The PI Launchpad: Expanding the base of potential Principal Investigators across space sciences by Erika Hamden et al. on Monday 10 October The PI Launchpad attempts to provide an entry level explanation of the process of space mission development for new Principal Investigators (PIs). In particular, PI launchpad has a focus on building teams, making partnerships, and science concept maturity for a space mission concept, not necessarily technical or engineering practices. Here we briefly summarize the goals of the PI Launchpad workshops and present some results from the workshops held in 2019 and 2021. The workshop attempts to describe the current process of space mission development (i.e. space-based telescopes and instrument platforms, planetary missions of all types, etc.), covering a wide range of topics that a new PI may need to successfully develop a team and write a proposal. It is not designed to replace real experience but to provide an easily accessible resource for potential PIs who seek to learn more about what it takes to submit a space mission proposal, and what the first steps to take can be. The PI Launchpad was created in response to the high barrier to entry for early career or any scientist who is unfamiliar with mission design. These barriers have been outlined in several recent papers and reports, and are called out in recent space science Decadal reports. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.03769v1

In tech, there's a lot of pressure to keep things running smoothly. That makes even a small mistake or a brief outage seem disastrous. When people fail at something, they can experience many different emotions: Anger, regret, or even fear. In this episode of Compiler, Jen Krieger and 2019 TED Fellow Dr. Erika Hamden join us to discuss how we should handle failure, and how teams and individuals can benefit from processing it safely and effectively. Compiler is all about asking questions. What happens when a baby falcon meets a balloon telescope in an old Wild West town? An astrophysics animal adventure, of course! Erika Hamden is an astrophysicist who’s attempting to launch a space balloon telescope called FIREBall, an experiment to study distant galaxies. But her mission to the stratosphere leads her to wild nature, when a baby falcon falls out of its nest and onto the telescope. It turns out, launches don't always go as planned.  To learn more about Erika and FIREBall, listen to our bonus interview episode on Patreon! Dr. Erika Hamden is a professor of astrophysics at the University of Arizona. Her observational focus is on measuring and mapping diffuse hydrogen around galaxies and within star forming regions in our own galaxy. Her current projects include FIREBall, a UV balloon-borne telescope; KCRM, a spectrograph for the Keck telescope; and Hyperion, a UV space telescope she is currently developing. Her work is driven by a desire to know and understand more about the universe around us.  Hamden received a bachelor's from Harvard in 2006 and a PhD from Columbia in 2014, both in astrophysics. She has held an NSF Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellow and the R.A. and G.B. Millikan Prize Postdoctoral Fellow in Experimental Physics at the Caltech. She was awarded a Nancy Grace Roman Technology Fellowship for her detector work in 2016. She worked as a chef for a year before beginning grad school and has a serious yoga practice.   *** For Show Notes, Key Points, Contact Info, Resources Mentioned, & More on this episode please visit my website: EricGilbertWilliams.com. *** Feedback? This week we present stories from two people finding their boundaries with the wild world of animals. Part 1: Adam Selbst competes with tigers for the attention of his mother. Part 2: Weighed down by the burden of leadership as she supervises the construction of a telescope, Erika Hamden finds comfort in an unlikely spot. Adam Selbst is a writer and graphic designer from Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He hosts the monthly Big Irv’s Storytelling Roadshow and has been performing around NYC for the last 8 years. Adam lives in a bodega art collective with 64 other people and in his spare time he enjoys being slowly poisoned by an ancient, weird mold in his shower and throwing elaborate dinner parties. Erika Hamden is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Arizona. She develops UV detector technology, builds telescopes, and observes galaxies and hydrogen all over the universe. Her last project was a UV telescope that flew on a high altitude balloon. She is currently leading a team working on a proposal for a UV space telescope. When she isn't building or thinking about telescopes, she has a serious yoga practice, is learning to fly a plane, and loves hiking in the desert around Tucson. Before she went to grad school, Erika worked as a chef for a year. She is still really into eating. Erika is interested in sharing stories about how hardware gets built and the very human personalities that are behind scientific discoveries. Learn more about your ad choices. Dr.Erika Hamden is a TED fellow, Ph.D. Astrophysicist, and Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona who has been nominated by NASA for the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2019. Erika leads the team building FIREBALL, a project funded by NASA which is a large telescope that hangs from a giant balloon at the very edge of space and looks for clues on how our stars are created. Erika’s scientific endeavors have received close to $4 million in grant funding from partners like NASA and MSF. She got her A.B., in Astronomy & Astrophysics from Harvard, a Ph.D., in Astronomy from Colombia and did her Postdoctoral Fellow at California Institute of Technology.  Despite these achievements, Erika struggled early-on when she first attended college. She felt anxious and didn't quite fit into student life. She dropped out of MIT after a short attendance period and worked at a local bookstore for 1 year. Oddly enough, she thought that maybe she was one of those smart people that couldn't thrive in high-pressure situations. She finally gathered her courage to try her luck at college again and got into Harvard. She gave herself permission to not ace everything, but rather ease into it. Her willingness to try again led to a career as an astrophysicist and innovator. She shares that being at the edge of what's known, meaning, work to discover the unknown through cutting edge initiatives, has proved to teach her some of her most important lessons on failure and resilience. Scientists fail 90% of the time as they navigate uncharted paths and Erika's relationship to failure and resilience is fundamental in her success. In a candid discussion, she shares the ups and downs in her riveting journey to discover the universe. Tune in to get the full conversation and learn about: Launching telescopes into space FIREBALL project What it takes to stand at the edge of what's known How to deal with failure What role resilience plays in success Science at it's finest Leadership lessons How to manage a team Dealing with uncertainty Dr.Erika Hamden's biography: Dr.Erika Hamden is an astrophysicist. She studies the universe. She builds telescopes and spectrographs to observe (mostly) hydrogen in its faintest and most diffuse forms throughout our galaxy and the universe. Primarily in the ultraviolet, but sometimes the visible. She's leading a proposal for a Small Explorer class UV telescope called Hyperion. She's a professor at the University of Arizona. Erika’s scientific endeavors have received close to four million in grant funding from partners like NASA and MSF. Erika Hamden:  My family, I have four sisters. I am the second to last one, so there was a lot of us around. In some ways, that was nice because no one gets too much focused attention. I spent a lot of time reading. I was always trying to talk somebody into driving me to the bookstore or the library so I could get more books.
