Gethard is finally taking a well-earned, long-overdue vacation. But we're not leaving you hanging. Instead, we brought in a past caller/frenemy of the show who knows exactly what makes a great Beautiful/Anonymous call. If you've been around for a while, you know Parade Girl as the caller who somehow cracked our phone system and sparked a whole saga. This week, she ends up chatting with a caller who shares her and Gethard's birthday and who gives her a taste of her own medicine. Geth'll be back next week. In the meantime, enjoy this weird little break from our regularly scheduled programming. “I did have a murderer's fingers in my mouth a couple times.” That's how this week's caller kicks things off, setting the tone for an episode filled with random and often darkly hilarious stories. He and Gethard play a morbid round of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, share their mutual appreciation for one of Jersey youths' greatest and most time-honored traditions, and dive into tales of a frugal exhibitionist and a road trip that nearly ended in disaster. A skydiver who swears she's not an adrenaline junkie calls to talk with Gethard about the joys of plummeting to earth from 13,000 feet. She's got 500 jumps under her belt, and only one of them has ended in two broken feet. She shares an action-movie-worthy story that is possibly the most harrowing tale we've ever heard on the show. Fair warning, this one's intense. But it's also fun and–if you're looking for an excuse to do something that scares you–inspiring, too. Our friend and regular guest Chris Gethard takes an episodes to deliver his quibbles with some flaws in Watchmen. You know Chris from his stand-up comedy, from his podcast Beautiful/Anonymous, from his TV show The Chris Gethard Show. The Milksops know him from their days together at the UCB Theatre in NYC. We had invited Chris -- who is a passionate comics fan -- to be our guest on a regular episode. Gethard suggested that he be on a special episode since he worrites his takes would detract from a regular coverage. We started calling this a "rebuttal" episode. Although Gethard takes pains to underline that he loves and admires the comic, and even agrees that it is one of the very best created, he doesn't think that means it's above criticism, and so he takes the book to task. We get into lots of ideas: the defensiveness of Watchmen fans, the pirate comic, the portrayal of the alien, the idea that the much-maligned Zack Snyder film had a better ending and other things! It's a passionate discussion and an interesting one! ---------- Subscribe to support and to get bonus monthly episodes at screwitpodcasts.com Join our Discord -- invite link also at screwitpodcasts.com
This week's call kicks off with a tour of the caller's room as she describes the objects around her. This week's caller shares an incredible story about receiving a tough phone call regarding her ex-husband and the lessons it taught her about the broken justice system. We're over the hump with 100 episodes in the tank, so we brought writer, comedian, and friend of the pod, John Trowbridge, back on to discuss the time in his youth that he was convinced he alone needed to save the world from the British Illuminati. We also do a VERY important data dump before we chat aura points, Maggie being in shy dog mode, the perks of being a Farmer's Dog sugarbaby, Caroline's decision to pursue access to her legacy Neopets account, and James going fat head mode trying to find a hat that will fit his head. If you're in NYC, be sure to check out John's extremely funny one man show, The Greatest Solo Show of All Time, Saturday October 12th, 7pm at the UCB Theatre. The Milksops welcome TV writer / podcaster / comics creator James III to the show! You may know James as a co-creator / co-star of the Netflix sketch show The Astronomy Club, or from his podcast Black Men Can't Jump In Hollywood. Friends from the UCB Theatre in NYC, the Milksops and James dive into another issue of the Bendis/Bagley run of Ultimate Spider-Man. This is issue #5, which takes place immediately after the death of Uncle Ben. It's a terrific issue which puts all of the strengths of this run (emotional nuance, going slow, emotional art) to great effect. We also talk to James about how he became a comics fan. Even though he started reading after he was in his 20s, he made up for lost time, going through a ton of issues. We also talk about his comic Junior! He's doing a Kickstarter to fund another batch of issues and if you'd like you can support it below. Jen Spyra has worked in nearly every kind of comedy there is: penning stories for The Onion, writing skits and one-liners as a staff writer for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, contributing pieces to The New Yorker and McSweeney's, and taking the stage for improv at UCB Theatre in Manhattan. Her story comes from her first short story collection, Big Time. It's performed by Mary Lynn Rajskub. She's someone with so many fun credits it's hard to pick: 24, Mr. Show, Punch Drunk Love and, who could forget, her break-out role as the voice of the Female Radio Caller from The Truth About Cats and Dogs? She read this story at Sketchfest in San Francisco. This episode includes a conversation with host Aparna Nancherla and Jen Spyra.

In this episode, you'll hear Averi Israel and I talk about contributing to life's bigger story, working through self-doubt, and why it's important to have teammates. Averi is an actress and writer/director from the eight cities that raised her. She moved to New York City to pursue a Film Studies degree from Columbia University, where she graduated as the recipient of the Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts. Shortly after, she moved to South Korea where she spent a season as the set designer for Seoul Shakespeare Company. Now back in NYC, she is cultivating a career at the intersection of art and activism, having trained as an actor at Circle in the Square, the UCB Theatre, as well as with the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, and performed at The Tank, The New Ohio, and Columbia University. As a writer, her pieces for stage and film consist primarily of historical fiction works and those that incorporate elements of Afrofuturism, seeking to root our contemporary moment in both its foundational past and visionary future. You can follow Averi on Instagram @averiisrael. Be sure to check out her website, averiisrael.com. If you're enjoying the show, please take a minute to rate and review.
