Am 25. Februar 1985 haben Tears for Fears ihr zweites Album "Songs From The Big Chair" veröffentlicht, auf dem mit "Shout" oder "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" große Hits sind. Schon mit ihrem Debütalbum "The Hurting" haben Tears for Fears Anfang der 80er-Jahre die Charts erobert und es in ihrer britischen Heimat bis auf Platz 1 geschafft. Mit "Songs From The Big Chair" haben es Roland Orzabal und Curt Smith dann auch bei uns in Deutschland an die Spitze der Charts geschafft. Mit "Shout", "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" und "Head Over Heels" sind auch einige ihrer größten Hits auf dem Album "Songs From The Big Chair". It sounds like summer, but the lyrics address serious issues in a way that made it a timeless classic. “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears became a worldwide smash hit when it was released in 1985, during the Cold War between the US and Russia, but over time it has proven itself to be evergreen on a range of concerns, from the environment to dictatorship. It has been covered by over 140 artists, including Don Henley, who inspired the shimmery sound of the song with his hit, "The Boys Of Summer." And, incredibly, it was written at the last minute, the very last song to make it to the band's second album. Welcome to this episode of "Behind the Melody," where we delve into the captivating story behind the iconic song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears, released in 1985.Join us as we uncover the serendipitous origins and extraordinary journey of this timeless track. The tale begins in the picturesque city of Bath, located in the enchanting South West of England. Here, two young teenagers, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, crossed paths and embarked on a remarkable musical adventure. At the time, Roland Orzabal found himself amidst a profound spiritual quest. It was during this introspective period that fate intervened, leading him to encounter "The Primal Scream," a book penned by renowned American psychotherapist Arthur Janov. Janov's work revolved around a therapeutic approach that aimed to unleash the deep-seated childhood traumas through cries, screams, and primal expressions. Thus, the genesis of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" was born from this shared pursuit of personal healing and growth. This transformative track would go on to capture the hearts of millions worldwide, resonating with its introspective lyrics and captivating melodies.

Tears For Fears publicaron su segundo álbum, ‘Songs From The Big Chair’, en febrero de 1985.
Marc Jordan continues to challenge and reinvent himself as a songwriter, composer, and vocalist. On his latest album release, titled “Waiting For The Sun To Rise”, the Juno award winning artist has penned several original songs, blended with a few new arrangements of some well-known tunes, such as the Tears For Fears classic “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”. The album contains a harmonious blend of jazz, folk, and pop. Lyrically, Marc reflects on his time living in the American West, thoughts about the problems our world is facing, loneliness sparked by the pandemic, and the joys of the natural world. This is arguably his most introspective collection of songs in his vast canon of work, backed by lush strings from the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, with collaborations from Lou Pomanti and Randy Brecker. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome back to the show, Marc Jordan.

In this episode, we take a deep dive into some classic songs with Steve Baltin, author of Anthems We Love: 29 Iconic Artists on the Hit Songs That Shaped Our Lives. Baltin got his stories directly from the artists who recorded the songs, conducting interviews with the likes of Joe Perry, Brad Delson of Linkin' Park, and even had a contribution from the famously elusive Tom Waits. As fellow song investigators, we're very impressed with Baltin's work. He does a great job tracing the trajectory of these songs and putting them into context. He posits, for instance, that "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" would be too smart for 2022 but was perfect for 1985, the "golden era of political songwriting."Baltin also explains his process - how he got these artists and songwriters to open up about their songs.Get the Book! https://www.songfacts.com/https://www.facebook.com/songfactshttps://twitter.com/Songfactshttp://pantheonpodcasts.com/https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O'Flanaganhttps://twitter.com/ofe1818https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/corey@songfacts.com Songfacts Podcast Spotify Playlisthttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IThMW5yB8XnFh5cS2gTxR?si=KAhiqWRcSIy5uxb2sZPFTA This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.

Curt Smith joins Behind the Setlist to talk about Tears for Fears' new album, The Tipping Point, his excitement to play the new songs live, how to choose songs for concerts, his opinion on encores and much more. Smith and bandmate Roland Orzabal first hit the charts in the U.K. in 1982 with "Mad World." For a time, the band performed the song to sound like the darker Gary Jules and Michael Andrews version that was featured on the soundtrack to the film Donnie Darko in 2001. They have also performed the song acoustically and with a full choir. "To me, it's the strength of a song that allows it to be done in many different ways. If the song doesn't fall flat, then obviously the song itself is the strength, it's not necessarily the recording," says Smith. To his point, "Mad World" has been covered by Adam Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, Pentatonix, Susan Boyle, Brandi Carlile and most recently Demi Lovato. These days, "Mad World" is one of a handful of tracks from the group's 1983 debut, The Hurting, that's certain to played on the band's current U.S. tour and the U.K. tour that begins in July. "Change," "Pale Shelter" and "Suffer the Children" are setlist standards. So are "Break It Down Again" from 1993's Elemental and two songs from 1989's The Seeds of Love: "Woman in Chains" and "Sowing the Seeds of Love." Fans will also hear the band's hits from the group's 1985 smash album, Songs From The Big Chair: "Shout," "Head Over Heals/Broken" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World." In years past, Tears for Fears usually covered Radiohead's "Creep" in their sets. That may not make the final cut as the band makes room for new songs. As for new material, Smith is excited to find out how they transfer to the stage. "The fun part of the first week to two weeks of touring is, you may not have got it right," he says. "And you may want to change things for the first bunch of shows. So until you get in front of an audience, you don't know 100% what's going to work." They gained major steam in the US with their sophomore album Songs From the Big Chair, which included the hit singles “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” and “Head Over Heels.” Featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Songs From the Big Chair reached #1 and was certified five times Platinum by the RIAA. Tears for Fears' follow-up single “Sowing the Seeds of Love” was another massive hit, but Curt departed the group not long after. Following a couple of albums with Orzabal at the helm, the duo reunited for the Everybody Loves a Happy Ending album in 2004. Now, after a long wait of 17 years, Roland and Curt have just released their seventh studio album The Tipping Point, and are embarking on a major tour. Even as they bring us new music, their legacy is well-established as one of the most unique and influential British groups to emerge in the last few decades. Their songs have been covered or sampled by Gary Jules, Adam Lambert, Lorde, Kanye West, Drake, and many others. And, in 2021, the band was honored with the Outstanding Song Collection honor at the Ivor Novello Awards in London.
Everybody Wants To Rule The World! Tears For Fears singer and co-founder Curt Smith talks with Paul about TFF's characteristically epic new album, The Tipping Point, and virtuoso "genre fluid" musician Robert Glasper stops by to go through his own monumental offering, Black Radio III. And RSD's Carrie Colliton stops by for some timely Record Store Day News. Go to RecordStoreDay.com for up-to-the-minute updates. Sponsored by Tito's Handmade Vodka, and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery. From the earliest beginnings of 1983's The Hurting to the band's huge 1985 LP Songs From The Big Chair, Tears For Fears songs captured sadness, ambition, pain - confessional levels of emotional honesty. All this conveyed with the magic touch of songwriters who were also not afraid to get weird. But as the 80s music scene spun out of control so did Tears For Fears, famously making one of the longest, most tortuous and expensive albums in history in The Seeds Of Love. The aim was flawlessness but the result was a flawed masterpiece, an album that literally exhausted the band (at least as a duo) until a reformation 15 years later. When they came back in 2004 with Everyone Loves a Happy Ending. Roland Orzabal describes that record as “Seeds Of Love's little brother…it was lighter but the songs lacked the emotional honesty”. But now Tears For Fears are back. In this streaming age of always-on music, when most artists are terrified to take a month off, let alone a year, let alone 18 years, Tears For Fears return with brand new album The Tipping Point. It comes at a time when their music is back in vogue (a gentle groundswell has seen more than 140 versions of Everybody Wants To Rule The World dropped onto streaming services in the past decade or so, urging the song towards one billion streams). The duo has always navigated an intriguing relationship, often distanced from each other. Yet the two troubled souls that grew up together have come to accept each other as brothers, musically speaking. In the band's early years, it was Curt who sang the hits and appeared to be the frontman and pop star of the band, with Roland the “backroom boy” (his words). Yet Roland stepped forth to dominate on The Seeds Of Love, his “musical Tourette's” allowed to run amok. But a recent revelation is how Roland has learned to listen to Curt again. "When I saw were he was coming from the process of making the record became a joy. I felt the wind was blowing in our favour". It is Curt's self-critical leanings that stepped-in on The Tipping Point, firstly to throw out most of a batch of songs written in a ‘songwriting camp' (a fascinating and tragicomic scenario in a way given the songs written as a duo). Second, to step forward once again as co-lead singer and a co-writer in Tears For Fears as a duo, not a committee of songwriters. The band is even enjoying their time in the music industry's fickle spotlight together once again - from Zoom calls to accepting the Ivor's lifetime award. “Curt and I have both got something to say and they are very different things”. And here's the rub. Tears For Fears are back into the culture at a time when many of their 80s peers, from Duran Duran to Gary Numan to Aha, are in fine form, making great records and sounding fabulous live too. After the two years we've spent at home, the contagion we now need is to see legends playing truly great pop songs with smiles on their faces. Forget 2004, the happy ending is happening right now and long may it last. Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)
4 Jahre Produktionszeit, 1 Million Pfund Kosten.

Congratulations to TFF for making a great new record in 2021. But this exciting hit (#5 UK, #2 USA) was my first meeting with Tears For Fears. Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith had already had hits like “Shout” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”. But this was something different! Daisy Chute chats with me about how we sowed many seeds of love in the studio and why it's impossible to park if you have a gig at the London Oriental Mandarin Hotel! Let's drop some acid and listen to how we made this record with a little help from Guy Barker and Kate St. John. As Curt said, “We wanted to do something more colourful, something that sounded big and warm. You cannot get that from machines. You only get that with real musicians and real players." It’s a podcast about big things today! Our guest is Josh Rogin, author of Chaos Under Heaven: Trump, Xi, and the Battle for the Twenty-First Century. He takes us through our predicament with that big, menacing foe in the Far East; and warns against the current American tendency to allow the conflict with China to become another stage for political squabbling amongst ourselves. He and the hosts contemplate and debate the extent to which Cold War parallels are precise and our thinking ought be revised. The fellas also get into big spending and the progressive distaste for majorities, big or small. Music from this week’s podcast: Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Weezer
Their StoryIn one of most uniquely offbeat collaborations of the year, celebrated pop singer Blake Lewis joins forces with EDM's most accomplished drummer producer KJ Sawka to form The Private Language, a new project that combines cutting edge electropop, indie dance and future funk into one irresistible package. Their boldly unexpected debut single is a fresh take on the Tears For Fears smash ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World', spinning the classic songcraft of the original with state of the art modernist production. Released on Earth Day, the video for the song conveys an impassioned plea for peace and unity in these uncertain times. Watch it here.Sawka and Lewis originally crossed paths amid the vibrant Seattle hip hop and rave scene, becoming fast friends and fellow musical travelers. Lewis rose to fame as one of the most distinctive and memorable finalists on American Idol, winning over the world with his charismatic singing, beatboxing and scat-singing. He went to collaborate with OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder, releasing a top 10 US album and a #1 Billboard dance track. Sawka has been playing drums and producing for over 28 years, working with artists such as Illenium, BT, Amon Tobin, Andy Summers of the Police and dubstep supergroup Destroid. He is most known as the incendiary drummer for drum n' bass legends Pendulum.Covering this classic 1980s hit has been a unique experience for both artists, as Sawka explains: "This song was a real challenge to reinterpret. It's such an iconic song with a unique pulse. we slowed it down to 100 BPM and that changed it enough for an original feel and it fit our style and vibes. We then continued to produce in the way we do our original music by diving deep into the drum parts, vocal and keyboard effects and live bass. It was so much fun to create.” For his part, Lewis was drawn to the song for both artistic and sentimental reasons, as he relates “From their brilliant production, grooves and soaring vocal talent, I've been such a fan of Tears For Fears ever since I could remember. Any time one of their songs came on the radio as a kid in the 80's I couldn't help myself from singing at the top of my lungs. I love how melodic their music is in every way. After being amazed seeing them in concert two years ago, I knew I wanted to try taking a stab at one of their songs. Deciding to cover this song in particular, was tricky for us. Keeping the artistic integrity of the original while trying to make it your own is such a challenge but we had so much fun shaping this song in our style and think we nailed it.”“I came up with the idea for the music video during the height of the pandemic. Seeing so much tragedy and the impact we make on the environment I wanted to say something about it. I've always been mindful about the environment I'm in and human rights issues, from standing with the Dakota Tribes protesting at Standing Rock and performing charity concerts on Earth Day. I want to unite people with our music and message. The earth was here long before us and will remain long after. We need to be kind to each other, ourselves and Mother Nature. Chris Merrick Hughes is perhaps best known for producing Tears for Fears' "Songs from the Big Chair," and co-writing their "Everybody Wants To Rule The World." We talk about his early days as drummer/producer for Adam and The Ants, and his later work on Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant, and Steve Reich's music. Chris' musicality reaches into minimalism and far beyond, and his take on electronica is completely fascinating.

On this version of the Word On the Street Podcast we talk with my good friend and former band mate KJ Sawka. KJ and I got together for the second livestream version of the podcast! I love doing this as a livestream! It did not take us long to get into a great philosophical conversation about what kind of mindset you need to have for success in music. KJ shared a lot about his philosophy and work ethic and how it came about. I also asked KJ to tell us about his experience being a part of the Seattle music community and what he has learned now that he does not live inside of it anymore. KJ also told us about his plans with Blake Lewis and their band The Private Language. We could not end the interview section for the Tears For Fears season better than with our final interviewee; Mr Ian Stanley - band member from the beginning and part of the key creative unit behind Songs From The Big Chair. Chatting to Ian was a great thrill and we cover the early part of the decade here from initial meeting to working on The Hurting with diversions into the making of both Everybody Wants To Rule The World and Shout. *Many thanks to Carole and, especially, David Bates who was instrumental in getting me the chat with Ian. And thanks to Ian for a brilliantly enjoyable conversation.Enjoy (part 2 to follow soon) x* still kicking myself that I didn't ask Ian why Shout didn't have the ! it clearly needed,,,
This weeks episode discusses "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears For Fears, as covered by Jamison Parker for Punk Goes 80's

Lista musical: SoulChef Ft. Who should we talk about this week, Doctor? Yes. Exactly. Robbie finally gets his wish, and the guys discuss (translated: listen to Robbie discuss) the record-breaking phenomenon that is Dr. Who. But first! Geeks of the Week! Jay tried unsuccessfully to Skype in from a car flying through mid-town Atlanta, but his Marvel movie marathon would have been very exciting. Art watched a Sinbad (not the comedian) movie starring Tom Baker (Dr. Who the 4th), and Robbie introduced us to some very cool yacht rock dulcimer music played by his almost cousin? Then Robbie amazes all with his unscripted knowledge of all things Dr. Who, the long-running BBC sci-fi masterpiece theater. SHOW NOTES "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad" Trailer with Tom Baker. Ted Yoder- and Curt Smith, lead singer of Tears for Fears- do an amazing version of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World."
In this episode, we talk to Holly Lewis about her book the The Politics of Everybody: Feminism, Queer Theory and Marxism at the Intersection (http://bit.ly/LewisEverybody). We talk about what Holly means when she argues that “the politics of the fragment should be replaced by an inclusive politics of everybody.” In our interview, we explore some of the debates and discussions around homonormativity, how to build a trans-inclusive feminism, and queer theory. We revisit social reproduction theory and talk about its implications for gender politics and trans liberation. Holly gives a clear overview about the different theoretical approaches to gender politics in Marxism, queer theory and feminist theory and explores the connections between them. Before that, we talk to LA teacher and strike leader Gillian Russom about the LA teachers’ strike. And in our intro, we talk about the controversy surrounding this year’s Women’s March. Most of our discussions barely scratched the surface, so we’ve got lots and lots of links for this episode. Bill Hughes tells Kieran Cuddihy all about Tears For Fears' classic 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World'.
Jennifer Briney is host of the super fascinating Congressional Dish podcast. On it she breaks down congressional bills and gives you the dirty laundry hidden deep inside. It's not pretty. Before she found her success, she was floating through unsuccessful sales positions and jobs with zero responsibility. And that's the story she tells us in this episode. I couldn't help myself so Jennifer and I also discuss the presidential election, politics, and misleading news outlets. It's an educational and entertaining conversation. Here’s what Jennifer and I discuss: How she took a job as a salesperson just so she could get health insurance after college. She became a successful leasing agent for her apartment complex. How everything went downhill when she was promoted. Why she knew she could sell what she believed in. How she transitioned into another sales position and failed. What she thought about the product she was trying to sell. It's an odd one. How she want 9 months without selling one of these products. What she would've done differently, if she had to do it all over again. How she thought she was a gifted salesperson until she went through this experience. The critical lessons she learned from this selling disaster. Why she called many of her "no responsibility" jobs "just for cashies." How she started her political podcast, The Congressional Dish. What motivates her to keep reading these congressional bills, and why she feels compelled to keep at it. What she distrusts about our mainstream media outlets. What drives media coverage today, and how it changes the way we believe what's going on (and this isn't conspiracy theory or right or left-wing arguments). How congress stuffs bills with horrible laws that can't be taken out, and why you never hear about it. Wh she wishes traditional journalists would pick up and steal her stories. What influences the TV news channels coverage choices and how it effects you. How native advertising is ruining journalism. Why she turns down ads on her podcast. How she struggles when stating her opinions on the show. But she always disclosures her opinion if she shares. Why this election helped shed a light on the corruption in both major parties. How the Republicans and Democrats control the elections and won't let outside candidates on stage for debates. How our power as citizens is in congress, not the president. And why you need to vote for house and senate candidates. Enjoy the show: Everybody Wants To Rule The World
In days gone by, it might have been considered a backward step to go from adapting Shakespeare to adapting a video game. Not anymore – with this week’s guest Justin Kurzel having done just that. Following his hugely well-received take on Macbeth, the Australian director has now turned his attention to Assassin’s Creed - a movie based on the video game franchise that has sold well over 100 million copies worldwide. Both projects are scored by his brother Jed, and both star one of the actors of the moment, Michael Fassbender. In the 21st Century, our brief here on Soundtracking applies as much to games as it does to film. Not only is the Assassin’s Creed series fully scored by the likes of Jesper Kyd and Winifred Phillips, but one of the trailers features a cover of Everybody Wants To Rule The World by New Zealand vocal sensation, Lorde. They’re more than just hackathons, too - with big ideas about morality, science, history and fate driving the narrative. Plenty, then, for Justin to draw inspiration from when transforming the games into a cinematic experience …

Summer is fading, and fall is upon us. It’s truly my favorite season, as the evenings start to get that first chill in the air. My last podcast intro was very wordy — this one will be much less verbose. In an introspective mood and will let the music speak for itself. I'm hugely excited to finally be able to announce that I'm going to opening for Grammy-nominated DJ/producer Dave Aude at Fred and Jason's Halloweenie event in Los Angeles on October 25th, benefiting the Gay Men's Chorus of LA. We take a break from our regular schtick to bring you something special: Matt & Brett Love Comics! in association with Left Handed Radio present The Sequel Machine. The Sequel Machine recruits 24 writers to write the sequels for film’s biggest franchises, one page at a time. The catch: the writers only get to read the page before theirs in a round-robin, exquisite corpse style. The end result is hilarious, twisted, and about as coherent as any other misguided Hollywood sequel. This is Spider-Man 4. Written by: Brett White, Aaron Burdette, Frank Hejl, Anna Rubanova, Adam Bozarth, Jason Saenz, Taylor Moore, Dan Chamberlain, Beth Appel, Ben Stadler, Ari Scott, Kerry McGuire, Mike Scollins, Dru Johnston, Katey Healy-Wurzburg, John Freiler, Jon Bershad, Chris Schell, Chris Wilkes, Dave Bluvband, Kevin Hines, Will Hines, Erik Tanouye, and Matt Little. Performed live by: Jeremy Bent, Adam Bozarth, Aaron Burdette, Dan Chamberlain, Matt Little, Taylor Moore, Cathryn Mudon, Anna Rubanova, and Brett White. Featuring Michael Hartney as esoteric comic-book comedian Nicky Gold. See the next Sequel Machine show live: Dark Knight 4. UCB Theater East, 3rd Street & Avenue A. Thursday, September 6th, 7:30 PM.
