by picking names out of the hat, and then those new bands have 48 hours to write a song together and then perform it. It's a way for musicians to find each other, workshop together, learn, practice, vibe!— Amanda H. Malkin

In an emotional discussion, Rudolph opens up about how hard it's been on him from losing his father to gun violence to struggling through injuries in his football career to death of his nephew to the life altering incident in April 2021, where he took another man's life while injuring others in an attempt of self defense being attacked at his own home.   The shooting on April 7, 2021, came after an altercation between Rudolph and his then-girlfriend Dominique Jones. Not long after, Rudolph was confronted at his house by four men. It ended with Rudolph firing 39 shots in the direction of their SUV, leaving one deceased and three others injured. Rudolph claimed that he killed a man and almost killed three others in order to save his own life. After a two-week trial, It took Jurors four hours to find Travis Rudolph not guilty of first-degree murder and cleared of three counts of attempted murder from the fatal shooting outside his home in Lake Park, Florida.  Taking Fred, Ryan and Channing through the series of events that led up to the shooting, Rudolph emotionally explains how his then girlfriend was upset over some text messages she read in his phone and contacted her brother and his friends to go shoot up his shit which led to them arriving at his home, first beating him up then drawing guns. After being arrested and facing charges, Rudolph spent time in prison awaiting his trial and a year on house arrest during a time where he went through a lot of loss and reflection. He explains how he's been grief stricken from the loss of his father who was shot and killed while he was working and his young nephew who passed away in a car accident while trying to stay strong in his mindset fighting for his life since April 2021.  The former New York Giants and Florida State wide receiver, filled with tears, tried to put into words what the past few years has been like and the toll it's taken on him, his family especially his mother who was there the night of the shooting which prompted him to go into survival mode.   Rudolph, who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of college and spent the 2017 season with the Giants, but his career was stalled from injury before signing with a CFL team before 2020. Now that he is acquitted of all charges, Rudolph is looking to get his life back on track and try to get back into football and fulfill his aspirations of playing professional football, a path he started down years ago as a young high school star.  Learn more about your ad choices. Today's guest is Bethany Owens of Salmon Lake Park, a 115 acre hidden gem in the heart of East Texas, with a 2 acre sand bottom, spring-fed swimming lake surrounded by cabins, campgrounds, playgrounds, meeting halls and a old west town. Salmon Lake park is not only a unique camping destination, but also a prime space for events of all sorts! The park property was originally the homestead of Floyd and Fannie Salmon.  They owned a house moving business and ran cattle on the property.  In order to create a watering hole for the cattle, Floyd dammed the spring-fed creek that ran through the property and created “Salmon Lake”.  The Lake was a popular place for his daughter's friends to come out and swim.  Eventually, he opened the lake to the public for swimming.    In the mid 70's, as a bluegrass aficionado, and at the suggestion of his friend Earl Garner, Floyd installed a stage and RV/camping spaces throughout the property kicking off the annual Bluegrass festival.  Capitalizing on the success and popularity of the Bluegrass Festival, Floyd later added a second Gospel Bluegrass Festival. The majority of the Park's early years were employed solely during the summer for the two festivals and local swimming hole.  Floyd and Fannie managed the Park well into their 80's.  Floyd maintained his visionary approach toward the park, always working on the next unique feature.  After Floyd's passing, Fannie was moved to a nursing home and the park was sold by his daughters to the Powers Family in 2018.    Upon taking the park over, the Powers family made numerous capital improvements in the park including the addition of The Slide and the beautiful new bathhouse.  Their diligence and tireless efforts in maintaining and improving the property put the Park on a positive trajectory.  After many prayers and discussions with family, they made the decision in 2020 to explore the prospect of selling the property to another family who would continue their efforts and maintain the family friendly atmosphere the park espoused since its inception.  On May 1, 2020, the Owens family came to the park to “get away” from the cabin fever they were experiencing due to the Covid lock-downs that had been imposed the previous 6 weeks.  They fell in love with the park and what started as a weekend getaway turned into full time RVing through the summer.  During the course of that time, they got to know the Powers and began to discuss buying the park.  On November of 2020, the Owens family officially carried on the torch Mr. Salmon lit many years ago.  As the current owners, the Owens have many plans to continue the infrastructure upgrades along with adding new camping features and festivals.  Trent and Bethany Owens met after graduating from Texas A&M in the early 2000's.  As they both spent many family vacations at campgrounds growing up, they found they had a mutual love of the outdoors and have since spent many days hiking, camping and enjoying the beautiful world the Lord created.  Primitive camping is one of their favorite past-times and camping in hammocks is their primary gear choice.  Due to their upbringing, they decided they too would raise their children to love and appreciate the camping lifestyle as much as they do.  With the ability to incorporate their favorite past-time into their daily life, the move to Salmon Lake was an easy transition.  They find some of the best family memories are made exploring God's creation.  For more Salmon Lake Park, to book a visit or if you are looking for an incredible event space, check out the links below! Jason Tyrone took a circuitous journey before establishing a highly successful vegetable farm in Lake Park, Georgia. After graduating from Mississippi State University, he returned to his home state of Arkansas to work. After additional steps, he established Tycor Farms in 2010 with his now brother-in law.Tycor Farms grows peppers, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, cabbage, and green beans. Their location offers many positives. Crops are grown in sandy soil, which drains well. The climate allows for spring and fall harvests, and the farm is near major interstate highways which help with distribution.Tyrone said maintaining consistently high-quality produce is vital, as it helps the vegetables hold up well during their journey to market. It also helps keep customers coming back for more.“I started with Redox not long after I started farming, first with their calcium product,” he said. “That's a big thing in bell peppers.  We saw a lot of improvements looking at numbers on paper and quality itself, so it's been part of program for probably 15 years.”The H-2A guestworker program is a key part of the farm's workforce. At its peak, Tycor employs some 275 farm workers.“We would literally be nothing without them,” Tyrone said. “I've been here, in total, for almost 20 years. Some of the same people have been coming here for as long as I've been here. We have a lot of return workers, especially our main guys. They love coming here. They take time away from their family to come here for two or three months at a time. They want to make all of the money they can. They take a lot of pride in their work at this farm, which means everything to us.”Food safety is a top priority at the farm, with a full-time employee devoted to this area. As Tyrone explained, “If everybody is doing their part to make sure we're sending off a good, healthy product, we're all better off.”At the end of a long workday, Tyrone said he remains fascinated with the growing process.“That's what keeps me doing this,” he said. “That's my favorite thing, is to watch the crop grow and how good it looks there at the end before we start tearing it up picking it.”
