Experts say climate change is increasing the risk of a “double disaster” — a large-scale chemical spill caused by extreme weather. Massachusetts is especially vulnerable, as a coastal state with industrial ports. WBUR's senior investigative reporter Patrick Madden took a closer look at this risk in New Bedford, a city with a high concentration of warehouses that use chemicals for cold storage in the fishing industry. Patrick Madden and Joey Franklin are English professors at Brigham Young University. Madden's latest book is Disparates (U Nebraska Press, 2020) and Franklin's is The Writer's Hustle: A Professional Guide to the Creativity, Discipline, Humility, and Grit Every Writer Needs to Flourish (Bloomsbury, 2022). They serve as co-editors-in-chief of Fourth Genre. Two guest voices in this episode means twice the fun, as Patrick Madden and Joey Franklin reinforce as well as diverge somewhat in their essay preferences. Madden is more in the Montaigne reflection vein, whereas Franklin admits he can prefer a narrative-driven memoir approach. Together, we worked our way through three essays from a recent issue of Fourth Genre, one of three magazines that spearheaded a renewed appreciation for the essay form beginning a quarter of a century ago. Both editors enjoyed the surprises that bubble up in Peggy Shinner's essay, “The Rest Is History,” which explores the conflation of female sexuality and nuclear testing during World War Two and on Bikini Atoll subsequently. Kabi Hartman's essay “Nipple Day” visits and revisits the circumstances surrounding her own father's leering behavior, trying to make sense of it all. Finally, on a quieter note is “Garden Hunter” by Joanne Hartman, where the beauty of nature contrasts with parents falling apart physically and between themselves prior to their ultimate deaths. Several months overdue, but here's my Season 4 finale as Patrick Madden and I recap the year that was in Big East basketball!
Louisiana is home to the country's largest hotspot for toxic air — an industrial corridor nicknamed “Cancer Alley.” More than 150 petrochemical plants line the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Amid the boom, many Black communities live with a disproportionate amount of pollution. But years of protest have begun to bear fruit. We travel the Mississippi River to learn what has allowed the industry to flourish on its banks, see how the tide might turn in one neighborhood's fight for clean air, and ask what's next for a growing environmental justice movement as federal regulators take firmer action. Find more information on local activists' tug of war with Denka Performance Elastomers and other environmental justice updates here. To hear a reflection from Louisiana's former Department of Environmental Quality Secretary, Chuck Carr Brown, listen here. Explore how the EPA is looking at environmental justice, their pending civil rights investigations and their updates on Denka and air monitoring at these links. Find a copy of the EPA's letter of concern to Louisiana's Department of Health and Department of Environmental Quality here. You can find Denka Performance Elastomers website here. A special thanks to members of the Concerned Citizens of St. John Robert Taylor, Mary Hampton, and Larry Soraporu for being so generous with their time. Find their group here. Hosted by Halle Parker and Kezia Setyawan. Our managing producer is Carlyle Calhoun. Editing help was provided by Carlyle Calhoun, Rosemary Westwood Priska Neely, Patrick Madden, and Eve Abrams. Our sound designer is Maddie Zampanti. Sea Change is a production of WWNO and WRKF. We are part of the NPR Podcast Network and distributed by PRX.

We love shrimp in the United States. As a country, we eat over 2 billion pounds a year, making it the most consumed seafood in the country. So times should be really good for shrimpers, right? But shrimpers say things have never been worse and that their whole industry here in the United States is on the brink of extinction. This narrative episode goes on a journey from the fishing docks to shrimping in the bayous exploring land loss, climate change, and other issues endangering the future of the Gulf shrimp industry. We also uncover the threats imported shrimp pose to a way of life and human health. Hosted by Carlyle Calhoun and Halle Parker. Organizers of the Mayor Cantrell recall in New Orleans are pushing for more signatures before the February 22 deadline to bring the question to the ballot. The Times-Picayune | The Advocate's editorial director and columnist Stephanie Grace tells us what to expect as the deadline fast approaches. With loud noises, tightly-packed crowds, and objects flying left and right – a Mardi Gras parade might not seem like the friendliest space for people with disabilities. Thankfully, there are some krewes that are specifically focused on finding ways to make their floats and parades accessible for riders with disabilities. Now through February 24 at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center in Baton Rouge is “Preserving Our Place– A Photographic Exhibition.” This display offers visual art from native communities in coastal south Louisiana and coastal far-west Alaska, attesting to the similarities in the climate crises in the artists' native homes. For more, WRKF's Adam Vos spoke with the artists Chantel Comardelle, tribal executive secretary of the Jean Charles Choctaw Nation and co-creator of the exhibit, and Dennis Davis, community artist of the native Inupiaq village of Shishmaref, Alaska. In 2020, Mardi Gras was the launching point for a surge in COVID-19 cases throughout the Gulf South. And this year – there's more in the air, like flu and RSV. Gulf States Newsroom reporter Shalina Chatlani spoke with health officials about what to expect this year and how to stay safe. But first, it's Friday and that means it's time for an update on this week in politics. In the last few years New Orleans has seen an explosion in the variety of King Cakes one can buy. From Dong Phuong's Vietnamese style of the desert, to Norma's Sweets Bakery's Cuban approach with a guava filling, King Cakes are increasingly taking on new cultural identities. Last weekend, Louisiana Considered's Alana Schreiber visited The Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience and spoke with New Orleanian and baker Serena Deutch, to learn about a new kind of King Cake with a Jewish spin. And while we're on the subject of King Cakes, just recently New Orleans author Matt Haines released a new book, The Little Book of King Cake. Back in 2021 he published the Big Book of King Cake, a coffee table book detailing the origin story behind this carnival dessert. He joins us for more on how his original book led to his new one for children. But first, it's been a busy week in politics, and that means it's time to catch up with The Times-Picayune | The Advocate's editorial director and columnist, Stephanie Grace. Today we discuss potential candidates for the Louisiana 2023 governor's race. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Patrick Madden. New Orleans is once again gearing up to overhaul its laws governing short-term rentals, like those listed on platforms like Airbnb. And City Hall is under a fast-approaching deadline to pass new rules, set by a federal court. WWNO's New Orleans reporter Carly Berlin tells us what changes might be in store for the city's short-term-rental industry. This Saturday, New Orleans will host the 2023 Miss Universe pageant where representatives from 165 countries will take to the runway to compete for the crown. But last month in Las Vegas, a different kind of pageant just wrapped up. One where the runway is replaced by a stable, and the crown, replaced by a cowgirl hat. Louisiana Considered's Alana Schreiber spoke with Miss Rodeo Louisiana 2022, Sydney Albritton, about her recent competition in Vegas, and what it takes to be a rodeo queen. Each week, American Routes brings you Shortcuts, a sneak peek at the upcoming show. A push from Republican state officials could specifically dilute the voting power of Black people by changing who counts as Black in voting maps. This would further gut the increasingly fragile Voting Rights Act. Hansi Lo Wang covers voting for NPR and he reported this story for the podcast, Code Switch. He joins us for more on the impacts of tightening legal definitions of race. Across the country, and especially in Louisiana, we are already seeing migration due to climate change. But rather than relocate further from the rising waters of Lake Pontchartrain , residents of Mandeville are simply building their homes higher, making them more flood resistant. NPR's Amy Scott of Marketplace has the story. But first, with the US House of Representatives in a stalemate in electing a Speaker of the House, some eyes are turning from California's Kevin McCarthy to Louisiana's Steve Scalise. The Times-Picayune | The Advocate's editorial director and columnist Stephanie Grace joins us for more. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Patrick Madden.
