The Hamden 9, as part of the town's bicentennial celebrations, continue the tradition of playing baseball by 1800s rules using period-accurate attire and equipment. For more on Hamden, NY's bicentennial celebration, head over to hamden1825.org. Send us a textThis is the second episode of the podcast in April, because... well, we just couldn't stop ourselves! Spring is here and it's time for many of us to start working on our gardens, if we haven't already. To give us all some tips and ideas, Ryan talked to two Master Gardeners who are also Master Composters, Diane Dynia and Wes Meeker. In addition, Matt spoke with Theresa McCabe, President of the Spring Glen Gardening Club and Lyn Baumgartner, the Beautification Coordinator for the Town of Hamden. Whether you're a new gardener or someone with more experience, we hope this episode inspires you and makes you curious to try some new things in your vegetable or flower garden, both this season and beyond.
Send us a textThis month we are celebrating National Poetry Month. In addition to our staff reading some of their favorite poems and our interview with Franz Douskey, the Hamden poet laureate, one of our patrons was kind enough to call in and read two of her original poems. We also have a fun little quiz segment entitled “Taylor or Edgar” in which Kacie read me a series of short excerpts and I had to guess whether it was written by Taylor Swift or Edgar Allan Poe. This has been a real labor of love for me and has turned out to be, I think, possibly my favorite episode that we've ever done. Of course, I was an English major so I'm a little biased, but I hope you enjoy it as well! - Mike

Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save life or to destroy it?” ~Luke 6:9 During the three months that Pastor Laura will be away on sabbatical, I have invited some friends to preach at FCC. This week, we welcome the Rev. Kathy Peters to the pulpit. Kathy is no stranger to Southington. She and her husband, Stanley, lived for many years in Plantsville. As she prepared for ministry at Yale Divinity School, Kathy was an active member of the Plantsville Congregational Church. Since finishing YDS, Kathy served as the Associate Pastor of the Spring Glen Church in Hamden, on the staff of the historic Connecticut Conference, and as the Pastor of the United Church of Chester. Kathy and Stanley tried to retire to Florida but missed New England too much, so they returned to Connecticut this year and joined FCC. I look forward to hearing from Kathy on Sunday!

The Light Gate welcomes guest: researcher and author, Frank C. Feschino Jr. Date: December 16, 2024 Episode: 086 Discussion: The Braxton County Monster (aka: The Flatwoods Virginia Monster incident) and The Flying Saucer Air Wars of 1952 (as chronicled in his book, Shoot Them Down!) Frank C. Feschino, Jr. is a graduate of the Paier College of Art in Hamden, Connecticut, where he studied illustration, commercial art, and photography. He was trained by several world-famous artists including Kenneth Davies, Rudolph Zallinger and John Massimino and earned his four-year Fine Arts diploma in 1981. Feschino later moved to Florida where he studied film and video production at Phillips Jr. College in Daytona Beach and was trained by Hollywood camera operator Rich Davis. In 1994, Frank graduated with an Associates Degree in Film and Video Production and a minor in Business. While visiting family in Braxton County in the early 1990s, Feschino became aware of the "Flatwoods Monster" UFO crash incident in Braxton County that occurred on September 12, 1952 and began to investigate it. This case reportedly involved a UFO and its alien occupant, a 12-foot-tall armor-clad being that crash-landed on a farm in Flatwoods and encountered a curious group of local townspeople shortly after. Subsequently, he began an in-depth investigation into this case, which lasted decades and reveals a massive UFO cover-up implemented by the United States government. After decades of research and investigating the case, Feschino wrote a groundbreaking book that chronicles his investigation into the famous "Flatwoods Monster" incident. It is titled, "The Braxton County Monster - The Cover-up of the Flatwoods Monster Revealed," which was later released into an "Updated and Revised" edition as his investigation continued and additional information obtained. Frank has guest appeared on many West Virginia television talk shows, TV news broadcasts and radio programs and was also featured in the first-ever "Flatwoods Monster" cover story and feature article of UFO Magazine. The author/illustrator and UFO investigator also appeared in an episode of "Monster Quest" on the HISTORY CHANNEL that featured the "Flatwoods Monster" and "Frametown Monster" incidents of 1952. Additionally, Feschino produced a documentary that he wrote, shot and narrated, which focuses on his investigation into the "Flatwoods Monster" case and appears on you tube. After spending decades in search of the truth, Frank C. Feschino, Jr. has become the genuine authority on the "Flatwoods Monster" incident and UFO events of September 12, 1952. Frank is also the author of the highly acclaimed book, “Shoot Them Down! The Flying Saucer Air Wars of 1952. Today, Frank Feschino, Jr. continues to be involved in UFO his research and currently resides in central Florida. Thanks to our listeners, we have travelled across the state during every time period to bring you vivid, fascinating stories from our state's history. Become a podcast subscriber to get notified every time there's a new episode! During this holiday season, it seemed like the perfect time to bring you the story of Connecticut's biggest toymaker! Of all the toys that are enshrined in the National Toy of Fame, two stand out as having solid Connecticut connections, the Cabbage Patch doll and the Erector Set. In this episode, we're going to find out how A.C. Gilbert, a Yale educated doctor, became a millionaire with an idea he got while riding the Metro North train from New Haven to New York City. His construction toy, the Erector Set, sold in the millions and helped to educate generations of scientists and engineers. He came up with dozens of best-selling toys that were all manufactured at his factory in New Haven, Connecticut. We'll also interview Walter Zawalich, Gilbert Trains Curator, at the Eli Whitney Museum about their holiday Gilbert train show. Co-host Patrick O'Sullivan will share his information on 1965's James Bond slot car toy that helped to push the company into closing. Much of today's information comes from the book The Man Who Changed How Boys and Toys Were Made, The Life and Times of A.C. Gilbert, the Man Who Saved Christmas by Bruce Watson and the website of the Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden, Connecticut. The Whitney Museum collects and studies the products and legacy of A.C. Wonder and strangeness commingle with the commonplace and universal in Danielle Chapman's “Trespassing with Tweens.” In a not-quite mirroring, a human mother and her children stand and watch together in awe as a great blue heron flaps in and feeds its two offspring. The pleasures found here are profound and multiple – the joys in seeing, in sharing an experience of seeing, in seeing with fresh eyes, and in being seen.Danielle Chapman is a poet, essayist, and lecturer in English at Yale University. Her most recent collection of poetry, Boxed Juice, was published in 2024 by Unbounded Edition Press. Her previous collection of poems, Delinquent Palaces, was published by Northwestern University Press in 2015, and her memoir, Holler: A Poet Among Patriots, was released by Unbound Edition Press in 2023. For several years, Chapman served as the Director of Literary Arts and Events for the City of Chicago, and she was also an editor at Poetry Magazine. She currently teaches Shakespeare and creative writing and lives in Hamden, Connecticut, with her family.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.We're pleased to offer Danielle Chapman's poem and invite you to subscribe to Pádraig's weekly Poetry Unbound Substack newsletter, read the Poetry Unbound book, or listen to past episodes of the podcast. I saw someone on TikTok ask (rather vulgarly) that we just have, for once, a week that is … precedented. And I mean, yes. Could we? Well, not this week. The shooting. The convention. The running mate. The president with COVID. The ominous election. And then Bob Newhart died, too. So we decided we need — and that you might need, too — an hour to figure out where to find hope even in the face of all this. Join us for Episode 6 in our seven-week series, Encountering Jesus Personally. In this week's episode, Lisa and Laura dive into the Gospel of John, focusing on the famous I AM statement, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” Each time we find Jesus saying, “I am,” He is giving us a glimpse into what He's like. He's revealing something about His character. If you have ever asked, “What should I do?” “What can I know?” or “What can I hope for?” this conversation is for you. Join Lisa and Laura as they unpack today's Scripture and apply it to our daily lives. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. John 14:6: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. John 14:1-6: “Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.” Deuteronomy 5:32: You shall walk in all the way which the Lord your God has commanded you. (ESV) Isaiah 30:21: Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. Isaiah 35:8: The prophet says, “a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way, the unclean shall not pass over it.” Jeremiah 6:16: Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask the ancient paths where the good way is, and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.” John 13:15: For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. John 14:9: He who has seen me has seen the Father. Hebrews 1:3: (Jesus) is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature. (ESV) Luke 15:19-20: “I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.” And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. Isaiah 43:1: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. Jesus is the way: In what situation is Jesus asking me, right now, to follow His example? Jesus is the truth: What is a concrete way I can learn a new truth about Jesus this week? Jesus is the life: What am I hoping for? Show mentions. John Bartunek, The Better Part: A Christ-Centered Resource for Personal Prayer “From ancient times philosophers have summed up the human condition as a quest to answer three fundamental queries: What should I do? What can I know? What can I hope for? Jesus Christ answers them all, not merely with doctrine, but with his very person. ‘I am the way' can translate into: What should you do? Follow me! Do what I have done. ‘I am the truth' means: What can you know? You can know everything, if only you know me. Knowing me, you know the truth; you know the secret behind the workings of the whole universe and the yearnings of the human heart. ‘I am the life' means: What can you hope for? In me, through me, you can hope for and expect the fullness of life that you long for, even though you may not be able to put that longing into words. “Christ is truly the living water that quenches every thirst. He is truly the light that scatters every kind of darkness. The quest of every man and woman to satisfy the heart's deepest needs is the quest to seek his face, and it leads either to Christ and the place he has prepared for us in heaven or to a dead end.” (John Bartunek, The Better Part: A Christ-Centered Resource for Personal Prayer. Hamden, CT: Circle Press, 2007, 936.) “Unfortunately, sin has obscured our capacity to know and follow the light of truth, and indeed, as the Apostle Paul realized, it has exchanged ‘the truth about God for a lie,' (Romans 1:25). By the Incarnation, the Word of God came to bring full light to man. In this regard, the Second Vatican Council says that it is ‘only in the mystery of the Word made flesh that the mystery of man truly becomes clear.'” (Saint John Paul II, Christ Reveals Man to Himself) Get your Isaiah 43:1 free printable.
