The Setting Trick: Conversations with World Class Bridge Players
Today's guest is bridge player turned burgeoning social media star Jason Hackett, also known as Prime Mutton. A frequent traveler, guinness reviewer, and 2019 Eurotransnational winner, Hackett and I had much to discuss. We talk about the strangest food he's tried during his travels, how he broke out on YouTube and Instagram, and his favorite bridge formats. Jason's mother Olivia introduced him and his twin brother to bridge at eleven years old. Though Jason does not discuss bridge much on his social media channels, he is a formidable opponent. He beat Boye Brogeland and Geir Helgemo in the Euro Juniors in 1994 and has represented England in the European Championships many times. Of bridge, he said “I just enjoy playing, it does not matter with whom.” You can read more about Jason in his recent Esquire feature. One of the perks of hosting the podcast is that we get to invite people who've influenced us to come on as guests, and in our world of teacher education, there are few people who've had more influence on us than Professor Trevor Mutton from the University of Oxford. Co-author of a huge number of articles and books that have shaped our thinking about how new teachers learn, we've been privileged to work with Trevor for a number of years. Now, we've managed to get him into the studio to discuss an article he's co-authored about Initial Teacher Education, whether we as a profession have a clear story to tell about how we educate new teachers, and why that matters. But the discussion ranges more widely than the article, looking at how teacher education policy in England has moved in a different direction from that in Wales, and chewing over some of the really tricky questions around what we believe about what it means to be a profession. The article we were talking about in the main discussion is: ‘Learning to think, perform and act with integrity: does teacher education have a signature pedagogy, and why does this matter?' by Clare Brooks, Joanna McIntyre and Trevor Mutton. The article mentioned by Trevor in something interesting is ‘Educative mentors? The role of classroom teachers in initial teacher education. A New Zealand study' by Helen Trevethan.----------------------------------------Recorded in studio B2.15 at Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cyncoed Campus on 6th November 2024.
Guided by the wise counsel of his granddaughter and his wife, Prescott Frontier Days' member Gary Steinmetz became involved in mutton bustin', where rodeo's youngest cowgirls and cowboys climb aboard and ride rambunctious sheep. Gary and PFD General Manager Jim Dewey Brown brought the program to the World's Oldest Rodeo® in 2022, to the delight of rodeo fans. Gary has been involved in various rodeo activities for quite some time: “I tried riding rough stock in the mid-west back in the 60s, and that wasn't going so well, so I became a rodeo clown and had a ball.” Gary also did... I'm so excited to introduce you to today's guest, Surabhi Venkatesh! Surabhi is a certified dog behaviour and nutrition coach based in India, and she founded Luchi and Mutton's after her own two rescue pups presented challenges that required her to look deeper, taking a whole dog - and whole human - approach. In this episode, we have a candid conversation about some of the challenges we have both faced with our own dogs, and all the complexities of being dog parents to complex dogs. We also talk about how meeting our dogs with radical empathy in their healing journeys, made us realise the need for approaching ourselves with that same level of empathy in our own healing journeys. If you have got a complex dog, and honestly even if you don't, I know you'll find value in hearing this. Surabhi shares her experience of studying with Sindhoor Pangal at BHARCS in Bangalore where she learned about asking the why of our dog's behaviours, and how to hold space for our dogs', and our own, big feelings. Oh my goodness, there are just so many nuggets in this chat, truthfully too many to list! Surabhi is such a wonderful human, and her approach to dogs is inspiring. We do touch on some aspects of nutrition and different cultural approaches to feeding our dogs, but we're saving a deep dive into that for a future episode. So, if there's something you'd like us to address when it comes to canine nutrition and how to best support your dog's health through food, let me know, and I'll make sure that we address it! 5-21-24 Tonight we're talking with Adam Bystrom, Josh Mahoney, Al Boyce and Josh Holbrook, members of the aptly-nicknamed 'Minnesota Mead Mafia'. Josh Holbrook has been home brewing for since 2011 and making mead since 2013. He discovered mead at his local homebrew club when a club member brought a bottle of an attempt at Curt Stock's Triple Berry Melomel. Clouds parted, angels sang, and Josh became obsessed with mead. Josh has won numerous medals for beer, cider and mead, including AMMA National Mead Maker of the Year in 2020, and a couple Best of Shows at competitions such as Minnesota Mashout and Hoppy Halloween. He is also a certified BJCP judge and mead judge as well as a novice beekeeper, and one of the organizers for Valkyries Horn Mead Competition. One of Josh's long term mead goals is to make mead with each of the 300+ varietal honeys found in the United States. He has 44 under his belt already and shows no signs of stopping. In November of 2017 Adam Bystrom suddenly got a craving for that sweet nectar we all know; mead. With no meaderies in the area and little to no availability at liquor stores he decided to learn how to home brew. Since then mead has been the exclusive beverage he's fermented with a particular focus on session meads. He's been fortunate to win awards in a number of competitions all around the country and is a proud member of the Minnesota Home Brewers Association. Making mead since 2008. BJCP mead judge, addicted to collecting Mazer Cups, thinks JAOM is underrated, and his favorite spice is vanilla. Al Boyce has been a homebrewer since the early 1990's. He tasted his first mead at Bunratty Castle in Ireland, and was hooked. Orange Blossom is his favorite honey, Sangiovese is his favorite grape, and 71B is his favorite yeast. He is obsessed with Jamaican Sorrel (hibiscus), and vows to keep making Sorrel meads until he finally gets it right. He recently moved to a lake home in central Minnesota where he lives with his wife Beth and his Golden Retriever Cooper. Join us for what will most likely be mead madness! In this episode of "Sleepless in Singapore," I recount our journey from Irkutsk to Mongolia, an adventure that brought unexpected friendships and breathtaking natural beauty into our lives. Upon arriving in Irkutsk, we didn't linger, quickly moving on to meet Katya, a local who shared incredible tales of her solo travels, from scaling Everest's base camp with minimal gear to navigating deserts and jungles on a shoestring. Her stories, filled with humor and resilience, were both inspiring and a stark reminder of the vast experiences the world has to offer. Our next major stop was Lake Baikal, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and stunning natural beauty. This part of the trip was a profound experience, offering moments of reflection and connection with nature. The simplicity and magnificence of Baikal, coupled with the shared moments with friends old and new, underscored the journey's essence. As we moved into the Mongolian steppe, the landscape shifted to endless horizons and a profound sense of tranquility. Another small abattoir has announced it's to close its doors for good. McIntyre Meats in Bainbridge in the Yorkshire Dales has been working with local farmers for the last 23 years and is just the latest small abattoir to decide to call it a day. Between 2018 and 2022 the number of small abattoirs processing red meat dropped by a quarter according to DEFRA. Right now in the Cotswolds, a group of farmers are trying to raise three million pounds to save Long Compton Abattoir from closure by buying it themselves. Why does it matter? Well, if you like to buy your meat local, direct from the farm or from a farmers market, the livestock your beef or sausages comes from will most likely have been slaughtered and possibly butchered at a small abattoir. Graham Bottley produces Mutton from his flock of Swaledale sheep in the Yorkshire Dales, and until now, has been using McIntyre Meats regularly We are looking into the business side of farming this week, now for most non-farming companies or organisations, training, appraisal and continuing professional development is the norm. But if you're a small family farm business, already dealing with rising costs, increasing paperwork, as well as the unpredictability of markets and weather, training courses can come a long way down the priority list. Ernie Richards is a shepherd from Hay on Wye and he argues that taking time out for training courses off the farm is an important investment. Mariclare Carey-Jones has been to meet him.

The consumption of non-vegetarian food is not a big deal in West Bengal. As far as Bongs are concerned, it is just food. And they love it. In this week's #SharpEdge video column, author and columnist Vir Sanghvi says if Bengalis eat mutton rolls at Puja pandals, good for them. Stop Talibanisation of Hinduism.
