In 1998, eight months into Tony Blair's government, seven gay and bisexual working-class men from Bolton were convicted at Crown Court of buggery and gross indecency for having consensual sex together in a private home. No victim. No complaint. Some went to prison. All were placed on the sex offenders register. The laws used against them dated back to 1895, and in one case to 1533. Greater Manchester Police, the same force that prosecuted Alan Turing, pursued this case with a fervour no other police force in the country was matching at the time. Almost nobody knows this happened. Hugh Sheehan is the writer and audio producer behind Criminally Queer: The Bolton 7, the five-part BBC Sounds documentary series that spent years in the making and is referenced in Russell T Davies' Channel 4 drama Tip Toe, starring Alan Cumming as a gay bar owner in Manchester's Gay Village. Davies made Tip Toe because, in his words, the fight is back on. He's right. And the Bolton Seven are a significant part of why. In this episode of Outcast World, Graeme and Hugh cover the full story: the centuries-old laws that remained quietly on the books after partial decriminalisation in 1967, the two-man rule that made consensual group sex a criminal act regardless of what straight people were doing, the class dimension that meant working-class men from Bolton had no legal defences that a wealthier man in a privately owned home might have had, and the Chief Constable whose fundamentalist homophobia had shaped Greater Manchester Police for over a decade before the Bolton Seven were ever arrested. Criminally Queer: The Bolton 7 is available on BBC Sounds, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.

The Prime Minister and Hampshire's Chief Constable insist there is no two-tier policing. But Hampshire Police's own documents, in black and white, explicitly state that officers must not treat people the same or be colourblind. Officers who underwent the force's mandatory DEI training reported feeling pressured — afraid to say the wrong thing. One in five feared being rejected for speaking their minds. Is this institutionalised groupthink running through policing, the NHS, the civil service, and more?Brendan O'Neill argues that Keir Starmer is not protecting Henry Nowak's legacy — he is using it as a political shield to deflect scrutiny from the very policies that shaped this tragedy. Nigel Farage was heckled in the Commons while bringing up many people's experience of two-tier policing. Yet in 2020, the same political class praised Black Lives Matter rage from the rooftops.Kemi Badenoch, fresh from a meeting with Henry's family, makes the case for sweeping away identity politics entirely — and explains why consistency under the law, not special treatment for any group, is the only path forward.Plus: Lord Mann's report recommends banning all political badges in the NHS — and Julia asks why anyone ever thought that was acceptable in the first place.Julia Hartley-Brewer broadcasts on Talk from Monday to Thursday, 10AM to 1PM.Available on YouTube and streaming platforms, along with DAB+ radio and your smart speaker. Photo: Members of the MMIW Search & Hope Alliance attend a cadaver session led by Dr. William Borman, in Portland, Oreg. Thursday, January 22, 2026. (Brian Bull / Buffalo's Fire) Search teams working on Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) cases must prepare themselves for the likelihood they will come across a body. One group based in Portland, Oreg. is proactively preparing volunteers for that encounter, as Brian Bull of Buffalo's Fire reports. Inside an anatomy lab, William Borman, professor of basic sciences for the University of Western States, carefully turns a cadaver over on a metal table. Metal canopies cover human cadavers inside Linfield University's anatomy lab in Portland, Oreg. Thursday, January 22, 2026. (Photo: Brian Bull / Buffalo's Fire) A tinge of formaldehyde fills the air. Seven volunteers with the group, MMIW Search & Hope Alliance, examine its tendons, nerves, and organs. Kimberly Lining is the group's founder. She says she has seen death up close many times. “And I think through my years of traumatic experiences with violent death, I’ve seen a lot, it’s prepared me. I think just due to fire, like steel is forged through fire.” But for most people, exposure to death and corpses is not a recurring thing, so Lining reached out to Borman to arrange a visit. Not only does it gird people for when they find a body, but it helps them discern between human and animal remains. Two volunteers, Sabrina Griffith and Isabella Regalado, say they would recommend this experience. “Just seeing the veins, the actual ligaments, the bone, the muscles, it was quite surprising to see it and feel it in real life. I've only touched bones and stuff like that, so it’s very interesting to actually feel the inner part of our body.” “It’s actually been better than anticipated. I thought it would be a little bit more gruesome, but everyone has been very professional and understanding, and everyone has been doing their best to educate everyone else.” Lining and Borman remind people that viewing cadavers is not the same as coming across a corpse, whether that is in the wilderness or city. Such bodies are not preserved, and beyond what the cause of death inflicted, would be subject to the elements and scavengers. “If it’s in the wilderness, in the forest, bears, cougars, wolves … they’re gonna tear at stuff and leave the bone. So definitely pieces more than together.” Near the end of the visit, Borman sprayed a blue hydrating liquid to keep the cadavers from drying out and developing mold. He said everyone in Lining's group was respectful and asked great questions. “I’m pleased that we were able to make this happen. If she were interested in doing it again, I'd be open to doing it again.” Lining and her volunteers gave small gifts of gratitude to Borman and thanked him for his time. MMIW Search & Hope Alliance is preparing for two search efforts in the next few weeks. Jon Boutcher, Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, is asked about the arrest of Máire Mhic an Fhailí during a Policing Board meeting in September 2025. (Courtesy Policing Board / Facebook). An Irish language activist has won a landmark decision in Northern Ireland following her arrest during a protest. Seo McPolin has more from Ireland. Seventy-four-year-old grandmother Máire Mhic an Fhailí attended a peaceful protest in support of the Palestinian people last August in Belfast. She was among those arrested under the UK’s controversial Terrorism Laws because of her t-shirt. JJ Ó Dochartaigh from the Irish language band Kneecap wore the same T-shirt as Máire Mhic an Fhailí ahead of the band's 2025 Glastonbury set. (Courtesy Kneecap / X) During the arrest, English-speaking police officers were unable to understand her as she gave them her address – because she spoke in her Indigenous language of Irish. The Police Ombudsman ruled last week that the arresting officer should have taken reasonable steps to arrange a translation service – and that Mhic an Fhailí experienced “oppressive behavior”. The police watchdog also issued a policy recommendation for future engagements with Irish-language speakers. Mhic an Fhailí’s lawyer says this decision “puts a marker down” for how the police service must respect the Irish language moving forward. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. We've got a government led by Keir Starmer that's already performed 14 U-turns. Fourteen. Even his own party don't know what they stand for now, other than heading for an electoral wipe-out.  Whatever happened to common sense?  Today, the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police has been sacked — yet the truth is there are still far too many clowns running our public institutions. Just look around you. The water industry is a mess. Trains don't work. Gas and electricity bills are out of control. Nothing functions as it should. Then there's the prisons crisis, two-tier justice, and talk of scrapping trial by jury. Immigration — legal and illegal — is clearly out of control and the public have had enough of being ignored.  The establishment has failed. Completely. So the real question is this: how do we take our country back and put it right?

STARMER MUST SACK TOP COP OVER ISLAMIST FOOTBALL LIES #JonGauntTV #LIVE #TwoTierPolicing #CraigRutherford #WestMidlandsPolice #Starmer #ShabanaMahmood #IslamistExtremism #Antisemitism #JewHate This is the scandal that blows apart the myth of "policing without fear or favour". In sworn evidence, West Midlands Chief Constable Craig Rutherford admitted that police intelligence was shaped to fit a decision already made — to ban Tel Aviv football fans from Villa Park. Why? Because the truth was inconvenient. It has now emerged that the real and serious threat came not from Israeli supporters, but from Islamist extremists in Birmingham, some allegedly armed and openly threatening violence against Jews attending the match. Let that sink in. Instead of confronting the real danger, police chiefs pointed the finger at the victims, dressed it up as "risk management" and expected nobody to notice. This is two-tier policing in black and white. Lie to justify a ban. Downplay Islamist threats. Sacrifice Jewish fans to avoid "community tensions". And now the spotlight turns to politics. Kemi Badenoch has called for Rutherford's sacking. So why hasn't Keir Starmer acted? Why is Shabana Mahmood, responsible for policing oversight, still sitting on her hands? If a Chief Constable can admit misleading evidence in open proceedings and keep his job, then the system is rotten from top to bottom. This show will call it exactly what it is: A disgrace. A cover-up. And a test of whether Britain still believes in equal justice under the law. No apologies. No censorship. No establishment protection racket. Sack the cop. TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️ These podcasts examine and discuss suicide and associated trauma. If you have been affected by anything in these podcasts, you can contact the Samaritans on 116 123 For several years now, the levels of mental health and well-being within the UK police have been in decline. Many will argue that this is a result of an ever-increasing workload, a reduction in capacity and experience, underfunding, and a perception that social and mainstream media proactively portray a negative narrative of law enforcement within the UK. Additionally, lenient sentencing, poor organizational practices, and the disproportionate time spent on officers under investigation have contributed to create a perfect storm. In this short series of podcasts, I will be looking at the rising trend of police officers taking their own lives. I will be speaking with a variety of people to put a spotlight on police suicide, the reasons behind it, and hopefully how we can halt its rise. In this episode I talk with the former Chief Constable of Lancashire Constabulary and the current programme director of Oscar' Kilo, Andy Rhodes OBE QPM. DCT Audio

23 years after its emergence, the PSNI is still less than one third Catholic and the numbers attempting to join are according to the Chief Constable "below what's needed". Its latest recruitment campaign attracted a total of 3,500 applications but only 27% are perceived to be Catholic. The PSNI was born out of the Patten reforms of the old RUC but the changes which reforms brought about were painful for many who saw them as a betrayal. The controversial 50/50, Catholic / Protestant recruitment policy was seen as discrimination against Protestants. Allison Morris joins Ciarán Dunbar to explain the background of the PSNI and the current difficulties it faces. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I first became aware of Wunmi Mosaku at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Her feature, His House, premiered there and not only was the film itself exquisite, but Mosaku herself was a top-tier interview, brimming with passion and enthusiasm for her craft. From that point on, I've made it a priority to seek out Mosaku's past work and keep up with all of her new releases, and it's paid off big time.Since His House's release on Netflix, Mosaku became a scene-stealer in Lovecraft Country, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe via Loki, she did her first voice performance for the acclaimed animated series Scavengers Reign, and now, for the very first time, she's at the top of the call sheet for a series, ITV's Passenger, which is now available to stream on BritBox.Mosaku leads as Riya, a former Metropolitan Police officer who decides to relocate to the tiny town of Chadder Vale to care for her mother-in-law. After the one-two punch of a gruesome discovery and a strange disappearance, Riya becomes convinced that something isn't quite right in Chadder Vale. However, her Chief Constable, Linda (Jo Hartley), refuses to entertain any of Riya's theories. She's far too focused on maintaining the town's reputation and winning Best Kept Village. But is it all a facade? Are past troubles and recent unsettling events uncovering the sinister truth of Chadder Vale? Riya is determined to find out. With all six episodes of Passenger Season 1 now available to stream on BritBox, Mosaku took the time to make her second appearance on Collider Ladies Night. After recapping many key credits during her last Ladies Night interview, this time around, the focus fell heavily on her growing voice and presence in film and television, and how she aims to use them.
