AI, Workplace Culture and Labor Rights: Why human capital risk is financially material This week on The Greener Way, host Michelle Baltazar speaks with Emily DeMasi, regional team lead - North America EOS at Federated Hermes, about why human capital risks, such as workplace culture, harassment and violence, labour rights, and supply chain conditions, are financially material for investors through impacts on productivity, reputation, and long-term returns.DeMasi explains how stewardship engagement assesses human capital using employee surveys, whistleblower mechanisms, and core disclosure metrics such as workforce size (including gig and contract workers), turnover, demographics, and total workforce cost. They discuss AI's double-edged impact, from efficiencies and training needs to job displacement anxiety and potential worker surveillance.00:39 Why human capital matters02:45 Workplace harassment as material risk04:29 Do employee surveys work?05:50 Investor engagement metrics07:55 AI workforce disruption11:13 Case studies13:43 Best practice supply chain frameworks16:18 Why stewardship is crucial17:42 Looking ahead on AI and governanceWe record on Gadigal land and we pay our respects to the traditional custodians of country and elders past and present.https://www.fssustainability.com.au/This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

Endotrachael intubation is a highly important critical care procedure, and as such, clinicians are working to improve the procedure to ensure the best patient outcomes. As Stephanie DeMasi, MD, MS, assistant professor of emergency medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, goes through the detailed review she wrote, along with her colleagues, on different evidence-based decisions clinicians face when intubating a patient, with host Eddie Qian, MD, Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Maryanne Demasi is an independent investigative journalist based in Australia and a former medical scientist with a PhD in rheumatology from the University of Adelaide. For many years, she worked for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and gained wide attention for reporting on controversial medical topics, particularly the efficacy and safety of statins and psychiatric drugs.Demasi was eventually suspended from her position at ABC in 2016 following controversies over her comprehensive and critical examination of statin drugs and other health risks. After leaving ABC, she continued her career as an independent investigative medical journalist. In this interview, we discuss how science can be weaponized and drug data manipulated or suppressed, even for many common drugs prescribed to millions of Americans.“Psychiatry is a classic example of where pharmaceutical companies have been sponsoring their own trials and burying data and then putting a spin on the medical journal, saying that the drug is safe and effective when the fact is, it's not,” she says.“This is not an exception. This happens commonly. Throughout history, pharmaceutical companies have been sued for designing trials [and] hiding, burying data.”Demasi said she has been censored during her career as a journalist and understands the censorship and the pressures faced by journalists and medical professionals who challenge the data and narratives of the powerful pharmaceutical industry.“COVID was the unmasking of how all of this censorship came about,” she said. “It really was an event that woke people up to just how corrupt the system is at every level, from the media to the academia to the agencies that are meant to protect us to the medical journals.”Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.
Dr Maryanne Demasi is an Adelaide-born investigative journalist specialising in medical subjects. Dr Demasi's reporting has earned her an international audience and three National Press Club of Australia prizes for Excellence in Health Journalism.Dr Demasi was one of the first high-profile reporters to draw attention to systemic issues within the modern Australian medical and pharmaceutical industry. Though her efforts in this direction resulted in significant backlash and career hardship, Dr Demasi gained a reputation as a fearless journalist committed to telling the truth despite the cost. This pioneering work meant that when the COVID-19 era hit in 2020, Dr Demasi was well placed to recognise and report on the same pattern of half-truths she had seen in the past.On this episode of BASED, Senator Antic and Dr Demasi discuss the medical industry and its regulation, the dichotomy of old and new media, the response to COVID-19 and the evolution of her career so far.
