Singer-songwriter-producer Gary Clark is my super-special guest for episode #300! We talk about his career, from his '80s band Danny Wilson (and their all-time great single Mary's Prayer) to his songwriting for the wonderful movie Sing Street (and the great single Drive It Like You Stole It). We get into the twists-and-turns of his life in music, his transition from performer to producer, how he learned to write in another singer's voice, the furious social media messages from strangers about the fact that he doesn't sing anymore, the coincidence & blessing of getting tapped by John Carney to write music for Sing Street, how writing for musicals differs from pop songs, the ways the Infinite Jukebox changes how (young) people discover music and how he stays current, the time he avoided meeting one of his musical heroes, how a Danny Wilson reunion got derailed by Nanny McPhee, and much more! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal
This week the gang asks hard questions. Is Brie Larson right for Captain Marvel? Why do we love John Carney movies so much? Can family horror movies appeal to all ages? Did director Bryan Singer alter the purpose of the X-Men allegory? What will it take to bring back the Looney Tunes? AND...What would a movie love child between David Lynch, John Carpenter, and Nicolas Winding Refn look like? Music Selection for the week: Drive It Like You Stole It - written for the Sing Street Original Soundtrack (2016), The Children of the Dawn - written by Johan Johannsson for the film Mandy (2018). This week the gang spoils: Predators (2010), Don Jon (2013), IT (2017) and the original book IT. FISH OUT OF WATER - Pastor David Rathel - July 8, 2018. REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE James 1:6-8 6the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. James 1:14-17 14but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 16Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. REMEMBER WHAT YOU NEED. Galatians 5:16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Psalm 73:16-17 16When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply 17till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny. Luke 10:41-42 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed--or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT. 1 Samuel 17:47 All the people gathered here will know that the Lord doesn’t need swords or spears to save people. The battle belongs to the Lord, Ephesians 5:15-20 15See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 1 Peter 5:6-8 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
