Längs floden Isonzo (Soča), i gränslandet mellan nordöstra Italien och dåvarande Österrike-Ungern (i dag främst västra Slovenien), utspelade sig några av första världskrigets mest brutala och utdragna strider.Den italienske överbefälhavaren Luigi Cadorna drev gång på gång sina soldater mot väl befästa höjder i en terräng som gynnade försvararen – och kom senare att bli ihågkommen som en av militärhistoriens mest hänsynslösa generaler.I dagens avsnitt av Militärhistoriepodden diskuterar idéhistorikern Peter Bennesved och professor i historia Martin Hårdstedt Italiens inträde i första världskriget och de inledande striderna längs Isonzofronten.När kriget bröt ut 1914 förklarade Italien sig neutralt, trots att landet ingick i Trippelalliansen med Tyskland och Österrike-Ungern. Men en växande italiensk nationalism – och tanken på att samla ”italienskt” territorium under en och samma stat – gjorde det allt mer lockande att byta sida och ansluta sig till ententen (främst Storbritannien, Frankrike och Ryssland). Särskilt hägrade områden som Sydtyrolen och Trieste, som fortfarande tillhörde Österrike-Ungern men som det italienska ledarskapet ansåg borde bli italienska.I april 1915 slöts därför Londonfördraget, ett hemligt avtal där ententemakterna lovade Italien territoriella vinster om landet gick in i kriget på deras sida. Italien förband sig att agera snabbt – men mobiliseringen drog ut på tiden. När de italienska styrkorna väl sattes in under Cadornas ledning inleddes offensiverna vid Isonzo i juni 1915.Den italienska armén var dock knappast rustad för det som väntade. Terrängen var karg, brant och oförlåtande. Att gräva ned sig i bergssluttningarna var ofta nästintill omöjligt, och anfallen tvingades fram i smala passager där försvararna kunde koncentrera sin eld. Fördröjningarna gav dessutom Österrike-Ungern tid att förstärka sina försvarsställningar i höjdlägena. Kombinationen av bristande förberedelser, starka försvarslinjer och en terräng som kanaliserade anfallen skapade en obarmhärtig spiral av förluster – och Cadornas utpräglat offensiva doktrin gjorde priset ännu högre.Det skulle krävas tolv stora slag vid Isonzo mellan 1915 och 1917 innan fronten slutligen bröts – till ett ohyggligt pris i människoliv. Here Isaac is not giving us a technique for moral improvement. He is unveiling an icon. Behind his austere language of toil and Scripture and withdrawal stands a single, luminous vision: the human heart being slowly remade into the dwelling place of God. Asceticism is not a set of behaviors aimed at self mastery. It is the patient clearing of space so that the Trinity may come to rest within us. Everything Isaac names flows from this one mystery. He begins with what looks like a chain of practices. Bodily toil guards purity. Scripture sustains the toil. Hope and fear steady the soul. Prayer and withdrawal from men protect the heart. But Isaac is not describing a ladder that climbs upward by human effort. He is describing how the soul is held open until it can be seized by the Spirit. These disciplines do not save. They keep us available for salvation. They prevent the heart from sealing itself against grace. This is why Isaac speaks so soberly about the Scriptures. Until the Comforter has come and taken up His dwelling in the depths of the person we need the written word to keep us from drifting into forgetfulness and fantasy. The Scriptures are not information. They are a form of remembrance. They press the shape of Christ into the memory of the heart so that when our mind is scattered and the passions begin to speak their lies we are not carried away from our true homeland. But Isaac also knows that even Scripture is provisional. There comes a moment when the teaching no longer comes from without but from within. When the Spirit penetrates the noetic powers of the soul the heart itself becomes the book. The same Word who once spoke in letters now speaks in fire. This is not a rejection of Scripture but its fulfillment. The written Gospel gives way to the living Christ engraved upon the heart. Here we touch the heart of Eastern Christian mysticism. Salvation is not merely a verdict. It is a transformation of perception. The center of knowing shifts. The ego no longer stands as the interpreter of reality. The Spirit becomes the teacher. And because this teaching comes from God Himself it is not lost. It does not evaporate under distraction or suffering. It remains as a living memory of communion. Isaac then strikes at something that terrifies the ego. He distinguishes between good thoughts and a good heart. We are accustomed to judging ourselves by the surface weather of the mind. We watch our thoughts rise and fall like waves and imagine that our worth before God is decided by their movement. Isaac says this is an illusion. Thoughts come and go like sea winds. They stir the waters but they do not constitute the depths. The heart is the foundation. It is the place where we truly consent or refuse. A person may be flooded with thoughts and yet remain rooted in God. Another may have refined ideas and yet be inwardly turned toward self. What matters is not the agitation of the surface but the direction of the ground beneath it. This is a devastating word for the controlling ego. We want to manage our thoughts. We want to produce holiness by technique. We want to ensure our standing before God by monitoring every inner movement. Isaac tells us that this entire project is misguided. If judgment were passed on every thought we would be condemned and justified a thousand times a day. That is not how God sees us. God looks at the heart. He looks at where we have placed our deepest trust. And here the abyss opens. To let go of the ego is not to become passive or vague. It is to cease making ourselves the measure of reality. It is to fall into the love of God without conditions. The heart that consents to this fall becomes a foundation of peace even while the mind continues to be stirred by many winds. This is why the saints can live in such freedom. They are no longer organized around self protection. They have entrusted themselves to the Paschal mystery. For Isaac all of this is Christological. The Spirit who teaches the heart is the Spirit poured out by the crucified and risen Lord. The abyss into which we fall is the same abyss into which Christ descended in His self emptying love. To enter this path is to be drawn into the very life of the Trinity. We are no longer managing ourselves toward virtue. We are being re created from within by divine love. This is the beauty of the ascetical mystical tradition of the East. It does not offer self improvement. It offers transfiguration. It does not promise control. It invites surrender. It does not measure us by the turbulence of our thoughts but by the quiet yes of the heart. Isaac shows us a humanity that has learned to rest in God even while the winds still blow. A humanity no longer driven by fear or fantasy but grounded in the living presence of the Spirit. This is what we have become in Christ. ¿Imaginas vivir un verano eterno? Esa es la sensación al descubrir un gran número de obras del artista británico David Hockney. Sus cuadros retratando la vida en las casas de la siempre soleada California y, sobre todo, sus piscinas, como elemento central, son el reflejo de un nuevo modo de vivir que se hizo paso en la era pop: el del hedonismo como una forma de estar en el mundo. Así, a través de las aguas cristalinas de las piscinas y todo lo que ocurría a su alrededor, David Hockney supo documentar una época y mostrar realidades todavía disidentes, como las del colectivo LGTBIQ+ y las del desarrollo de la conciencia feminista. Para darnos un chapuzón sumergiéndonos en las estampas veraniegas de David Hockney, charlamos con Clara Marcellán, conservadora de pintura moderna del museo. Vi mötte Sebastian Stagh för första gången då han som 12-åring ställde upp vid vårt lopp i Långbro Park. Våra ögon drogs direkt till den lilla pojken som sprang oerhört vackert och fort. Den gången blev det 35.28 och senare samma år slog han Europarekord när han löpte 5000m på 17.10. En talang av sällan skådat slag. Sedan följde några jobbiga år med skador och stor tillväxt och vi såg inte den där lilla talangen blomma ut på riktigt samma sätt som vi anade. Men i år, vid 17 års ålder har Sebastian äntligen kommit ut på andra sidan. Efter att ha fått kontinuitet i löpningen för första gången på många år löpte Sebastian Lidingöloppets fruktade sista 10k på 31.11,  näst snabbast någonsin. Därefter följde ett silver vid terräng-SM i juniorklass och nu förra veckan en mycket fin 28e plats vid Terräng-EM i Portugal. Vi fick ett samtal med Sebastian där han berättade om de jobbiga åren och hur han nu blickar fram för att för första gången kunna förvalta den stora talang vi såg där i Långbro-loopen.  John har styrt bilen mot Skåne och gör sig redo för ett nyårslopp på Köpenhamns gator. Efter överträningssymptom i mitten av sommaren kom han tillbaka starkare än någonsin och slog personbästa på favoritdistansen 3000m hinder (8.17.01). Efter stolpe ut vad gällde kval till VM i friidrott gjorde Simon en kort spontansatsning mot Lidingöloppets 30 kilometer. Längre än vad han någonsin tidigare hade sprungit. Resultatet blev mycket snabba 1.38.08 och mersmak efter ett väl disponerat lopp. Några veckor senare följde terräng-SM där Simon i överlägsen stil segrade på herrarnas långa bana (10k). Med dessa resultat har han nu kvalificerat sig till Terräng-EM som går av stapeln 14 december i Portugal. Simon som representerar Djurgården Friidrott sedan ett år tillbaka är fostrad i IFK Lidingö och berättar om fördelarna med att ha vuxit upp på ön ur ett löpperspektiv. But President Donald Trump lashed out at Democrats and other political opponents, charging without evidence that their “rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we're seeing in our country today.” Trump and other top officials are now promising a broad crackdown on the free speech of his opponents.U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that she would “absolutely target” protesters engaging in what she called “hate speech.”Critics, including many conservatives, have noted that the first amendment right to speech does not include an exception for “hate speech” and that it would be unconstitutional to target people for their overheated rhetoric.“So-called ‘hate speech' is free speech,” asserted Aaron Terr in an essay for the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), where he is director of public advocacy. FIRE is a national group that advocates for and defends free speech.“The ever looming threat is that when people are in power, they always are going to have this motivation to crack down on speech that threatens their hold on power, that opposes their policies and their views,” Terr told The Vermont Conversation.“I'm worried that (Trump) is setting the stage for a broader government crackdown on speech on the administration's political opponents and that will really only make the situation worse,” said Terr. “The remedy that our First Amendment envisions for speech that we find potentially harmful is not to suppress it. FIRE recently published the results of a survey of college students that revealed that in 2020, about 1 in 5 students said it was "ever acceptable to use violence" to stop a speaker. That number has since risen to 1 in 3 students, a 50% increase in the level of support for political violence among college students over the last 5 years.“Free speech isn't a conservative or liberal value. It's a constitutional value. It's a check on power," Terr said. "We need the First Amendment because power brings with it the temptation to silence dissent. That's human nature. And the beauty of free speech is it ensures that no single person or administration can declare by fiat what's true or false, what's right or wrong and make it illegal to disagree. And wherever you fall politically, you have a stake in being free from that kind of authoritarian control. My biggest worry is that people are just losing faith in the importance of free speech.”
