Can the Dallas Stars continue their nascent winning streak tonight against the Minnesota Wild? It may depend on whether they try to beat scoring with scoring. Wes and Mark think the Victory Green Gang needs to expect to win. And they devoted our latest podcast to talking about how the Stars go about accruing points against the Central Division rivals who happen to be ahead of them. In this edition: Can we chalk up the Stars' latest victories to systematic improvements, or to catching tired (and possibly bad) teams on the second half of a back-to-back? How much better is team defense with John Klingberg than without? How hard is a hard turtle, and how do the Stars stop doing that? Would you rather clear the zone or keep everything to the outside? How are the Stars adjusting to being a three-line team after being a one-line team since the Victory Green heyday of Aleš Hemský and Patrick Sharp ended? Is Riley Tufte playing enough minutes to make a trip to Big D worth it? Or is he likely to learn his best lessons off the ice while in Dallas? When you have a Denis Gurianov, how much do you use a Denis Gurianov? How is Ryan Suter doing next to Klinger? Where are Jake Oettinger's skills improving? And how filthy will Roope Hintz get now that he's riding the regression monster? What's your prediction for tonight's game? Here's to another W! (Full disclosure: Stargazing's ratings go up after those, so it's not as if we're disinterested.) As always, we invite burning questions from every end of the spectrum. Introduction: A piece in The Athletic this week indicated there is an expectation within MLB that Byron Buxton will be traded by the Twins. Though there wasn't much news beyond what has already been reported -- the sides keep talking about a new contract but can't agree on terms; the Twins worry about his injury history but also the backlash for letting him go -- it was a reminder that we're into the baseball offseason with no resolution in sight. And it's also an opportunity to restate this: trading Buxton would be a giant mistake that the Twins would regret on multiple levels. 7:00: Star Tribune Wild beat writer Sarah McLellan joins the show to give an evaluation of the team after 15 games. Though there have been some rough edges, including sluggish starts from Kirill Kaprizov and Kevin Fiala and a certain lack of sharpness in keeping pucks out of the net, a 10-5 record bodes well for the rest of this season. And the new-look Wild blue line will greet an old friend Thursday when Ryan Suter's Dallas Stars visit Xcel Energy Center. 26:00: The Wolves only collected half of all available defensive rebounds in Wednesday's game against the Kings, leading coach Chris Finch to raise his voice at halftime. The response came after the break, with Minnesota getting a much-needed 107-97 win. But defensive rebounding remains a big issue.

Stargazing: A Big D Puckcast | Defending Big D

With seven points after seven games, the Dallas Stars still haven't won in regulation. And with two losses so far this week, fans would really rather see that sooner (tonight) rather than later (sometime next month, or year, or whenever). Wes and Mark spent another week night pondering the enigma of the Stars, and now they're sharing it with you. In this episode: Should we be happy that Jason Robertson is back and contributing, or concerned that the Stars need a 22-year-old sophomore to kick-start the offense? Where are the good omens for the Stars' divisional standing? On the other hand, where is the difference between being in the playoff conversation and hanging out at the bottom of the barrel? What should we make of Ryan Suter's start in Dallas? What, specifically, is Braden Holtby doing right? Are you comfortable with Anton Khudobin in net on Holtby's nights off? Is Radek Faksa having a good season so far? Just how well is Miro Heiskanen performing? Is Esa Lindell...actually doing a great job? And can the Stars keep playing “Stars hockey” like they played the first two periods of the Vegas game? How many quality scoring chances is enough? Let's discuss it, while we're Stargazing. On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Sarah Avampato of Locked on LA Kings joins for a crossover episode! We start by looking at whether or not the Kings could potentially sneak into the playoffs in a weak Pacific Division. We also look at the injury impact that the loss of Quintin Byfield will have on the rest of the lineup. We finish by discussing players that Wild fans should keep an eye on any time the Wild and Kings square off, as they do on Saturday! On the Wild front, Sarah asks what sort of relief the State of Hockey felt when Kirill Kaprizov finally signed his extension. We also discuss what sort of roster development the Wild will have to cultivate when the Ryan Suter and Zach Parise buyouts reach their maximum amounts, with all eyes being on Marco Rossi, Adam Beckman and Matt Boldy. Sarah also asks who besides Kirill Kaprizov Kings fans should keep an eye on from the Wild roster. We look at Saturday's game to finish things up. Sara wonders what the Kings need to do to slow down Kirill Kaprizov, with Seth suggesting they throw as much attention his way as possible. Seth is concerned about the potential of facing Jonathan Quick, who had good numbers against the Wild last year despite the Wild winning the series. Sarah says he may not even play, but either way we should be in for a great game between the two teams! Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! On today's episode of Locked on Wild, we look at season expectations for the Wild's starting defensemen. For Jared Spurgeon and Alex Goligoski, will we see a similar level of production as we did with Spurgeon and Suter last year? If Alex Goligoski can get through the season without us saying "we really miss Ryan Suter", then I will consider his season a huge success. Can Spurgeon and Goligoski beat their statistical projections? Do we have any concerns at all with Spurgeon heading into the season? For Jonas Brodin and Matt Dumba, can they both keep or add offense to the arsenal in 2021-22? For Brodin, he found a high level of goal scoring last year. Was that a fluke or a new element he's added to his skillset? Matt Dumba's numbers have been slipping for a few years. Can he regain his offensive swagger or will he further regress? For Dmitry Kulikov and Jon Merrill, can they do the little things well like Carson Soucy and Ian Cole did last year? We didn't hear their names really at all, and for a 3rd line D pairing, that sort of under the radar play does WONDERS. If they aren't able to do that for the Wild, they may have some major problems that will have to be addressed. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Introduction: Host Michael Rand takes note of Wild owner Craig Leipold's comments Wednesday on Ryan Suter and Zach Parise plus the Kirill Kaprizov signing. On both fronts, it was a good dose of honesty from the Wild owner. Leipold said he would do the Parise and Suter signings again "in an absolute second" and said he was convinced Kaprizov would sign. 6:00: Star Tribune columnist La Velle E. Neal III joins the show to talk about some interesting Twins news about reassigning their hitting coach and his plan to put Jorge Polanco back at shortstop in 2022 (which has Rand's support as well). Plus Neal and Rand revisit the predictions they made about individual performances for Twins players six months ago to see who fared better. Let's just say La Velle did better than Rand -- and the Twins. 21:00: Four things about Phil Miller's season-ending Twins roster breakdown caught Rand's eye. 25:00: Some love for the Wild Card format, something MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred actually got right. In this episode: Should we worry that Dallas' inability to close out a game in overtime seems to have become the recurring theme for 2021? Can the team shake its tendency to play 40 minutes of decent hockey in a 60-minute game? Is it too soon to tell if Jason Robertson taken over Jason Dickinson's role as the designated target? ...Is it a Jason thing? Will Rick Bowness' plan to give each of the Stars' goaltenders an entire preseason game turn out to be the best way to pick a starter? What does Jake Oettinger need to do to keep himself in that conversation? And where is Thomas Harley on the AHL-to-NHL continuum? Introduction: Host Michael Rand has two main thoughts about Tuesday's big news that the Wild signed Kirill Kaprizov to a new contract. 1) Obviously it's a good thing that they got it done. It took longer than expected, but not quite long enough to be a training camp distraction, and the five-year, $45 million term is right on what Rand projected a month ago. 2) If signing Kaprizov was difficult, now comes the even harder part: navigating future seasons with so much money tied up in Zach Parise and Ryan Suter's buyouts. 6:00: The Star Tribune's Jeff Day joins the show to talk about St. Thomas football and how the transition to Division I has been going so far. The Tommies are 1-1 in football and face Butler on Saturday in their Division I home opener. There are infinite unknowns within the UST athletic department regarding the transition, which is both intimidating and invigorating all at once, Day said. 20:00: Rand runs through a bunch of good listener questions, including one about Ben Simmons and the report Tuesday that Simmons won't report to 76ers camp and won't play for Philadelphia again. What implications does that have on a possible trade to the Wolves? Plus questions about the Vikings, a hot take on Marco Rossi and a Twin Cities Marathon query.

Introduction: Host Michael Rand declares there is a new contender this summer for most disappointing Minnesota team, which is hard to fathom considering how bad the Twins have been. But consider: After a 4-0 drubbing at Sporting KC on Wednesday, Minnesota United's season record stands at 8 wins, 8 losses and 7 draws. It doesn't get much more mediocre than that, and there's one more particularly alarming eight: The Loons, who had championship aspirations at the start of the year, are now in eighth place in the Western Conference -- and only the top seven make the playoffs. 5:00: The Wolves introduced all of their offseason acquisitions to the media on Wednesday, with perhaps the most interesting voice coming from veteran guard Patrick Beverley. He has played in 59 career playoff games and he said accountability is the biggest thing the Wolves will need in order to succeed this season. 8:00: Star Tribune columnist La Velle E. Neal III joined Rand to talk about a number of subjects, including which NFC North team should be most alarmed about its Week 1 loss. Neal's answer: The Vikings, even though the Packers lost 38-3. Topics also covered: His upcoming weekend in Colorado and Arizona to cover the Gophers and Vikings; Joe Ryan's injury scare; and soccer Twitter. 27:00: Wild prospect Marco Rossi is back on the ice and feeling great after a scary year of COVID complications. That's great news for him -- and the Wild, which will need all the young talent it can get after buying out Zach Parise and Ryan Suter.

On Monday's episode, Patrick Reusse joins host Michael Rand as they catch up on all the biggest stories from the weekend and beyond. First up, Reusse and Rand tackle last week's huge decision by the Wild and GM Bill Guerin to buy out the contracts of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter -- a move that will save the Wild on the salary cap in the short term but has plenty of long-term implications. Reusse wants Wild fans to remember that Parise and Suter, though coming well short of delivering a championship during their nine seasons here, did help revive a sluggish franchise. With the Bucks one game away from winning the NBA title, they also examine this question: Why don't Minnesota fans, who tend to loathe Wisconsin teams, seem to hate the Milwaukee Bucks? Quite the contrary, they actually seem to like the Bucks. And the poor Twins. If they thought they could do something special coming out of the All-Star break, as slugger Nelson Cruz said, getting shut out twice and being swept in Detroit probably wasn't the version of special they had in mind. But it does sharpen the focus even more on the impending trade deadline, including what to do with Jose Berrios. The Loons beat Seattle for the first time? Reusse wants to see more.

Chicago TomaHawk (Podcast About The Chicago Blackhawks)

Podcast 43: -A lot of speculation on whether fans would take Seth Jones or Dougie Hamilton. Matt and Mike go over both players and who they would rather have. -Zach Parise and Ryan Suter were bought out of their contracts. Neither were happy. We think there is going to be a big market for Suter. He is still a great defenseman who has a lot to add even at his age. Parise on the other hand has had a decline and may end up with the Islanders. -Shea Weber has a bunch of injuries that he is dealing with. Foot, Ankle, knee, and thumb injuries. These injuries may force him to retire because he may not be able to play next year. Not sure if this is going to happen just speculation.
