Full Text of Readings Thursday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 356 The Saint of the day is Blessed Angelina of Marsciano Blessed Angelina of Marsciano's Story Blessed Angelina of Marsciano founded the first community of Franciscan women other than Poor Clares to receive papal approval. Angelina of Marsciano was born to the Duke of Marsciano near Orvieto. She was 12 when her mother died. Three years later, the young woman made a vow of perpetual chastity. That same year, however, she yielded to her father's decision that she marry the Duke of Civitella. Her husband agreed to respect her previous vow. When he died two years later, Angelina of Marsciano joined the Secular Franciscans and with several other women dedicated herself to caring for the sick, the poor, widows and orphans. When many other young women were attracted to Angelina's community, some people accused her of condemning the married vocation. Legend has it that when she came before the King of Naples to answer these charges, she had burning coals hidden in the folds of her cloak. When she proclaimed her innocence and showed the king that these coals had not harmed her, he dropped the case. Angelina of Marsciano and her companions later went to Foligno, where her community of Third Order sisters received papal approval in 1397. She soon established 15 similar communities of women in other Italian cities. Angelina of Marsciano died on July 14, 1435, and was beatified in 1825. Her liturgical feast is celebrated on July 13. Reflection Priests, sisters and brothers cannot be signs of God's love for the human family if they belittle the vocation of marriage. Angelina respected marriage, but felt called to another way of living out the gospel. Her choice was life-giving in its own way.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
Fr Peter George Flynn marks Trinity Sunday with a look at two figures from Franciscan history: Roger Bacon a medieval scientist accused of witchcraft and Angela of Foligno the ‘teacher of theologians' who prayed for her entire family to die. This year marks the 800th anniversary of the death one of the most popular and well-known Saints – St Francis of Assisi. Francis inspired the life and work of Clare of Assisi and Angela of Foligno. Whilst Clare and Angela may not be as well-known as Francis, their theology gives us a glimpse into the intriguing world of mysticism and highlights the remarkable contribution of women theologians in the medieval period which has, all too often, been overlooked. Michael Hahn introduces the theology of Francis of Assisi, and unveils the thought of Clare of Assisi and Angela of Foligno. Dr Michael Hahn holds the Dom Gregory Dix Chair in Christian Spirituality at Sarum College in Salisbury. His research is on the early Franciscan mystical traditions and he is Senior Editor of the journal Franciscan Studies.

The Saint of the day is Saint Angela of Foligno Saint Angela of Foligno's Story Some saints show marks of holiness very early. Not Saint Angela of Foligno! Born of a leading family in Foligno, Italy, she became immersed in the quest for wealth and social position. As a wife and mother, she continued this life of distraction. Around the age of 40, she recognized the emptiness of her life and sought God's help in the Sacrament of Penance. Her Franciscan confessor helped Angela to seek God's pardon for her previous life and to dedicate herself to prayer and the works of charity. Shortly after her conversion, her husband and children died. Selling most of her possessions, she entered the Secular Franciscan Order. She was alternately absorbed by meditating on the crucified Christ and by serving the poor of Foligno as a nurse and beggar for their needs. Other women joined her in a religious community. At her confessor's advice, Angela wrote her Book of Visions and Instructions. In it she recalls some of the temptations she suffered after her conversion; she also expresses her thanks to God for the Incarnation of Jesus. This book and her life earned for Angela the title “Teacher of Theologians.” She was beatified in 1693, and canonized in 2013. Reflection People who live in the United States today can understand Saint Angela's temptation to increase her sense of self-worth by accumulating money, fame or power. Striving to possess more and more, she became more and more self-centered. When she realized she was priceless because she was created and loved by God, she became very penitential and very charitable to the poor. What had seemed foolish early in her life now became very important. The path of self-emptying she followed is the path all holy men and women must follow. The liturgical feast of Saint Angela of Foligno is celebrated on January 7.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

In a time of summer when news is light the guys still manage to put together a decent episode were they discuss Soderbloms spot with the team, minor signings, Foligno our captain, Blackhawk game grades, and Mount Rushmore of Stanley Cup Era Role Players. (0:00) Intro(3:27) Arvid Soderblom gets his arbitration hearing scheduled and the guys discuss what the ruling could be and if there is a chance they get a deal done before hand and avoid that nastiness. (5:06) The guys discuss Louis Crevier and goaltender Stanislav Berezhnoy to two year deals. The latter leads to a discussion of the Hawks goaltending depth and that there could be some hard calls to be made down the line which is always a good thing. (12:12) Nick Foligno played host to some of the younger Hawks in Sudbury and while the photos make him seem like a proud father, the guys talk about how important Foligno is to this team and developing the new culture in the Blackhawks locker room.(18:07) Connor Bedard and Spencer Knight get named pretty high on a few NHL list. Tanner and Jarom argue if Spencer Knight was ripped off or if he was placed exactly where he belongs among goalies under 25 years old.(23:22) The Hawks released the latest episode of Every Shift and because it revolved around the draft and development camp it only makes sense the guys take the time to complain about the draft process.(27:21) The NHL Schedule is here so Jarom picked out a few Hawks games that seemed important and then the guys graded them on how must watch TV those games are. Tanner reads the list of NHL.com must see games and lets say there was a lot of disagreements from the guys on those. We're talkin' about a real old school beauty on the show today — he of the odd bucket and leapin' celly, #71 (or #17) Mike Foligno! He liked to muck about and plant himself in front of the net and plied his trade for the Wings, the Sabres and the Leafs, with a short stint in his final year with Florida. His sons Nick and Marcus carry on his goal celebration tradition to this day, and both play a similar hard nosed style. We check in on the Cup finals, which has been quite the tilt so far — Marchy is proving that he's worth his weight in free donairs, while Cool Stu Skinner has been twirling his great ‘stache at the competition! We're looking at Game 7 folks, and we haven't even seen game 3 yet! Finally, we think that the NHL coaching merry-go-round has stopped for a minute, so we get you caught up on who's new, who's old and who's back in a different role. Will ol' Pete DeBoer be out of work for long?

Send us a textIs Purgatory just a theological idea—or can it leave behind physical evidence? In this powerful episode, Ken and Janelle share one of the most astonishing Catholic mystical encounters ever recorded: the 1859 apparition of Sister Teresa Gesta, a holy nun who returned from Purgatory to leave a burnt handprint on a wooden door in her convent near Foligno, Italy. This remarkable event was thoroughly investigated by the Church and even documented by respected Catholic figures like St. Thomas Aquinas, Monsignor de Ségur, and Father F.X. Schouppe in The Dogma of Purgatory. It's a chilling reminder that Purgatory is real, that even the smallest sins are purified after death, and that our prayers for the dead truly matter.

Full Text of ReadingsWednesday after Epiphany Lectionary: 214The Saint of the day is Saint Angela of FolignoSaint Angela of Foligno's Story Some saints show marks of holiness very early. Not Angela! The liturgical feast of Saint Angela of Foligno is celebrated on January 7. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
