This Week in Beauty episode is dedicated to the uproar around beauty brand Youthforia and its less than inclusive Date Night Skin Tint Serum Foundation. In this episode I share a little backstory on former guest and founder of Youthforia, Fiona Co Chan; discuss the criticism of the lack of inclusive shades which saw them literally putting black pigment in a bottle and calling it a foundation; and I chat with Cosmetic Scientist and founder of cult brand MDMflow, Florence Adepoju. I'd love to know what you think - are you a fan of the brand? Does this disappoint you? Or are they already cancelled in your book? It's episode 100! Wow. It made a lot of sense for me to bring back my very first guest EVER on BeautyMe, because we have both evolved a lot since that first episode aired in June 2019. Florence Adepoju is the Founder of THREE companies - and counting - she's also helping others build their own beauty brands with https://www.famlabs.co. Before @famlabs, nine years ago Flow created MDMflow, a brand that would go on to gain iconic status due to its aesthetic being rooted in hip hop, including its collectible gold bullet lipsticks. So I invited her on for a very special Live episode for the Meet the Founder series. If you haven't checked it out already, Meet the Founder is a series that takes place exclusively on IGTV Live and the audio version goes up days later. Feel free to check out previous guests if you're planning on launching your own brand in 2022 - you can find them: https://www.instagram.com/beautymepodcast/channel/ In this episode Flow shares her tips for success, and hard work is right up there, along with a strong set of core values. Oh and she also drops a MAJOR life news bomb on me! As always do please share, subscribe, rate and review - I want to make sure the next 100 episodes are even better than what we've done so far! The Supreme Court are today announcing their judgement on the so-called "pizza test". That is whether a residential or home carer who "sleeps in" is entitled to the minimum wage. The reason it is named the "pizza test" is that they are required to be on site, and cannot leave to go and buy a pizza, even if they're not actually performing some specific caring activity. The case was brought by a highly-qualified care support worker called Clare Tomlinson-Blake. If the Supreme Court find in her favour it will have huge implications as it could cost the sector over £400 million in back pay. Anita Rani is joined by our reporter, Melanie Abbott, who has been speaking to Claire, and Christina McAnea, the general secretary of UNISON. The British multi-national consumer goods company, Unilever announced last week that it will remove the word ‘normal’ from 200 of its beauty products, in an attempt to create a ‘more inclusive definition of beauty’. They will also ban excessive editing of photos in relation to ‘body shape, size proportion and skin colour’. This includes models, as well as social media influencers who have been paid to promote its products. Florence Adepoju, founder of MDMflow and Sasha Pallari, the make-up artist who campaigned for better regulations on social media beauty advertisements, discuss why diversity in the beauty industry is important and what brands can do to work towards inclusivity. All week on Woman's Hour we have been thinking about and discussing the murder of Sarah Everard. Today Jacqueline Rose is one of the world's leading feminist literary and cultural critics discusses her new book, 'On Violence and On Violence Against Women'. The singer-songwriter and cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson has a rare sound that combines classical music and eclectic soul. She was nominated for her first MOBO Award in 2012. Her recent release 'Rise Up', featuring Akala, has become a revolutionary anthem for young Black people. Part of the WOW UK Festival, which is online now and will be running until Sunday 21st March, she joins Anita in the studio. A lover of hip-hop culture and audacious expression, Florence wanted to create a beauty brand that wasn’t afraid to be bold, while representing and serving women of colour.  In our chat, she discussed how a controversial change of degree course led to a placement in Antwerp, Belgium and how this experience opened her eyes to start-up culture. She spoke to us about taking production into her own hands (literally!) resulting in building a beauty lab in her back garden shed. Florence shares how she has leveraged her online community and how this can give you the upper hand in negotiating retail deals. She also discussed her New York Times feature, how that came about and how she prepared for that. Here’s what you’ll learn this episode: 3.01 – beauty brand faux pas in creating formulas that work on black skin, and how to correct them 5.05 – turning a final year degree project into a business and the importance of work experience in figuring out what you want from a career 13.30 – researching a journalist before interviewing with them to figure out how to wow them, as well as what you want to reveal 14.35 – producing in-house when manufacturing quotes are steep; sourcing equipment and subsidising your income during the growth period 17.25 – pricing a product using your favourites currently on the market 18.10 – making the most out of ecommerce and Google analytics to create a customer profile, and the power of retargeting 19.10 – email lists and giveaways for bringing in new business 19.30 – a Facebook group to consolidate individual conversations and further build an online community 20.32 – Fenty: friend or foe? 22.20 – deciding if you’re ready to take on staff and choosing a team structure that works for you 24.50 – the pros and cons of in-store retail, and leveraging your online community when negotiating terms 27.30 – counting the revenue streams :) 29.17 – tapping into new audiences and knowing when you’ve exhausted your existing outreach strategies 32.00 – taking a start-up business loan with flexible terms and repayment options that suit you 33.03 – how investing in Instagram and establishing an influencer circle can lead to impressive pre-order figures 35.30 – selecting the right crowd-funding target to engage support If you would like to connect with us on social media, you can find us all here: MDM Flow @MDMflow Twitter – MDM Flow Beauty Talk Facebook Group Janet’s List – @JanetsList (Instagram) and @JanetsList (Twitter) Janet Oganah: @Janet_Oganah (Twitter) Adonica Simmons: Global Style Services (Instagram)  The overall mission of Janet’s List is to connect consumers with women of colour in business.
