What happens when a 20-year Navy veteran with a passion for global cuisine decides to trade her military uniform for an apron? Amy Knight's journey from Naval Officer to owner of Flour Power Cooking Studios reveals the unexpected parallels between naval leadership and culinary education.(1:05) Amy has created a vibrant community space where cooking becomes a vehicle for confidence-building, memory-making, and even community service. "I just love watching the wheels turning," she shares, describing the moment when a child realizes they can create something delicious from scratch. Her weekly classes serve preschoolers through teens, while popular family cooking sessions regularly sell out, offering parents and children the chance to bond over homemade pasta or chicken piccata without worrying about kitchen cleanup.(18:42) Knight's global travels during her naval career exposed her to cuisines that transformed her palate. These experiences inform the diverse cooking classes she now offers, including adult "Sip and Stir" BYOB workshops featuring international themes and Iron Chef-style competitions that often benefit local charities. The studio also hosts corporate team-building events that Knight describes as opportunities for colleagues to "duke it out in the kitchen" while developing collaborative skills. What truly sets Flour Power apart is its commitment to service, mirroring Knight's military background. The studio's annual "Lasagna-thon" produces dozens of meals donated to community members in need, while also teaching young people that cooking can be a form of giving back. As Amy prepares for summer camps, she remains focused on creating opportunities that blend culinary skills with community connection. (33:50) And later in the show, we ask our resident wine expert Catherine Montest if 'rosé all day' is still a thing. Plus Ryan Peters dishes up a Pasta alla Vodka that rivals any restaurant meal. This episode is a multi-course of culinary delight. Support the showLiked the episode? We'd love a coffee!

Sent us text! We would love to hear from you! The phrase, “float like a butterfly….sting like a bee”, is touted as the second most recognized saying in the modern world, courtesy of Drew Bundini Brown and espoused publicly by his protégé, Muhammad Ali. Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida was touted as the Cradle of Naval Aviation to legions of Navy pilots for almost seventy years. This indoctrination into this specialized branch of the U.S. military is unique to the piloting world, and perhaps best illustrated in the blockbuster movie, “An Officer and a Gentlemen”. Even though the filmmakers took great literary license in making a compelling video by skewing reality, they managed to capture some of the essential elements of the experience faced by Dr. Paul and Commander Drew. What is a Poopie? The short answer is, “the lowest form of life known to man”, that is according to our U.S. Marine Corps drill instructors. As a Poopie, long before he became Commander Drew, this somewhat carefree native New Yorker was molded into a Naval Officer who stood ramrod straight and learned to pay particular attention to detail in all aspects of life. One of the most interesting aspects of water survival training is the ability to extricate oneself from a submerged aircraft. The Dilbert Dunker for fixed wing airplanes and its close cousin, the helo-Dunker for helicopters, are the contraptions used for this lifesaving training, a maneuver which no one ever wants to do in real life. At the completion of Navy Aviation Officer Candidate School and official commissioning as a Navy Ensign, it was common practice to present one's Marine Corps Drill Instructor with a single silver dollar as an expression of gratitude for the life-changing training provided by this unrelenting task master. Commander Drew's transformation was so dramatic he, give his Drill Instructor not one, but two silver dollars; one for himself and another in the memory of his father, long before Drew-senior came up with his famous quote. After becoming a Naval Officer, actual flight school became another type of initial training, that could be as tough as what had been done on the ground. This “boot camp in the air” was significantly tougher than the indoctrination from the drill instructors on dry land. This was particularly true for those who had no prior flying experience. The intensity of the flight training required combinations of intellect, toughness and perseverance, all of which would be rigorously tested before flying solo….and most especially in preparation for the ultimate test of a new Navy Pilot…..landing on a floating ship at sea, which was the culmination of everything that had been done leading up to this seminal event.

Experiencing 7 transfers & multiple IUI's nearly 3 1/2 decades ago, while aLSP enduring treatment both in the U.S. and in the Philippines, Sue Johnston's story is remarkable. You'll learn about the impact RESOLVE has had in her life, “RESOLVE was my lifeline.” Many of us can relate to how much fertility treatments can suck the life out of us. I hope you're inspired by Sue's story. May we continue to navigate life's detours while holding onto grief and joy at the same time.Learn more about Sue below! Connect with her at the infertilityadvocate.com.Sue's Bio: My name is Sue Johnston and I met my husband, a U.S. Naval Officer in 1984. We were married on May 3,1986. My husband Bob and I struggled for nearly a decade to have our one and only child, who was born on May 1, 1994. The Navy didn't make infertility treatment any easier either. We moved 14 times in the first 12 years of our marriage and Bob was frequently deployed overseas... often for 6 months at a time. We even had a 2-1/2-year tour in the Philippines in the midst of our battle with infertility.Although I didn't choose to have infertility, I eventually turned my pain into purpose after learning how to embrace my resolution. I am passionate about supporting RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association because the people I met through this organization were my lifeline when I was in the thick of my infertility battle. Since then, I have worn almost every “volunteer hat” for RESOLVE. I have been actively involved in RESOLVE's FederalAdvocacy Day State for 10 years in many leadership roles. I am the co-Founder of the Detroit, MI Walk of Hope and have helped extend it to a statewide event. I lead local and national RESOLVE support groups both virtually and in person. In January of 2021, I started my Pregnancy and Parenting After Infertility Support Group (PAIGES). In 2022, I created a monthly PAIGES PLAYGROUP where moms and their miracle babies can get together to socialize with each other. One of my favorite past time activities is to create custom designed nursery paintings for all members of my general infertility support group who have made it to the other side of infertility. Douglas P. Horne joins us to discuss his 2 volume book. Deception, Intrigue, and the Road to War (Vol. 1 of 2)Did President Franklin D. Roosevelt have foreknowledge of the attack---and did he (and his senior military leadership) then withhold that knowledge from his overseas commanders in Hawaii?Douglas P. Horne, a 1974 Cum Laude graduate of The Ohio State University who majored in history, and author of the five-volume work "Inside the Assassination Records Review Board" (about the U.S. Government's medical cover-up of the JFK assassination), has put his 40 years of combined military-and-civilian service to the Federal Government to good use in studying the 1945-46 Congressional Investigation into the Pearl Harbor attack; a little-known 1946 U.S. Government report containing key evidence about the attack; and the most recent Revisionist works about Pearl Harbor, to produce a grand "new synthesis" which answers the persistent question: "Did FDR know about the Pearl Harbor attack before it took place?" A former U.S. Naval Officer who spent 14 years working in four different Navy jobs at Pearl Harbor, and a Japanophile who has always been fascinated by the Imperial Japanese Navy, Horne has applied his own Navy job experience, and his understanding of how the government operates, to a plethora of data about the Pearl Harbor attack, to produce a work of high tension and drama that attempts to deal honestly with the most significant foreign policy event in America's 20th century history. About Christopher Seifert:Chris Seifert, founder of Enabling Empowerment, is a dynamic leader dedicated to transforming organizational leadership and team performance. With 20+ years in manufacturing operations and strategic advisory, he empowers leaders through innovative strategies. At Enabling Empowerment, Chris combats micromanagement with training and coaching that foster creativity, ownership, and shared leadership. His achievements include leading a renewable energy company's growth from $450M to $1B, boosting production by 200%, and delivering $300M in EBITDA improvements. He also founded an Operational Excellence Practice at Wilson Perumal and is a decorated Naval Officer. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Christopher Seifert discuss:Decision-making as a teachable skillMicromanagement and poor decision systemsThe seven-step decision-making frameworkDecision rights based on competenceDecision-making and employee engagement Key Takeaways:Implementing a structured decision-making framework allows leaders to respond effectively to both strategic and emergency situations, scaling the level of rigor based on urgency and risk.Leaders often become micromanagers not because of arrogance or distrust, but because they are stuck in a cycle where their team relies on them for every decision, leading to burnout and inefficiency.Organizations that grant decision-making authority based on demonstrated competence rather than rank create a more effective leadership structure, allowing better decisions at every level.Employee engagement increases when individuals feel they have a real impact on decisions, and leaders can foster this by involving their teams in the decision-making process rather than simply handing down directives. "Few organizations I've come across deliberately improve decision-making as a skill for their leaders. They leave it to chance, hoping they make more good decisions than bad and the bad ones don't wreck the company.” — Christopher Seifert Connect with Christopher Seifert: Website: https://enablingempowerment.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@EnablingEmpowermentLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christopherseifert/ & https://www.linkedin.com/company/enabling-empowerment/ See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/X (Twitter): https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Hanz Jimuel AlvarezAudio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. What does it mean to empower your team to make good decisions? Chris Seifert tells Kevin that empowerment is more than a buzzword, it requires leaders to build both the competence and confidence of their team. Chris shares his decision-making framework designed to address two critical organizational issues: poor root cause analysis and ineffective decision-making in complex environments. Through real-world examples, Chris reveals how clear "decision rights" can transform organizations, empowering teams while enabling leaders to focus on strategic priorities. He also shares that it's important to document the decision-making process to prevent hindsight bias or the curse of knowledge. Welcome to the Real Estate Investing School Podcast! On today's episode, host Joe Jensen had the pleasure of speaking with active duty naval officer, Kelsey Ingalls about the importance of emotional connection in real estate investing. Kelsey emphasizes the significance of understanding the emotional attachment homeowners have to their properties. She shares her experience of writing a heartfelt letter when purchasing her first home, which potentially impacted the seller's decision. Kelsey highlights the value of having a personal touch and connection when selling or buying a property. As a single mom, she prefers selling to someone she can relate to or help. It's not just about the numbers, but also about the emotional aspect. Some key takeaways to look for: 1️⃣ Remember the personal touch: In real estate, it's easy to solely focus on the numbers. However, don't forget the emotional connection homeowners have to their properties. In 2024 Nate Byrne went from presenting the weather to making the news when he acknowledged live on air that he was experiencing a panic attack. Keeping cool under pressure is a skill Nate developed in his first career as a Naval Officer, and perhaps also from his days as a go-go dancer in a Perth nightclub.
In his early twenties, Dave never really felt like he wanted the same things that everyone else wanted out of relationships. During that time he was mostly single and would find himself breaking off relationships after a few months, before they got serious so nobody got hurt too badly. He wasn't really wanting to find "the one" even though that's what it seemed like he was supposed to be doing. In his mid-twenties he started finding communities that were at the intersections of sex-positivity, neo-tantra, and polyamory. The support of these various different intentional communities opened Dave's world up to a completely different way of forming relationships and connections. Today, while Dave identifies as a solo polyamorous person, he is much more focused on creating healthy intentional communities that support learning, living and loving authentically as the imperfect humans we all are. Dave Booda is a writer, musician and social entrepreneur. He is the co-founder of IntimacyFest and hosts The Darkness Experiment. He has led over 450 workshops on connection, touch and relationships and has consulted for and facilitated experiences for companies, communities, retreats, festivals, conferences, birthday parties, weddings, funerals, and gatherings of all kinds — with the intention to inspire authenticity, connection and group cohesion. He has published over 200 essays for boodaism.com and played over 1000 shows as a touring singer/songwriter. He is a former Naval Officer and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, currently serving on the board of directors for the Foundation for Intentional Community while living in rural San Diego, California. The pirates that exist in our imagination are not just any pirates. Violent sea-raiding has occurred in most parts of the world throughout history, but our popular stereotype of pirates has been defined by one historical moment: the period from the 1660s to the 1730s, the so-called "golden age of piracy." The Caribbean and American colonies of Britain, France, Spain, and the Netherlands—where piracy surged across these decades—are the main theater for buccaneering, but this is a global story. From London, Paris, and Amsterdam to Curaçao, Port Royal, Tortuga, and Charleston, from Ireland and the Mediterranean to Madagascar and India, from the Arabian Gulf to the Pacific Ocean. Familiar characters like Drake, Morgan, Blackbeard, Bonny and Read, Henry Every, and Captain Kidd all feature here, but so too will the less well-known figures from the history of piracy, their crew-members, shipmates, and their confederates ashore; the men and women whose transatlantic lives were bound up with the rise and fall of piracy. To explore this story is today's guest, Richard Blakemore, author of “Enemies of All: The Rise and Fall of the Golden Age of Piracy.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you find a message that is consistent over time, through times of ease and times of challenge, and at each challenge in the real world this message is validated, reinforced, and found to be correct — is that a message you need to pay attention to?Since the Houthi joined a second front with the Gazans against Israel by attacking international shipping in the Red Sea and its approaches, the US Navy has led the international response and has been engaged in continuous combat operations facing almost all anti-ship weapons that any navy would expect to face in 2024.The experience in the Red Sea is validating the consistent messages about fleet size and requirements voiced by our guest this week on Midrats — a consistent guest since 2010 — Bryan McGrath, Commander, USN (Ret.).SummaryIn this conversation, Sal, Mark, and Bryan McGrath discuss the ongoing attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea by the Houthis, who are clients of Iran. They also talk about the performance of the US Navy in protecting commercial shipping, the investments made in the Navy, and improvements and challenges in the US Navy. The conversation then shifts to the development of directed energy weapons and the challenges in integrating them into the fleet. They also discuss the importance of multi-mission platforms and the need for single-mission platforms in certain situations. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the presence and deterrence mission of submarines and the need for VLS reload capabilities on DDGs. McGrath highlighted the positive changes in the fleet's material condition and combat systems, as well as the increased investment in training and spare parts. However, he also expressed concerns about the extended deployments and the strain it puts on ships and crews. McGrath emphasized the need for a larger Navy, particularly in terms of aircraft carriers, to meet the demands of global operations. He also discussed the challenges in the shipbuilding industry and the importance of stability and additional shipyards.Sound Bites"It is time to bring systems to see that allow us to economically engage civilizations that can out-produce us""There's been three straight budgets now that have funded spare parts significantly higher than I have seen them since I was in command."Chapters00:00: Introduction02:04: Ongoing Attacks on International Shipping in the Red Sea04:07: Performance of the Fleet in the Red Sea07:10: The Potential of Directed Energy Weapons09:40: Challenges in Integrating New Technology12:14: The Need for More VLS Tubes and Single-Mission Platforms16:13: The Role of Submarines in Naval Power21:53: Deterrence in the South China Sea26:43: Presence and Deterrence with the USS Georgia30:20: Rearming DDGs and the Importance of VLS33:36: Improvements in Shipyards and Material Conditions41:18: The Need for More Aircraft Carriers48:00: The Impact of Extended Deployments54:35: The Importance of Spare Parts58:58: Challenges of the Constellation Class01:00:09: The Importance of Stability and Additional ShipyardsBryan is the founding Managing Director of The FerryBridge Group LLC (FBG), a niche consultancy specializing in naval and national security issues including national and military strategy, strategic planning, executive communications, strategic communications, and emerging technologies. In this week's episode we talk to runner and Naval Office, Paul Johnson about:The logistics of running across the United StatesRaising money for Team Red, White and BlueFueling for 3,000 miles in 52 days (and change)In 2018 Naval Officer Paul Johnson went on his first deployment overseas to Spain. While it led to amazing opportunities, it was a difficult tour that weighed heavily on him and his fellow Sailors. His next duty station took him to San Diego in 2021, and once removed from the constant stressful environment of his first deployment, he began noticing the issues he had been dealing with, like persistent sleep issues, anxiety, and depression. He had been using alcohol as a coping mechanism, but his narrative began shifting in 2022, when a Marine friend asked Paul to train and run the Marine Corps Marathon. He trained for months, and they both ended up finishing the marathon in under 3 hours, and receiving their Boston Qualifier. During this time, he realized how much running helped him cope with the anxiety/depression symptoms he was experiencing. In January 2023, with a move to the East Coast, he started a run streak. This quickly evolved into entering the ultra scene, running 100 mile races by April 2023. Running was his therapy, and he found release and escape in a positive way. This year (2024), he tackled the TransCon, running 3,000 miles from California to New York to raise awareness & funds for mental health issues facing veterans through Team Red White and Blue, which exists to enrich the lives of veterans by providing opportunities to build a healthier lifestyle. Please note that this podcast is created strictly for educational purposes and should never be used for medical diagnosis and treatment.***Keep up with Paul Johnson:IG: @pauijohnsonYT: @pauijohnsonWebsite/Donate to Team RWB: www.pauljohnson.run Mentioned:Sports Nutrition Education ProgramBoston Athletic Assn. How might the philosophies of the classical Greeks apply to today's AI technologies? Does the concept of a virtuous life translate into the development and use of artificial intelligence? Given their belief in the value of seeking knowledge as a pathway to virtue, how might this principle apply to the creation of AI systems that learn and evolve? Plato introduces the four cardinal virtues of wisdom, courage, justice and temperance in Book 4 of "The Republic" and Aristotle expands them and explains how to make them practical in "The Nicomachean Ethics. How can these virtues be integrated into the design and operational principles of AI systems to ensure they contribute positively to society? The Greeks faced numerous ethical dilemmas that tested their principles. Can you discuss a modern ethical dilemma in AI that may involve a young Naval Officer's leadership and decision making, and how applying a classical Greek approach to ethics might offer a path to resolving it? Dr. Joe Thomas serves as the Director, VADM James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the US Naval Academy. A retired Marine, he served previously as the Class of 1961 Professor of Leadership Education at USNA and as Director, MajGen John A. Lejeune Leadership Institute at Marine Corps University. In addition, he's taught at the University of Notre Dame, University of Maryland, George Washington University and the National Outdoor Leadership School. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the MBA application deadlines and interview releases for this season. Interview invites continue for some top MBA programs, but we are getting towards the end of the interview window and closer to round 2 'decision weeks'. Speaking of decisions, CMU / Tepper is releasing its final Round 2 decisions this week. On Wednesday of this week, Clear Admit will be hosting an AMA live chat with NYU / Stern, signups are here: https://canyuama Graham highlighted two recently published admissions tips focused on the interview process (unusual interview practices and post-interview protocol), as we are now deep into the interview season for Round 2 candidates. Graham then highlighted two Real Numbers posts from Clear Admit, which focused on average GMAT scores and average GRE scores of top MBA programs based in the United States. Stanford and Harvard top the list for best GMAT scores, but Yale tops the list for GRE scores. Graham then mentioned two Real Humans Alumni pieces, the first two in this series for this season. Featured are alums from Chicago / Booth working at Citi, and IESE working at Allianz. Graham highlighted a Friday's from the Frontline story that focused on NYU / Stern's efforts on impact investing. That led to a brief discussion on the efficacy of batteries used in electric vehicles and mobile phones. And finally, Graham noted a recently published podcast where he interviewed J.R. McGrath at CMU / Tepper; they discussed all the different types of MBA offerings that are now available. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is a first generation college grad who went on to complete a BS in Chemical Engineering, and then to serve in the Navy as a Nuclear Power School instructor. We like their overall profile, but think they should try to take the GRE one more time. This week's second MBA candidate is being sponsored by their firm to do the MBA. They are seeking a one-year MBA program, so they can return to work soonest. We wonder whether they might be better served by also considering some of the leading two-year MBA programs. The final MBA candidate for this week has several offers, and is debating between Michigan / Ross with a $150,000 scholarship, Berkeley / Haas with a $100,000 scholarship, or MIT / Sloan with a $75,000 scholarship. They are from Europe and seeking a career in tech, or consulting, preferably on the west coast. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!
Marcus is an intentional husband, father, and founder of A Long Legacy Capital. Following a 21 year career as a Naval Officer, he leveraged his nearly two decades of real estate investing experience to continue a life of service to educate and bring opportunity to others.Main point:After over two decades in the military, why did you become a full time real estate investor? Were there lessons from the military that have translated to your real estate investing journey? Why should those that are busy professionals or not interested in being an active investor consider passive investing in real estate? What do you or your team do that you believe makes you different from others in the same profession? What are the first steps someone should take if they are interested in passively investing and understanding if these investments are a good fit for them. A lot of these are focused around benefits to or relationship with passive investors, but I am happy to discuss any other questions that you think would be useful for your audience including communication, systems, processes, etc.Connect with Marcus Long:https://alonglegacy.com/connect/marcus@alonglegacy.comhttps://www.facebook.com/marcus.longhttps://www.instagram.com/marcus.l.long/https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcus-long-22278391/https://alonglegacy.com/
We're going deep with Democratic candidates on the primary ballot for Congress and for the California State Assembly. Gil Cisneros is running to replace a retiring Grace Napolitano for CA 31 in the San Gabriel Valley. And local businessman and Swing Left organizer Steve Pierson is running for the 44th Assembly district in California.Gil is a former Naval Officer who served previously in California's 39th district and as Under Secretary of Defense in the Biden Administration. Gil and his wife won $266 million dollars in California's Mega Millions Lottery. They have put the windfall to wonderful use, setting up scholarship funds across the San Gabriel Valley. We talk to Gil about the great hypothetical question, “What would I do if I won the lottery?” And his ability to stay that course once dream became reality. We ask him why he left the Republican Party in 2008, we discuss the issues that concern his district like immigration, homelessness, transportation, and the environment. Gil is eager to get to work advocating for veterans, gun safety reform, economic opportunity for working families, climate action, defending women's rights and furthering the diversity programs he credits with his own pathway to success.Steve Pierson came to politics very naturally. His father worked on The Great Society in the LBJ administration. Steve took a detour into the entertainment industry, but after the election of Trump he spearheaded Swing Left, a grassroots organizational effort to flip purple districts blue.Steve's assembly district will cover much of the East San Fernando Valley and he has already travelled to Sacramento to meet with members, build relationships and discuss future legislation that could best serve his district. Steve tells us that California's state house super majority allows them to make groundbreaking laws that serve as models for the country in clean energy, transportation, gun safety and health care. Steve looks forward to using his skills as an organizer and his background in entertainment to build strong teams and work towards passing CalCare – California's Medicare for All Plan — taking climate action, addressing our homeless crisis and ensuring that those seeking treatment get the support they need.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Archie on Brit Box and Still on Apple +.Californians!
