Coping with Grief after Stillbirth-6 Months After Losing Our Precious Full Term Infant Unexpectedly

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2021 30:55

It has been 6 excruciating months since we lost our perfect and precious infant son, full term at 41 weeks. We had no idea anything was wrong when we went to the hospital. He was active, healthy and growing perfectly. After 3 previous healthy pregnancies that all went full term, including twins, we had no reason to suspect that our perfect son left us to be with our Heavenly Father. #stillbirth #infantloss #copingwithgrief We made our first video a few weeks after our tragedy. https://youtu.be/az6RrlniY-c We were hoping to try and make some sense of why this happened. We were lost, but we knew that no matter what, we wanted to remember the details and the pain that we were suffering. We couldn't give him anything, except an acknowledgment of all the reasons we wanted and loved him completely.  There will never be the right words to express the emotions and grief that accompany the agony of losing a child - but hearing that we are not alone helps us. We hope it can help someone else too. A few things that I wanted to mention, but forgot. 1. Memory affects grief in unexpected ways. I'm not talking mom brain. I'm talking after playing the piano for 20 years, sitting down and not being able to associate which fingers with which keys or which notes. I lose time for hours at a time. At the end of the day, I have no idea what happened. 2. A few additional suggestions for how you can help someone going through this. I had a friend give me a few doTERRA oils: Cheer, Peace and Console. The days I remember to use them, I notice a definite increase in my spirit. Another friend gifted me a journal. It is so important to have a safe place to record your feelings. Even 6 months later I can read what happened in the early moments that followed this catastrophe and was blessed just yesterday to be reminded of an impression I received from our Lord and Savior. This is such a cherished gift. 3. Accept all the help you can. We do not have family that came to help, and it's one of the things I often lament. I would have appreciated more than anything someone to have come taken care of my big kids so I didn't have to face the responsibility. At the same time, I couldn't bear the thought of having them far from me. There is a fine line. If you know someone intimately that would trust you to come into their home and care for their children, be that angel to someone grieving if you can. Quiet moments of peace are so important. We love you, Walter. This is Episode #50: 6 Months After Losing Our Precious Full Term Infant Son Unexpectedly

This year was hard, and we didn't want to celebrate Christmas in our home that also had such sad memories. We honestly didn't want to celebrate Christmas at all -- but with 4 little ones we really didn't have that option. Instead, we wanted Christmas to be separate from the sadness - so we chose a hotel where we'd never been and stretched out for 3 days. It was a a great compromise. We rented an airbnb with a pool for a few weeks to finish out our USA Coronasummer Road Trip of 2020 slash babymoon! It took a long 10 hours or so, but we did it! We arrived late at night in Punta Gorda and were so relieved to know that we wouldn’t be driving at all, anywhere, the next day! We didn’t even have to get in the car at all! We took a midnight swim and the kids couldn’t have been more excited. Just like at home the twins had a bunk bed, Eclair got a purple room, and Molasses was so excited to not have to sleep in a pack and play. As it turns out we did have to get in the car for groceries, but it was a short drive and we were in and out and came back to the house to go swimming again. We truly enjoyed our time in Florida! It was a short drive to stop and see friends before ending our trip in South Florida. Such a good reprieve from the long days of driving! To top it off we got to spend the afternoon and evening eating BBQ with friends, playing with the twins' partner in crime, and enjoying great company! Our friends moved from Utah to Georgia 3 years ago, and we miss them everyday! We passed through Missouri to Illinois to Kentucky to Tennessee! Originally, we were going to go through Indiana and take a river cave tour, but decided to take the shorter route and go straight through Tennessee. We have been on the road for 6 days so far, and the rules were pretty strict for the river cave tour. What did we see though? Hannibal, Missouri offered a plethora of awesome sites! We stopped at the mammoth Fireworks Superstore! It was incredible! It had more fireworks than I even knew existed. Truth, we've only ever been to the dinky parking lot tents, but this place is so cool! It's bigger than a Costco warehouse and filled to the brim! We will definitely be coming back here! We also found all the Mark Twain Sites. His birthplace, the lake that inspired him, the Mark Twain caves, and our little adventurer Widmore begged for the books as soon as we got to a place that Amazon could ship! We gladly obliged! We stopped for a bite to eat at A Taste of Philly in Bowling Green, MO. I'm not sure why we thought it was a good idea to buy crab cakes in the midwest. We don't recommend it. Of course, we stopped in the big city of St. Louis and played in the park and saw the famous Gateway Arch and learned all about the westward expansion! We world schooled about ethanol, and ethanol plants and how grain is used in so many products we use every day! And of course, we stopped in Nashville at Five Daughters Bakery to purchase a dozen 100 layer donuts! These donuts are the greatest donuts in the world! https://diapersonaplane.com/five-daughters-bakery/Questions We Asked Ourselves: Does America grow anything besides corn?Favorite activities: Population Trivia and Riddles. While on the road, our favorite activity was trying to solve riddles! We found an awesome website that we used to quiz the kids. https://www.fatherly.com/play/the-best-riddles-for-kids-not-confusing/ We found that Pie is great at linguistic word riddles, Eclair is remarkably astute at ones where the answer is right in front of you, and Widmore loves all the rest. They won laffy taffy ropes for each 3 riddles that they were able to get right! The best part was when the kids started coming up with their own riddles. It's amazing what kids can do when given total creative freedom without barriers! We arrived later than anticipated, but decided to stop here for a few days and take a mid trip pit stop in Missouri to check out the local sites, farm land and meet up with some friends! On our way there we stopped in Salina, Kansas at the Cozy Inn. https://www.cozyburger.com/ This is not a hotel, but a cute little outdoor eatery that serves mini hamburgers sold by the half dozen. We picked up 18 and everyone wished we had more! We also stopped in Kansas City, Kansas at Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que! https://www.joeskc.com/ Whatever you do, don't skip the burnt ends! This place is Anthony Bourdain approved, and worth every penny. It's the best food we ate the entire trip! We also ate at Gingeritch: A Dutch Pantry. They have some of the best fried chicken, catfish and apple pie we've ever had! Don't miss it! Kansas City spans two different states, both Kansas and Missouri, and the border is the Missouri River. Growing up in Oregon, I was used to crossing the Columbia River to reach Washington and this gave us another worldschooling opportunity to see how many states are divided by rivers. This wasn't the only one that we crossed over during our minivan road trip! We stayed in Cameron, Missouri and met up with friends at Adam Ondi-Ahman where we shared our BBQ the first night. Adam Ondi-Ahman is affectionately known as AOA by the locals. It's a beautiful sprawling land mass covered in corn fields, parks to play in and even has some original pioneer homes. It was pretty incredible to walk in such a sacred place! We also visited the Far West Temple Site and saw the original four cornerstones that the early prophets of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints laid. We climbed trees, we viewed and walked the grounds and we researched more sacred text and history. Questions We Asked Ourselves: Why don't we move to Missouri?? It's normal for people in Missouri to just have 2 acres. That's just a normal yard for most people! In Utah, we are begging for a sliver to mow! The pace of life is really slow, laidback and contemplative. We spent two days here and we really enjoyed our time. We went to the Amish Country Store, we got lost on country roads (there is NO cell service), we explored the woods, and we learned about self composting toilets! Worldschooling FTW! This is Vlog Episode #31: Part 2: Coronasummer Family Minivan Road Trip | Day 2 Colorado to Kansas - Miles and Miles and Miles of Corn Fields #coronasummer #familyroadtrip #minivanroadtripDay 2 we traveled from Keystone, Colorado to Hays, Kansas. Our end goal was Kansas City - specifically the Great Wolf Lodge, but as it turns out the Lodge has been bit by the bug and wasn't fully open.We were so sad! In part, because The Great Wolf Lodge was our biggest plan for our family minivan road trip! It was the one thing we were super excited to do during this dreadful coronasummer. We were also disappointed because there is nothing much else to do in Kansas but look out the window of the minivan! Instead we called it a day on our minivan road trip in a big little city called Hays, Kansas in Northwestern Kansas about 3.5 hours outside of Kansas City. We were super sad and disappointed. First we got some greasy hamburgers at Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, and then called every hotel to find one with vacancy enough to fit our big brood. Turns out the Comfort Inn offers a great set up with two queens and a pull out couch! The only downside is apparently the Comfort Inn has paper thin walls. The manager called us to tell us that our "neighbors" could hear the kids walking around. Yes, walking around. . We only made it about 7 hours on Day 2, but after 12 hours the first day, we earned a break! 7 hours is a long time in a car with little ones! During that time we saw miles and miles of corn fields and learned more trivia. We stopped in Limon, Colorado, mailed our taxes, got some Mexican Food and found a Railroad Park to play at! At one rest stop after passing through Kansas, we saw disconnected truck beds lined up in a big field and made up grand stories about why they were there. Questions We Asked Ourselves: Where have all the restrooms gone? People still gotta pee! Favorite activities: Population Trivia and Ghost Town Trivia. We continued our game of 'The Price is Right' to see who could get closest to the correct population of the cities we passed through. We looked up state and city facts, we compared city names and found out how many states have the same city names! The winners for each trivia question got a handful of M&M's, Skittles, or whatever we picked up at the gas stop. What are you doing this summer? Yet, here we are on the road. Winging it. We'll go as far as we decide, and have fun along the way. Day 1 we traveled from Salt Lake City, Utah to Keystone, Colorado for this episode of our family babymoon! We can't miss the opportunity to celebrate our family of 6 before we become a family of 7! We made it a full 12 hours on Day 1. Who isn't impressed with that? We stopped at a little Daily Freeze in Utah for some milkshakes, took pictures on the state line, found peaches in Palisade, we climbed the Rocky Mountains to Keystone, found Ghost Towns and played trivia! Lessons We Need to Learn: What hotels can accommodate large families with little ones? We are pretty loyal to Hyatt House and Hyatt Place because they offer one king or two queens plus a fold out couch, but we need to find more so we don't have to drive out of our way to stop for the night! Please give us your suggestions and recommendations! Favorite activities: Population Trivia and Ghost Town Trivia. Along the way we looked up the population of cities and played 'The Price is Right' to see who could get closest to the correct population. If you guessed: Panama, you’d be 100% right. After a decade of traveling with kids, Panama was our worst vacation ever! We had so many things go wrong, like:◘ One flat tire on the Panama Highway◘ Two flat tires on the Panama Highway◘ Stranded for 5 Hours◘ Renting a private car with no insurance◘ Local Contact not answering phone or responding◘ House Broken Into◘ Car sideswiped while parked◘ HarassmentAnd sure, that sounds bad, but we also had so many things go right, like:◘ Cliff jumping at Los Cajones◘ Seeing the Panama Canal in person◘ Celebrating Christmas in Panama◘ Feeding wild monkeys from the palm of our hands◘ Taking a boat out into the Panama Canal◘ Worldschooling in Central America◘ Exploring the Panama jungle and rainforest ◘ Ziplining inside a massive volcanic crater◘ Hiking in Panama City ◘ Meeting Panama Santa Claus At the end of the day, or trip if you will, while we affectionately refer to our time in Panama as our worst vacation ever, we are still so glad we went! We learned a lot from the things that went wrong, and we made incredible family memories to last a lifetime. We wouldn’t change it for the world! Not to mention, considering the current travel bans, who knows when we’ll be able to travel again! Any vacation is better than no vacation!
