Welcome to the Schaarai Zedek Podcast, where you'll find live recordings of sermons, divrei Torah, teachings, and stories from our Erev Shabbat and High Holy Day services. We know that life gets in the way, and that's okay—Judaism isn't just about what happens in the synagogue, but also how we live it every day. So whether you're at home, on your way, or out for a morning run, we're here for you. This Episode: "Shabbat Derech Eretz – A Path Home to Common Decency" What does it mean to live with Derech Eretz, the Jewish value of common decency? This week's sermon explores its deep significance—from the Talmud to modern-day Israel and even the current state of global discourse. Rabbi [Name] reflects on:
It's official, common decency is dead. The Olympics opening ceremonies demonstrated that. More on how terrible Kamala is.
Can traveling with family turn into a logistical nightmare or an unforgettable adventure? Cynthia chimes in from the airport preparing to embark on a whirlwind journey sharing her excitement and the challenges of planning a family trip. We lighten the mood with amusing stories about surprise phone calls and impromptu celebrations, and Rick adds his unique humor to the mix, making for a truly engaging start to our episode. The conversation takes a nostalgic turn as we explore the emotional ties between music and family, with nods to Tupac Shakur and Freddie Mercury, and share tender moments spent with our mothers. What happens when a wedding photographer deletes all the photos because they weren't fed at the event? Our debate gets even funnier when Charlie joins in as we discuss professional courtesy, empathy, and common decency. We tackle the topic of generosity in social situations and share laugh-out-loud personal anecdotes and can't stop laughing when a humorous mishap occurs with Charlie's video feed. We round off the episode with reflections and definitions on joy, parenting, and the impact of early discipline, delivering insights on maintaining happiness amidst the world's negativity... In this episode, Bob'nJoyce speak out about stuff that irritates the heck out of them. Leaders too often fail to treat employees respectfully, especially at times that matter most. It is almost as if common sense and decency go out the window. Here is some of the stuff that irritates them: The arrogance of viewing employees as problems to be solved versus as the solution Letting people go without respect and compassion Those who manage and manipulate and call it leading Managers who ‘do to' versus ‘doing with' employees Get ready to get irritated!

“Grief doesn't experience time in a linear model. You don't just grow out of grief by dint of the days passing. That's why Lily doesn't have a typical arc - that eureka moment at the end”. Characters won't always align with your views, or do the things you expect of them. The most authentic and compelling characters are those who lead messy lives and make infuriating decisions - because that's real. Susannah Dickey is a Northern Irish writer and the author of Common Decency. In the novel we follow neighbours Lily and Siobhan, whose isolating and messy lives become entwined in a dark way. In this episode Susannah explores their lives, delving into issues of empathy, understanding and the hidden intimacies of modern existence. In this episode, you will learn: Why it's our job as writers to create deeply flawed and frustrating characters. Why characters don't always need to have a traditional narrative arc. Why it's ok for a reader to interpret your work in whichever way they want. Find out more about Susannah here. Your host is inkjockey founder Mark Heywood. Our first bonus! In this episode we discuss the South Park Pandemic Special (but really this is another meditation on the corona virus and the lockdown). This episode is also a first in RTF's attempt at remote recording (Luke was in Alberta and David was in Ontario). David was not at a location with a decent microphone, which is why you will hear a discrepancy in audio quality between our voices. However, we plan on rectifying that for the next actual episode, so fear not!

There appears to be a major disconnect when it comes to basic forms of communication. Are people truly listening, do people think of others when they speak and is it necessarily a good thing that we can potentially be connected to billions of people on social media? Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I felt inspired to talk about basic forms of communication we often neglect instead opting for the easier emoji or DM. I discuss a recent article I wrote for Medium entitled, What Happened to Common Decency? I also talk about and play a clip from a recent Sam Harris podcast where Sam talks with Tristan Harris about The Social Dilemma and the impact of social media on our culture. MLB continues its war against its players showing any personality at all. Recently it was Fernando Tatis Jr. attempting to actually enjoy the game, and now Trevor Bauer has made the mistake of once again having a personality. Why does baseball not know how to market controversy? The New York Mets have had to postpone their next 2 series as a result of positive Covid 19 tests in the clubhouse. Why do we now believe baseball will finish the season no matter what? And we conclude this episode with 2 different situations from the last few days. Whatever ever happened to common decency? There are things that everybody used to know & do...how to treat one another, how to talk to one another, how to be a good person..that hardly anyone knows & does anymore. That's the bad news. The good news is that if YOU know & do these things, you'll be rare. You'll stand out. Having good manners & being a decent person will help you dominate.

In 2017, after five years of running Take Root, an impossible-to-get-into 12 seat, Michelin-starred tasting menu only restaurant in Brooklyn, Elise Kornack and her wife Anna Hieronimous closed their doors and moved to 2 hours north to regroup, reconnect, get re-inspired and start again. Host Dana Cowin catches up with Kornack as she is on the verge of announcing her next project. Listen in to hear how this quintessentially original chef assesses the benefits and sacrifices of leaving NYC; how she dreams of dishes informed by narratives that only she knows; how the constant state of revision as an art student informs her cooking and her life. For just under an hour, immerse yourself in a world where trends don't matter, and following your truth is everything. Speaking Broadly is powered by Simplecast.
