Josh Scandlen is a Financial Planner and founder of Heritage Wealth Planning a comprehensive financial planning firm located in Georgia. In March of 2018, Josh left USAA after working there for 10 years then worked for a few smaller companies and early this year left being a w-2 employee to start his own financial planning firm and has a successful youtube channel helping people with tax planning, retirement planning, estate planning, and everything finance. He started his financial services career at Vanguard in the late 90's. Although Josh does not manage money any money he still registered as an investment advisor which is an extra cost and can to some be a regulatory hurdle that others would not want to go through. With four kids and his wife at home, how was he going to pay the bills to find the extra money while building up his business? In starting a business you must have money to start up a business and he used a distribution in his 401(k) and paid the 10% penalty. Has always engaged with the public with doing seminars and tried to demystify the financial planning, estate planning experience. He had an epiphany why do seminars in front of 15 locally when he can do youtube videos in front of potentially thousands and now gets a lot of clients directly from doing his youtube channel. Josh says the top three things the people, couples make is not understanding the tax code. He says that investment management is not financial planning. If married filing jointly just don't plan for today but think about the tax bomb in your retirement plan. He says you will not always be married filing jointly. You must think about Medicare premiums tax on social security vs did I beat the market? Not having a durable power of attorney it survives incapacity so a big qualified plan your individual plan and spouse no right to it so if your spouse needs access court order vs durability of power of attorney. Don't focus so much on active investment management use Jack Bogle Vanguard philosophy. Josh recommends a financial planning tool called Maximize My Social Security founder Laurence Kotlikoff Professor of Economics, Boston University and President of Economic Security Planning, Inc. This resource only costs individuals or families $40 bucks per year. Trump's executive order on Required Minimum Distributions for all retirement assets. Increase tables for RMD's at 70 1/2 you are forced to take out an amount divided by 27.4. Maybe what should be done is a redo of these tables so instead push them back to 75 as people are living longer and maybe increase what you divide. Deferring taxes is not eliminating taxes so at some point someone is going to pay it merely kicking the can down the road. Josh has written several books that you should check out:

Dennis Shields is the Founder of Esquire Bank, LawCash, and YieldStreet where Ron Suber is an Advisory Board member. In addition to business, we talk about other topics like his appearance on the hit reality TV show the Real Housewives of New York (RHONY). We also talk about Bethenny Frankel and how much he respects her, only nice things to say about Michael Cohen, living in Trump Tower and meeting President Trump. LawCash was started in 2000. LawCash is a leading provider of pre-settlement funding and litigation financing for plaintiffs and offering assistance when you need it most. He was previously the chairman and founder of HealthShield until its sale in 1999. Esquire Bank is a commercial bank serving professional service firms, law professionals, small to mid-sized businesses, and individuals. Dennis is the founder and chairman of Yield Street one of the largest crowdfunding companies in alternative assets in the United States. YieldStreet is a platform designed to provide easy access to institutional quality investments. Investors are connected to accredited investors to asset-based alternative investments with 8-20% target returns. Whereas borrowers help businesses raise affordable capital quickly by streamlining fundraising and connecting them directly to accredited investors. YieldStreet is changing the way wealth is created, providing access to asset-based investments historically unavailable to most investors. YieldStreet allows you to participate in investment opportunities with low stock market correlation and target yields of 8-20% across litigation finance, real estate, and other alternative asset classes. YieldStreet’s technology platform creates a unique experience for investors at every level and provides valuable diversification and strength to most portfolios. Get started at www.yieldstreet.com. Dennis is also the Chairman of Esquire Payment Systems. Today litigation business pays out approximately 700 billion per year using an antiquated checking system. However, in the 21st century using checks to pay clients is not efficient or cost effective. Dennis discusses expanding his distribution of law firms from 42000 to 50000 upon signing two additional deals here in August of 2018. He plans to help law firms use a debit card payment system so that it provides their clients a greater tool which in turn will save money and provider greater access to cheaper funds at lower prices. As he puts it the distribution network is being built one lawyer at a time. This keeps the attorney in contact more with their client. Dennis an author of several books, A Time to Plant Tears has been nominated for best short story Social Life Magazine. He has written other books: The Urgency of Now, God Went Fishing Dennis is also a Broadway producer (Indecent) and currently working on a play (Me Too which he said would come out over the next 6-12 months either on or off Broadway. Dennis was so proud to tell me that he was friends with Brian Koppelman. Dennis told the audience that Brian discovered Tracy Chapman, wrote Rounders and that everyone should watch Billions the show created by Koppelman. He also mentioned that Brian Koppleman was the writer of Rounders and The Girlfriend Experience) which Dennis has appeared. Ron Suber says, One of the most important questions we will ever ask ourselves is: What are you willing to struggle for?" I asked Dennis and he responded To Do Good that he was fortunate and in a position to help people. He further stated that he was comfortable where he was in business and that he gets satisfaction in helping others. Thinking of his children he was quick to say that he also instills this same philosophy in his children. I could feel is genuine down to earth nature shining through as he said this and at that moment I was so thankful and grateful to be interviewing such an awesome entrepreneur and mentor to the younger business professionals in the audience. On the subject of time management balance and philanthropy: he stated that you should focus a certain amount on your family and friends, a certain amount of time to business and certain amount to giving back and not just writing a check but getting other people involved which he mentioned was doing proper diligence for this year and beyond. On the best advice he ever received "Bad people make for bad business" I will never forget this! I love asking my guest whats your favorite quote: Dennis was on a role I didn't even need to ask him he just blurted out James Altucher - “When you get in the mud with a pig, you get dirty and the pig gets happy.” At the end of the show, I asked Dennis what are some takeaways I was blown away when he said, "Thank you I appreciate your giving me all the time, everybody should listen and follow you go to the website listen to your podcast" Dennis's last takeaway: "try to do a nice thing everyday" At the end of the interview, Dennis says let me tell you one more funny story - Bethenny reads all her tweets so Dennis decided to set up a twitter account and was having trouble getting it set up with the passwords and Dennis was amazed at how Brian Koppelman saw that he set up a twitter account as Twitter notified Dennis that you now have a follower on twitter it was Brian Koppelman who became his first friend on twitter. We joke back and forth at the end of the interview and I say well you will have a lot more after this interviewer.

Mandeep Sodhi is the founder and CEO of Sydney Australia Fintech Startup Hashching Online Proptech Home Loan Marketplace. We talk with Mandeep about how he came up with this practical idea based on a pain point he personally felt in his own personal life and how he has been able to execute on that idea over the last three years. Check out Hashchings equity crowdfunding going on until June 15, 2018, via https://equitise.com/hashching The company has built a network of over 600 independent mortgage brokers to pre negotiating special rates with over 60 individual lenders to the back office technology that makes it all work. We speak to Mandeep about how he built his team which provides excellent support and service! Mandeep was named one of the coolest 100 people in Australian tech back in 2016 emerging star list in the annual Fintech list by Business Insider AU In August 2014, he decided to buy his first home. As a loyal bank employee, he reached out for the staff discount. At the time, he would boast to his friends about the special discounts he was entitled to as an employee of the bank. A few days later he found out from his friend that they had secured a better rate from the bank that Mandeep worked for. He asked himself the question how come his friend got a better rate? The bank simply replied, ‘Because your friend used a mortgage broker.’ Their answer made me even more frustrated, so I started to look at the mortgage broker model in greater detail. From his research, he could see how much value mortgage advisers were providing their customers. Not only were they saving customers more time by taking away the hassle of completing documentation etc. brokers were securing better rates. launch: August 2015 what: online marketplace connecting borrowers to local mortgage brokers. Describe: a pure Fintech play - like: operating an Uber style model where consumers are connected to a mortgage broker who comes direct to their home. - online mortgage marketplace that shows and compares deals posted by mortgage brokers, rather than the lending institutions themselves. The current pool represents more than What: Australia's first online marketplace allowing consumers to access home loan deals without having to shop around. Former banker Sodhi found they had home loans from the same bank but each got a different deal. Hashching provides a more consumer-friendly and more efficient mortgage broking market. Their goal is to eliminate friction faced by so many customers that deal with the home loan settlement process Haschings value proposition: bypass the big banks get a better home loan deal Distribution Network - how do you sign up 60 lenders, including the big four banks. And over 600 brokers Fairly labor intensive Model Bank lender officers vs brokers Backed by VC firms H2 Ventures (January 2015 ), Picus Capital, and Sapien Ventures, Raising money: The company scored $1 million in funding from Sapien Ventures (Victor Jiang) Pivot - You joined H2 Ventures in January 2015, initially, you were going to work with the banks. - We approached four of the banks who basically said; We are happy to work with you guys, but our advisers are only available from Monday to Friday during operating hours only. We do not call clients on Saturday and Sunday or nights. Consumers need the convenience of a broker coming to their house on the weekend. So, we quickly pivoted the model to service mortgage brokers. More than 50 percent of loans are written by mortgage brokers so we had a huge market to target. Technology Talk Hasching tools? He was founder and president of the Omaha Wool and Storage Company and founder of banks transportation companies and promoter of various enterprises. He had come far born in Pennsylvania on March 13, 1853, in Bradford County. When in Chadron NE he started a general store known as C.H. King's Mercantile. He was described in his day as being shrewd a true businessman, as a business person why study CH make him one of your own case studies well he was a visionary what today we might say a mover and shaker. He was a visionary -> he saw what others could not as he anticipated the arrival of the Chicago and North Western Railroad network into Chadron and the nearby Wyoming territory. He was constantly thinking of how he could expand his commercial enterprises. He executed on this opportunity by stringing together general stores, lumberyards' banks, wool trading companies, a freight hauling business, and much real estate strategically located where the railroad access insured the founding of future towns and cities in addition to Chadron. By July 25, 1886, Chadron was much in the infancy as an organized community -> it was at this time that President Gerald Ford's biological father Leslie Lynch was born to Charles Henry King and his wife Martha in the town of Chadron Our Fast Pitch sponsored by trustsmarter.com Trusts find trust co info on estate planning Book -> MitchellChadrow.com/books Robert Roy Foresman left a message that he was working on a full-length article and publication on Fannie O'Linn. He said it was nice to see the post about her and podcast he said that he has been researching her for over 10 years, and there is a lot of stories to still share. I’m going to link to robs other books and when his article and book on Fannie O’Linn published will him on in the meantime I provide a link to him here. He Works for the North Dakota State University northern plains ethics institute Even before Wyoming became a state in 1890 CH would become well known as one of the wealthiest men in Wyoming, At one time he amassed a fortune of $20 million in today’s dollars that is considerable but in 1890 it was huge. By 1900 C.H. King was known as a baron among wool traders and a merchant king in western Nebraska the panhandle As I stated earlier he was an entrepreneurs entrepreneur he was ambitious and eager to seize new opportunities, by 1905 he was moving his business HQs to Omaha. Omaha was known as the eastern terminal of the Union Pacific Railroad, and it also had numerous other roads so it became Omaha's western terminal. CH saw Omaha as a city with a great future. His reputation was both energetic but an honest businessman. As startups, business owners, and entrepreneurs we focus so much on wanting to raise or borrow money for our businesses. CH found it relatively easy to raise large sums of capital for new profitable ventures. For example, In 1908, he had a capital fund of $100,000, and the Omaha Wool and Storage Company was founded with C.H. King as president. His son, Leslie, Sr., also owned stock in the company and was named general manager. This was considered a big business for that time having a huge warehouse, 1200 feet long by 150 feet high, it was totally covered with a corrugated iron roof, and we know real estate is location location location CH was sure that the Union Pacific ran a side track up to the Omaha Wool and Storage Co. loading dock. By 1909 wool was being shipped into Omaha from western Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and South Dakota. Charles Henry was what we call today a serial entrepreneur he was driven to create more successful commercial companies/firms: C.H. King Company - > dealt in wholesale food merchandising. He was known in Omaha as a premier businessmen he entertained big time at Woolworth Mansion a real luxurious home with its ornately decorated ballroom The C.H. King Company and First National Bank Building, also known as Yellowstone Drug, is one of the oldest buildings in Shoshoni, Wyoming. The building was built for Charles Henry King in 1905–1906. King was a central Wyoming businessman who established a lumber business in the building. King is otherwise notable as the biological grandfather of U.S. president Gerald R. Ford. The First National Bank of Shoshoni was also located in the building Our wrap up round sponsored by startupssmarter.com You need help starting up a business from forms to set up your business to getting online with a website my listeners who go over to startupssmarter.com/Mitchell signup will get a free one-page website By signing up get guides articles and information President Ford's biological parents: Leslie Lynch King, Sr. and Dorothy Ayer Gardner marry in Harvard, Illinois. However, The marriage of Dorothy and Leslie, Sr. lasted only about five months longer. On December 19, 1913, Dorothy obtained a divorce from her husband on the grounds of "extreme cruelty" and was given "sole custody" of their an only child, Leslie, Jr. While Ford's biological father was granted visitation rights Leslie, King Sr. was also ordered by the court to pay alimony attorney fees; and child support Leslie, Jr. or Ford attained his majority at age twenty-one game I will be doing an upcoming show on president Gerald Ford and I will explore several deeper personal questions not covered in this podcast How did all this impact CH in business -> Tremendously! I found myself asking - > Why would such a successful driven gregarious prominent businessman decide to just pick up and leave Omaha at a time when he was at the top of his business game Was it his personal life this tangled tale of President Gerald Fords biological parents divorce which by the way didn’t merely end with a judicial judgment of divorce alimony and child support payment decree. Charles Henry King was a maverick in business but his personal issues due to his son the president's biological father had a tremendous impact on his business these family issues caused CH to become sidetracked that story is so powerful - I will explore all of this on an upcoming show about President Gerald Ford.
Fannie O’Linn Chadron Nebraska Dawes County Northwestern Panhandle Founder Attorney Teacher Show 062 Chadron The Northwestern Nebraska Panhandle town founded by Frances Maria Brainard O'Linn Show 062 I'm Mitchell Chadrow and this is the Listen Up Show Podcast Fanny was not only the founder of a town she was a noteworthy pioneer for settling the west, a school teacher, a postmaster, the fifth woman admitted to the Bar in Nebraska, a community builder and most of all a hero that should be studied by all in business and life. -> What are we going to learn today? -> What Legacy did Fanny Leave and how can her lessons apply to your everyday business and life? -> Why do an entire podcast on Fanny? ;After doing research on her story I was shocked that even people in the town of Chadron know little about her let alone Nebraskians especially how her story applies to business I started asking myself why has this most amazing woman somehow been placed on the back seat of history - maybe until now there has been no one to be her voice or maybe she has no relatives or family to tell her story. It really seemed unfair because she should at least be on a short list of notable Nebraska women. Tome, she really seemed to have been unforgotten but I’m changing all that now I mean we all have heard of William Jennings Bryan the orator and Nebraska politician read and heard stories of the Travelings of Lewis and Clark Know about The Showmanship of William F. Cody and of course the Notoriety of Charlie Starkweather. However, it’s not every day that a woman in the In the 1880’s helps start up a town. builds a community of people in the heartland of America becomes a pioneer settling the west, is the fifth woman to become an attorney in Nebraska and the 11th registered with the US Supreme Court - she was a postmaster, a mid wife, a school teacher, and so much more She was born back on April 13, 1848 in a small town called Magnolia the county seat of Harrison County Iowa, Fanny graduated at the University State University of Iowa in Iowa City as valedictorian and youngest member of the class' at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. She became a teacher at Magnolia High School and then principal at Buena Vista High School. When her father moved to Magnolia Iowa it only had a population of 500 however by 1876 Magnolia was removed as the county seat, which left the place with but little else than a small, local trade. Hallowed be the name Magnolia to many a pioneer, who knew the place as Harrison County's best town. He held this latter position four years with headquarters usually at Iowa City, but most often he was out in the field examining postal matters in Iowa. Both of Fanny’s brothers were entrepreneurs George and Orville together started their own newspaper publisher business in 1859 called the Magnolia Weekly Republican and then later the Dunlap Reporter after several years the first newspaper business was sold and neither George decided to farm but also carried the mail Fanny was destined to be involved with the post office yuh see back in 1854 a post office was being set up in her hometown at that time Magnolia and Fanny's dad was involved becoming postmaster a year after the post office was established in 1855. Her brother George also became postmaster in Magnolia and 1862 was subsequently appointed postmaster of the House of Representatives in Iowa. George decided to lease the newspaper to a Judge FORD, instead of selling it outright. Magnolia’s Chief feature was Schools and churches; aside from being the county seat of Harrison County Iowa which contributed toward the upbuilding of the place. The early schools were kept in private houses. In 1858 the first school building was provided at that point. It was a poor "shack" of a house, two stories high, designed for agradedschool; it was used for school purposes until 1866. Again Fanny taughtthere ! However, by 1868 she met and married Dr. Daniel O'Linn. Dr. O'Linn was a Civil War veteran who participated in "Sherman's March to the Sea" and was renowned as a physician and surgeon. Fanny, her husband and two sons at that time decided to move to Blair County in 1872, where Dr. O'Linn set up business with Dr. S.B. Taylor. The year before her brother George had the itch to get back into the newspaper business so by 1871 he started his second paper this time called the Dunlap Reporter It’s no wonder why The family was described in HarrisoncountyIowa as being strong, high-minded and with true characters. Tragically Fannie's husband died suddenly in 1880, it left Fannie alone with two sons and by that time she also had a daughter. She had to rely on herself so she decided to immediately take that principal position of she promptly took the Blair schools, followed by Tekamah, and took a leadership role in education in Washington County for four years. Her plan settle her own small frontier settlement and call it O'Linn. Many twists and turns in this journey and like all business minded entrepreneurs your best plans don’t always go as planned - the question for fanny and you is how to handle these twists and turns when confronted that’s what makes you who you are and calls you toward your destiny You see the town of O’Linn was not merely being named such because Fanny had an ego although she had every right - she was accomplished and achieve morethenmost woman or men could at the time she moved west to Nebraska to settle O’Linn. But the name was to honor the memory of her eldest son, who had died shortly after their move to what would eventually be Dawes County Northwestern Nebraska called the panhandle some say Oklahoma Fanny homesteaded near the junction of the White River and Chadron Creek, then located in Sioux County near Dakota Junction but today it’s Dawes County. Her humble abode was merely one-room, 14- by 16-foot claim cabin half dugout and half soddy. She one of a few earliest settlers in Dawes, she noted that summer that "the only houses ... were around Fort Robinson (while) we had only to throw our lines in the White River to have a catfish (and) found 49 varieties ofwild flowers." As I mentioned earlier when her son Daniel Egbert was accidentally killed, locals began calling the settlement O'Linn in his honor. I also mentioned because of her father and brothers involvement with the postal system she didn’t wasteanytimeapplying for a post office in September of 1884, and that’s how the name O'Linn stuck. One of the first shops to open was owned by another settlor Burr Sheldon It didn’t take longfirothers to quickly follow with a hardware store, bank, druggistandsaloon, some of which operated out of tents before buildings could be erected. That December 1884 the first Methodist Church service in the county, known as the White River O'Linn Charge, was held in the O'Linn cabin by Rev. Joseph Gray. Early in 1885, the population of O'Linn was advertised as 500, replete with five saloons and a dozen stores. Thus, when the Elkhorn, Fremont & Missouri Valley Railroad began scouting the area for right of way, Fannie felt certain that O'Linn would be the natural site for a depot and siding. Unfortunately, her optimism led her to ask for more money than the railroad felt was justified, and instead they bought land some six miles distant at a site they named Bordeaux. In the summer of 1885, a county seat election for the new Dawes County chose Chadron on a vote of 582 to 3 for O'Linn. I have to think that the three votes fanny received was her vote her youngest son and her daughter How was it that this pioneer dynamic accomplished woman didn’t receive one other vote from anyone else In my research it was partly do to another settlor named Edward E Egan who started the first newspaper in the town surprising it wasn’t Fanny’s brother Orville who would also settle the area as well and the fact that the Railroad probably didn’t like being told by Fanny the more aggressive terms that her Homestead would become the location for the new Railroad stop. More about that on another podcast as I will do an entire story on Edward Egan the person who got the town and Railroad to rally around the name Chadron over O’Linn. Our wrap up round is actually sponsored by Chadron.net In honor of this special town of Chadron The Chadron.net website is not just for people who live go to school work in Chadron or only Nebraskians it’s a place to learn about the rich history of the heartland of American and all this area and surrounding terroritoty has got you and your family Chadron is known as the magic city even though Fanny didn’t get her wish to name Chadron O’Linn She taught us if things to work out you pick up the pieces dust yourself off and keep moving I became fascinated with Chadron because people would ask me if I knew there was a Chadrow NE and that there is a fire co and sports wear on the Internet called Chadrow - both turned out to be errors on the Internet never corrected but back in a lot of ways I’m glad because if you go back to Chadron.net you can learn more about the Chadrow 4 Chadron project bringing more tourists and people to the area and learn about our country’s founding and the amazing stories of people that come slice at Chadron.net and tell a story that can help inspire motivate you in your life and business Now let me tell you more about this amazing town of Chadron -> When the railroad arrived in July of 1885 O'Linn or now Chadron meaning the entire town literally picked up and moved to the new site - one store even kept operating while "being trundled over the prairie." Lowenthal How many towns are you aware of the history of the US that could or can just pick up and overnight move giving it the name the magical city Despite the perceived set back of not having her Homestead as the railroad stop or name of the town like a determined person she was with true character and grit Fannie moved as well too, and not only that she became Chadron's first postmaster. Later becoming what some say the fifth female attorney in Nebraska. However studying the law under the direction of her father the judge back in Iowa must have provided her great exposure to the law thus some say she might have actually been the 2nd practicing woman attorney in Nebraska Whatever her ranking, Fannie O'Linn was one of the originators of the Northwest Nebraska Teachers Association, one of the initial promoters of Chadron's library, and again its first postmaster, becoming "one of the most widely known and respected women in the northwest ... present at the first wedding, the first birth and the first funeral in Dawes County." It doesn’t stop there for those who say I have done all I can in business and life fanny kept going she was the first female insurance broker, was also involved heavily in organizations, such as the Women's Christian Temperance Union and the women's suffrage movement Yes O'Linn battled tragedy throughout her life, but she persevered, playing a crucial role in the settlement and development of her communities both in Iowa and Nebraska I was driven by this story for so many reasons - Just think she loses her husband then her oldest son she is on the western plains of Nebraska single woman in this really harsh tough life of circumstances who despite all of this pushed forward to her own future journey. To recap in conclusion Here is a list of this amazing woman's accomplishment that only a few ever achieve: She was admitted to the bar in 1885, was responsible for keeping the land office in Chadron, then started an abstract business, she started the town called O'Linn that eventually became Chadron. She was the first postmistress of the town, and was one of the first female postmistresses." she even served as a midwife and is believed to have been responsible for helping to birth most of the children born in Dawes County from 1880 through 1910. Her life was complex, full and varied. She battled with area ranchers and businessmen, was a correspondent for the Omaha Bee, served as president and historian for Dawes County for the Nebraska Historical Association, and was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Chadron. Her influence even extended into raising the young woman who would grow to fame as Dr. Leta Stetter Hollingworth, a pioneer in women's and educational psychology at Columbia University. Unfortunately, her youngest son also predeceased her and only her daughter (who had been born in Blair County Iowa) would survive her; her descendants eventually moved away from Dawes County, leaving no one to tell her story or recount her achievements - until now. By 1890-1891 she is listed asMrsFanny O'Linn attorney at law, notary public, abstracts, insurance, real estate, and loans. Her dad moves to Chadron around this time The last years of Judge BRAINARD's life were spent in Chadron, Nebraska, with his daughter. Winston Churchill Business Startup Entrepreneurship Lessons Learned Show 061 If I could interview someone Winston Churchill would top on my list and as business owners, startups and those wanting to learn lessons of entrepreneurship you must listen up to today's show 061. Winston Churchill was a soldier, a historian, a statesman, a knight, a painter, a bricklayer, and every bit a smart-aleck a war leader and one of my hero's On today’s show learn Why Study Winston Churchill? What are we going to discuss - lessons learned - > it is not just what he said with so many awesome quotes but what he did! So many life lessons: -> Where you start means little compared to where you finish. -> Bold action and good fortune can lead to remarkable circumstances. -> Even great men have bills to worry about. -> Personality can shine from small things Winston Churchill taught business owners, startups, entrepreneurs taught everyday business startup entrepreneurial success. You don’t want to be a Neville Chamberlain in business - as an entrepreneur, you do not want to be someone who is merely willing to just go along to get along your business strategy should not be one of appeasement merely planning out of Fear What did Churchill teach us about one of the most important characteristics you must have as a business owner? Courage- “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” I always tell my younger daughter she is the voice that others don't have - when it comes to your business you are it's the biggest fan you must promote it and act as a raving fan but when surrounding yourself with a team, outside advisors and customers you also have to be willing to also listen up Churchill was big on - > Taking action and executing on his plans! He would put red labels on all his documents with the words “Action this day” His mantra was - > I never ‘worry’ about action but only about inaction” His Management style during World War II! I often ask what would have happened had Churchill, not Chamberlain was Prime Minister in 1937 but I am so thankful he did in 1940! If not this world would look a lot different then it does today Communication skills are critical to success : For example, In addition to Churchill's actions of communicating regularly to his top team of commanders in the field, another critical characteristic for business success and what Churchill was great at was his speedy resolutions he demanded that colleagues and staff all signed up for total commitment and action We all heard of people that throughout life make things happen and certainly I knew my dad as someone like that but Winston Churchill in a huge way was someone throughout his life that made things happen especially given that this world needed someone just like during the critical time in the history of the World Churchill was Relentlessly driven and focused For example, During World War, he had personal challenges yet he demanded personal bravery in the face of not only physical danger but also intense mental battles Our Start-Up Round is Sponsored by Chadrow.net - it’s not just another law firm we empower our clients about the law we work with other legal firms, paralegals, and law support personnel to provide free resource guides - Learn more about how laws are created Get free Legal service solution guides on digital assets, estate planning, gift and family law, real estate and borrowing money and so much Four key life principles to remember as they apply to you, your family and business and stories about how they also apply to the life of Winston Churchill: How you start out in business doesn't tell us much versus how you finish - This relates to Winston - When Churchill was young he not only failed to set the academic world on fire, “I did not do well in examinations. This was especially true of my Entrance Examination to Harrow. I wrote my name at the top of the page. I wrote down the number of the question. Thereafter I could not think of anything connected with it that was either relevant or true. I gazed for two whole hours at this sad spectacle: and then merciful ushers collected my piece of foolscap with all the others and carried it up to the Headmaster's table. “ Despite the stumbling start, as Boris Johnson points out, Churchill ran a race few of us could dream of matching: producing more published words than Shakespeare and Dickens combined, winning the Nobel Prize for literature, serving in every great office of state including prime minister (twice), indispensable to victory in two world wars and posthumously has paintings valued at more than a million dollars. In business, you must take bold steps or actions have some good luck but together it can create some awesome results - Captured as an obscure newspaper correspondent during the Boer war, Churchill escaped from his South African POW camp, made his way to a rail yard and hid in a box car filled with sacks of coal. Realizing Boer troops would likely search again at the next town, Churchill waited for darkness and jumped into unfamiliar countryside from the moving train. Without food or water, he was soon forced out of hiding. Unbeknownst to Churchill, the closest country house belonged to a British sympathizer and he was greeted with the words, ““Thank God you have come here! It is the only house for twenty miles where you would not have been handed over.” Churchill made it back to British lines, returning to London as a national hero – and poised to begin his political career. When you are just getting started in business everyone has concerns even the greatest most accomplished and some even worry about how they will actually pay the bills - Money worries nipped at Churchill’s heels for almost all of his adult life. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill was (unfortunately) the younger son of the Duke of Marlborough, who secured his fortune by marrying Jennie Jerome, daughter of Leonard Jerome, an American financier known as “The King of Wall Street” and frequent business partner of J.P. Morgan. Accustomed to an aristocratic life, little inheritance came Winston’s way and what he had was lost in the crash of 1929. From that point forward Churchill’s sole means of supporting a highly extravagant lifestyle came from writing articles and publishing books. Few of his peers were aware of Churchill’s constant cash flow worries. Even fewer knew he worked prodigiously because – in the words of a close friend, ““if the music stopped, he would be insolvent”. His salvation came in two forms: a complete lack of “writer’s block” and the discovery of dictation as an alternative to writing out content. Churchill created a factory approach to writing and employed a team of researchers and ghostwriters. He also developed a disguised working routine: after hosting dinner, Churchill would mimic his guests and appear to retire for the night. Instead, he walked to a suite of rooms where his staff worked with him until two or three in the morning. By the time he greeted guests at breakfast the next morning, new material was on its way to the publishers and he was a “man of leisure” again. Your personality in business can really make all the difference even by focusing on what seems to be all the small stuff and most of it is - At Churchill’s Chartwell estate, often one of a visitor’s most memorable and charming experiences is the sight of stuffed animals peeking out from the library shelves. Churchill was tremendously annoyed when books could not be found quickly. The solution he devised was to use small stuffed animals as library placeholders. The Chartwell staff professes that the animals seen in the library are legacies from Winston himself. Lightning Round sponsored by startupssmarter.com Leaving a family legacy is part of an estate plan and balance with business as an entrepreneur business owner When it comes to Churchill books: the top of my list is by Dr. Larry P. Arnn President of Hillsdale College he wrote an amazing book on Churchill called Churchill's Trial Winston Churchill and the salvation of free government - Hillsdale College is also involved with the Churchill Project and I will have a link in the show notes to that wonderful work Who are your heroes: All different people would say Winston Churchill - On show 005 we mentioned how Susan Matthews MSNBC Hardball Chris Matthews thought of Winston Churchill as his hero he is also one of my heroes. When asked what guest Chris Matthews would have most wanted to have on his Hardball show his answer the British leader. We did a show on the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Fun Fact about Churchill: President Ford gave the most comprehensive Churchill speech ever. When President Gerald Ford spoke at the commemoration of Churchill's 109th birthday at the English Speaking Union in 1983, he gave what's become known as The Churchill Lecture. So beloved was this speech that many insisted it is printed and distributed as an authoritative biography. This wish was granted, and if interested, book collectors can now find limited editions of the speech printed and signed by President Ford for sale for a couple hundred dollars. When it comes to quotes Churchill had so many awesome memorable quotes so I list numerous here because you should apply them all to your own business: On being your own publicist “History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.” That's why each of you should have your own website, blog and do your own marketing, sales and SEO because we have talked about telling your own story but you must control the message, develop the story and be your number one fan! Persistence and never given up is so critical in business and life: “Never give in–never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” keep that in mind when you think things are not going your way in business or that business is not coming in fast enough You are in business to make a profit otherwise you would run a not for profit business - “Socialists think profits are a vice; I consider losses the real vice.” each day attempt to sell your products, solutions services On perseverance “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” Don’t allow the occasional failure to discourage you in any way. We all have failed in the past, and we all will fail in the future. So much is certain. If we cannot avoid a failure we should try to learn as much as we can from it. Draw the essential conclusions out of the things that happened to you and try to give you very best to avoid similar failures the next time. Difficulties Mastered are Opportunities won. “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.” “Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality that guarantees all the others.” “An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile—hoping it will eat him last.” “Character may be manifested in the great moments, but it is made in the small ones.” “If you have an important point to make, don’t try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time-a tremendous whack.” “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” “It is no use saying, ‘We are doing our best.’ You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary.” ** Wrap Up Round Sponsored by banksmarter.com Get all the show notes at mitchellchadrow.com/show061 provide a well written review in itunes it will only take two minutes mitchellchadrow.com/itunes One month before America joined Britain in World War II to battle hitler in the great battle he said: "The only guide to a man is his conscience;" he said, "the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions. It is imprudent to walk through life without this shield because we are often mocked by the failure of our hopes and the upsettings of our calculations; but with this shield, however, the fates may play, we march always in the ranks of honor." What is true bravery well today so many politicians cling to their office, Winston acted as if he was truly prepared to walk away, to risk what others said and what the talking heads preached and knowing the rejection, which came to him on so many unbearable occasions, but he refused to be someone that he wasn't - > a mantra I always say "to they shelf be true" He didn’t spend a lot of wasted energy and he didn't believe in anger on what his critics thought, didn’t ask what someone else’s definition of "is" was. He wrote his own speeches because no one else but he had the sentiment, the knowledge, the passion to write for himself: Winston Churchill. The goal of World War II, this great man said, was "to revive the status of man." He wanted to raise up the individual beyond the reach of the evil monsters of this world hitlers and stalins. "What is the use of living," he asked, "if it is not to strive for nobler causes and to make this muddled world a better place for those who will live in it after we are gone?" don't forget balance business with family and life. The post Emergency Information Systems Product Designer Developer Jared Therrien Show 051 was re-published on listenupshow.com We are interviewing Jared Therrien on today's Show 051 Jared is the founder of Emergency Information Systems, LLC The company offers decal and hardware products which increase the situational awareness of emergency responders throughout incidents in high-occupancy buildings. What are we going to learn: 1) How Emergency Information Systems designs, develops and sells their products. 2) The importance of reducing emergency response times by providing missing information during an incident to responding personnel. 3) How to see a problem then ask yourself specific questions that will help your end user solve their issues! 4) How to find your customer Our startup round: 1) Jared - In real estate, we hear that mantra: Location location location but location is not just for real estate apparently it is also the single most important piece of information that emergency response personnel need to know. Tell us about that - 2) how does the company solve this problem? 3) Manufacture process ? THE BEST MATERIALS 4) What is the Wayfinder™ Safety System? 5) Window Appliquies? Wayfinder™ Window Appliques are a stylish wayfinding option. Vinyl creates a modern look and makes a great addition to any renovation project. We use a reflective film to frost the entire window and then cut large numbers out of the film. This option also increases privacy on ground-floor windows. Windows are great points of access and egress for school buildings, but without proper markings, they cannot be used effectively during emergency situations. Campus security experts around the country recommend placing decals in classroom windows, indicating which window belongs to each classroom. This helps response crews to gather important information about the incident location and increase situational awareness, speeding egress from windows and operations overall. Reflective Numeral Decals? Wayfinder™ Reflective Numeral Decals are highly visible. They are the only inside-glass mount/interior-installation reflective decals on the market. The high-intensity Prismatic film is used to increase visibility and durability, ensuring proper exterior wayfinding for your school for years to come. Why Wayfinder™ Decals? Taking into account the principles of Environmental Graphic Design, which blends elements of the interior, architectural, and wayfinding/navigational design, we have optimized our decals to best serve the functional needs of first responders and the aesthetic needs of the school customer. High Visibility Reflective Vinyl Unlike many other existing options, WAYFINDER™ Reflective Numeral Decals and Window Appliques are reflective, ensuring maximum visibility at all times of the day and night, and in all-weather conditions. Our decals are made of a premium-grade retro-reflective vinyl. We proudly make all decal products out of the highest quality vinyl films and materials available on the market. Durable & Attractive WAYFINDER™ Window Appliques provide a modern look to your school while increasing safety. These beautiful decals often outlast their 10-year rated life, resisting damage and fading caused by constant sunlight exposure. Strong, permanent adhesives prevent peeling and vandalism. Resources Funding & Grant Opportunities Our goal at EIS is to reduce emergency response times and save lives. We know budgets are tight and funding is hard to come by. To make our school security and wayfinding products affordable for everyone, we price our products competitively. Additionally, we have prepared a list of School & Campus Security grants and funding resources to help offset costs. Be sure to check with your local and state governments for grant opportunities. Today on Show 050 we are interviewing Hamilton Perkins Hamilton Perkins Collection uses recycled plastic bottles to manufacture travel bag canvas and recycled vinyl billboard material for the duffle bag lining. Hamilton Perkins is the founder and President of Hamilton Perkins Collection, an e-commerce retailer, offering designer travel bags at an affordable price while holding the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. What are we going to learn today: how Hamilton came up with his idea, what problem he was solving and testing the product concept. We are going to talk sales and marketing and find out how he does it! From manufacturing to distribution. The Hamilton Perkins Collection has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, and Money Magazine. Now on the Listenup Show! Prior to starting Hamilton Perkins Collection, he was the winner of the 2016 Virginia Velocity Tour business pitch competition hosted by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. What other things do we learn - How Hamilton came up with the business idea to solve this problem. Hamilton Perkins was preparing to travel to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Madrid and Athens with classmates in his executive MBA program when he came across a problem: He couldn’t find the right carry-on bag. They were either too flimsy, too impractical or too mainstream. So he decided to create his own. How to build a successful crowdfunding campaign with kickstarter. Hamilton raised: $14,329 of a $10,000 goal (as of July 14). The campaign began June 30 and ended July 30. The unique bag making manufacturing process and his successful experience in creating an environmentally sustainable product and supply chain. At Hamilton Perkins Collection the travel bags, line of duffel bags and backpacks are actually made out of 100% recycled plastic bottles and lined with vinyl from repurposed billboards. Each bag is different, unique. How Hamilton Perkins got his Collection into the Department stores. How he tested the idea before launching. Perkins began setting up focus groups with family members and friends to get their ideas about what they wanted in a bag. He also searched Twitter for ideas and combed through hundreds of one-star luggage reviews on Amazon.com to get a sense of common customer complaints. (Jeffrey P. Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com, owns The Washington Post.) “No one is as serious or as truthful about something until they’re mad about a purchase,” Perkins said. “Customer reviews are a world of their own. They contain so much information.” Eventually, a theme emerged in his research: “The main things we kept coming up with were duffel bag and backpack, backpack and duffel bag,” Perkins said. “That, and people wanted something that was unique.” He decided to combine those three things and designed a bag that doubles as both duffel and backpack. (Picture a traditional duffel bag with backpack straps on the bottom. The bag has a three-way zipper so its contents can be accessed from either the top of the bag or its side, and all straps can be zipped away when not in use.) Perkins researched different types of material, too, and teamed up with Thread International, a company that makes fabric using recycled materials, for his first prototype. The fabric on the outside of the bag is made of recycled plastic bottles, while the inside of each bag is created from repurposed vinyl from old billboards. A factory in Oregon makes each bag. “Personally, I think the days of everyone buying the same cookie-cutter product are over,” Perkins said. “People want things that are unique and special.” Perkins has already invested more than $25,000 of his savings into the one-man company and says he was looking for a way to get the word out about his bag. He set a $10,000 goal on Kickstarter and was surprised when the money began rolling in right away. Within a week, he’d met his goal. “You really don’t know what’s going to happen on a site like that,” he said. “This could have done great or it could have bombed.” Luckily for Perkins, it was the former. About halfway through his campaign, he has raised nearly $15,000 from 100 backers. A $95 pledge gets donors a duffel bag, while $295 gets them the company’s convertible backpack. Fast Pitch Round book: The Bible What contributes most to your success app productivity business finance Best business advice you ever received Wrap Up Round How can people stay in touch Three main take aways What’s next? In parting leave us with your philosophy in business, family and life Perkins said it will take until December to manufacture his first batch of 1,000 bags for Kickstarter backers. From there, he plans to add four more colors to his line-up and eventually look into creating other products. “There are a lot of interesting things going on with technology and fabrics, so we could look into integrating conductive fabric into our products or making it possible for them to communicate with smartphones and other devices,” he said. “Bags are just a starting point.” Hamilton was an Investment Advisor at Merrill Lynch and, earlier, worked as an Analyst at Bank of America. He has also served in a leadership capacity with various non-profit organizations and has been recognized for his volunteer work and service hours assisting low-income populations. Hamilton is also a contributing blogger for The Huffington Post. has hosted trunk shows at Bloomingdale’s was a financial planner for Merrill Lynch. Lives Norfolk, Va. He is a graduate of Old Dominion University with a degree in Business Administration and he earned his M.B.A. from William and Mary. Huffington Post Turning Trash Into Fashion The Problem In 2014, I thought carefully about my quest to find a unique and socially responsible backpack. It all started when I was having a personal problem while earning my MBA at William and Mary. I was planning to travel on global immersion experiences to Asia and Europe and felt that my options to find a bag that I could be proud to carry were severely limited. Before the vision to turn plastic bottles into bags at Hamilton Perkins Collection, we simply were not satisfied with the selections available in the growing global bag market. We came to the industry from a customer’s point of view and we sought to use this as an advantage. In the beginning, we thought a lot about establishing a for-profit organization that would be driven by social progress. We thought that this could be the catalyst to support the vision for building a better bag. We surveyed friends, family, and prospects to understand the market opportunity and saw a big gap between the ubiquitous bags that sold for less than $100 and the high-end luxury bags that sold for north of $500. Additionally, we were passionate about solving problems and noticed first hand the modern inconvenience of waste in the form of plastic bottles. At the time it just seemed as if the benefits of recycling were not fully addressing concerns in our everyday lives. Moreover, we saw how this affected social and environmental issues and we knew we had to start building our proposition around carrying a bag that looks good and that makes a difference. A key finding from our research was that most bags were one dimensional, not giving the traveler the option to choose the version of the bag that was most suitable for them. We formed our thesis around the pain points that our focus groups were voicing to us and turned to one star Amazon reviews and algorithms for deeper unfiltered data. The Solution We developed the Hamilton Perkins Collection Earthbag, an all-in-one convertible backpack made out of recycled plastic bottles and lined with vinyl from repurposed billboards. The Hamilton Perkins Collection Earthbag features a 3-way zippered compartment that allows easy access to laptops, books, and travel documents. The Value Our bags are the perfect pick if you’re looking for the right blend of style and function. 1. Recycled Plastic Bottles - Hamilton Perkins Collection Earthbags are the world’s first impactful and transparent bags: made out of 100% recycled plastic bottles. 2. Repurposed Billboards - The Hamilton Perkins Collection Earthbags are lined with repurposed billboard vinyl. Each bag’s lining is different, each bag is unique. 3. Design, transparency, and impact - Hamilton Perkins Collection bags reduce waste, cut carbon emissions in the environment, and conserve water. A New Perspective Fast forward to 2016, Hamilton Perkins Collection earned its status as a Certified B Corporation® by offering designer travel bags at an affordable price, while holding the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Starting at $95, we are proud to make exceptional products that make a difference one bag at a time. Design Thinking Design and function are two driving forces behind our product line. Our approach to design has been customer-centric from day one. We take great pride in seeing the world from the customer’s point of view first and then taking it upon ourselves to be the change that we seek. We prototype and ideate dynamically to find what works for the traveler and what doesn’t. We get excited about making something that doesn’t exist and seeing it bring change and make a difference. At the end of the day, it’s about people for us and when they trust us to design the bag that they carry we don’t take the opportunity lightly. Our level of care sets us apart in a market where there are so many options to choose from. Hamilton Perkins Collection was born out of a simple necessity: the need for affordable designer bags that look good, perform well and make a difference. Similar to many travelers in the world we had trouble finding a socially conscious bag that met our basic needs in a practical and responsible way. We researched the industry and found that most options were average quality. The majority of the bag makers maintain low prices with high levels of secrecy around how they can achieve it. Other bags are excellent quality and their cost is way too much for the price. What is available to the modern traveler looking to find purpose in every journey? We founded Hamilton Perkins Collection to be an alternative. We stripped down the traditional walls of the retail world and invited our customers to share their comments and thoughts with us in a way not previously feasible. We interviewed countless travelers to start new authentic relationships and they told us how we could best serve their needs when re-engineering a classic travel bag. Most brands look at philanthropy and giving as an afterthought but we see it as an essential part of running a business today. In collaboration with our workshops and suppliers, we are committed to supporting fair wages and delivering value to less developed nations by sourcing raw materials that divert thousands of plastic bottles, save water, add revenue, and create jobs in parts of the world that need it the most. We track our progress and submit to rigorous third party review to ensure accuracy and accountability. With billions of plastic bottles thrown away each year, the average person still throws away as much as 180 pounds of plastic in the same period of time. It takes 500-1,000 years for plastic to degrade. We address these issues by partnering with organizations like Thread, to turn trash into fashion with every bag we sell. When you buy our bags, together we reduce waste levels, cut carbon emissions, conserve water - and create jobs. Final Thoughts Change is a funny thing. We’ve experienced change and its many benefits by carrying the Earthbag in our everyday lives. We have sparked lifestyle adjustments that were not evident until examining a simple travel bag. Although we successfully funded our debut Kickstarter campaign in under a week and were selected a Kickstarter “Project We Love” you can still reserve a Hamilton Perkins Collection Earth Bag until July 29, 2016, and learn more about how our epiphany is changing lives. Follow us on Snapchat: hamiltonperkins Digital trends For the members of a generation raised on instant gratification, it can be difficult to see the benefits of recycling. After all, how do we really know where those plastic bottles go after we've separated them? Hamilton Perkins has an answer -- they go into designer travel bags that are as sleek as they are safe for the environment. Reaching its Kickstarter goal in under a week, Hamilton Perkins and its 100-percent eco-friendly bags promise luxury at an affordable price, "while holding the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency." Every bag from this green atelier is made from recycled plastic bottles, but that's not where the reusing ends. The lining of all Hamilton Perkins bags is made of repurposed billboards, and while each bag is unique and different (no really, look inside), they all share the same green DNA. Designed to reduce waste levels, cut carbon emissions in the environment, and conserve water, these bags are a purchase you don't have to feel bad about. And because they start at just $95, your wallet probably won't be too offended either. The company's signature Earth bag is branded as an "all-in-one bag that converts into a backpack or duffle bag." With its three-way zippered compartment, you can easily access laptops, books, travel documents, and more. Noting that the average person throws away up to 180 pounds of plastic in a year, Hamilton Perkins looked to turn trash into fashion with each of its products. "In collaboration with our workshops and suppliers, we committed to supporting fair wages and delivering value to less developed nations by sourcing raw materials that divert plastic bottles, save water, add revenue, and create jobs in parts of the world that need it the most," the company says on its Kickstarter page. "We track our progress and submit to rigorous third-party review to ensure accuracy and accountability." So if you're looking for a new bag for your vacation season this summer, Hamilton Perkins just may be your solution. Special thanks to Daniel Zhu, Operations department for team Hamilton Perkins Collection. He told me that the company produces one of the world's first impactful and ethical designer bags made entirely out of recycled plastic bottles and billboard vinyl. The Hamilton Perkins Collection Earth bag reduces waste levels, cuts carbon emissions in the environment, and conserves water. I'm writing on behalf of Hamilton, the company founder, to ask if you would consider having him as a guest on your podcast. He would love the opportunity to discuss the unique bag making process and his successful experience in creating an environmentally sustainable product and supply chain. Supply Solutions Enterprise Six Sigma Business Success Planning Meredith Reuben Show 046 Start up Round We discussed supply solutions, Six Sigma and Business Success Planning with Meredith Reuben, CEO of EBP Supply. A quick glimpse into the legacy of her family business helps reveal why Meredith’s pull to lead it was so strong. In 1918, her grandparents, Samuel and Sadye Baum, started EBP Supply Solutions as Easter Bag & Paper in Bridgeport, CT. BP Supply Solutions is a leading distribution partner that provides a broad range of cleaning and foodservice supplies and services for businesses that rely on best-in-class insight, products & tools, and demand custom, transparent relationships. The company services organizations in the eastern United States across buildings, institutions (including government and education), healthcare, recreation, and food service markets. Headquartered in Milford, CT, it operates out of three distribution centers (Milford CT, Tewksbury, MA, and Cranbury, NJ) and achieves national distribution in partnership with Network® Distribution Services. EBP is fully-owned and operated by Meredith Reuben, CEO; is classified as a Women’s Business Enterprise; and holds WBENC National Certificate Number 243449. For more information, listenup to the interview. Meredith Reuben left her job as a lawyer to lead the family business, EBP Supply Solutions into its third generation of ownership. During her tenure, EBP Supply has grown from a local distributorship servicing a small area in Connecticut to a regional supply solutions enterprise. Meredith reveals how natural curiosity, undeterred perseverance and focus can help you achieve whatever goals you wish to reach. Meredith was in her late 20s when she walked away from her law career to join the family business. EBP Supply Solutions, which was known as Eastern Bag & Paper at the time. EBP continues to grow by making smart acquisitions like Salem Paper in the Boston area. These continued smarter acquisitions strengthened their ability to service the entire State of Connecticut. As Meredith worked to grow the business, she was also growing her family. She admits that it was a challenging time as she balanced the demands of the business and the needs of her young children and hard working lawyer husband. “As a mother, you are in operational mode when your kids are young,” she said, “It can be stressful. But early on, learned to set an annual priority list. That really helped me to allocate my time between career and family. Sure, I felt the guilt, I was there to drive them to school, and I made it a point to be home for dinner so I could hear about their day and do homework with them. Making that the priority and aligning the rest of my activities around that helped me tremendously.” While she credits having a Supportive spouse, she also started a walking group with other women in the neighborhood. This sisterhood helped offer support as she worked to balance the challenges of career and family. Meredith led her EBP Supply Company a new 166,00 square foot facility in Milford Connecticut just 12 miles north of Bridgeport. This enabled them to consolidate operations into a centralized warehouse. They also have two additional facilities each with 166,000 square feet. Meredith represents the third generation of leadership in the family business and now how son represents the fourth generation. Looking back, she recognizes the many challenges she overcame during that period, including the difficulties of identifying how she wanted to approach her management and leadership style. “Whether or not you are inheriting the company from your mother or father, or succeeding in your position from a strong manager, one of the biggest challenges- particularly, if it is going from male to female- is what kind of persona or style should you assume?” Her father and mother had great names in the industry and quickly learned that she did not have to copy their styles or strengths. What she needed was to be congruent to her own personality and utilize her strengths, and surround herself with people who supplemented areas where she wasn’t strong, contribute all of her efforts in her own unique way. That effort proved to be ambitious- she led the Company through several subsequent acquisitions and along with her team, grew EBP to be a regional distributor which now serves enterprises in all of New England and the Middle Atlantic States, The desire to help people grow and success had helped drive EBP’s strategic plan. Recognizing that an organization can only be its best when driven by a diverse group of stakeholders with different voices and backgrounds, she is working with the leadership of EBP to set goals around diversity, Meredith works to empower women through mentorship programs within EBP, Locally and internationally. She does this through local family business groups, the ISSA Hygieia Network, and through WIN, which is a group within Network Distribution, an international buying and selling organization. She wants to see more women in leadership positions throughout the cleaning industry. She has surrounded herself with a highly capable team of professionals who have brought skill sets to continuously improve the efficiency, productivity, Culture and operations in place. Her son Andrew is currently the Vice President of Marketing,: One of her favorite poems, which she keeps on her desk to inspire her daily, is “if,” written by Rudyard Kipling On the best advice, she’s received: “Understand the objectives and ignore all the noise.” – Jerry Rueben, her father. Meredith on leading: if you’re going to survive and thrive, you need to read, be Curious, and constantly have a learning and open mentality. She surrounds herself with people who share this same quality. It’s whom she hires. Video Resume Platform Rezzio was founded at the heart of Drexel University's college of entrepreneurship, Close School of Entrepreneurship. The school provides students with the tools and knowledge to help bring their concepts to fruition. Rezzio started in a Drexel University classroom and today has helped Rezzio showcase their personality. Jessica Sarkisian, founder graduated from Drexel University in June of 2015. Jessica knew there was more to getting a job than submitting a simple resume and application. Jessica played Division 1 soccer for four years at Drexel, leaving her resume full of nothing more than soccer accomplishments. Though she worked over forty hours a week dedicating her time to a sport, her resume did not reflect her hard work, devotion, and personality. 80% of people do not believe their paper resume reflects their capabilities or personalities. Referring back to Life Strategies entrepreneurship class at Drexel University, video resumes were a class requirement. Though it was a requirement to create a video many students did not know where to start. How do I make a video resume that shows my personality and lands me the job? Thus, Rezzio was born. Rezzio began as a video resume platform, showing candidates how to create a video resume that best depicts their personality. After a year of research and development, Rezzio has perfected its 3-step process to LAND THE JOB. James A McCormick IV is an NFL sports entertainment talent advisor and also a commercial real estate agent for Sperry Van Ness. It is always a good idea to have more than one stream of income coming in. James is not the first real estate professional that we have interviewed. We also spoke with Susan Matthews who handles the residential real estate market What are some the things do we cover with James in this Listen Up Show. James has deep ties in the commercial real estate market but he also earns from doing sports and entertainment. I asked him about his time as league executive in the NFL national football league and his experience as a director of all player & talent marketing initiatives for the league; time at NFL films along with those struggles at Valley Forge military college. For those who want to take a more passive role in real estate, there is a company called realtyshares that allows you to earn passive income in real estate. Our guest's stories are what really makes interviewing James so special. He talks to us about his relationship with Troy Vincent the Executive Vice President of Operation for the NFL & the 2003 infamous Eagles NFC Championship year. So what are his motto's in life and what does he attribute to his success: be prepared, be Ready for the opportunity and always over deliver. He built his own character at an early age from church, music and his family. He coined a phrase: outwork the work - for all the things that must be done you must be the last person standing. Be your own visionary, knowing where you are going. Some key things to take away from the show: 1) Look within an introspective; 2) Center yourself to focus; 3) Master the key to executing on your ideas. He also recalls two great football story's the first is about NFL Films - Steve Sable, his mentor, Player Relations who has dealt with 80 producers, 12 networks: CBS, ESPN, HBO, NFL Network, the science of contacting current and former players, building trust and relationships, owners: Cris Carter & Bobby Taylor, when Brian Westbrook - returned a punt against the Giants and went on to win their next 9 games that season, Donovan McNab, Duce Staley Playoffs Green Bay Packers 4th and 26th at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, no timeouts with the clock at 1:12 seconds pass to Freddie Mitchell David Akers made a field goal went into overtime Brian Dawkins intercepted a pass by Brett Favre returned it 35 yards set up another field goal for David Akers giving Eagles win 20-17 sent Eagles to third straight NFC Championship Game but they lost to the Carolina Panthers. It will be awesome to speak with him about the Eagles Super Bowl win this year.
LISTENUPSHOW Governance, strategy meets growth, sage advice from Thomas L. Doorley, Chairman, CEO, Cofounder. Tom tells us it’s satisfying to help entrepreneur's across the full cycle of Stage 0 (idea) through to Stage 4 (sustainable enterprise). All young companies have to face the daunting task of “crossing the Valley of Death”, also known in academic circles as “crossing the Chasm”. This is the fact that describes the competitive dynamics in a business sector where lots of small, high-growth, young companies exist and a few much larger, more established companies have scale and scope. The challenge: How to go from young/small (Stage 1-2) to the other side of the Valley (Stage 4) where they have enough process, structure, and scale in place to be ‘sustainable’ In the case of his first startup, Braxton Associates, a strategy consulting firm launched after the Boston Consulting Group defined the consulting space they named”Strategy” and Bain & Co followed suit, we were half a decade late to the game. They grew organically from their Boston base to a second office in London and a joint venture in Tokyo (he knew they had to be global). They grew rapidly to about 100 professionals. His Valley to jump was the challenge to be 10X the size to meet the competition in the battle for major clients. They were approached by the then CEO of Touche Ross (prior to their merger with Deloitte) to become their operational and IT consultancy into the sphere of C-Suite advisors. Two years after they joined the merger with Deloitte was consummated. Tom has helped successful entrepreneur's like Matthew Marolda who is now Chief Analytics Officer at Legendary Entertainment. He formed and runs Legendary’s Applied Analytics division, which uses data and analytics to drive strategic decisions across all aspects of the company. Prior to Legendary, Matt Marolda founded StratBridge LLC in 1999. StratBridge had two software solutions businesses: “moneyball” player analysis software used by many organizations in the NFL, NBA, European Football and Major League Soccer (sold to XOS Digital in 2012), and dynamic pricing and revenue analysis software used by many professional sports teams (acquired by Legendary in 2014, after Mr. Marolda had joined Legendary). He earned his MBA at the Tuck School at Dartmouth where he won the Adams Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship. Matt Marolda graduated from Bowdoin College with Honors, earning majors in economics and mathematics and a minor in art history. Tom's other clients: Northrop Grumman, Deloitte, and Abeam Consulting (Japan). Most recently the New England Region of Deloitte for Retired Partners honored Tom in their Hall of Fame – this past December 2016. Tom spoke to a group of 2000 employees about a balanced life. If you missed our last show with Nick Delmonico his company is creating wearable technology to manage asthma and on our next show it's our year in wrap up. mitchellchadrow.com/show031
Nick is developing a smart asthma management patent pending technology. He currently is getting a Masters of Business Administration in Healthcare at the Fox School of Business and Management Temple University. What we will discuss on today’s show: Nick is developing a smart asthma management patent pending technology. He is currently getting a Masters of Business Administration in Healthcare at the Fox School of Business and Management Temple University. We talk to Nick about his personal story, background and what he is doing to help people. He also tells us why he got into the business of asthma management. Our in-depth interview also touched on sales and distribution channels and the strategy for building it out in the future and raising money, pivoting from the initial design, how to commercialization and various go to market strategies. For Nick, it’s about solving problems not just coming up with a rockstar idea. As a child asthma impacted Nick sending him to the nurse’s office and to the hospital. He dealt with it and played sports actively. We also talked to him about targeting the end user and making key changes on the device from feedback. The first version was going to be a necklace piece of jewelry but he had to pivot and iteract quickly. He first pitched the idea to solve the problem to help people find out and learn more about asthma at a Jefferson Hospital Health Hackathon sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield. He created a real rough prototype and pitched it to the judges. With the original prototype he needed to pivot and made changes. His team consists of a biomedical engineer now an MD, neurologist at Jefferson Hospital and lead technologist. A software engineer from the hardware side. It’s not a diagnostic test like sounds of your lungs for asthma management. Nick did online asthma surveys as well as in person. Determined that a necklace with an adhesive type of device was not going to work but a chest strap idea would work better as it was able to stay clean so the process of iteration and leverage and focusing on what the end user really wanted was key as they came up with rapid prototyping. So how do they plan on patenting the technology and raise money? It’s all about leveraging resources – the group first went to the Drexel Law Club who work with entrepreneurial early stage startups but they did not have an FDA focus on technologies. However, Temple University Institute of Entrepreneurial Innovation helped provide a local patent attorney. Strados Labs won a business competition this past spring and received an in-kind gift for that patent attorney which was provided pro bono to help them with the provisional patent. It was sponsored by Be Your Own Boss Bowl competition. In additional to working with intellectual law firm Ceaser Rivise Temple University provides Strados Labs with working space. They college creatively packages these resources together in one bucket so that startup entrepreneurs can leverage all the resources. The competition provides three tracks: undergrad, grad, faculty, social tracks. Strados came in second only for Nick to lose to his professor. Ellen Weber is the Director of the Temple University Institute for Entrepreneurial Innovation who work with other venture capital firms like Benjamin Franklin Technology Partners , Robinhood, Mid-Atlantic Ventures who work with startups We discussed the prototype and patent as well as how the company will get the technology to their end users, distributing and selling the technology. They anticipate having the provisional patent filed by the end of this year. Once the provisional patent has been filed with their end claims which give them first file rights if someone else comes up with the concept the first to file has a better claim to the idea. Strados Labs will have 12 months to spend finalizing the software and hardware algorithms – When dealing with a patent it’s important to note what a company can say and what they keep secret It comes down to what is proprietary or internal v what they can mention to the public. We know the company is developing a wearable device but they keep the sound capture feature private. Their goal is to provide extra value in this narrow niche. Focus on those end users to help them manage their asthma, provide advice and feedback from the device, survey done signs symptoms of an asthma attack of wheezing – sometimes wheezing starts slowly in lungs and you try through your own will to identify those signs and alerting them it’s not a diagnostic but alert something is happening to them alert to phone and message to parent or someone else take inhaler stop exercises breath deeply its an alert monitor track and monitor on back end but focus now is on front end – how they are bringing in people to do research – test it – market service – white papers how asthma needs to be better managed and that 2/3 can be prevented by not medicines but just managing it better – market research targeting asthmatics online forum Reddit American asthma foundation aaii – healthcare, MBA take quick survey for feedback to validate get qualitative information on people’s condition some type of technology to better manage people’s disease work with asthma research in NY how environment effects and how such technology would help doing focus groups up in Harlem pre-testing phase using this technology get feedback early then use it for testing. We asked about some of the challenging moments the company has faced as a new startup and Nick being a business leader – they are entering a high regulatory, high barrier, high capital intensive business and also managing individuals. Nick working his day job and doing this at night and on weekends also while he was in California during the summer while the doctor neurologist was back in the Philadelphia area. Nick had to find the time and make sure he was communicating effective and quickly needed to find the right people and manage the work stream and also maintain his current job. What wanted to know what contributes to his success – he said a relationship with his co-founders the neurologist and although Nick is the face of Strados Labs his co-founder makes things smooth when running ideas past him or acting as a sounding board for being a devil’s advocate which balances the good with the bad. Its good to be positive but things are not always rosy so his co-founder is a good balance keeping him well grounded. Insurance reimbursement of the device for asthma management. The problem is that once a year people with asthma can be admitted to the ER with cost of $2500 and where it costs $20,000 a device for their solution $150 bucks can reduce risk to go to hospital and reduce those high-risk individuals by 60% less reduce asthma and reduce potential death or going to ER. The plan on having the insurance company reimburse through ins company and promoted by doctor hard time managing we will provide you pluma ware system reimbursed end users, not the person using it but doctors new business development force Build a relationship with insurance area health technology comp who work with Medicaid and chronic diseases – use reminders to become more engaged with asthma management to leverage their device to partner with health systems improve health understand educate them innovation partnership spoke at hackathon non-hackathon sponsored by BCBS. Advice for others he gives – to startup overwhelming most common mistakes students or preventing them from starting – coming up with a rockstar idea best idea and they stop if they think it’s not the best – for him ideas change so much focus on problem and improvement upon those issues or problems – he started with wanting to solve the problem now is developing the solution focus on problems v ideas – Recurring themes resources – help – people here to help – at top-ranked entrepreneurial program Philadelphia meet ups network events talk to them about ideas – Philly startup leaders – new in CC – new tech meetup Philly – leverage through temple Univer entrepreneur network summer studio incubator reach out to those you know in entrepreneurship – intellectual property hardship creating things v creating apps people want to invest in electrons v atoms – Fully functional is challenge for things apps that is coding but here you have to build it and test it so more difficult to get funding federal grant challenging to get through Kickstarter IndieGoGo developing things medical devices – if he knew about these resources 6 months ago – doesn’t want to fail but will now know them federal funds natural science foundation SBIR funding process dept of engineer institute of health all have funds for small business who want to start businesses who will help him write the grants trying to leverage innovation partnership through the small business association dev a tech national science foundation and they like your idea resources pre-proposal key components of stuff and how to develop commercialization of it Voucher stipend to write grant, someone, to help SBIR agency to send to – Lightning round sponsored by audible. A book Nick recommends – The Alchemist, written by Paulo Coelho de Souza – It’s about an individual on his journey to find a treasure. His entire motivation as a shepherd is to be rich but he goes on journey not where you get but how you get there he ends up the same – for him, it’s about the journey what he has learned and get to place he wants to go and help asthma Three take-aways from show: Don’t be afraid to ask questions even as a new entrepreneur just talk to people about your idea to many people get caught up it being secreative or having to much concern about signing NDA, your idea will get stronger if you talk more about it; Focus on who you are working with, some people want to work with their friends but be careful who you work with and who you bring onto your team they might have a certain skill set but focus on the person beyond just their skill set and make sure it’s aligned with your vision; Have fun it’s an exciting journey, it’s risky but just be smart.
