Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with Craig David. Since debuting with the critically acclaimed album "Born To Do It"—a genre-defining record that established Craig David as one of the UK's most beloved artists—he has remained at the forefront of his unique and authentic British sound. He has made waves worldwide as the voice of one of the most pivotal eras in UK music, bringing garage from the underground to the mainstream and becoming one of the most successful artists in UK chart history. Throughout his career, Craig has collaborated with a range of artists, including Sting, Kano, Diplo, and KSI, while also becoming one of Ibiza's biggest DJs through his TS5 soundsystem. Craig's thoughtful artistry has earned him 14 BRIT Award nominations, two GRAMMY nominations, four MOBO Awards, three Ivor Novello Awards recognizing his songwriting, and most recently, an MBE for his services to music. Since breaking onto the scene in late 1999 with the classic UK garage track "Re-Rewind", Craig has scored 25 UK Top 40 singles (16 of which are Top 10), nine UK Top 40 albums (five in the Top 10), and amassed over 5 billion streams worldwide. Additionally, Craig holds one of Ibiza's most successful and long-running residencies with Ibiza Rocks, which returned this year for its 7th season. Craig David returns with his first new music in over two years, "In Your Hands", released via Believe. This uplifting track not only highlights Craig's signature vocals but also showcases his ability to create music that touches deep emotional levels. The new single is the result of Craig spending two years in the studio working on new material, following his Top 40 collaboration with Wes Nelson on "Abracadabra" in February. Craig is set to embark on his UK Commitment Arena Tour in February 2025, with special guest Lemar. Starting at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on February 2, the 11-date tour will see Craig performing his eclectic and fan-favorite discography across the UK, culminating at the iconic O2 Arena in London on February 20 . John catches up with Bob Vylan and producer Jonny Breakwell to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the ‘Humble As The Sun'. Bob Vylan, a grime and punk rock duo who emerged in 2017. Despite facing resistance for their provocative themes on racism and inequality, they gained a loyal following. Their albums, 2020's ‘We Live Here' and 2022's ‘Bob Vylan Presents the Price of Life' earned critical acclaim, and saw the duo win Best Alternative Act at the MOBO Awards. Their latest, ‘Humble as the Sun,' sees the duo flex their musical muscles, drawing on soul, drill, and punk, brought together with their trademark intensity. Chatting in Miloco's The Pool Studio, where some of the album was recorded, the conversation includes insights into navigating the independent artist landscape and the pivotal moments balancing personal and musical life. The pair also reflect on the process of refining Bobby's initial demos into polished tracks, exploring the production techniques that enhance the depth and character of the band's sound. This week our guest host Karen Ramirez, founder of Sporting Sheroes, introduces a powerful concept: “No doesn't mean no, it means not over.” Inspired by Kanya King, founder of the MOBO Awards, Karen explores the idea that setbacks and “no” moments in sports and life are not definitive endings but rather opportunities for new beginnings. She reflects on recent sports events, emphasizing the resilience showcased by athletes and coaches in the face of challenges. Karen uses examples like the GB Women's Hockey Team's Olympic qualification and Sarina Wiegman's contract extension to illustrate how setbacks can lead to renewed determination and fresh possibilities. She introduces a three-pillar framework—investment, belief, and coaching of skills and mindset—to guide individuals and sports organizations in navigating their paths to success.

TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ BOBBY & STEVE (GROOVE ODYSSEY) # 093 - PART 2 A visit to Larry Levan's world renowned Paradise Garage club in 1987, just three months before the club closed its doors forever, gave them their first taste of a new sound, later dubbed 'Garage' music, a sound which American jocks such as Levan, Frankie Knuckles and Tony Humphries were championing. Evolving from the more soulful and gospel parts of disco, US garage music, with its soaring vocals, intricate melodies and jazzy instrumentals, captured the ears of the twins. They had found their sound - dance music that still contained their beloved soulful influences. Klub Zoo was instrumental in planting the UK roots for what became more commonly referred to as ‘house music'. Inspired by what they had witnessed in NYC, Bobby & Steve wasted no time in launching their iconic new brand ‘Garage City'. Hailed as the UK's most established house night it was renowned for playing the best in soulful, funky and uplifting US garage, this side of the Atlantic. Joined regularly by the biggest names from the house spectrum such as Masters at Work, Kerri Chandler, Tony Humphries, Eric Morillo, Todd Terry and Danny Tenaglia, to name but a few. Telstar Records released various Garage City compilation albums mixed by Bobby & Steve and to mark its ten-year anniversary Defected Records released a ‘10 Years of Garage City' album also mixed by the duo. The iconic club Fabric in London hosted its 10th birthday party. Garage City also enjoyed successful seasons at Ibiza super club Es Paradis. The growing success of house music alongside their outstanding reputation as both DJ's and promoters placed them in high demand throughout the nineties. Bobby & Steve were regular guest DJ's at the biggest club nights across the globe. They founded their ‘Summervibes Dance Weekenders' which were a sell out each time and launched their own record labels producing their own tracks as well as for artists such as Leroy Burgess. They were in high demand on the remix side, reworking tracks for the likes of Faith Evans on behalf of P Diddy's Bad Boy Records. In 1997 they were nominated for a MOBO Award and in 2001 they travelled to Asia to DJ at the MTV Asia Music Awards party. The new millennium brought about a new chapter for Bobby & Steve and in that same year they launched their new night Soul Heaven at the Ministry of Sound as well as a weekly Ibiza residency at the illustrious El Divino. At the Ministry launch night, the twins joined by Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez played to over two thousand party people with a further one thousand queuing outside. The brand went from strength to strength with Defected Records releasing a ‘Soul Heaven' compilation mixed by the Bobby & Steve. In 2008 alongside their business partner Michael Hughes, the new powerhouse ‘Groove Odyssey' record label and club event was created. Ten years strong, the brand's label is churning out original releases and compilation albums to critical acclaim. The Groove Odyssey club night holds a residency at the Ministry of Sound with guests including David Morales, Louie Vega, Dimitri from Paris, Terry Hunter and Joey Negro with further dates being announced around the country and further afield. 2017 saw Groove Odyssey embark on a white isle adventure and their hugely successful GO Ibiza weekender, has been running for three years now and kicks off the island's summer season in May with the line-up for 2020 soon to be released. The five-day event hosts hundreds of clubbers from around the globe alongside an unrivalled line up of the biggest and best DJ's from the house music fraternity. In 2020 life takes a big change with the Covid Pandemic hitting all, in the early part before the lockdown began both Bobby and Steve contracted Covid. Listen to the story unfold how they both coped with the virus and how they are today.

Rap Gets Real

Seriously…

Rap is changing. High profile UK artists such as Stormzy and Dave are shunning the genre's dominant tropes of hypermasculinity and aggression. Instead they're putting their battles with mental illness at the forefront of their music. From North America, Drake, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar are proving it's ok - and commercially viable - to be vulnerable. References to mental health in rap lyrics have more than doubled in the last two decades. With black men the demographic most likely to suffer from mental illness – and also the least likely to seek help – the MOBO Award-winning rapper, author and broadcaster Guvna B assesses the extent to which rap now actively tackles this epidemic. For Guvna B, this is deeply personal. When his Dad passed away a few years ago, he sank into a depression and subsequently suffered a mental breakdown. Looking back now on his childhood and upbringing, with the help of his lifelong best friend Joe, he reflects on possible causes of his breakdown and on the progress he's made through writing so openly and honestly. Mike Silvera from the charity Mind explains why black men are affected disproportionately by mental health issues. The veteran hip hop MC / producer Nigel Cudjoe (Asaviour aka Savvy) recalls how other artists have enabled him to share his innermost feelings. Leading UK rapper Che Lingo reveals how his very personal lyrics have “literally saved people's lives”. And BBC Radio 1Xtra's Remi Burgz considers whether this new era of emotional rap is a passing fad - or here to stay.
