Last fall, actor-writers Ellen Haun and Dru Johnston were hustling to get their health insurance sorted out for 2023. To qualify for insurance through the actor's union, SAG-AFTRA, Ellen would have to book a little more work — doable, but not a sure bet. So they came up with a plan: crowdfund a bunch of money to make a short film, starring Ellen … called “Ellen Needs Insurance,” of course. It worked! And the movie, a 13-minute comedy, is terrific. Ellen and Dru sat down with us to go over how they made the whole thing happen, and how this year's Hollywood strikes changed their perspectives. Here's a transcript of this episode.ALSO: Hey, it's the BEST time to support this show with a donation. Thanks to NewsMatch, any gift you make, up to $1,000, will be doubled. Mission to Zyxx is one of my favorite and highly bingeable podcasts. It’s a sci-fi audio drama (although very much a comedy) about a ragtag crew of space adventurers ranging from humans to aliens to robots. The actors are all improvisers. Every story and every line of dialogue is made up on the spot, but when layered with stereo soundscapes and effects, it sounds like they are worldbuilding on the fly. The show has made me LOL many times with its sly references to established sci-fi franchises, and I’m happy to share it with you. Here is the Mission to Zyxx site for Episode 202: The New Norm [ft. Dru Johnston] with the cast list and other details. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Meet Kate Zelensky! This episode was a freakin’ dream, recorded live onstage at this year’s Baltimore Improv Festival. Kate spent many prolific years at The Upright Citizens Brigade before Baltimore Improv Group was lucky to work with her. She tells us how she went from a music theater performer to an in-demand UCB improv teacher - plus serves up some celebrity dish. Let’s just say she and a famous Gossip Girl actress are living parallel lives. She also brought fellow UCB performers Don Fanelli, Dru Johnston, and Tim Martin to join us. And we finally got BIG Artistic Director and former UCB-er Jenn Withers on the show! It gets better with BIG guests Michael Quinn and Brian Leonard. Improv by one-time troupe: Balls: A Balls Class.
Comedian and bad impersonator Dru Johnston joins the show for a discussion about things that flow, how would Wes Andersen eat a Reese's, and what does it REALLY mean that the Milennium Falcon made the Kessel Run in under 12.8 Parsecs? Dru Johnston (The Chris Gethard Show, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) was living off a daily supply of coffee, pizza and beer his first three months of living in New York, as he slowly drained his savings and put all of his effort into winning a short play competition. He lost. We chat about how his anger over early rejections eventually led to a creatively satisfying year long project and we go into depth about the setbacks with our old sketch show, Sketches From an Italian Restaurant: A Billy Joel Sketch Show. We talk to comedian Dru Johnston about EVOLUTION. How did he get interested in it? How much of it is getting mad at creationists? Why DO people get passionate about creationism? What happened to the neanderthals? What books are good to read about this stuff? AND MORE! Plus Anthony talks about the Fijian dish Kokoda, and Will abhors the process of condemning tropes in TV/movies just because they have a cool label.
We welcome you to this episode by way of revealing the mystery that is "Baby Cut" carrots. You're welcome. Dru Johnston (The Chris Gethard Show) is in the guest star chair this week, and he and Sharon lead with the nuances of making faces at babies. Dru then talls of his experience of moving to NYC...and making only double digits to begin with. Then he digs back a little further to discuss his time as a housepainter, as well as his proficiency at getting rid of beehives on the job. Because, you know, a bee sting sure Hertz!

The Sequel Machine recruits amazing comedy writers to write the sequels for film's biggest franchises one page at a time. The catch is, the writers only get to read the page before theirs in a round-robin, exquisite corpse style. The end result is a hilarious, twisted, and as coherent as any misguided Hollywood sequel. This time, we set our sights on television's most anticipated finale: The Last Ten Pages of Breaking Bad. Starring Tim Martin as Walter White and Josh Ruben as Jesse Pinkman with Lauren Adams, Adam Bozarth, Carl Foreman, Jr., Anna Rubanova, and Brett White Written by (in page order): Adam Bozarth, Mike Scollins, Laura Willcox, Brett White, Dru Johnston, Michael Hartney, Anna Rubanova, Aaron Burdette, Mike Still, and Matt Little. Then later, we'll chat with a person who would literally die without their coffee, Richard B. Clicky. As always, we'll look into the week's headlines and top twitter trends, and, of course, we'll be paid another visit from our good friend and the tech columnist at Parade Magazine, Gadget Guru Dermitt Countertopp. All that and more, plus music from the Foo Fighters, this week on America Won't Shut Up!
