In this Report, Richard Wolstencroft discusses the continued persecution of Pauline Hanson. Federal Court Justice Angus Stewart recently ruled that Hanson violated 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act for telling Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi to ‘piss off back to Pakistan' in response to Faruqi's slur against the late Queen Elizabeth II. Ryan Hendrickson is a 13-Year Green Beret, Author, and Landmine Recovery Expert. While serving as an 18C in 2010 on his first deployment as a Green Beret, he suffered an IED blast that should have killed him - a devastating injury that would have cost him his leg, if not for the Army's new THOR 3 program and a newfound appreciation for medical limb salvage. To the surprise of nearly all parties involved, Ryan returned to the battlefield a mere 18 months later, where he continued to serve for 12 more years at the Tip of the Spear. Later, he'd pen a memoir of his personal struggles from his deployment journals called ''Tip of the Spear: The Incredible Story of an Injured Green Beret's Return to Battle' along with pivoting into military contracting, but he felt a new calling when the Russia/Ukraine engagement began to swell in 2023. He headed into the chaos, performing his unique specialty - the deadly art of landmine removal - where he continues to work today. One thing's for sure - with Ryan's newfound appreciation on life (and surprise in-studio guests like Scott Huesing in tow), anything's possible. After having a fabulous week camping at the best campsite in Wales, I'm back out after the carp. I had a good walk around, looking for any carpy signs at about 1400 hours when I arrived. This is probably the worst time to arrive here, as the carp are generally very inactive. I couldn't find a thing. I studied the weather forecast first thing this morning, thinking if I don't see anything, where will they most likely be? The winds were due to blow from the North West or West over these few days, which would give me a fair few options along the East Bank. The temperatures were going to be around 18C and cloudy, making these few days look like perfect fishing conditions, as long as the weather forecast is correct.
With my gardening jobs done for this week and the weather conditions completely different from last week's heatwave, I thought it best to head down to the lake early Tuesday evening, giving me three nights at my disposal, if I felt it was worth it. The forecast was pretty good, with low pressure and a southerly wind. There was still a lot of freshwater flowing in off the forest, especially after the recent 14 hours of heavy rain. The high today was 15C and will only rise to about 18C

Heatwaves are silent killers, and the death toll is often recognised only months after the official figures emerge. If heatwaves were named as storms to highlight the risk they pose, the dangers would be more widely recognised. Indeed, one in Europe in 2017 got more attention when it was nicknamed Lucifer, which kills many more people each year in the UK than in any storm. Heat exposure has also been linked with an increased risk of death or disability among children, older adults, people with chronic medical conditions and those who are obese. The heatwave that swept through Europe in the summer of 2003 caused an excess of deaths over the normal seasonal average. Extreme heat exposure can be dangerous for those already vulnerable to the heat, such as the elderly or those living in poorly ventilated buildings. In addition, excessive heat exposure is linked to increased crime rates, domestic violence incidents, and increased instances of road traffic accidents. In the UK, for example, one in six deaths is attributable to extreme heat. With temperatures in the United Kingdom breaking records this month, what is the impact of heat waves on your health? Because higher temperatures can pose additional challenges for individuals with Physical and Mental Health conditions. Roughly 1,000 to 3,000 people die every year as a result of heat. Stress-related conditions that are increased by heat waves are known as psychosocial stressors. These include the subjective experience of a perceived threat from hot weather and the social impact of staying outside during these conditions. The public health implications can be demonstrated by the fact that these psychosocial stressors often result in higher rates of anxiety, depression, aggression, addiction and suicide during extreme heat. Are heatwaves a consideration for your mental health? “In recent years, there's been an increasingly large body of research showing us that heatwaves exacerbate outcomes for those with underlying psychiatric illnesses,” says Dr Laurence Wainwright, (University of Oxford UK). Rates of suicides go up, and for those with existing conditions, symptoms can be intensified” he adds, noting that for people with conditions such as bipolar disorder, extreme heat can trigger manic phases. Prof Tahseen Jafry, Glasgow Caledonian University, said: “With increased temperature rises, there is evidence to show that there are more frequent visits to hospitals for mental health, mental illnesses and behavioural and mood disorders.” A study published in 2007 found a 3.8% increase in suicide rates for every 1C rise in average temperature above 18C. Researchers also found that higher temperatures are associated with increased aggression and violence – possibly due to the impact on various hormones – and can affect cognitive function, leaving people feeling fuzzy-headed. In Australia, where suicide rates were found to be higher on days when temperatures reached above 20 °C (68 °F). Scientists have found and videoed South Pole explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship The Endurance, which was lost in November 1915. 107 years later, the wooden ship has been located three kilometres down in the icy Antarctic Weddell Sea, in remarkable condition. The ship was crushed by sea-ice and sank, forcing Shackleton and his crew to abandoned ship and escape on foot and in small boats. The mission's leader veteran polar geographer Dr John Shears had described it as "the world's most difficult shipwreck search". The crew battled constantly-shifting sea-ice, blizzards, and temperatures dropping down to -18C. Kathryn speaks with photographer and drone operator on the expedition James Blake, son of New Zealand sailor and environmentalist Sir Peter Blake and Lady Pippa.

UPCOMING EVENT: If you'd like to attend a Q&A session with Combat Story's Ryan Fugit, please fill out this form (https://tinyurl.com/552ewmu5). Today we hear the Combat Story (Part 1 of 2) of Ryan Hendrickson, a former Green Beret and Special Forces Engineer (18C) who served multiple combat deployments to Afghanistan as part of 7th Special Forces Group. Before joining the Army, Ryan served in the Air Force and Navy, where he was one of the first ships on scene to support the USS Cole after it was attacked. As a Green Beret, Ryan has a remarkable story in which he survived stepping on an IED that changed his life, but was unable to keep him out of the fight. After months of reconstructive surgery, he went back to the teams and Afghanistan, where he saved multiple lives and earned the Silver Star. He is the author of Tip of the Spear and an adventure seeker who's travelled most of the world. He still supports the war fighter as a contractor where he continues to save lives. This is the first in a two part interview, covering Ryan's life and combat up until stepping on the IED. In the second interview, we'll touch on his recovery and several future combat operations, including the one in which he received the Silver Star. In this episode of The Daily Breakdown - The Week That Went: Conflicting messages on COVID vaccinations - AZ is fine, just give up your legal rights. The left celebrates the death of Donald Rumsfeld, but how did they deal with the death of true evil? And what the hell is the use of conservative governments? Why do we keep electing them if they don't do anything that's actually conservative? Like defend free speech and get rid of garbage laws like 18C. Why raise 18C? Because 18C created an environment where people were afraid to question the bona fides of Dark Emu. How resilient is your heart right now and do you feel like you're in a space to cultivate more joy? If you've been following the news, you'll know that the majority of our listeners in Texas are dealing with the aftermath of a massive winter storm right now. One that has left many of our friends in Austin without power, heat, and running water for 4-5 days straight whilst the outside temperatures dipped down to 0F (that's -18C)… the lowest they've been in decades. Yikes! It was one of those “once-in-a-century” snowstorms that left people shook to the core. And its moments like these that build resilience and character. You find your true friends and strengthen bonds in your local community and your neighborhood. My special guest today is Dr. Eva Selhub and she's simplifying how to cultivate joy through resilience. No matter what hard season you're going through right now… like those in Texas (or hello, pandemic!), she shares the secrets to shift your mindset now, so you can get back to center and back to finding your joy faster. Here's how. My special guest today is Dr. Eva Selhub and she's simplifying how to cultivate joy through resilience. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: How she defines the concept of ‘resilience,' especially for entrepreneurs and small business owners Like a high performance athlete who trains their muscles, how to build your resilience through mindset work What the 6 pillars of resiliency are and a deep dive into how to practice ‘emotional equilibrium' How to avoid the ‘victim's mindset' when things seem to be spiraling out of control …and ultimately, we talked about stress. It's inevitable, right? So, how to use stress to our advantage in business and in our lives the next time it happens. My heart goes out to everyone in Texas that are recovering from it all right now. And if that's you, I realize that you might want to blip off this episode, thinking… “I'm nowhere near being in the mindset to think about joy right now… I'm boiling water, I'm still in survival mode!” And I get that… but my hope is that you stick with us and give today's conversation a listen. Let it be a balm for your heart as it might spark something new inside you, that'll help in the healing process. And help you recover emotionally, too. You can do it, I believe in you! Q: Are you ready to cultivate more joy in your life? If yes, this one is for you. It's time to #DoTheThing! ---- Show notes available with all LINKS mentioned here: https://thesimplifiers.com/podcast/eva-selhub-cultivate-joy-through-resilience

On November 24, 1971, a man who identified himself as Dan Cooper bought a one-way ticket from Portland to Seattle on Northwest Orient Airlines flight #305. He paid for his ticket in cash and made his way to seat 18C. Shortly after take-off, he summoned one of the flight attendants, Florence Schaffner, to his seat. He handed her a piece of paper. The flight attendant, believing it to be a phone number or a pick-up line, slid the note into her pocket. But the man leaned forward. “Miss,” he said. “You’d better look at that note. Ryan Hendrickson is a Special Forces Engineer in the U.S. Army. Ryan transferred over to the Army in 2008 after completing enlistments in both the Navy and Air Force. He has many military deployments including Iraq, Afghanistan, and several South and Central American countries. In 2010, while serving as an 18C on his first deployment as a Green Beret, he survived an IED blast. He recalls, “my tib and my fib were poking out and I looked over, and my boot was probably about six inches away from me.” He was able to have a new procedure performed on his leg which allowed him to return to active duty, deploying in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 and earning him a Silver Star for his heroics on one particular mission. He wrote Tip of the Spear as a way to help him through some of the struggles he was experiencing. https://ryanmhendrickson.com/books/tip-of-the-spear/ _______________ This episode is brought to you by UnCanna. A public health specialist is backing plans to raise the minimum temperature in early childhood centres, saying it will reduce the spread of viruses. Ministerial documents show the government has asked the Education Ministry to consult on raising the minimum indoor temperature from 16C to the World Health Organisation benchmark of 18C. Researcher Mike Bedford says it is long overdue but he warns many centres will struggle to comply. Here's education correspondent John Gerritsen.
You must admit that 18C in late October is amazing.
We got a new monitor, I can now see the pointer! We’ve been zooming all week. We’re getting the hang of it. Neither of us are doing our classes the same way we did face to face. Oddly warm for this time of year, 18C when we went out, As I type this it is 21C. Lots of people don’t get how to do stuff over video conferencing platforms. I don’t like when the host of a meeting turns off everyone’s camera, nor does isabelle. In person do these people put bags over others’ heads? Arrows are followed better now, but people are slacking in the distancing department.

Stearic acid is an 18 carbon saturated fat that has intriguing effects on the human body. It's been shown to positively affect mitochondrial activity, and diets that are low in cause mitochondria to change activity and phenotype in negative ways. Mouse models of this fatty acid also suggest some profoundly powerful effects on glucose tolerance and visceral fat when compared to oleic acid (18C monounsaturated fat), and linoleic acid (18C polyunsaturated fat). I break it all down in this video and share my RBC fatty acid levels as well as a compelling n=1 case study of Emmy's weight loss with dietary shifts away toward more stearic acid and less linoleic acid. November 24, 1971.On the afternoon of November 24th, 1971, a man approached the flight counter of Northwest Orient Airlines at Portland International Airport. The middle-aged man wore a suit and had an attache case and referred to himself as “Dan Cooper”:The man boarded flight 305 and took his seat, 18C. Once the plane was in the air the man did something interesting: after ordering a bourbon and soda he passed the flight attendant a note. Assuming this to be a phone number the flight attendant ignored the note she was handed. Softly, the man leaned into the flight attendant and whispered…“Miss, you’d better look at that note, I have a bomb”Check out our socials for more updates!Twitter @MMMacabrePodInstagram: @mondaymorningmacabreFacebook @mondaymorningmacabreWebsite mondaymorningmacabre.comMusic by Kevin MacLeod ~ Moonlight Hall
Chapter 1: This week the earth witnessed the hottest temperatures ever recorded in the arctic. It was 38C - that's 18C above the average temperature for June. Just how remarkable is this? Let's chat to CBS meteorologist Jeff Berardelli... Guest: Jeff Berardelli, CBS News Meteorologist and Climate Specialist Chapter 2: Did you hear? Vancouver City Council passed a motion that will allow for drinking in some public locations. Niki Reitmayer spoke to Councillor Lisa Dominato who brought forward the motion. Chapter 3: Canada is an “attractive and permissive target” for Chinese interference that endangers the “foundations of our fundamental institutions, including our system of democracy itself,” according to a recent national security review. Guest: Sam Cooper, Global News reporter Chapter 4: The pandemic has raised no shortage of housing questions: for people who have been waiting to buy or sell since the outbreak began, will this summer bring more certainty? For renters looking to change locations, is now the right time to move? And for homeowners who have seen their nest egg deplete, will the equity in their homes rise again? GUest: Dane Eitel, founder of Eitel Insights Chapter 5: It's not everyday you hear a city councillor say that their constituents want to pay more taxes, but that's what happened yesterday on the Lynda Steele Show. Surrey Councillor Allison Patton was being asked about the assumption that the new Surrey Police Force would be able to share an IT network with the banished RCMP; meaning, if their gamble doesn't pay off, Surrey taxpayers could be on the hook for an unexpected nearly $30-million dollars in IT bills. Guest: Brenda Locke, Surrey City Councillor Guest: Mike Starchuk, former Surrey City Councillor & retired Surrey firefighter Chapter 6: For those who weren't laid off during the pandemic, many people began to work from home. Now that we're soon heading into Phase 3, many offices are reopening. But are you ready to head back to work? Guest: Steve Mossop, President of Insights West
You knew we would get to the issue eventually, Gun Control. But is gun control really the solution, what about the myriad other issues surrounding the recent events. What about the facts versus the narrative? In fact, 1992 was the most deadly school year, not 2018. So why isn’t that being discussed? Why isn’t there a discussion on societal influences like social media, isolation, the lack of sports, and positive outlets for youth? Of course, there are the mental health issues. All of these should be included in the conversation, so why is the world so hyper-focused on gun control? In this episode, D & J invites a guest Green Beret, on the show, Physical “Phys” – A former 18C and 18Z, who wrote his thesis on Conspiracism. (you’ll see why he got the pseudonym he did). So is there a conspiracy to be discussed in the gun control narrative? As always there are powerful people behind both sides who have an agenda, and each is playing a role in what we see in the media. Our conversation tries to expose some of these narratives, and peel the onion on some of the second and third-order effects of taking an easy victory in passing gun control. We hope our G’s enjoy the discussion and it sparks more discussion and discourse in your circle of friends and community. If you like what you hear, be sure to subscribe, write a review, and share it with your friends. If you disagree tweet us and let's talk about it. If you have a different perspective we would love to hear it, post it on our Facebook. This is about abandoning the spoon-fed narrative and evaluating the facts for yourself, think critically, and deeply on these issues because they matter. Let's hear what you have to contribute to the G-Base.

#ITC13: Jeremy Jones on the Toben case In 1995, new provisions were introduced into the Racial Discrimination Act. One of those sections, 18C, still excites considerable controversy. It prohibits certain kinds of offensive, racially motivated conduct. Jeremy Jones, from the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, was centrally involved in efforts to use s18C to deal with Holocaust deniers. One particularly long-running and significant instance of this involved Frederick Toben, who was imprisoned for contempt of the Federal Court, after many years of litigation.

A few weeks ago we broke out of the 2ser studios and headed down the road to our friends at 107 projects in Redfern, Sydney for the Just Words live event, sponsored by Audiocraft. We were overwhelmed when more than 100 of you turned up to sit in the dark and listen to us make a podcast as we put 18C on trial for ‘murdering’ free speech. In our very last episode of Just Words you will hear some familiar voices and some that are brand new to the series.Thank you if you came along and for those of you just catching up now, you are in for a treat! As the event was recorded live the sound is not as crisp as we usually like it, but we hope you feel like you are in the room.
Story 1 - What will 2050 be like in western Canada Recently the CBC website posted an article by Tara Carman about the potential changes that will take place in British Columbia in the next 30 years with just a 2.5C increase in temperature. The story paints a troubling picture for Canada's westernmost province. It's no secret that our weather has been changing. Here in the Rockies, we are getting more overall moisture during the summer months, but it is coming in fewer, more extreme weather events. Many of these events are separated by droughts that set the scene for huge fires. The 2016 fire, known as the 'Beast' which devastated Fort McMurray, Alberta is a classic example. Even in British Columbia's rainforests, there have been significant fires over the past few years. If Canada were to halve our greenhouse emissions by 2050, that would still result in a 2.5C increase in the annual average temperature for British Columbia. Most scientists agree that an increase of just 2C over pre-industrial levels is the point at which the impacts of climate change become far more difficult for humans to deal with. Globally, it will cause longer droughts, intense heatwaves and disruptions to global food supplies. It will also result in sea level increases of more than half a metre resulting in the flooding of many coastal communities like Vancouver and Victoria. Currently, we're already half way to this 2C threshold. We're already experiencing a warmer planet than we have experienced in the past 10,000 years. Despite this, British Columbia could easily exceed that 2C point and experience 2.5C. So, what might this mean for the province? Here are a few bullet points: • Sea level could rise by 30 cm • 25% of the provinces glaciers will have disappeared completely • Flooding in the lower mainland can exceed $32.7 billion • The wettest day of the year will be 10% wetter than it is today • Days above 25C will increase from the current 18/year to a whopping 30 If you like sandy beaches, like Jericho Beach, higher sea levels could erode away the sand during storms. The seawall in Stanley Park will take a pummeling. You can also forget flying into Vancouver during severe storms as the airport, along with other low lying areas like the ferry terminal at Tsawwassen may be under water. The world class salmon runs on the west coast are dependent upon cold water runoff from the mountains. The ideal temperature range for trout and salmon is between 13 and 18C. As ocean temperatures rise with the reduction in cold water melt due to glacier loss, the temperatures can quickly exceed 20C. The Fraser River is Canada's most productive salmon river, but according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the average summer temperature rose by 1.1C between 1953 and 1998. As winters become milder, smaller snowpacks also melt quicker - and may disappear long before the summer salmon runs begin. If the cold meltwater is finished before the run, than the water temperature has more opportunity to increase to the point of being harmful to salmon runs. Now while increases in growing seasons may seem super cool, we forget that there are certain advantages to being a cold climate. Cold temperatures are very efficient at keeping many problematic insect pests and diseases at bay. While many people accuse the mountain pine beetle of being an invasive threat, it is a naturally occurring insect of the western mountains. At its peak, it resulted in a loss of over half of British Columbians pine by 2012, and likely 58% by the end of this year. Historically, it was climate that kept it under control. All we needed to keep it at bay was proper winters. A few weeks of -40C was very handy but since we're not getting that any more, the beetles have been able to spread much further north than ever before. In several cases in the 2000s, beetles that were part of huge epidemics were able to hitch a ride on atmospheric winds and Dorothy their way to a new and wondrous land…no, not Oz, but worse…far into northeastern British Columbia and northwestern Alberta. The significance of this long-distance transport means that they have now migrated far enough north to make their way into the Canadian Shield. They've also made the jump from lodgepole pine to jack pine meaning they now have a straight run across northern Canada, all the way to the eastern pine forests of Ontario and south all the way to Texas and Florida Other pests moving north into the mountain west include the spotted-wing drosophila which attacks cherries before they have a chance to ripen. The females lay their eggs in the unripe fruit which allows them to destroy the fruit before harvest. Little Cherry Disease is another challenge that is hitting British Columbia orchards. It causes cherries to be smaller and more bitter and, as a result, unsalable. Globally, insect pests are moving north at a rate of almost 3km/year, increasing the already high rate of global crop loss of 10-16% annually. Some fungi, are moving north at a rate in excess of 10km/year (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/crop-pests-on-the-move-due-to-climate-change/). Around the world, there is no crop more important than wheat, and Canada produces almost 30 million tonnes of wheat every year. We are the worlds 6th largest exporter and climate change could challenge that supremacy. Recent studies show that an global increase in temperature of just 1 degree Celsius could reduce wheat production by between 4.1 and 6.4 percent. Globally, that would be a loss in excess of Canada's entire annual production and reach as high as 32 million tonnes. British Columbia's inland rain forest is also under threat of increased wildfires. While it's difficult to think of rain forests burning, we need to remember one important fact about the interior rain forest - it doesn't get enough rain to really be considered a rain forest. What it does get is some 10 metres of winter snowfall, at least it does today. While this doesn't make it truly qualify as a rain forest, it does release vast amounts of moisture through snow melt during the summer, and this helps keep the soils saturated. In essence, it simulates a rain forest. Should the summer rains, and winter snows diminish, these ancient forests could find themselves susceptible to increased fire hazard. Changing climates are changing the rules. Everything we grew up considering normal is now up for renegotiation. Climate is changing. Water regimens are shifting. While we may see more warm weather, the weather brings with it a constantly shifting collection of complications and implications. One thing that is critical in these changing times, is that we can trust the science that our economies are built upon. Everything we know about climate change is the result of climate models that help us to anticipate how we may be effected as the various elements of change are established. Next up…Climate in the age of Trump Story 2 - Climate Science in the Trumpocene Last week, I was lucky to be able to record a presentation by three of Canada's top experts on water and climate change, Bob Sandford, Dr. John Pomeroy and Dr. Joe Shea. Bob is the EPCOR Chair for Water and Climate Security and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment, and Health. He is the author of dozens of books including the United Nation's Water in the World We Want as well as Cold Matters: The State and Fate of Canada’s Snow and Ice. He has long been a friend and mentor. His message on the challenges facing climate scientists today is important for anyone who believes in the scientific process and the role of peer reviewed science. I hope you enjoy his presentation entitled: The Hard work of Hope. Scientific Fact vs Politicized Fantasy in the Post-Truth Trumpocene.

100 episodes, everyone! We bloody made it. Gosh. Thanks so much for getting onboard with this little show. I love doing it and hope you get something out of each episode. I've learnt so much talking to all the guests on the show over the past two years and hope to keep doing it for as along as I can. I can think of no better way to celebrate the century than with a live show at The Wheeler Centre with the national director of GetUp!, Paul Oosting. In this chat, recorded in front of a "sold-out crowd" (it was free, but still - pretty cool) as part of the Centre's Invasion of the Pod People series on Monday March 27th, Paul and I discuss what GetUp! is all about and how things are looking for progressives in this country at the moment. From the far-right's influence on the government to 18C to campaign finance reform to the crucial difference between viewing the electorate as "disenfranchised" as opposed to "disengaged", this is a really interesting and relevant discussion for now. PLUS we brainstorm about how to stop Dutton getting elected. A big thanks to Paul for flying down from Sydney just for the show and Helen and everyone at The Wheeler Centre for their help in making this happen. Here's to 100 more! This is the story of what happens when a free speech advocate attempts to use 18C to restrict what another person can say. In August 2016, Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm was interviewed on the ABC’s Insiders where he said offence is always taken, not given and if you don’t want to be offended by something that is up to you.Fairfax journalist Mark Kenny happened to be watching that very interview and decided to test Leyonhjelm’s proposition to the fullest. The result was a colourful 18C case that showed just how the law is working.
A low lying fence and a prejudiced neighbour see years of racial slurs rain down on an Aboriginal family. So how does 18C help to end racial abuse for everyday Australians? In 2SER's last episode of Just Words, we look at a little known 18C case that plays out in the front yards of a suburban street in Western Australia.

On March 30, a late-night debate in the Senate saw the Government's attempt to change section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act reach defeat, after an alliance by Labor, Greens, Nick Xenophon’s team and Jacqui Lambie, voted down the proposed changes - 31 to 28.This means that the plan to remove ‘offend, insult or humiliate” from section 18C and replace it with the term “harass” will no longer go ahead. Although we do expect to see some changes to the processes of the Human Rights Commission.Just Words producer Myles Houlbrook-Walk spoke to Senator David Leyonhjelm on March 21, a week prior to the bills defeat.

Just Words spoke to 18C plaintiff Jeremy Jones, who has used racial hatred laws to fight anti-Semitism since the section was introduced over 20 years ago.Jones is concerned that the proposed draft laws will open the flood gates when it comes to racist speech. He says the Coalition Government's plan to remove 'offend, insult and humiliate' and replace it with the term 'harass', as well as to more narrowly define the term 'intimidate' is a sign of 'immoral' leadership. Will the proposed changes to 18C still capture the concept of Holocaust denial?Just Words producer Anthony Dockrill spoke to Jeremy Jones, Director at the Australian Israel and Jewish Affairs Council on Wednesday 22 March, the day after Malcolm Turnbull flagged changes to Australia's race hate laws.

On March 21, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced a potential watering down of the controversial Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act.Under the proposal the words “offend, insult, humiliate” will be replaced by “harass”.The reforms were debated in the Senate on Tuesday, but little attention has been given to proposed procedural changes to the Australian Human Rights Commission, which will not only apply to 18C complaints but all complaints of discrimination handled by the Commission, including, sex, age, disability and race.Experts say this could make it more difficult for vulnerable members of the community to make complaints of vilification and discrimination.Just Words host Nic Healey spoke to Luke McNamara, Professor of Law from the University of New South Wales about the proposed 18C reforms and what they could really mean.Just Words Podcast Extra produced by Emma Lancaster
This week Alice and Mark find out what decisions in parliament house make independent senator Jacqui Lambie “want to get a bucket and vomit”. We also dissect what the hec is happening with dat 18C. Plus: make sure to turn your sound up for another round of spicy gossip in ~ gallery whispers ~.
Katharine Murphy and Gabrielle Chan look back on the issue of the week: 18C. It is unlikely the legislation will pass the Senate but if the government was serious about freedom of speech would it really be focussed on the Racial Discrimination Act?
It’s a case that asks more questions than it answers. In 2013, three non-Indigenous students walked into an Indigenous computer lab. What happened next nobody could have predicted. The court documents tell you that the case was Cynthia Prior against the Queensland University of Technology and three students. But the media conducted their own trial, and put the Human Rights Commission on the stand.
Today, pressure in the Coalition partyroom over 18C, crunch time for a number of government bills stuck in the Senate, and the Honourable Member for Pearce Christian Porter shows off his artistic skills.
Very few comedians have made an impression on the Aboriginal community in the way King Billy Cokebottle has. From radio to pubs to nightclubs, King Billy was one of Australia’s most established and renowned underground comedians. But that all changed when an 18C claim was brought against him. This is the story of a comedian, an activist and a mudcrab, and is one of the few 18C cases to successfully use the exemptions of 18D.

The case of Eatock and Bolt is what catapulted 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act into the media spotlight and fanned the flames that reignited the culture wars over this 20 year old piece of legislation.Despite what you may have read in the headlines, this case is really about some lazy journalism and the idea of where your identity comes from.

Today - the LNP threatens to split in Queensland, as divisions deepen within the Coalition about what to do with racial discrimination laws. Apologies it's late - Soundcloud (thanks to Amazon) had a few issues this morning... (A few things to add this morning - Scott Morrison's remarks on AM that changing 18C wont deliver any new jobs was an interesting rebuttal. We'll see how that plays out in the party room)
Is your right to offend greater than someone else's right not to be racially vilified? For over 20 years Australia has had a law that makes it illegal to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate someone because of their race. Our expert panel dissects the 18C Inquiry report that was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday February 28th.Hosted by Nic Healey, our experts include :Professor Adrienne Stone - Chair at Melbourne Law School, Melbourne UniversitySimon Breheny - Director of Policy at the Institute of Public Affairs.Dr. Linda Tucker - Employment and Discrimination Solicitor for Redfern Legal Centre. The Committee made 22 recommendations, but they stopped short of calling to axe section 18C, instead putting forward a ‘shopping list’ of options ranging from leaving the section unchanged to replacing the words "offend", "insult" and "humiliate" with the word "harass".This puts Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in a difficult position as it will now be up to him to decide whether to make any change to the law.
Today - a report into 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act is handed down, rumours about Malcolm Turnbull's replacement once he retires from politics, and Centrelink under fire for leaking personal details to Fairfax
This is the story of a holocaust denier, a holocaust survivor and the man who made it his mission to put himself in-between the two. Australia isn’t like other countries around the world where holocaust denial is a crime. In fact there were almost no ways to legally challenge holocaust denial until section 18C was introduced in 1994.

Earlier this week, footage aired of Attorney-General George Brandis speculating that Queensland's Liberal National Party might demerge. But Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce says this won't happen. “It's not going to happen. You know why? Because the people who make that decision is not George, or myself or anybody else, it's the membership and the membership would have to decide they want to do it and I haven't heard any big swathes of members having meetings saying that want to demerge.” Joyce tells Michelle Grattan the Nationals need to differentiate themselves from the Liberals. “I think people clearly understand there's a difference between the National Party and the Liberal Party. They recognise the qualities in both. If there wasn't a reason to differentiate then you would amalgamate. So I'm very - always have been - parochially National. "When I first came into politics back in 2005 and we got down to 12 members and senators I think, there was always this ‘oh we should just fold this show up' and I fought as hard as I could with others to make sure that didn't happen,” Joyce says. Acknowledging the threat posed by One Nation, Joyce puts that party's success into the context of a global wave of right-wing populism. “In those messages are things that matter to people - are messages that matter, that resonate. People wouldn't just change [their vote] because they got a giggle. They change because they get a message and go ‘yep, that's all I needed to know and that's enough for me to change my vote'. And that's what's happening now and we've got to compete in that space.” Joyce also has a reality-check for his colleagues pushing for changes to section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act. “There's a set of people who are more intensely involved in politics and they might be concerned - but if you think I go past the guys working on the road and as I say ‘g'day' to them and ask them how's the job going [that] they'd say ‘I really want to talk to you about 18C' - no they don't. "They are interested in the things they can touch. They do not occupy themselves in the deeper philosophical thoughts. "What we've got to be really careful of is once you leave the party room meeting - whether it's here or whether it's your branch meeting back in the country - don't think that's the issue that's going to get across to people in the pub on a Friday night.” Music credit: “What tomorrow brings”, by Ketsa on the Free Music Archive
Liberal senator James Patterson joins Katharine Murphy and Gabrielle Chan to discuss the movement to change or remove section 18C from the Racial Discrimination Act. We also look at the possible effects of Trump victory to our region
Many in the government have clamoured for changes to be made to section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act. Liberal backbencher Julian Leeser, however is not one of them. The member for the northern Sydney seat of Berowra tells Michelle Grattan there are definitely people within the Liberal Party who share his view that Section 18C “achieves a good balance between allowing people the freedom of speech which is necessary in a democracy like Australia but also protecting racial minorities from racial vilification and racial slurs”. “But the thing that I think unites everybody in this debate, regardless of your view on Section 18C, is that the process underscored in the QUT case and also in the Bill Leak case, just didn't work as well as it should have,” Leeser says.
Gay Alcorn has been a journalist for over 25 years. She's been a Washington correspondent, edited The Sunday Age, won three Walkley Awards and is now the Melbourne editor for Guardian Australia. I wanted to talk with Gay about a whole many things (we began by talking about this week's 4Corners report on the refugee children of Nauru and the roles and biases of journalism), but the bulk of our chat became focussed on the notion of "political correctness": the nature of our public discourse, section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act, identity politics and cultural appropriation. Gay describes herself as a progressive person but is a staunch advocate of the freedom of speech and has concerns about the way we go about talking with each other. Is it now longer possible for us to "reasonably disagree"? This piece by Gay on PC is the basic starting point for our chat, I'd recommend reading that first before listening here. We also got on to Lionel Shriver's speech at the Brisbane Writer's Festival and the ensuing furore; this will also be the focus of next week's episode with Yassmin Abdel-Magied. A continuation of last week's episode on Australian hate speech laws. In this part we discuss the Cronulla Riots, and how our backgrounds shape our views on this subject. My guest Ben (@Atticus_Amber) is a lawyer who works in the building where the Lindt Cafe siege took place - he happened not to be at work that day, but hearing him describe the moment when he realized hiss colleagues were trapped in a building is absolutely gut-wrenching. My guest Joel (@JoelRDodd) is an activist who describes himself as sensitive to racism, because he grew up a white South African and had to unlearn a lot of racism he grew up with. ---- articles mentioned in podcast: Jerry Coyne's blogpost https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2016/09/07/lecture-invitation-to-watson-rescinded-because-of-remarks-on-race-he-made-in-2007/ Free Speech Warriors are Missing the point abt 18C http://www.theaustralian.com.au/opinion/free-speech-warriors-are-missing-the-point-about-18c/news-story/bbe10592eb3a73dfd9c5d870b524f302 The impact of section 18C & other civil antivilification laws in Australia - University of Wollongong http://ro.uow.edu.au/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3103&context=lhapapers Catch up with part 1 of this discussion here: https://soundcloud.com/politeconversations/pc-panel-discussion-4-australian-hate-speech-laws-part-1 Support the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/nicemangos :)
