Bonus monologue: ancient North Africans and the Green Sahara

On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib comments on a new paper in Nature, Ancient DNA from the Green Sahara reveals ancestral North African lineage. Here is the abstract: Although it is one of the most arid regions today, the Sahara Desert was a green savannah during the African Humid Period (AHP) between 14,500 and 5,000 years before present, with water bodies promoting human occupation and the spread of pastoralism in the middle Holocene epoch1. DNA rarely preserves well in this region, limiting knowledge of the Sahara's genetic history and demographic past. Here we report ancient genomic data from the Central Sahara, obtained from two approximately 7,000-year-old Pastoral Neolithic female individuals buried in the Takarkori rock shelter in southwestern Libya. The majority of Takarkori individuals' ancestry stems from a previously unknown North African genetic lineage that diverged from sub-Saharan African lineages around the same time as present-day humans outside Africa and remained isolated throughout most of its existence. Both Takarkori individuals are closely related to ancestry first documented in 15,000-year-old foragers from Taforalt Cave, Morocco2, associated with the Iberomaurusian lithic industry and predating the AHP. Takarkori and Iberomaurusian-associated individuals are equally distantly related to sub-Saharan lineages, suggesting limited gene flow from sub-Saharan to Northern Africa during the AHP. In contrast to Taforalt individuals, who have half the Neanderthal admixture of non-Africans, Takarkori shows ten times less Neanderthal ancestry than Levantine farmers, yet significantly more than contemporary sub-Saharan genomes. Our findings suggest that pastoralism spread through cultural diffusion into a deeply divergent, isolated North African lineage that had probably been widespread in Northern Africa during the late Pleistocene epoch.

Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February every year. More than 30 million people in the United States are affected by over 7,000 rare diseases. Acute hepatic porphyria (AHP) is one of these rare diseases and carries with it a substantial disease burden. Delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis frequently occur in the journey of the person living with AHP, with the average time from symptom onset to diagnosis being 15 years. On today's episode, nurse practitioners (NPs) Drs. Laurie Connors and Paula Tucker discuss the clinical presentation and symptoms that are associated with AHP as well as management, attack prevention and treatment strategies. NPs are important members of the collaborative care team for people living with this condition and their families. One of the strangest murder sprees in American history occurred across Louisiana and Texas in the early 1910s. Local newspapers called the first crime "the most brutal murder in the history of this section," and there would be many more -- all linked to the same killer. The newspapers of the era, dealing with murder victims that were all African-Americans, claimed the killings were connected to a deranged Voodoo woman and a cult called the "Church of Sacrifice," which used the victims for bloody rituals. One of the most disturbing multiple murders in California history occurred on April 11, 1981, when three victims – a mother, her teenage son, and the son's friend – were beaten to death in a remote cabin in the woods while children slept soundly in the next room. A fourth victim – a 12-year-old daughter – vanished in the night, and her body was found a year later, miles away from the gruesome scene. The murders remain unsolved to this day, but it went on to inspire THE STRANGERS, one of the most terrifying films ever made.Get 20% OFF Manscaped + Free Shipping with promo code AHP at MANSCAPED.com! #ad #manscapedpodSponsored by BetterHelp. Analytical Hierarchy Process--check this as it is a method (and you can get tools) that absolutely help you with project prioritization.  Co-Host Mike Hannan and I talk with Stuart Easton, CEO of Transparent Choice, about this accessible approach tying decision science to project prioritization, selection and sequencing. Lending focus to executive teams, it helps us focus on what to do and more importantly, what not to do. Value is not an objective thing, and humans aren't great estimator. The AHP process let's anchor the value understanding, then break down value into meaningful application as criteria, creating transparency and standardization of the decision process, and more and better information as input.  The result, higher flow of project throughput completion, and better quality of project value.  What's not to like?

If you're willing to do what other aren't, you may stand to benefit immensely. Jorge Newbery, Founder, Chairman and CEO of AHP servicing, has made a career out of inventing himself out of thin air. Jorge's first big deal was a 298 unit apartment building in downtown Los Angeles in Skid Row for less than $3000/door in the late nineties. The prior three owners had been thrown in jail for violations, but Jorge saw immense value and had the confidence and bravado to take the project on. He ended up evicting those he needed to evict and fixing up the building and eventually make a $1,000,000 profit. Jorge went on to do an even bigger project with similar demographics and challenges in Kansas City and then a monstrous 1100 unit complex in Columbus, Ohio that was called Uzi Alley for all the gang warfare. Jorge ended up in an unwinnable situation to no fault of his own, where he became saddled with $26,000,000 in debt and hitting rock bottom before reinventing himself and creating American Homeowner Preservation, a company that has bought 1000's of single family non-performing notes from banks.

You might have been skeptical if you had heard about ketones and their benefits a few years ago. After all, ketones are a by-product of fat metabolism, and who wants to think about fat when trying to lose weight?  However, we're continuing to learn more and more about ketones, and it is becoming clear that they offer several benefits for athletes and people looking to improve their health.  Dr. Latt Mansor is a world expert in physiology and metabolism and has spent many years studying the role of ketones in human health. He has consulted with elite sports military clinical and research organizations worldwide. And he is passionate about helping people understand the role that ketones can play in preventing chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. One of the things that Dr. Mansor has found is that ketones can be incredibly beneficial for weight loss. In fact, he has seen average weight losses of 20 pounds in his patients using ketone supplements such as Ketone IQ. He has also found that ketones can help suppress appetite, making losing weight easier. In this podcast, we cover:  What is the difference between exogenous and endogenous ketones? Why do our bodies want to stay in a state of balance Discovering how ketones work in low oxygen environments (hypoxia) The difference between ketone esters and ketone IQ Exogenous vs. endogenous ketones The overall benefits of ketones And so much more. What is the difference between exogenous and endogenous ketones? Endogenous ketones are produced by the body, while exogenous ketones are those that come from an external source.  Exogenous ketones have become popular lately because they can help people lose weight and improve their athletic performance. How ketones help the brain in a low oxygen environment (hypoxia) In our talk with Dr Latt he said, "The original rationale for ketones was that they could be used as an energy source by the brain, bypassing the blood-brain barrier. And what we know of ketone metabolism is that it produces ATP, which is the energy our cells need to function. We wanted to see if ketones could help mitigate cognitive decline in low-oxygen environments. And what we found was that in a group of people given ketones, there was a flattening of the cognitive decline typically seen in hypoxia. This was promising enough for us to run a bigger study looking at different tasks and populations. And while we're still learning more about how ketones affect cognition and oxygen metabolism, so far the results are promising and suggest that ketones could be a valuable tool in protecting cognitive function in low-oxygen environments." This podcast will help you understand more about ketones and their potential to help people in low oxygen environments and their overall benefit on metabolism, aging, cognition and more. Dr Latt's cutting-edge work on ketones is very exciting. You don't want to miss this. Episode Resources: Hvmn.com - use our custom code AHP for 10% offTwitter: @lattmansor Instagram: @lattmansor
