Today, we are continuing our series, entitled Developer Chats - hearing from the large scale system builders themselves. In this episode, we are talking with Oleksandr Piekhota, Principal Software Engineer at Teaching Strategies. Oleksandr helps to show us at what point of scale platform approaches are required, when to run experiments and when to stop, and perhaps more importantly - engineering ownership beyond the code.QuestionsYou've moved from hands-on engineering into principal and technical leadership roles, working on architecture and platforms. At what point did you realize your work was no longer about individual features, but about the system as a wholeAcross several projects, growth didn't break functionality — it exposed architectural limits. Can you recall a moment when it became clear that shipping more features wouldn't solve the problem, and a platform approach was required? You've designed and supported APIs end-to-end, from architecture to real customers. How do you distinguish between an API that simply works and one that can truly support business scale?Internal systems like invoicing and HR workflows began as automation, but evolved into real products. What tells you that an internal tool is worth developing seriously rather than treating as a temporary workaround? In R&D, you explored CI/CD automation, server-less, and infrastructure experiments — not all reached production. How do you decide when an experiment should continue, and when it's no longer worth the engineering cost? You've hired teams, set standards, and shaped long-term technical direction. At what point does an engineer stop being a contributor and start owning business-level outcomes? You contributed to open-source tools that later became part of your company's infrastructure. Why do you see open source contributions as part of serious engineering work rather than a side activity?Looking across your projects, how do you now recognize a truly mature engineering system? Is it code quality, process, or how teams respond when things go wrong? If we look five to seven years into the future, which architectural assumptions we treat as “standard” today are most likely to turn out to be naive or limiting?SponsorsIncogniLinkshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/oleksandr-piekhota-b675ba53/https://teachingstrategies.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/codestory/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Suzi speaks to Ukrainian socialist Oleksandr Kyselov, who says the current “peace process” is a dangerous illusion. Russia's goal, he argues, is not compromise but subjugation — and any ceasefire that doesn't confront that reality only postpones the next war. We discuss the Witkoff-Dmitriev 28-point plan (critics call it the “DimWit plan”), exhaustion inside Ukraine, and why calls from the Western left for immediate, unconditional ceasefire, without a single protest outside a Russian embassy, are, as Kyselov puts it, “beyond naive.” Ksenia Kagarlitskaya then joins us from her exile in Montenegro. Her father, Marxist sociologist Boris Kagarlitsky, has now spent two years in Penal Colony No. 4 for opposing Putin's war. She discusses her father's imprisonment and the explosion of political prisoners inside Russia since 2022. Ksenia runs Freedom Zone, an organization that raises funds and organizes events globally to support political prisoners and their families. Ksenia reminds us that political prisoners don't appear in any of the current peace negotiations, because Russia doesn't acknowledge that they exist. Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements.

What does it take to stay mentally steady when the ground keeps shifting—war outside, uncertainty inside, and leadership still expected? In Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, hosted by Yusuf, Ukrainian founder Oleksandr “Alex” Buratynskyishares what resilience looks like when survival and startups collide. This episode is for founders, leaders, and anyone living through instability who's tired of the “push through alone” story. Alex reframes resilience as a system—built through community, shared leadership, and clear priorities—so your strength doesn't depend on one exhausted mind. About the Guest: Oleksandr “Alex” Buratynskyi is the Founder & CEO of T-Travel, a travel app built from Ukraine. He has 10+ years in tech and is the author of Systematic Adaptiveness, inspired by the resilience of the Ukrainian people. Episode Chapters: 00:02:50 — What it takes to stay mentally steady when life keeps shifting 00:05:25 — “I've lived multiple lives”: growing up through cycles of instability 00:08:21 — From avoiding the dark to holding the full picture with awareness 00:11:54 — The biggest misunderstanding about resilience: doing it alone 00:12:55 — Resilience as diversification: friends, mentors, coaches, support systems 00:18:41 — What “Systematic Adaptiveness” really means in life and leadership 00:25:43 — Where to find Alex's work and how T-Travel helps travelers earn Key Takeaways: Stop treating resilience like solo endurance—build “buckets” of support (friends, mentors, coaches). Practice seeing the whole picture without aggression: ask “what's the source of this problem?” Lead like a system: let expertise rotate—different people lead at different moments. Anchor the team to a shared “North Star” so everyone knows why the work matters. Drop ego-driven leadership; prioritize the greater good of the group to adapt faster. Suzi talks to Oleksandr Kyselov and Alyssa Oursler about what's being sold to the world as “peace” in Ukraine, and what it looks like from the standpoint of Ukrainians who are actually living through the war. Trump's 28-point plan for Ukraine — drafted behind closed doors by his real estate ally Steve Witkoff and a Russian sovereign wealth fund chief — reads less like diplomacy and more like a property deal: Russia gets the land, the US takes its cut, Europe foots the bill, and Ukraine is told to choose between surrendering now or surrendering later — with little input in the process. Ukrainian political analyst Oleksandr Kyselov argues that what's on the table is not a just peace but an “imperial carve-up,” and that Ukrainians are forced to fight for “the least unjust peace” that can realistically be won today. Then journalist Alyssa Oursler, reporting from Kyiv, describes how Ukrainians are reacting to the plan — from sudden funerals to conversations with leftists and soldiers who say Trump has prolonged the war and treated Ukraine as a bargaining chip. Fertile soil is something Ukraine has always been known for. But wind and water erosion are causing a soil loss of approximately 15 tons per hectare every year. Today we're joined by Oleksandr, a farmer in the Kiev Region of Ukraine, and Syngenta's Valeriy Dubrovin to discuss how farmers are advancing regenerative practices even in this current challenging time for the country. “ In the Ukraine, with the (most fertile) soils in the world, this topic should be number one in agriculture to keep our soil health to give these soils for (future) generations.” - Valeriy Dubrovin This is a fascinating discussion about how they're using practices and technology to improve soil health. Oleksandr farms about three thousand hectares in the Kiev region of Ukraine. He grows sunflower, corn, barley, wheat, beans, sugarbeet and quite a bit of livestock on his operation. He's been farming since 1995 and has implemented reduced tillage practices and incorporated manure on his operation to try to fight erosion and improve his soil health. And also joining us is Valeriy Dubrovin. Valeriy is the soil health and carbon farming manager at Syngenta located in Ukraine. He's been with the company 11 years now and his role is to improve services and perform training for farmers like Oleksandr on soil health. And one really cool program he's working on uses INTERRA© Scan Technology. Valeriy and Oleksandr also speak candidly about what's happening in Ukraine today and what it has been like to try to farm and build healthier soils during such a challenging time for the country. They join us via an interpreter, Kseniia. This Week on Soil Sense: Meet Oleksandr, a large-scale farmer in UkraineDiscover some of the soil health challenges in the Ukraine, and what farmers are doing to deal with thoseHear how tools like INTERRA© Scan Technology are helping farmers improve soil healthUnderstand how farmers and their advisors are continuing to operate their farms and build their soil health during extremely difficult times for the countryListen to the full season here: https://www.syngenta.com/agriculture/sustainable-agriculture/soil-health/soil-sense-podcast This season of the Soil Sense podcast is brought to you by Syngenta. A few days earlier on 28th February, the world witnessed an unbelievable spectacle in the Oval Office. Ukraine's President Vlodomyr Zelenskyy was on the receiving end of a bizarre temper tantrum from Mr. Trump and his vice president JD Vance. Fortunately, the suspension was soon lifted, but Mr. Trump's actions provoked some serious questions.Ukraine has benefitted from supplies of US Electronic Warfare (EW) kit and expertise. Ukraine's allies must be able to step up to quickly fill any void, in terms of EW assistance, left by Uncle Sam's isolationism. At the same time, European allies must continue enhancing their defences against Mr. Putin's regime. How can US EW capabilities be substituted for Ukraine? World War II as an Identity Project (Ibidem, 2022) explores the relationship between history, legitimacy, and violence in the building and breaking of nations and states on the territory of contemporary Ukraine during the Second World War and in its aftermath. At its center are various institutions of the Soviet state. Other states and rival political movements also enter the picture insofar as their acitivities influenced Soviet policies. Methodologically, the study shifts attention from a limited body of normative texts and their creators within the Soviet political and cultural elite to a wider array of practices, organizations, and players engaged in power struggles and production of knowledge about the past in different social domains. Specifically, it brings into focus groups not normally thought of as participants in the production of Soviet memory discourse, notably NKVD officers, Soviet archivists, Ukrainian nationalists, Nazi collaborators, and former partisans in the German-occupied territories. The book not only demonstrates the complexity of nation-shaping processes, but also restores agency to some seemingly powerless actors. Learn more about your ad choices. Oleksandr Prokhorov is a Lviv, Ukraine-based chess organizer, trainer, FIDE arbiter and Twitch streamer. Ukraine has a rich chess history and has a vibrant grass roots scene in addition to famous natives such as Vasyl Ivanchuk, the Muzychuk sisters, and GM Ruslan Ponomariov. In recent years, I have marvelled at the persistent passion for chess in Ukraine  as I follow Facebook groups like the Love Chess Ukraine Facebook Group. Oleksandr and I discussed:  Is interest in Ukrainian chess as strong as ever despite the war? Is there still state funding for chess-related activities?  What challenges are presented by the fact that many of its top Ukrainian players are moving abroad in order to be able to compete internationally?  We also discussed a few notable Ukrainians who have been on the front lines, Oleksandr's favorite books and content creators, and what Oleksandr and his colleagues are doing to help the next generation of Ukrainian players. Hearing about the resilience of the Ukrainian people, and their continued passion for chess inspires admiration and respect. Multiple panels consisting of the best experts, and all filmed in high definition for the channel. https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extras But it costs. Last time the overall cost was £3,500 for Live in Lviv, and we covered 80% of this through ticket sales. This is the second instalment of our full-length in-depth discussion. A fan favourite at Arsenal and previously Manchester City, Oleksandr Zinchenko has been lighting up the Premier League with his fearless performances for many years. But his success has come while facing immense challenges. Having begun his career as a teenager at Shakhtar Donetsk, on the border with Russia, he was acutely aware of the politics of sport. Initially he played football as an amateur because no club would sign him. But he fought his way to the top and joined Manchester City in 2016 where he would go on to experience exhilarating career highs, with four league titles in six years, before moving to Arsenal where he has played an integral part in their recent successes. Zinchenko has shown his intense commitment in a very different way through his campaigning in support of his homeland during the ongoing war. Following advice from loved ones, he aimed to make a difference by using his platform to spread awareness and raise money to support his country. In October 2024 Zinchenko came to Intelligence Squared to tell his remarkable story. Drawing from his new autobiography Believe he provided unique insights into the methods of Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta and the machinations of elite football. He also told the story of how he has sought to support Ukraine on and off the pitch. Joining him to discuss it at our recent Intelligence Squared live event recorded on October 23rd at London's Emmanuel Centre was Amy Lawrence, Arsenal correspondent for The Athletic and author of 89: Arsenal's Greatest Moment, Told in Our Own Words.
