Back in May 1970, Randy Bachman left the Guess Who after getting into a disagreement with his bandmates. He'd been with the group in its various incarnations for 10 years and was invited to join by its founder, Chad Allan. Interestingly, at the time of Randy's departure, Chad had already been gone for four years, leaving shortly after the arrival of Burton Cummings, and the two teamed up to form Brave Belt in 1971. That group eventually morphed into Bachman-Turner Overdrive, but, before they broke nationwide, Chad left again. In his new article for the Strange Brew, writer Scott G. Shea examines Chad Allan's story, how he softly started a rock revolution in Canada and why he left before each band broke internationally. I hope you'll make some time to have Scott G. Shea, a leading music historian and author of the best-selling book, “All the Leaves Are Brown: How the Mamas & the Papas Came Together and Broke Apart,” on your program to discuss the not only the story of Chad Allan, but the history of the Guess Who and BTO, the incredible music they made and how revolutionary they were. The Guess Who was particularly unique in that they found a place on both the Top 40 AM band and the more progressive album rock stations on the FM side. Theirs is a fascinating story of friendship, luck, breakups, reunions and happenstance.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Jason Fraley interviews The Guess Who's lead singer Burton Cummings, who rocks the Warner Theatre in Washington D.C. on March 19. They reflect on the band's unique name and its biggest hits from “These Eyes” to “American Woman.” (Theme Music: Scott Buckley's "Clarion")
like nearly everyone else, I've had to endure countless on and offline “HOT TAKES” about Kendrick Lamar's SB halftime show, it's astonishing this performance generated so much controversy compared to Burton Cummings' appearance at the CFL Grey Cup nearly a quarter century ago. Have we already forgotten Cummings not only setting fire to a Canadian flag, but a Canadian flag that was wrapped over a basket of kittens? Sure, i bet a few of you were phoning talk radio to complain the organizers should've booked the Nihilist Spasm Band or Fur Trade or at the very least a collaboration between the two, but by and large this horrible incident has been wiped from the history books and I think you all know why. At least I hope some of you know why, because I am counting on you to ring in or DM to let me know. (above : from left to right, Burton Cummings and The Albert Henry George Grey Cup. Not shown - the Canadian flag he set on fire and later urinated upon to extinguish the blaze)
I had the privilege to speak to singer-songwriter Burton Cummings. Blind Faith was a supergroup formed from Cream members Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker, Traffic founder Steve Winwood, and Family bassist/violinist Ric Grech. Cream collapsed after increasing strife between members, particularly Baker and bassist Jack Bruce. Traffic went on hiatus, and Winwood began jamming with Clapton in his basement. Baker sat in on a session shortly after they moved to Traffic's rehearsal space in Berkshire, and was added to the lineup after some reluctance from Clapton was overcome. Finally, Grech was invited to join, and left the Family in the middle of a U.S. tour, creating understandable grievances. The group created blues-oriented and psychedelic rock for their eponymously named Blind Faith debut album. A summer tour was launched, but it was a challenging thing. Clapton didn't want to do long jam sessions on the tour, but their single album was not a lot of material for a concert. As a result, they wound up playing a significant amount of Cream and Traffic songs. This delighted the audience, but irritated and distanced Clapton. Despite great buzz from critics and fans alike, the group was destined to only last a few months. Clapton began drifting away while on tour, spending more time with opening act Delaney & Bonnie. He would eventually join that group prior to launching Derek & the Dominos. Ginger Baker would move on to form Ginger Baker's Air Force, bringing in Winwood and Grech for a short stint before Winwood rejoined Traffic. Rob brings us this short-lived supergroup in this week's podcast. Had to Cry TodayThe title track dispenses with the 3-minute single format in favor of a long form jam written by Steve Winwood. The lyrics are ambiguous, and could reference a dying relationship, or perhaps a friend drifting away. Can't Find My Way HomeWinwood also wrote this well-known single from the album, covered by a number of artists including Joe Cocker, Alison Krauss, and Bonnie Raitt. Winwood has been asked about the meaning of the lyrics, but has said that discussing song lyrics is a little like explaining a joke - it doesn't add anything to the experience. Clapton leaves his electric guitar in favor of a rare acoustic one for this song.Well All RightThis track is the only one not written by members of Blind Faith. Buddy Holly, Norman Petty, Jerry Allison, and Joe B. Mauldin wrote this song, and Holly sang it in 1958. Clapton takes lead vocal duties on this song.Sea of JoyA piece of Winwood's writing also leads off side two of the album. While some believe the song references hallucinogens, a simpler meaning would be simply the joy of being on the water. “And I'm feeling close to when the race is run. Waiting in our boats to set sail. Sea of joy.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Pfft You Were Gone (from the variety show “Hee Haw”)This country comedy and music show premiered on CBS in this month. Buck Owens and Roy Clark led an ensemble of regulars and guests in this variety show. STAFF PICKS:These Eyes by The Guess WhoWayne starts out the staff picks with a song co-written by lead singer Burton Cummings and lead guitarist Randy Bachman. This was their breakout song, with lyrics that describe the devastating feeling in the days following a long relationship break-up.Badge by CreamLynch reminds us that while Cream may have disbanded by this time, their music was still on the charts. Eric Clapton and George Harrison wrote this song. It was supposed to be called "Bridge," but was named "Badge," due to a misreading of the handwritten title. George Harrison plays rhythm guitar, credited as "D'Angelo Misterioso" to avoid contractual issues.Oh Happy Day by the Edwin Hawkins SingersBruce features the first gospel song to hit the charts, reaching number 4 on the US singles chart. Edwin Hawkins took a hymn originally written by Phillip Doddridge in 1755, and updated it with a piano introduction inspired by Sergio Mendes and lyrical improvisations influenced by James Brown. See by The Rascals Rob finishes the staff picks with the fuzzy lead off and title track to the Rascals sixth studio album. Between 1966 and 1968, the Rascals released a number of soul-inspired singles. This album marked a change in the band's focus from blue-eyed soul to psychedelic rock. COMEDY TRACK:Gitarzan by Ray StevensOne of the earliest comedy singles from Stevens closes out our podcast this week. We are back with Season Ten! Christopher and Tom begin by talking about their favourite interviews ever. Then, we launch into one of the best interviews you'll ever hear with one the most reluctant rock stars ever – Robert Plant. This 2005 interview with our friend Bill Welychka is very revealing. And within that interview is three episodes of “When Rock Stars attack… which are all pretty funny. Then, we talk about the making of the film, album and song “Purple Rain”, which came out 40 years ago. And we'll talk to the author of a book about that movie – and all the stories behind that. (By the way, you can also hear the long version of that Purple Rain chat in the Famous Lost Words podcast feed, including how Stevie Nicks almost got involved and why Prince decided to call up the guys from Journey.) And we have a wonderful segment with the legendary BB King – which includes one of my favourite stories – about how he used to quiet down an unruly audience. All that, plus some Music News about the very contentious lawsuit over who gets to use the name The Guess Who. And that story has a very good ending if you're a fan of Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman. Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. Every day these days I seem to find out something important that I didn't know before. For example, that Burton Cummings has just released a new album. Or that one of Joe Dante's favorite movies is a Spanish religious satire released in 1995. Or... that The Fantasticks is really good! Or that the creators of the latter wrote an uncommonly powerful musical about a Christian martyr. As I say, every day is a rebuke to one's supposed deep bench. This podcast looks at the abreactive power of music and the aspirations of live theater to get through to our real selves. Like a sermon is meant to do! The vehicle is the off-Broadway play entitled Philemon, which first opened in 1975 and ultimately ran for about 55 performances. The lyricist was Tom Jones and the composer was Harvey Schmidt. Here, in Philemon, two mainstream Broadway artists tried to encapsulate the story of a radical Christian conversion in Third Century Antioch, and with just seven performers and maybe two+ instrumentalists. Funny thing is, they succeeded! Sure, it could be cut by 40 minutes (!). Sure, the theology is a little sketchy, tho' entirely well meaning. BUT Philemon manages to capture the abreactive/cathartic form of "instant/automatic psychoanalysis" by which a converted person goes from death to life in concrete terms. Philemon manages to get under the skin of Herr Moltmann's Tod-Auferstehung (i.e., Death-Resurrection) dynamic -- which IMO is the true dynamic of life. (We are in Frank Lake territory, but it's Greenwich Village and it's 1975.) Oh, and the concluding track embodies the failure of the Law to create the response it intends -- Motown-fashion! LUV U.

Increasing danger concerning possible terror/ISIS supporter-like attacks in Western nations including Canada. In Austria, where the CIA informed Austrian intelligence agencies of an ISIS-like plot with the intent to kill "tens of thousands" of Taylor Swift fans attending her concerts in Vienna, was the cause for the concerts this month to be canceled. Burton Cummings' voice has been rated among the finest in rock music. Today he continues at the top of his game as performer, singer, songwriter, poet and recording artist. As lead singer and songwriter for Canada's original rock ‘n' roll superstars, The Guess Who, Burton scored an unprecedented string of international hit singles and albums including “American Woman,” “These Eyes,” “Laughing,” “No Time,” “Share the Land,” “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature,” “Clap for the Wolfman”, “Albert Flasher” and others, all written or co-written by Burton. By 1970, The Guess Who had sold more records than the entire Canadian music industry combined before breaking up in 1975. The group achieved a long list of firsts including first Canadian group to reach #1 on Billboard charts -- holding that spot for three weeks - and first to earn a platinum album for U.S. sales of more than one million copies. Rolling Stone magazine hailed The Guess Who as “one of rock's most consistently fascinating maverick bands” with a succession of songs “that has few equals among contemporary North American groups.” Dick Clark described the group as rock innovators and ambassadors of Canadian music. Beginning his career as a solo artist in 1976, Burton continued his winning streak with a gold record for his solo debut single “Stand Tall,” produced by legendary hitmaker Richard Perry who numbered among his clients Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon and Ringo Starr. The choice of producer was evidence of Burton's star power in the music industry. He followed his inaugural solo success with more than a dozen hit singles and albums including “I'm Scared,” “My Own Way to Rock,” “I Will Play a Rhapsody,” “Timeless Love,” “Break It to Them Gently,” “Dream of a Child,” and “You Saved My Soul.” Sold-out tours across Canada and the United States solidified Burton's stature as a top entertainer. He starred in several highly rated television specials and, between 1977 and 1980, earned five Juno Awards for Best Male Vocalist and Best Album, serving as host of the annual Juno gala a record four times. Burton's 1978 album Dream of a Child became the first quadruple platinum-selling album by a Canadian artist. Through the ‘80s and ‘90s, Burton continued to tour and joined Beatles drummer Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. In 1980, a starring role in the feature film Melanie with Miami Vice star Don Johnson earned Burton a Genie Award for Best Original Song. He also launched his acclaimed Up Close and Alone solo concert series. A live album of the same name followed. The success of Lenny Kravitz' cover of “American Woman” in the hit feature film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me brought renewed attention to the original Guess Who. The group reunited in 1999 for the closing ceremonies of the Pan-American Games with a television audience numbering in the tens of millions. Several high-profile North American tours followed. As the VOICE of all the classic Guess Who hit songs, Burton has toured with his long-time band, for the past twenty-three years across North America as well as joining Randy Bachman onstage as Bachman Cummings, performing his songs from the original The Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Burton's solo career. Described as Canadian rock ‘n' roll royalty, a national treasure, and a living legend, for Burton Cummings there has always been one constant: he remains true to himself and his own way to rock… and continuing to perform the songs the way they were originally conceived by the artist who sang and wrote/co-wrote them. Burton joins us this week to share his musical story and lets us know about his other passion - writing poetry. For more information head to his website burtoncummings.com

"A Few Good Moments" So: how much of a legend is the Winnipeg-born Burton Cummings? Well, let's just start with these few facts and we'll work our way backwards. He's been inducted into both the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. He's been named as an officer of the Order of Canada and both the Burton Cummings Theatre and the Burton Cummings Community Centre in Winnipeg are named after him. I mean, should we even keep going? We will, but there's no need. Legend status full cemented. But here's more: Cummings joined The Guess Who as a young lad of 18 and within a few years the band was an international sensation. They're the first Canadian act to land an American Number One with American Woman, and they had a wildly successful run of albums including Wheatfield Soul and Share The Land. After the band dissolved in 1975, Cummings launched a solo career that was decidedly huge. His first effort yielded the massive single Stand Tall, which sold over a million copies in the United States alone. He's put out close to ten albums, snagged six Juno awards, put out a book of poetry, sang background vocals for Eric Carmen, got a star on the Canadian Walk of Fame, did some acting and toured the world. He's got a new album on the way and we chat about that plus a whole lot more. The fact is, he has one of the most powerful voices in music history--it's a brilliant balance of muscle and soul and his vocal precision is practically peerless. I want to say this before we begin--Burton Cummings may be a legend, but his kindness is as legendary as his achievements--he's one of the nicest guys ever, www.burtoncummings.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

This week we pick a Canuck classic that's two songs in one - "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" by The Guess Who. The lyrics are faux-profound, but Burton Cummings' pipes and scattin' will spike your blood sugar. We scoured the record bins for our second version - a dirtbag bubblegum version by Steel Wool. They bring the song back to perfect popsong length by axing "New Mother Nature", but the guitar stings might be too long. The third in the pack definitely isn't sugar-free - The Shirelles and their 1971 version is "so sweet" and superfunky. For dessert, an Italian confection by the amazing Mia Martini. She gives BC a run for his money, sounding like a vampire fronting Led Zeppelin - a real Saskatoon-to-Sicily transformation! She's gettin' us all!!!
We get back on track this week and continue along with our rankings of OU812 (paying homage to The Podcast Will Rock). We talk Alex and Bonham and how groovy they both are. (11:25) How hard was it to discover Van Halen when Anne Murray and Burton Cummings were force fed to you by the media? And how hard was it when Van Halen finally broke through on mainstream media and broke up shortly afterwards for us? Were we resentful when Sammy joined and why? We break down our feelings and emotions as fans during that time period. (19:12) Van Halen's breakthrough also broke many other bands to radio, like Honeymoon Suite, Triumph, Huey Lewis & The News and Hall & Oates. We break down how radio would not play something popular until it was safe to do so.#podcast #music #vanhalen #1984 @PodcastWillRock @kelseyvanhalen @bookedonrockWebsite: www.seanmcginity.caMerch: Red Bubble: https://www.redbubble.com/people/seangeekpodcast/shopTee Public: https://www.teepublic.com/seangeekpodcast@seangeekpodcast on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook@fastfretfingers on Instagram@ToddGeeks Tech Talk on Facebook @captivatefmMentioned in this episode:New Merch AdAn ad that incorporates Red Bubble and Tee PublicThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
There's real truth to the notion that being in a band is like being in a relationship, for better or for worse. For many of the greatest bands of all time, each member contributes to the chemistry that makes the band so great. Many times band members feel the need to go solo and even though they are rock stars when they're in their bands, as solo artists they are merely one hit wonders. This phenomenon sheds a light on the importance of band dynamics, and the possible limitations of their parts in relation to the sum of them. Our old friend Jeff Axelrod phones in from his home in China with a fun little concept for the pod. Top Ten Solo One Hit Wonders explores these singular hits from artists you know from some of the best bands ever. This week we give thanks for another twofer with a couple of legends. First up is my brief chat with jazz icon Les McCann. This weekend Les is releasing a special box set for Record Store Day, Never a Dull Moment - Live From Coast to Coast 66-67. This gorgeous collection showcases his mastery of the piano in the Trio setting and is an incredible piece of history. We're SO lucky to get a few minutes of his time. Then we hear from original Guess Who drummer Garry Peterson. The band has been without Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings for decades now, but the younger and hungrier group is still making great music today. This year they released the album Plein D'Amour which, I'm not kidding, sounds just like something Jellyfish would have released in the 90s. Garry describes the band dynamic now, his relationship with his old bandmates, and where this new sound came from. Enjoy! www.lesmccannunlimited.com www.theguesswho.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Hutchison sings with the conviction of someone who has lived these experiences, and her crystal clear voice commands attention from the very first note. With captivating melodies and strikingly powerful, honest lyrics that stay with you long after the songs are over, Hutchison weaves achingly beautiful stories, offering her unique brand of realistic optimism to others who are struggling. Blind since birth, music was an integral part of Hutchison's world from a young age. Growing up in Edmonton, Alberta, she spent much time in her early years making up melodies and figuring out songs by ear on the piano. She was exposed to a diverse array of artists from her parents' music collection such as Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, and Burton Cummings. She cites later musical influences including Sara Bareilles, Eva Cassidy, Donovan Woods, and City and Colour. Since her completion of a diploma in Jazz and Contemporary Voice in Vancouver, British Columbia, she has grown to incorporate some elements of jazz into her music. Latin influences are also evident in newer material, a product of time spent living in South America. Her songs are not only a musical project for Hutchison, they are her life's work. The themes of her music are the perfect soundtrack to her recently released Amazon best-selling memoir, Holding On by Letting Go. Hutchison is passionate about educating people on mental health and disability through her music and writing. She is a frequent guest on national television and radio programs and renowned podcasts across the globe, singing and speaking to bring her message of hope to those who are struggling. In her advocacy work, she has appeared alongside numerous high-profile psychologists, clinical counselors and other mental health professionals. Since the release of her first EP of original material at only sixteen years of age, Hutchison has released four albums and numerous singles to critical acclaim and has performed in concert halls, theatres, clubs and outdoor stages from North to South America, with many performances broadcast on television and radio. Her singles have received frequent airplay across Canada and the US, and she has been a regional finalist in CBC's Searchlight. Her single, Reason to Stay, won a 2016 Vancouver Island Music Award for pop recording of the year, and her album, Where the Ocean Meets the Sand, was nominated for album of the year at the VIMAs. A versatile artist, Hutchison sings in both English and Spanish and can be seen performing her original material solo or with a band, as well as appearing with her jazz group, The Heather Hutchison Trio. With fans from around the world and the innate ability to connect with audiences young and old, the universality of Hutchison's message is clear Purchase 20TIMinutes Merch:20TIMinutes Gear Follow Tim: YouTube Instagram Twitter Facebook Download the FREE 20TIMinutes App DISCLAIMER: This podcast is for entertainment purposes only & informs all listeners of the podcast, that the views, thoughts, and opinions expressed in the each episode belong solely to the host of 20TIMinutes, Tim McCarthy, and not necessarily to the podcast hosts employer, organization, committee or other group or individual. Today Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is considered Eric Clapton's best work. However, at the time that this double album debut by Derek and the Dominos came out it was considered both a commercial and critical failure. Clapton met fellow Derek and the Dominos band members Bobby Whitlock (keyboards), Carl Radle (bass) and Jim Gordon (drums) when working with Delaney & Bonnie. Whitlock and Clapton got together at Clapton's house and composed most of what would become the original songs on the Layla album. The name Derek and the Dominos was chosen by Eric Clapton because he was tired of the supergroup approach to music and did not want his fame to overshadow the band. Derek and the Dominos played a lot of small clubs in England in August, then went to Miami to record the studio album. The group met up with Duane Allman in Miami, and Allman and Clapton struck up a close friendship from the start. Allman would record on 11 of the 14 songs on the album. Most know that the song Layla was inspired by Clapton's infatuation with Pattie Boyd Harrison, George Harrison's wife. In truth, many of the songs on the Layla album were performed with Pattie Boyd in mind.Unfortunately this double album is the only record these musicians would make together. Clapton would struggle with drug addiction and depression for several years afterward, and Allman would die in a tragic accident in 1971. The reputation of this album would grow over time, however, and is iconic today. Bell Bottom BluesThis song was the first single, and was written by Clapton and Whitlock. The inspiration for the song was that Pattie Boyd had asked Clapton to get her a pair of bell-bottom blue jeans while he was in the United States. It's Too LateThe album contains five covers including this blues song originally benned by Chuck Willis in 1956. Clapton and Whitlock trade off on vocals, and guitar work is from Eric Clapton and Duane Allman. The song would be performed on Derek and the Dominos' only TV appearance, on the Johnny Cash Show in January 1971.Why Does Love Got to Be So SadYou can hear a terrific jam between Clapton and Allman on guitar in this song. It swings from A minor on the verses to D major on the chorus. Whitlock and Clapton trade off vocal work.LaylaThis signature track was inspired by a 12th century tale called “The Story of Layla and Majnun.” It is about a young man who falls hopelessly in love with a young girl only to be rebuffed by her father because of his obsession with her. Clapton of course identified with the story of hopeless love because of his feelings toward Pattie Boyd Harrison. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “The Goodies”This offbeat comedy series premiered in the UK in this month. STAFF PICKS:Share the Land by the Guess WhoBrian starts off the staff picks with the title track from the Guess Who's seventh studio album, and the first after the departure of guitarist Randy Bachman. The lyrics reflect the growing popularity of the environmental movement. Burton Cummings wrote this song and sings lead.Cherryhill Park by Billy Joe RoyalWayne brings us a story song about a young girl named Mary Hill who “was a thrill after dark in Cherryhill Park.” The thrills end when Mary Hill marries a rich man. Billy Joe Royal was born in Valdosta, Georgia.Montego Bay by Bobby BloomRob finds an early reggae-influenced rock song. Bobby Bloom and Jeff Berry wrote this one-hit wonder. It made it to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sadly, Bobby Bloom died in 1974 at the age of 28.Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed by 100 Proof (Aged in Soul)Bruce's staff pick comes from the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier Holland after they left Motown Records to set up a separate label. This song about discovering evidence of infidelity went to number 8 on the US pop charts, and was 100 Proof's biggest hit INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Overture by the WhoIn the tradition of symphonic music, the Who began their rock opera Tommy with this overture.

But at the end of the day, Fred loves making music and connecting with audiences of all ages. Hear The Music features a roll call of marquee Canadian talent including (but not limited to) Ron Sexsmith, Alex Cuba, Basia Bulat, The Good Lovelies, Terra Lightfoot, Afie Jurvanen (a.k.a Bahamas) plus backup vocals from Fred's own family, all tethered to the sterling production of long-time collaborator Ken Whiteley.
