The Falcon Lake Incident occurred on May 20, 1967 and is considered one of Canada's best documented UFO cases. Stefan Michalak, an amateur geologist, was prospecting near Falcon Lake when he was startled by some nearby geese that suddenly flew up. It was at that point he saw two cigar-shaped objects in the sky. One of them landed on a flat rock, while the other stayed in the air for a few minutes before flying off. He approached it, could feel warm air, smell Sulphur, as well as hear muffled voices inside. When he called out to see whoever was inside needed help, the voices immediately stopped. The ship began to turn counter-clockwise, and he was struck in the chest by a blast of air or gas that pushed him back and set his shirt and hat on fire. He ripped off his burning clothes while the ship lifted up and flew away. Disoriented and nauseous, he stumbled through the forest until he eventually made it back to his motel. He was treated at a hospital for burns to his chest and stomach that later turned into raised sores in a grid-like pattern. And for weeks afterwards, he suffered from diarrhea, headaches, blackouts and weight loss. After it was investigated by several different government agencies, the official conclusion was that it was unexplained, and until the day that he died in 1999, Stefan never backed down or retracted his story.Did Stefan have an encounter with an alien ship or was it just a secret military vehicle? Hey there friends and weirdos! We've got another wild UFO story for you this week - the tale of Steve Michalak and his trip to Falcon Lake in what many call Canada's most well-documented UFO case of all time. What in the world did Steve witness that summer in 1967? Was it not of this Earth? Or perhaps more terrifying, was it actually a creation of someone on Earth? Also, what's the best thing you could smell like if you had to smell like that for, say, a year? We answer all this and more!
This week we talk about two lesser known UFO sightings. One incident, the craft was seen by countless witnesses, a lot of military involvement but still no answers as to what was seen that day. Falcon Lake was a smaller incident but left a lasting mark on the witness. Stefan believed he saw a military aircraft but most people believe he encountered an extraterrestrial aircraft. On this episode, Nik and Tom dive into the visceral details of the infamous Falcon Lake UFO Incident. The incident gained popularity in the early 90's thanks to being featured on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. However, in light of recent acknowledgement of the existence of UFOs granted by the US government, the incident presents a compelling encounter with the phenomenon that reflects the deeper implications of that reality. For over 50 years a revolving door of civilian and government investigators have attempted to provide an explanation for the Falcon Lake UFO Incident, yet it remains an enigma. What is known is that in 1967, just months prior to the other famous Canadian UFO event in Shag Harbour, a man stumbled out of the woods in rural Manitoba disoriented, vomiting, and badly burned. This wasn't a bonfire gone wrong or anything to do with alcohol however. The story this man told, and maintained until his death in 1999, was that he encountered a UFO, and got injured in the process. In this episode of Nighttime, Canadian UFO researcher Chris Rutkowksi shares details of the Falcon Lake event and in doing so explains why this event has remained such a major part of Canada's UFO story. The Falcon Lake UFO Files Link: https://news.umanitoba.ca/the-falcon-lake-ufo-files/ On May 20, 1967, something happened in the wilderness around Falcon Lake, Manitoba, that has never been adequately explained. Stefan Michalak, an amateur geologist who liked to prospect in the wilderness around Falcon Lake, said he had been examining a quartz vein about noon that day when he was startled by geese suddenly agitated by something nearby. He said he looked up to see two saucer-shaped flying objects overhead, one of which descended and appeared to land about 45 metres away. He spent the next half-hour sketching the object then got brave enough to walk towards it. However, the object took off suddenly with a blast of hot gas, burning Michalak in the process. Later, radioactive debris was found at the site by military and RCMP investigators. Neither the RCMP nor the Canadian Forces were able to explain the event. Chris Rutkowski (BSc/83, MEd/92), a prominent Canadian ufologist, will give a talk about this remarkable incident on November 7, 2019, at 7:00 pm, in Archives & Special Collections. Rutkowski will be joined by Stefan's son Stan Michalak, who was nine years old when his dad had this encounter. During the event, for the first time ever, Stefan's shirt and hat that were burned during the event will be on public display. The talk and presentation mark Rutkowski's donation to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections of his extensive personal collection and files on this case and other UFO sightings and related phenomena from across Canada. These include more than 20,000 separate UFO reports filed with various agencies since 1989, almost 10,000 Canadian government UFO documents, plus more than 1,000 books from Rutkowski's personal library on UFOs and related phenomena. The ClearSpace-1 mission, scheduled for launch in 2025, will cost €120m and will grab a single piece of junk. But the agency hopes the mission will pave the way for a wide-reaching clear-up operation, with Esa's director general calling for new rules that would compel those who launch satellites to take responsibility for removing them from orbit once they are retired from use. “Imagine how dangerous sailing the high seas would be if all the ships ever lost in history were still drifting on top of the water,” said Jan Wörner, Esa's director general. “That is the current situation in orbit, and it cannot be allowed to continue.” The target for ClearSpace-1 is a piece of junk called Vespa, which was left in an orbit around 800km above the Earth by ESA's Vega launcher in 2013. Vespa weighs 100kg – around the size of a small satellite – and was selected because it has a simple shape and sturdy construction, which make it unlikely to fragment when it is grabbed. The “chaser” ClearSpace space probe will be launched into the target orbit where it will track down Vespa, grab it using a quartet of robotic arms and drag it out of orbit, with Vespa and the chaser both burning up in the atmosphere on the way down to Earth. Stefan Michalak, an industrial mechanic, ventured out into the wilderness around Falcon Lake looking to prospect for quartz and silver. While Stefan was out he was startled to see two cigar shaped objects in the sky. One descended and landed on a flat rock. When the object landed, it took on the appearance of a disc rather than a cigar. Believing that the craft may have been a secret military vehicle, Stefan, for about 30 minutes, sketched what he was looking at. At one point he moved closer to the craft. When he reached out to touch it, the fingertips of the gloves he was wearing melted. The metallic craft began to turn counter-clockwise and blasted Stefan with hot gasses which blew him backwards and set both his shirt a cap on fire. On the afternoon of May 20, 1967 an amateur geologist, Stephen Michalak stumbled down the highway toward the Falcon Motor Inn in great distress. An RCMP highway patrol officer slowed down and observed Michalak hunched over and swaying but apparently trying to flag him down. After hearing Michalak tell a story and warning the officer to stay away from him because he had radiation poisoning, the officer determined he must have been drunk and drove off after Michalak declined help.Michalak staggered into the Motel front office breathing heavily and asking to see a doctor. Having no doctor available, Michalak rested in his hotel room, calling his wife, and saying there had been an accident, but there was nothing to worry about. The next day his wife and son met him at the bus terminal in Winnepeg where he was promptly driven to the hospital. Michalak would be forever perplexed about his physical condition.Something very strange happened to Steve Michalak in the spring of 1967 just north of Falcon Lake Manitoba for which no one is able to properly explain and today the incident, known as the Falcon Lake Incident is still unsolved. Was it a real UFO encounter, a secret US aircraft, a hoax or something else? This is a good one folks. Next we have the Falcon Lake UFO incident. What did Stephen Michalak (a name that Mike had much diffuculty with) see near Falcon Lake? One of the rare day time UFO sightings on Unsolved Mysteries. Finally we discuss the WOW signal (wwoowwwww)... This signal was basically transmitted from outter space and picked up by our technology here on earth. Many believe it is a signal sent from extraterrestrials.
