At the end of the year, media outlets make lots of lists, so many lists that there's even one for best jazz recordings. At the start of the following year, the bastards pick one lucky list to listen through and question every step of the way. This time it's the Times' turn, and Mike is especially skeptical of the paper's first four choices. Pat's just happy things didn't turn out worse. Honestly, these are all good records and who can say which are the "best"? In pop matters, Peter Gabriel gets the boys talking well past closing time.
Here is our seasonal playlist featuring the songs we have loved the most in the past few months. The playlist features Kresten Osgood; Francesco Bearzatti, Stefano Risso, Mattia Barbieri; Mark Lockheart; Luzia von Wyl [pictured], This Is Pan; Patricia Brennan; Mary Halvorson, Amaryllis Sextet; Lucien Johnson; Elin Forkelid; and Miles Okazaki. [VIDEO available on Spotify.] Imagine a vagina. You might be thinking of a passive tube, patiently waiting for a penis to shoot out sperm — and you wouldn't be alone. From Aristotle to Darwin, tons of prominent nerds classified males as the active sexual players: They're coercing, manipulating and harassing to reproduce, while the females are passive, coy, chaste. But animal ecologist Dr. Tiana Pirtle is here to give us the real story. Because once scientists started investigating what really goes on in the vaginas of the animal queendom, they realized that — far from being docile tubes — vaginas are packed with their own weaponry, tools and secret chambers. It turns out that both penises and vaginas were allowed to fight in the evolutionary arms race. Pirtle breaks open a box filled with animal vaginas to tell us all about it. Find our transcript here: https://bit.ly/ScienceVsWhenVaginasAttack In this episode, we cover: (00:00) A Box Full of Vaginas (02:42) The 'Chaste' Female is Born (06:51) The Duck Vagina that Launched a Thousand Ships (11:06) Hyenas and their Pseudo Penises (13:23) Water Striders and their Genital Shields (16:53) Snakes and their Two Vaginas?!

Actualmente Patricia Brennan é investigadora do Mount Holyoke College, en Estado Unidos. Nabil Ayers has been part of the music scene in many capacities: musician, record-label creator, band manager, music executive, and founder of Seattle's Sonic Boom Records. He is also an author, writing about music and race for the New York Times, Rolling Stone, and many others. Now Ayers has written a new memoir, My Life in the Sunshine: Searching for My Father and Discovering My Family, about his relationship with his father, Black jazz musician Roy Ayers; being a mixed-race person in the United States; and his work in the music industry. While Ayers' famous musician father was rarely present in his life, he still turned out to be a strong influence, showing up in Ayers' love of music and his eclectic career in the music industry. Motivated by his father's absence, Ayers researched and connected with other extended family members and discovered the existence of several half-siblings, as well as a paternal ancestor who was enslaved. Following these new family connections, Nabil meets and befriends the descendant of the plantation owner, which strangely paves the way for him to make meaningful connections with other extended family he never knew existed. In conversation with KEXP's Cheryl Waters, Ayers discusses his drive to understand his roots and redraw the lines that define family and race. Nabil Ayers has written about race and music for The New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and GQ. Ayers is the President of Beggars Group US, where he has run campaigns for The National, Big Thief, Grimes, Future Islands and St. Vincent, as well as reissue campaigns including Pixies' album Doolittle which was certified Platinum in 2019. At age 25, Ayers and his business partner opened Seattle's Sonic Boom Records store, which they sold to a longtime customer in 2016. As a drummer Ayers has performed in several bands including The Long Winters and Tommy Stinson. On his own record label, The Control Group/Valley of Search, Ayers has released music by Cate Le Bon, Lykke Li, The Killers, PJ Harvey, Patricia Brennan, and his uncle, the jazz musician Alan Braufman. Ayers lives with his wife in Brooklyn, NY. For more than 25 years, radio DJ and producer Cheryl Waters has been enriching people's lives through artist advocacy and music discovery at the influential Seattle radio station KEXP. A lifelong music lover, Cheryl's career in radio began in 1994 as a volunteer DJ at the station, then-known as KCMU, while she was working as an environmental scientist.
Zoologist Lucy Cooke is on a mission: to break down the 'sexist stereotype' she believes has permeated our understanding of the natural world. In Political Animals, she sets out to prove that females of the species can be just as fiesty, ardent, manipulative, aggressive, strategic, varied and political as males - questioning some of the theories laid out by the 'father of evolution', Charles Darwin, and hearing from pioneering scientists moving evolutionary biology beyond a male-centric narrative. In this second instalment, Lucy explores ways in which female animals wield authority; with examples ranging from repressive mole-rat queens to ducks with deceptive vaginas, all proving that power can be about more than physical strength. This involves a visit to the UK's only colony of naked mole-rats, overseen by Chris Faulkes at the University of London's Queen Mary College; an introduction to the world of labyrinthine animal vaginas and their evolutionary benefits with Patricia Brennan from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts; and assisting with feeding time at Twycross Zoo's bonobo enclosure, as Amanda Addison and Becca Biddle explain the power of the ape sisterhood... Meanwhile Joe Cain from University College London sheds more light on Darwin's attitude towards females. Featuring excerpts from ‘The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex' and personal notes written by Charles Darwin, read by Derek Frood. Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Lucy Taylor. First broadcast on Friday 25 February 2022.
