God's Call to Work Hard | Will Butler

Men's Leadership Network Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2021 32:54

No matter what you do in life, whether you're a businessman, a teacher, a dad, a CEO, or another role, God has called us to work in all things to the very best of our ability. That's what Will Butler, our guest on today's podcast, learned from a young age and what he takes into life each and every day.Though he began his career in the corporate world, several opportunities that, at the time, were fairly risky crossed his path, and Will ended up making the move to become an entrepreneur and business owner. Now, as the owner of several businesses in the Nashville area, including Mojos Tacos, Five Daughters Bakery, and Burger Up, as well as a Commercial Real Estate Entrepreneur and Wealth Advisor at TBH Global in Franklin, TN, Will still makes it a priority to keep his faith first, his family second, and his work third. And, when it does come to work, he firmly believes that its our duty as Christ-followers to give our very best to all that we do.You'll hear it over and over again from Will in this month's podcast. Work hard. That's your job. Work hard. God will work through your work.We can find ourselves falling into a routine. We answer the emails, go to the meeting, scarf down lunch still swallowing on our way to the next meeting, carve out some time to get that proposal done, then jump to the next thing until it's time to go home. Just to wake up, rinse, and repeat. It's our nature to slip into routine. We can so easily be lulled to sleep in our everyday lives, but that's not how Christ called us to work.Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters... (Colossians 3:23) You've heard it before. We're not meant to coast through our work and cash our check (excuse the outdated reference). As a man, you're called to pour yourself out daily to the fullest extent. Take a moment to dissect a key part of the verse. It says "work at it." That's it. No qualifiers, no wiggle room, no room for excuses. It doesn't say when you feel like working at it, it doesn't say when you want to work at it, or even when you're having a good day, work at it. God tells us to work at it. Plain and simple. All the time work at it.Secondly and just as important, it says "with all your heart." You may have convinced yourself if you just do the thing, then you've submitted yourself fully to the command. But you haven't. God's not just concerned if you're working at it, He wants you to give of yourself entirely. Translation: you should be exhausted at the end of the day. You should be proud of the work and effort you put in each day. You should want to sign your name on the day and say, "Yeah, I did that today." You're working to bring honor to God in your day job. Whether it's behind a computer or out in the field, God is concerned with your effort level because He has you exactly where He wants you in His plans, and it's up to you to stay fully engaged with His work. Which is ours. So, take the time to listen to Will Butler's podcast today, then sit down and think through a couple of these questions: Did you give "all your heart" to your work yesterday? If you did, how do you know? If you didn't, why not? If you could redo yesterday, what would you change? Apply that change to today. If you gave all your heart to your work every day for a year, what would life look like at the end of that year? When was the last time you asked God to supply you with the energy and discernment for the day?

We passed through Missouri to Illinois to Kentucky to Tennessee! Originally, we were going to go through Indiana and take a river cave tour, but decided to take the shorter route and go straight through Tennessee. We have been on the road for 6 days so far, and the rules were pretty strict for the river cave tour. What did we see though? Hannibal, Missouri offered a plethora of awesome sites! We stopped at the mammoth Fireworks Superstore! It was incredible! It had more fireworks than I even knew existed. Truth, we've only ever been to the dinky parking lot tents, but this place is so cool! It's bigger than a Costco warehouse and filled to the brim! We will definitely be coming back here! We also found all the Mark Twain Sites. His birthplace, the lake that inspired him, the Mark Twain caves, and our little adventurer Widmore begged for the books as soon as we got to a place that Amazon could ship! We gladly obliged! We stopped for a bite to eat at A Taste of Philly in Bowling Green, MO. I'm not sure why we thought it was a good idea to buy crab cakes in the midwest. We don't recommend it. Of course, we stopped in the big city of St. Louis and played in the park and saw the famous Gateway Arch and learned all about the westward expansion! We world schooled about ethanol, and ethanol plants and how grain is used in so many products we use every day! And of course, we stopped in Nashville at Five Daughters Bakery to purchase a dozen 100 layer donuts! These donuts are the greatest donuts in the world! https://diapersonaplane.com/five-daughters-bakery/Questions We Asked Ourselves: Does America grow anything besides corn?Favorite activities: Population Trivia and Riddles. While on the road, our favorite activity was trying to solve riddles! We found an awesome website that we used to quiz the kids. https://www.fatherly.com/play/the-best-riddles-for-kids-not-confusing/ We found that Pie is great at linguistic word riddles, Eclair is remarkably astute at ones where the answer is right in front of you, and Widmore loves all the rest. They won laffy taffy ropes for each 3 riddles that they were able to get right! The best part was when the kids started coming up with their own riddles. Did you know that the beginning stages of Paul the Apostle’s ministry were greatly affected by a woman? And not just any woman: Lydia, a successful businesswoman, who many scholars believe to be his first known convert. Specifically, she sold purple cloth—which, back then, was valuable and expensive. It was a sign of wealth, nobility and royalty. Purple cloth was purchased and worn by members of the royal family and Roman senators. So Lydia’s customers—her demographic and target market, in fact—were upper-class people. And we can assume that Lydia was successful and prosperous because she owned a home with enough rooms to host Paul and three of his friends overnight at the same time! What I love about Lydia’s story is that it’s a biblical example of how God cares about our life as a whole, not just our spiritual life. The biblical account of her life doesn’t shy away from the fact that she was a successful businesswoman. And why would it? God cares about our business pursuits! He is the One who gave us those gifts to be used in the first place. If it weren’t for Lydia’s business, would she have had the means and the space to house Paul and his companions overnight? Maybe not. Later in her story, she once again offers up her home as a place for the early church to meet. Lydia didn’t operate what we would call a “Christian” or faith-based business, but her business and her lifestyle of faith was certainly helping Christians. Related: What Happens When You Use Your Gifts One of my favorite Bible passages speaks to not only using your gifts, but also using them as a light for others: “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14–16 (NIV) How Can Faith Affect Your Business? As a Christian, when you live a life of faith, you are being true to yourself. But you may have wondered how prominent your faith should be in your business. There are two ways to approach faith in business: Your business is identified as being in the Christian sector. Your business is in the general marketplace but is owned by someone of faith. Choosing which approach to take in your business is an important decision, because it will affect your: Marketing Unique position Labeling Access to other markets In this episode, I’ll explain the real differences here and give lots of examples. I want you to decide which path makes the most sense for you. That way, you can reach the most people! My First Guest This Week Is Alli Worthington! Alli is an author, speaker, mom of five boys (send prayers), and the executive director of Propel Women. She’s an amazing entrepreneurial coach, helping everyone from small-business owners all the way up to fortune 500 companies! But being a successful businesswoman wasn’t always part of Alli’s story. She shares her journey of dealing with an unsettling force that so many of us deal with: anxiety. Alli remembers one day in a Target parking lot when she broke down in tears. She called a friend for help, and her friend told her, “You’re so held down by the weight of fear and worry—and you’re trying to make safety your god.” But Alli thought that was normal. She thought anxiety was just part of modern life. It wasn’t until the release of her first book—while simultaneously walking with her husband through a serious illness—that she was able to confront her fears head on and break free from anxiety. Alli’s story is a very real example of how tough, terrifying and downright unpleasant it can be to put one foot in front of the other, trusting God and pursuing what you love in the face of fear. In this podcast, Alli and I talk about: How men and women experience fear differently Practical ways to follow God’s “Fear not” command Working through the unique kind of visceral, vulnerable fear that comes with being a mom Exploring Faith in Business With Stephanie Meek Stephanie and her husband, Isaac, own and operate Five Daughters Bakery in Nashville, Tennessee—and y’all, their donuts are like a drug. These are not your typical donuts; they are gourmet, croissant donuts . . . and they’re next-level good. The bakery is named for Stephanie and Isaac’s five daughters, and that’s not the only element from their personal lives they incorporated into the business. While they don’t run a business that falls into the Christian sector, they are business owners of faith. Their faith influences everything about their approach to business: from the way they treat their employees and customers to what they charge for donuts (and guess what—they’re not “cheap!”). In this episode, Stephanie and I talk about: Seeking God first in your dream and your business How they got their product into stores and then grew into their own storefront Operating a business under their number one core value: relationships first Leaving a legacy of leadership for your family to see Plus, I’ll answer a question from one of our live Business Boutique events about operations. We are excited to welcome Stephanie Meek to the show!  Stephanie and her husband Isaac own and operate Five Daughters Bakery, based in Tennessee.  You'll hear her story as she shares with Courtney about how they built a business from a place of rest.  They also chat about the mission work they continue to participate in and offer some advice for anyone looking to start something new.  Spoiler alert: it includes rest!  It’s so good.  Enjoy! Isaac Meek, the founder of Five Daughters Bakery, motivated each of us today as he spoke about his business and transition from the corporate world into starting a bakery. But more than the story of fast growth and creating awesome products, we all walked away with a better understanding of what it really means to succeed. Success is not measured in just revenue or expansion but in the way you treat people, love your employees and the increase in your dependency and faith in God as you step out to do new ventures.
