En 2025, plus de 11 milliards d'euros ont été misés en France sur des compétitions sportives, dont plus de la moitié sur des matchs de foot. Une somme faramineuse qui cache aussi un haut potentiel addictif. Avec des conséquences désastreuses pour les joueurs et leurs proches : endettement, conflits familiaux, dépression et même tentative de suicide. Environ un million de personnes sont concernées en France. « On commence à parier. On gagne les premières fois. Ensuite, j'ai perdu tout ce que j'avais gagné. On se dit "je vais me refaire, c'est tellement simple". Un jour, le compte est en négatif. Cela va vite. » À 35 ans, Louis parie tous les jours. La veille de notre rencontre, les quarts de finale de la Ligue des champions n'ont pas fait exception. « Mon dernier pari, c'est Bayern-Real », confie-t-il. Une habitude, ou plutôt un cercle vicieux, dans lequel il est tombé il y a quinze ans et qui a profondément changé sa façon de regarder le football. « On devient expert dans tous les sports », plaisante-t-il. « À la fac, j'ai un ami qui m'a montré un site de paris en me montrant qu'il pouvait combiner les cotes À la fin, il misait un euro et pouvait en récolter 1 500. Je me suis dit "waouh, c'est si simple" et j'ai commencé à regarder les matchs en fonction de l'argent que je pouvais me faire dessus. Les matchs qui m'intéressent – par exemple, je supporte Arsenal et Lens parfois –, je ne parie pas dessus. Sinon je n'aurais pas de plaisir à regarder le match. Toutes les équipes, je les vois comme des possibilités de m'enrichir et non comme des équipes de foot. » En 2025, rien qu'en France, plus de six milliards d'euros ont été misés sur du football, selon l'Autorité nationale des jeux (ANJ). Une somme qui illustre l'ampleur des dépenses, parfois vertigineuses, qu'un joueur comme Louis peut engager sans même s'en rendre compte. « Le mois où j'ai le plus misé, c'est 20 000 euros. Cela veut dire que j'ai regardé mon compte et j'avais une dépense de 20 000. J'ai fait 19 000 de gain, donc la bascule n'est "que" de 1 000 euros, mais je suis perdant dans la grande majorité des cas. Maintenant, c'est beaucoup moins car je me suis calmé. Mais en fait, ça va très vite. À un moment, on bascule de 10 euros à 100 euros. On se fait emporter par la vague et, pour s'en sortir, on nage et on finit épuisé sur la plage. » « Au début, je jouais avec mon compte bancaire de tous les jours. Je vivais très bien pendant un mois, et l'autre mois, je mangeais des conserves parce que je n'avais rien du tout, raconte-t-il. Il y a quelques années, j'ai fait un compte dédié à ça. J'ai mis de l'argent dessus, je l'ai fait fructifier, et je ne l'utilise que pour ça. » Quand on lui demande s'il lui est arrivé de se faire peur, sa réponse est sans équivoque : « Comme au poker, j'ai tout misé et ce n'est pas passé. J'ai tout perdu. Après, on ne dort pas bien. Cela affecte le moral et l'humeur. Il y a le Louis de tous les jours et le Louis quand il perd beaucoup : c'est la catastrophe. » « Je sais qu'au fond de moi, j'ai un problème avec le jeu. Avec le fantasme que je mets dans le jeu, reconnaît-il. C'est extraordinaire et en même temps terrifiant : quand je joue, je me dis que ma vie va changer. » En France, un million de joueurs comme Louis sont considérés comme ayant un comportement à risque. À cela s'ajoutent 400 000 joueurs qui, eux, ont basculé et sont catégorisés comme addicts, selon l'Association de recherche et de prévention des excès de jeu (Arpej), dont est membre Georges Martinho. « Le fait d'être un homme, jeune, d'avoir eu dans sa vie ou son entourage un gain marquant, d'avoir des problèmes de couple. Ce sont des facteurs de vulnérabilité », explique-t-il. Les premiers signes d'un comportement à risque ? « Lorsque les mises sont plus hautes que prévues, lorsque le jeu empiète sur la vie familiale ou amicale du joueur, et lorsque les motivations changent : on ne joue plus pour le plaisir, mais pour se refaire. » L'Autorité nationale des jeux a mis en place des outils pour s'autoévaluer, rappelle-t-il : « Il existe différents dispositifs pour éviter la bascule : se bannir des applications, se bannir des casinos… » Neurologiquement, l'addiction aux jeux d'argent et de hasard fonctionne comme la dépendance à l'alcool ou au tabac. Mais, selon Georges Martinho, le sentiment de honte et de déni empêche encore plus les malades de tendre la main. « Moins de 2 % des joueurs problématiques ont recours aux soins. » Si vous êtes préoccupé par votre pratique ou celle d'un proche, le numéro de SOS Joueurs est le 09 69 39 55 12. Secret Pour-igins: Sambuca Cocktail: The Owl Ingredients (per drink): 1 Lemon wheel or lemon twist 1 Lemon wedge Sugar on a plate to rim the glass 1 ½ oz Vodka ¾ oz lemon juice ¾ oz Sambuca Ice Instructions Chill a martini glass or coupe. If you have neither, you can use a short rocks glass or even a wine glass. Use your imagination. Rim the edge of your glass with the lemon wedge Run the edge around the plate with sugar to rim the glass with sugar. If you're not a big sugar person, rim half the glass edge. Set the glass to the side In a shaker, add the vodka, lemon juice, sambuca, and ice.
