The real-life ‘Shark Week' that inspired Peter Benchley's novel Jaws kicked off with the shocking mauling of 23 year-old Charles Vansant off the coast of Beach Haven on 1st July, 1916.  At first, the public refused to believe that a shark could be responsible. But five days later, another attack occurred at Spring Lake, claiming the life of Swissman Charles Bruder, whose legs were completely severed.  The spate of shark attacks that followed this became known as ‘12 Days of Terror', capturing national attention, and leading President Woodrow Wilson to authorise federal aid to ‘drive away' the sharks from New Jersey.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly unpick the early hypotheses, from killer whales to sea turtles; explain why so many beachgoers couldn't swim; and consider how one shark ended up in the hands of a Barnum & Bailey lion tamer…  CONTENT WARNING: gore, description of death by shark attack Further Reading: • ‘The Real-Life 'Jaws' That Terrorized the Jersey Shore' (HISTORY, ): https://www.history.com/news/the-real-life-jaws-that-terrorized-the-jersey-shore • ‘Spielberg tells of guilt over harm hit film Jaws may have done to sharks' (The Guardian, 2022): https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/dec/18/steven-spielberg-tells-of-guilt-jaws-film-sharks • 'SHARK ATTACK Caught on Camera!' We set out to make a Michigan Bucket List show and ended up with a guest list that is all over the map and book-ended by two well-known names, one in the travel industry, and one for abiding while creating an incredible theatrical destination for all to enjoy. We were pleased as punch to confirm an interview with Pauline Frommer. Yes, of that Frommer family, the kind of kings of travel publications. We were interested to hear some of her experiences around Michigan as a travel expert, and what she sees trending in the next few years. She did not disappoint. Frommer is the Co-President of FrommerMedia, Editorial Director of Frommer's Guidebooks, author of the best-selling "Frommer's EasyGuide to New York City" and "Frommer's New York City Day by Day", and co-host of "The Travel Show" You see what I'm saying? This woman is an expert. Then we turn closer to home, and visit with our friend, and radio legend, Mary Ellen Murphy. This award-winning DJ hosts The Morning Show on WGHN in Grand Haven. Passionate about the Tri-Cities region, which also includes Spring Lake and Ferrysburg, Mary Ellen shares her thoughts on 'beach time' plus what she loves about this area. One thing I love about Mary Ellen is her fantastic studio at WGHN, which looks directly out over the Channel and boardwalk in GH. You can see what she sees on their live camera link here. Pro beach-going move: check out their OTHER cam for live beach conditions, so you know before you go.An old friend then calls in, all the way from Savannah Georgia. We first met Matt DeWitt at the bar he used to own in Ishpeming, a little gem of a spot called Brogie's that served one hell of a Bloody Mary. May have been named a top glass by a couple of food writers we know. Anywho, Matt has been having quite an adventure the last few years, working for that crazy baseball team, the Savannah Bananas. We get to hear all about what that's been like, plus what he misses most about the Upper Peninsula. It may, or may not, be a certain sausage. EDIT: I almost forgot! Matt and his wife EV have started a new website, crabrankoons.com. They rank crab rangoons and all derivatives. Yes, you cannot make this up. These are the people we love at Behind the Mitten. Finally our last interview, and yes, it's a big one. Jeff Daniels took time to chat with little old us about his incredible Purple Rose Theatre."Founded in 1991 by acclaimed actor and Chelsea native Jeff Daniels, The Purple Rose Theatre Company is a creative home for theatre artists to define our collective Midwestern voice. It is a place for emerging talent and seasoned professionals to learn more about and to practice their craft; a place for patrons of the arts to laugh, cry, and perhaps even learn something new," according to their website. We learned it is so much more than that, not just to Daniels, but to the Chelsea community that has been truly transformed by its presence over the last thirty years. Daniels' passion for theatre and acting is pretty evident, but what I found most interesting is that The Purple Rose focuses on laughter, the best medicine, and developing hilarious plays from the ground up, all to bring some much-needed joy to our world. How awesome is that?Their newest play had me giggling just reading the summary. Directed by Rhiannon Raglan, and written by David MacGregor, "The Anti Christ Cometh" premiers to the world on March 22 and runs at the theatre through May 25. "The Antichrist Cometh is a comedy about a happily married man who discovers that he might be the Antichrist. Will he be able to enjoy a small dinner party with his loving wife, former college roommate, and his roommate's devoutly religious fiancée? Or will their home-cooked meal usher in the Apocalypse?"Daniels goes a little bit deeper with us, and let me say, this sounds like quite the dinner party, and one you don't want to miss. Remember, it's a comedy! Chelsea is a charming, lively downtown with great restaurants and shopping, so when you go to a show, plan on making a day of it.It was a pleasure talking with Mr. Daniels, who at the end of the day, is just another Michigander like the rest of us. It's his passion for this project, for the Purple Rose and all that it might mean, that sets him apart. We salute his years of hard work building this Michigan gem. Daniels is also a big Lions fan and attended a few games this year, so you know we had to ask him about that. Who could we possibly have on the show next week? Who knows! "4:09 to 9:02" Boston To Oklahoma and New York CitiesBeyond the Bombingsby David HamelA newlywed couple were in the midst of unsuccessful fertility treatments at a nearby center during the time of the Oklahoma City bombing which occurred at 9:02 am on April 19, 1995. The personal heartbreak and simultaneous loss of 15 children at the day care center in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and its aftermath set a sorrowful resonating tone of great sadness, acceptance, and getting on with life for the veteran marathon runner and his wife. But the impact of the second aircraft at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 at 9:02:59 am assured that would not be so. That is, until the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, 2013. The clock at the finish line during the first explosion reminded him of his first marathon time of 4:09 in 1990. That "Hey You" moment coupled with the death of an eight-year-old boy near the finish line and a very close date of the Oklahoma City bombing reignited long dormant reactions and emotions of 1995 and earlier life events. Thus began a passionate journey to reclaim the Boston and Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon finish lines in 2014 and 2016. This is the story of an Air Force Sergeant and his wife, of teddy bears and babies that weren't to be & ... and of letting go.David Hamel is a retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant serving over 30 years on active duty in aircraft maintenance and as Director of the Air Force Enlisted Heritage Research Institute in Montgomery, Alabama. He is a past Alabama State Commander of the Korea Defense Veterans of America and past Eastern District Commander of AMVETS, North Carolina. He has performed 175 Prisoner of War-Missing In Action (POW-MIA) remembrance ceremonies and has served as the state POW-MIA Chairman for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Departments of Alabama and North Carolina, and is a past National Aide-de-Camp. He is also an All-State and All-American Post Commander. Dave is an Eagle Scout and served in scouting as a Troop Chartered Organization Representative, Eagle Scout advisor, and as State and National Scouter for the VFW.Completing 31 years of marathon racing, and locally known as the “Ray Road Runner,” Dave has finished 131 marathons in all 50 states, and has two Boston Marathon finishes. Nicknamed “Scrappy” in the Fort Bragg, NC ice hockey community, he is a bronze and silver medalist team winner of the annual North Carolina State Games .Dave is a motivational speaker on fitness and self-preservation, and Air Force history and heritage. Santa Rosa Pizzeria menu. The co-owners of Santa Rosa Pizzeria, Peter Lopez and Ignacio Ruiz, join Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. Peter is a frequent guest and occasional co-host on Brew Ha Ha, here is Peter's most recent BHH episode, from March of this year. Peter Lopez is back with Ignacio Ruiz, aka Nacho, as co-owners of the new Santa Rosa Pizzeria. They have been open for about a month. They are active on Facebook, at this link. Nacho tells the story of how he and Peter worked together in another restaurant, then they reconnected. Peter found a location that used to be under another name. Also, Barolo's Pizza was there for about 15 years. So the place has a pizza pedigree. In less than a month they started! The Art of Pizza Peter also runs Juncture Taproom and Ignacio is also the controlling partner of Art's Place, so he is also an ideal partner for Peter. Ignacio learned pizza while working in an Italian restaurant, and he also makes pizza at Art's Place. Art was a master and taught the art to Ignacio. Art Ibleto's kids still control the Pasta King name, so he steers clear of things like their famous ravioli. They do have an extensive wine and beer menu. They named all the pizzas after Santa Rosa icons, including Jerry Robinson, former Raider and All-American UCLA Bruin linebacker of yesteryear. Jerry Robinson (84) UCLA, 1978 Peter considers his place to be a family friendly taproom, with something for everyone of all ages. He wants people to feel comfortable and safe. They even have their own Charlie Brown statue. He originally named Juncture Taproom “Confluence.” Juncture is at the corner of Mission and Montgomery, close to Howard Park and Spring Lake, where Rincon Valley and Bennett Valley come together. There is a band called Igor and the Red Elvises that plays there. They are a great band, a lot of fun. They won Star Search with Ed McMahon on TV long before American Idol and The Voice. They took the money, bought a van an went on tour. They have a cult following. Santa Rosa Pizzeria is open noon to 8 pm, and they do deliveries from 11:30 to 8:30. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Herlinda brought a guitar pick from the Beatles museum in Liverpool and she has lots more stories from Liverpool in the later part of the show. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options.

Tom welcomes returning guest Peter Grandich to the show to discuss the U.S. reaching the practical limit for debt and the serious decline it is facing. They discuss the widespread problems of crime, health issues, and the decline in family values, as well as Canada now advocating medically assisted dying for the elderly and those with mental health issues. Peter believes the BLS has been providing overly optimistic data and that it has never been this tough for small businesses, with labor being difficult to find. He suggests that in downturns, it is better to be a year too early than a day too late, and that gold is an example of an uncrowded trade. He also believes that the cryptocurrency space has largely blown up and won't be coming back anytime soon. Peter believes that we have seen the worst of inflation for the foreseeable future, but that inflation will remain higher than what we have become accustomed to. Within three years, he was appointed Head of Investment Strategy for a leading New York Stock Exchange member firm. He would hold positions as Chief Market Strategist, Portfolio Manager for four hedge funds, and a mutual fund that bore his name. His abilities have resulted in hundreds of media interviews, including Good Morning America, Fox News, CNBC, Wall Street Journal, Barron's, Financial Post, Globe and Mail, US News & World Report, New York Times, Business Week, MarketWatch, Business News Network and dozens more. In addition, he has spoken at investment conferences worldwide, edited numerous investment newsletters, and was one of the more sought-after financial commentators. Grandich has been a member of the National Association of Christian Financial Consultants, The New York Society of Security Analysts, The Society of Quantitative Analysts, and The Markets Technician Association. He is an active supporter of Athletes in Action, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Good News International Ministries, and Catholic Athletes For Christ. Through Athletes in Action, Grandich assisted with Bible study and chapel services for the New York Giants and New York Yankees from 2002 to 2016. His autobiography, Confessions of a Wall Street Whiz Kid, was first published in 2011 and is now on its fourth printing. Peter Grandich resides in New Jersey with his wife, Mary, and has one daughter, Tara. In 2015, he turned a three-decade dream into a reality by opening a storefront office in the "Norman Rockwell style" Jersey Shore town of Spring Lake. He then extended that vision by opening a satellite office in Millstone Township in 2019.

Nick's Bio:Nick Nauta has been practicing financial planning since moving to the Lansing area in 2006. After studying Financial Management and Economics at Northern Michigan University, Nick ventured into the financial planning industry. Having a young daughter and wife, Nick wanted to stay in Michigan. At the time he graduated, one of the few jobs available for a finance major was as a financial advisor.Nick struggled through his first few years in the profession. He relates the struggle to his early memories of money living in Spring Lake, Michigan. One of the things he learned about money when he was growing up was the people who seemed to have the most of it, weren't inherently happier than those who didn't. When he started in the financial advising industry, the profession appeared to be all about making money, something he didn't hold in high esteem. Some years later, around the time his son was born, Nick finally started to figure out his place in the financial planning world. He was challenged to answer the question of why he did what he did. Thinking back on his early memories of money, he concluded he was in the financial planning profession to help people realize their life goals.Nick enjoys giving back to the community as well as his profession. He is currently the past president of the Davies Project, Treasurer of Loaves and Fishes homeless shelter, President of Delta-side business association, and Secretary of Kiwanis of Delta Township.
