The Hazing From Hell, LA Frat Kills Another Student By “Accident” Authorities in Baton Rouge have announced two more arrests in the death of Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old Southern University student who died after being repeatedly punched during an alleged off-campus fraternity hazing ritual. Police said Tuesday that 25-year-old Kyle Thurman and 28-year-old Isaiah Smith have been charged with felony criminal hazing in connection with the fatal incident. Wilson, a junior studying mechanical engineering, died in late February. Last week, investigators arrested 23-year-old Caleb McCray on charges of criminal hazing and manslaughter. Police allege that McCray punched Wilson four times before the pledge collapsed, became unresponsive, and appeared to experience a seizure. Surveillance footage reviewed by law enforcement shows Smith removing Wilson from his vehicle and taking him to a hospital. According to a police arrest warrant affidavit, the group initially told medical staff that Wilson had collapsed while playing basketball at a park, then left before officers arrived. Baton Rouge Police Department Chief Thomas Morse Jr. said Wilson died as a “direct result” of the hazing. Smith, who held the title “Dean of Pledges,” was allegedly in charge of overseeing the ritual. Authorities say he turned himself in on Tuesday. Smith's attorney, Franz Borghardt, emphasized that his client is not accused of making physical contact with Wilson and that no one was aware of any underlying medical conditions the student might have had. “This was a freak accident; we're not talking about force-feeding alcohol,” Borghardt said. “To be sure, everyone in that fraternity cares about Caleb. Our hearts go out to the Wilson family.” While both Smith and Thurman allegedly participated in punching some of the nine pledges, they are not described in police affidavits as having hit Wilson. The hazing took place at a warehouse owned by Smith's father, Todd Smith, who has not responded to requests for comment. Thurman could not be reached, and no information about legal counsel for him was immediately available. Phillip Robinson, McCray's attorney, said his client is innocent and urged the public to refrain from judgment. In Louisiana, hazing can be prosecuted as a felony under the 2018 Max Gruver Act, which carries penalties of up to a $10,000 fine and five years in prison when serious injury or death results. Organizations and educational institutions may also face penalties under the act. Omega Psi Phi, the fraternity Wilson was pledging, could face civil penalties. A spokesperson said the organization is cooperating with authorities. The campus chapter of the fraternity has been suspended, and Greek life organizations at Southern University have been barred from taking on new members for the remainder of the academic year, according to President Dennis Shields. Wilson, a passionate trumpet player in Southern University's renowned band, was honored with a well-attended vigil in early March. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Dennis Shields is the founder of YieldStreet, Esquire Bank, and LawCash. Dennis is also an author, Broadway producer, actor and has appeared on the hit TV show Real House of New York #RHONY We also talk about Bethenny Frankel, Michael Cohen, living in Trump Tower and meeting President Trump. Dennis Shields is the Founder of Esquire Bank, LawCash, and YieldStreet where Ron Suber is an Advisory Board member.  In addition to business, we talk about other topics like his appearance on the hit reality TV show the Real Housewives of New York (RHONY).  We also talk about Bethenny Frankel  and how much he respects her, only nice things to say about Michael Cohen, living in Trump Tower and meeting President Trump. LawCash was started in 2000.  LawCash is a leading provider of pre-settlement funding and litigation financing for plaintiffs and offering assistance when you need it most. He was previously the chairman and founder of HealthShield until its sale in 1999. Esquire Bank is a commercial bank serving professional service firms, law professionals, small to mid-sized businesses, and individuals. Dennis is the founder and chairman of Yield Street one of the largest crowdfunding companies in alternative assets in the United States.   YieldStreet is a platform designed to provide easy access to institutional quality investments.  Investors are connected to accredited investors to asset-based alternative investments with 8-20% target returns.  Whereas borrowers help businesses raise affordable capital quickly by streamlining fundraising and connecting them directly to accredited investors. YieldStreet is changing the way wealth is created, providing access to asset-based investments historically unavailable to most investors. YieldStreet allows you to participate in investment opportunities with low stock market correlation and target yields of 8-20% across litigation finance, real estate, and other alternative asset classes. YieldStreet’s technology platform creates a unique experience for investors at every level and provides valuable diversification and strength to most portfolios. Get started at www.yieldstreet.com. Dennis is also the Chairman of Esquire Payment Systems.  Today litigation business pays out approximately 700 billion per year using an antiquated checking system. However, in the 21st century using checks to pay clients is not efficient or cost effective.  Dennis discusses expanding his distribution of law firms from 42000 to 50000 upon signing two additional deals here in August of 2018.  He plans to help law firms use a debit card payment system so that it provides their clients a greater tool which in turn will save money and provider greater access to cheaper funds at lower prices.  As he puts it the distribution network is being built one lawyer at a time.  This keeps the attorney in contact more with their client. Dennis an author of several books, A Time to Plant Tears has been nominated for best short story Social Life Magazine. He has written other books: The Urgency of Now, God Went Fishing Dennis is also a Broadway producer (Indecent) and currently working on a play (Me Too which he said would come out over the next 6-12 months either on or off Broadway. Dennis was so proud to tell me that he was friends with Brian Koppelman.  Dennis told the audience that Brian discovered Tracy Chapman, wrote Rounders and that everyone should watch Billions the show created by Koppelman. He also mentioned that Brian Koppleman was the writer of Rounders and The Girlfriend Experience)   which Dennis has appeared. Ron Suber says, One of the most important questions we will ever ask ourselves is:  What are you willing to struggle for?" I asked Dennis and he responded To Do Good that he was fortunate and in a position to help people.  He further stated that he was comfortable where he was in business and that he gets satisfaction in helping others. Thinking of his children he was quick to say that he also instills this same philosophy in his children.  I could feel is genuine down to earth nature shining through as he said this and at that moment I was so thankful and grateful to be interviewing such an awesome entrepreneur and mentor to the younger business professionals in the audience. On the subject of time management balance and philanthropy:  he stated that you should focus a certain amount on your family and friends, a certain amount of time to business and certain amount to giving back and not just writing a check but getting other people involved  which he mentioned was doing proper diligence for this year and beyond. On the best advice he ever received "Bad people make for bad business" I will never forget this! I love asking my guest whats your favorite quote: Dennis was on a role I didn't even need to ask him he just blurted out James Altucher -  “When you get in the mud with a pig, you get dirty and the pig gets happy.” At the end of the show, I asked Dennis what are some takeaways I was blown away when he said,  "Thank you I appreciate your giving me all the time, everybody should listen and follow you go to the website listen to your podcast" Dennis's last takeaway: "try to do a nice thing everyday" At the end of the interview, Dennis says let me tell you one more funny story - Bethenny reads all her tweets so Dennis decided to set up a twitter account and was having trouble getting it set up with the passwords and Dennis was amazed at  how Brian Koppelman saw that he set up a twitter account as Twitter notified Dennis that you now have a follower on twitter it was Brian Koppelman who became his first friend on twitter. We joke back and forth at the end of the interview and I say well you will have a lot more after this interviewer.

Wright State’s diversity, research and breadth of academic programs make the university an attractive place to lead, says presidential candidate Cheryl Schrader, chancellor of Missouri University of Science and Technology. “This is the right time to be at Wright State,” she said. “That is because it is an institution that has built up incredible momentum in the past decade and is just poised to move to that next level. That’s where I’ve been at my last three institutions, and I would like to be working together with the people at Wright State in order to do that here.” Schrader is one of three finalists for the Wright State job. The other candidates are Dennis Shields, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Plattville; and Deborah Ford, chancellor of University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Schrader met with students, faculty, staff, administrators and community leaders Feb. 8-9 in forums at the Dayton and Lake campuses. Schrader said her hallmarks are innovation, collaborative research and technology transfer, which are key to moving a university forward. And she said Wright State is well-positioned to expand its connections with nearby science, technology and agriculture-related industries. “In some sense, I felt the fit was right and the future is bright,” she said.

Wright State presidential candidate Deborah Ford says she is attracted to the university because of the diversity of its students and its mission to transform their lives and the communities it serves. And she says academics must be maintained as a priority. “You have a powerful mission,” said Ford, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. “…You have an enormously rich and diverse student body.” Ford is one of three finalists for the Wright State job. The other candidates are Dennis Shields, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Plattville; and Cheryl Schrader, chancellor of Missouri University of Science and Technology. Ford met with students, faculty, staff, administrators and community leaders Feb. 6-7 in forums at the Dayton and Lake campuses. She said she has a passion for higher education and student success. Her goal is to create the best possible learning environment that extends into the community and region. She described her leadership style as collaborative, team-building and engaging, with a focus on excellence and accountability. She said she sets a high bar for herself and those around her – that staff plays a critical role in the success of a university – and that integrity and trust are critically important. “I am going to tell the truth even if it’s bad news,” she said. “…I bring an authenticity. I am who I am.”

Wright State presidential candidate Dennis Shields says he is student-focused, would work to improve outcomes and affordability for students, and would be eager to tackle budget challenges facing the university. Shields, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, is one of three finalists for the Wright State job. He met with students, faculty, staff , administrators, and community leaders Feb. 2-3 in forums at the Dayton and Lake Campus campuses. Shields said Wright State is probably too modest about its successes. “Wright State is a remarkable institution,” he said. “It’s got a great focus on student outcomes. It is a significant contributor to this region. I think that even with some of its challenges, there are ways I can help move the institution forward with the people that we have here.” Founded in 1866, the University of Wisconsin–Platteville sits on 821 acres in southwest Wisconsin. Part of the University of Wisconsin System, the public university has three colleges, offers bachelor's and master's degrees and serves 8,700 students on-campus and another 3,000 students through its five distance education programs. From 2004 to 2013, total enrollment posted a record increase of nearly 40 percent. The school’s mission statement says it promotes excellence by using a personal, hands-on approach to empower students to become broader in perspective, stronger intellectually and ethically, and to contribute to a diverse global community. “I want to be at an institution that is fully committed to the student experience,” said Shields. “I think institutions like Wright State are the portal to the middle class and a thriving life, much more so than the research ones and Ivy Leagues. We’re educating the masses. If we do our job well, then this country is going to thrive.”

AUTHOR - This week our guest is DENNIS SHIELDS. Dennis has enjoyed a storied career in business and finance. He founded a bank, created an industry, represented his country in sport, acted in a major motion picture directed by an Academy Award winning director. His latest book entitled, "God Went Fishing" is a commentary on the vices of 21st century society. Many times the grim aspects of society need to be portrayed in ways that are at once palatable for the reader and aesthetically appealing. Indeed, the author of this new work entertains as he exposes one societal ill after the other. His aim is to bring about self-examination and a desire to improve life in an imperfect world. Although "God Went Fishing" has elements that can spark controversy and debate, the purpose of this book is to ignite thought and dialogue among 21st century readers. While the ever-present battle between good and evil is at the forefront of this book, the author purposefully concludes with the notion that redemption is possible. A definite must read for anyone who loves an intriguing tale with challenges on many levels. WEBSITES: godwentfishing.com
