Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Jim Bartoo, Marketing and Public Relations Director with Nashville Zoo, who discusses the zoo's history, growth and development, and commitment to animal welfare, along with the importance of accreditation by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. He highlights the zoo's conservation efforts, both local and global, as well as their educational programs and upcoming events. The conversation also covers the zoo's unique features, including exhibit design and animal care, and ways for the public to support and enjoy the zoo's experiences.Nashville Zoo's Philosophy and DevelopmentsDuring the interview, Jim provides an overview of Nashville Zoo's history, location, and recent developments. He explains that the zoo, which moved to its current location in 1996, has been built from the ground up, allowing for the implementation of the latest philosophies and technologies for animal care and habitat development. Jim also discusses the shift in zoo philosophy from focusing on cleanliness and sterilization to prioritizing animal welfare and creating environments that promote animal happiness and comfort.Importance of AZA Accreditation for ZoosJim discusses the importance of accreditation by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) for zoos in the United States. He explains that while all zoos must have a USDA license for animal care, AZA accreditation goes well beyond the minimum standards, focusing on animal health, veterinary care, education, and conservation efforts. This accreditation is a gold standard for animal care and is required every five years as the standards evolve. Jim emphasizes that AZA accreditation is crucial for visitors to ensure they are supporting zoos that prioritize animal welfare.Nashville Zoo's Conservation and Education EffortsJim discusses Nashville Zoo's conservation efforts, which include local and global initiatives. The zoo works with organizations like TWRA and USDA to protect streams and environments in Tennessee, conducting head start programs and monitoring waterways. Internationally, they study animal migration patterns, such as giraffe movements in Africa, to address habitat fragmentation issues. The zoo also focuses on education, offering programs for all ages and taking ambassador animals to schools and nursing homes.Nashville Zoo Upcoming EventsJim also highlights upcoming events at Nashville Zoo, including the upcoming opening of a new exhibit, Leopard Forest, the Zzzoofari Slumber camp out on May 24, Brew at the Zoo on June 13, and Summer Splash Saturdays in July and August. Jim encourages public support through memberships, donations, and corporate sponsorships to help fund new exhibits and conservation work.Visit https://www.nashvillezoo.org to learn more.

This episode Jake Belair, Nashville Zoo and the First VP of The ABMA, discusses another strategy for training behaviors: Baiting. Jake breaks down the challenges of baiting and why it shouldn't be the first option when training a behavior, however, it is still a tool in the training toolkit that has some practical applications. This episode is full of many real life behavior examples with a multitude of species including hornbills, caracals, sea lions, skunks, and clouded leopards. But make sure you tune in for Jake's "Training Tale" about how the trainers at the Nashville Zoo use their heads (literally) during Kookaburra free-flight training. Jake also gives a tease for the 2024 ABMA Annual Conference hosted by the Nashville Zoo! For questions or suggestions about the podcast email abc@theabma.org and to reach Jake contact firstvp@theabma.org Let's talk some training!

Zoos are a staple of American culture. They're an enjoyable outing for families, couples and friends and a rare opportunity to see animals that a lot of us wouldn't otherwise get to see. In recent years, many zoos have pivoted to focusing on conservation and animal welfare rather than entertainment. Here in Nashville, the Zoo says that conservation is their mission. But, what does this really mean? Today, we'll learn how the Zoo is working to bolster the hellbender salamander population in Nashville. We'll also learn how the Zoo's work relates to other conservation efforts in the city, and what we can all do to support wildlife and natural habitats in the city. But first, WPLN environmental reporter Caroline Eggers joins us to talk about the recent heat wave. Guests: Jim Bartoo, Marketing and Public Relations Director at Nashville Zoo Sherri Reinsch, Lead Herpetologist at the Nashville Zoo Monika Pretz, Staff Biologist & Pollinator Program Leader at Tennessee Environmental Council Abbey Duncan, Board Member at Native American Indian Association of TN Eleanor Lopez, Board Member at Native American Indian Association of TN This episode was produced by Elizabeth Burton. A Middle Tennessee Business PodcastI've known Jim Bartoo going back to my early days in Nashville radio. I have always known him to be at the helm of making sure our Nashville Zoo is marketed to the best ability and always be in a good light in the community. Nashvillians have come to embrace the Zoo since it's opening at its current location in 1997. Jim's biggest challenge is how to attract Nashville's influx of tourists to the Zoo, all while certainly understanding the majority demographic being of the “woo girl” partier type.I suggest something that downtown Nashville desperately needs….an RV resort on the Zoo property. We'll see if that comes to fruition. Follow Jim:https://www.linkedin.com/in/jim-bartoo-4b80377/www.nashvillezoo.org *****SUBSCRIBE/RATE/FOLLOW What's Your Problem?
