Welcome to Purposely SHORT, a weekly episode, featuring one of our friends or past guests and their expertise on a certain topic. This week's episode features Debra Allcock Tyler CEO of the Directory of Social Change UK. Debra shares insights into leading with authenticity and the continuous journey of personal and professional growth. Imposter Syndrome: Debra discusses how many people experience imposter syndrome, noting that it's a common feeling, unlike the overconfidence seen in a few individuals. Leadership Evolution: She talks about how her approach to leadership has changed over time, focusing on continuous learning and adapting to new workplace environments. Human Relationships: Debra emphasizes the importance of paying attention to human relationships rather than just job titles, recognizing that personal experiences and emotions impact workplace interactions. Authentic Leadership: She explores the idea of authenticity in leadership, comparing it to parenting. Authenticity should align with the responsibilities of the role, instead of personal issues. Role Clarity: Debra encourages leaders to stay true to their roles by inspiring and guiding their teams towards a common goal.

Sir Keir Starmer has made his speech on the penultimate day of the Labour Party Conference, and his first as prime minister. He's pledged “national renewal”, homes for all veterans who need them, and defended the unpopular cut to winter fuel payments.  At the centre of his speech was “change” that Labour will bring, but are we any clearer on what that vision is? What was the speech really about? Will it change the course of the government and how people think about the Labour Party? And did it touch on what people were really looking for from the first Labour prime minister in 14 years?  Joining Cathy Newman from the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool is Leader of the House of Lords, Angela Smith, General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, Nicola Ranger, and, Chief UK Political Commentator for the Financial Times, Robert Shrimsley.    Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Shaheen Sattar, Sarah Beale, Rob Thomson.

Send us a textExpect to get the everyday perspective on Michael's challenge to raise awareness of the inequality of the UK family court system, his own experience in the system, the impact it had on him financially and emotionally, what needs to change and much more. Family courts should be reformed in order to serve parents with more equality and fairness. False allegations should be held as perjury and shared custody should be the initial starting point; the burden of proof should be on why that cannot be the case. A 2019 study by Child Law Practice showed that 70% of false abuse allegations are made during family court custody disputes, demonstrating the dire need for reform.Family court restructuring is not just a matter of justice system transparency but also critical to protect the rights and well-being of the children involved. The Psychological Association has highlighted that children fare better in shared custody arrangements, making it crucial to make this the default presumption. If we believe in fairness, in protecting our children, and in the essential role both parents play in a child's life, then we must call upon our representatives to enact meaningful change in our family court systems. Let's ensure future generations have a fair and robust system to rely on. On the eve of the election, we find ourselves once again asking the question "how did it end up like this" and immediately responding to ourselves with "liberals", this time through the lens of one of the most banal interviews ever conducted of a political heavyweight from Change UK, a party that you can definitely still vote for in the election after it's founding maybe 6 whole years ago. Also, we give our thoughts on why engaging with the entire process of the electoral system in TYOOL 2024 is pointless unless you want to maybe make a labour candidate sad, because it otherwise offers nothing else in the way of material betterment. In less than a month's time, Britain may well have a new prime minister – and a different ruling party. Under 14 years of the Conservative party, the UK's approach to China has swung from the sycophancy of the golden era to fear and loathing under Liz Truss, stabilising in the last couple of years to a compete but engage approach, all while public opinion on China has hardened following the Hong Kong protests and the pandemic. What will a new government bring? Will the managerialism of Keir Starmer change UK-China relations much from the managerialism of Rishi Sunak? This is not a hypothetical question as Labour looks set to win the election and the question, now, is how big the Conservative losses will be. "COP27: Ukraine a reason to act fast on climate change - Rishi Sunak The war in Ukraine is a reason to act faster to tackle climate change, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has told the UN climate summit COP27. ""Climate and energy security go hand-in-hand,"" he said in his first international appearance since taking office. Leaders from 120 countries are meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt to discuss next steps in curbing climate change. Key topics are compensation and support for the most-affected countries. ADVERTISEMENT ""Putin's abhorrent war in Ukraine and rising energy prices across the world are not a reason to go slow on climate change. They are a reason to act faster,"" Mr Sunak said. ""We can bequeath our children a greener planet and a more prosperous future [...] There really is room for hope,"" he added. In a series of speeches, leaders urged rich countries to stay the course in stopping further climate change, despite the war in Ukraine and global financial problems. Nations on the front line of climate change laid out the stark impacts of higher temperatures, drought, and floods on people and the environment. ""We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator,"" UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told the summit. His stark warning was echoed by former US vice-president and environmentalist Al Gore who said nations must ""stop subsiding the culture of death"" of fossil fuels. In an energetic speech French President Emmanuel Macron urged world leaders to deliver climate justice. Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is also in Egypt and said countries should not ""go weak and wobbly"" on climate action. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said switching to renewable energy was ""a security policy imperative"", while Italy's new prime minister Giorgia Meloni said her country remained ""strongly committed"" to its climate goals. US President Joe Biden is due to arrive at the summit on Friday, while John Kerry, his special envoy for the climate, is already in attendance. Though Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg is staying away from the summit, after she accused the UN of ""green-washing"", many other youth activists are in Sharm el-Sheikh. Xiye Batista portrait in the conference room IMAGE SOURCE,XIYE BASTIDA Image caption, Xiye Bastida is an indigenous climate activist from Mexico Xiye Bastida, a 20-year-old activist from Mexico, is there to tell decision-makers that ""nature must be protected"". She told BBC News she's pleased with progress so far in Egypt - including getting the words ""loss and damage"" on the agenda. The terms refer to money - as some form of compensation or reparations - for the effects of climate change on developing countries that did little to cause the problem. Why the latest UN meeting matters What have leaders done on climate change in 2022? But 24-year-old Mikaela Loach, from Scotland, said she's worried leaders are not fully committed to climate action that prioritises justice or human rights. ""Not all climate solutions are good for people. It's not just about cutting emissions, we must frame all our work about people and the world we are creating,"" she told BBC News. Barbados PM Mia Mottley spoke of ""horror and the devastation wrecked upon this Earth"" in the past year. ""Whether the apocalyptic floods in Pakistan, or the heatwaves from Europe to China, or indeed in the last few days in my own region, the devastation caused in Belize by tropical storm Lisa, or the torrential floods a few days ago in St Lucia. We don't need to repeat it,"" she said. The fact that the summit is taking place in Africa, a continent that is extremely vulnerable to climate change, was repeated through the day. Kenyan President William Ruto said time is of the essence: ""Further delay will make us busy spectators as calamity wipes out lives and livelihoods."" Up to 700 million people in Africa will be displaced due to lack of water by 2030, he explained. Tuesday w

She has been the target of industrial and criminal abuse and threats (several men have been fined or gone to jail). Shadow minister for Mental Health under Corbyn she resigned after Brexit, joined the breakaway independent group of MPs in 2019 that became the doomed Change UK, then joined the Lib Dems – it's hard to keep up, but now she is in public relations and has two small children, and the party is more united under a new leader. And she's still young female and Jewish - does that rule out a return to Parliament?

On 4th October 2021, Pope Francis and leaders from other faiths gathered to appeal for robust commitments from political leaders in the run up to COP26 (2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference). Chris Trott, the UK's ambassador to the Holy See, shares his views on the significance of this extraordinary gathering and its highly consequential nature. The Pope has been a long-standing voice on matters pertaining to sustainability. In 2015, he issued an encyclical called Laudato si' in which he called for care for our common home and decried environmental destruction. On 25 September 2015, Pope Francis addressed the UN General Assembly and he made the appeal for a common plan for our common home. On that day, world leaders adopted Agenda 2030 and the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  The UK is hosting COP26 right now and Chris Trott shares a unique insight into the importance of faith communities in helping drive positive change by advocating for responsible behaviour towards climate. Economist Jeffrey Sachs, an expert in sustainable development, noted a few years back that “Pope Francis has been a champion, together with other religious leaders who are, of course looked to for guidance and admired worldwide within their faiths and well beyond their particular faiths, in helping the world to understand why sustainable development is the challenge of our time.”   This episode of The Do One Better Podcast underscores this view and provides unique and timely insight during COP26 and in the face of the climate crisis. Chuka has had a varied career which has involved being a public figure for much of the last 10 years. The common thread running through his two-decade career, first in corporate law, then in public policy, and now back in business has been desire to build a better and more responsible capitalism in which all citizens have stake. The son of an entrepreneur, from a mixed heritage family, he has observed how he would not have had the opportunities he had were it not for the power of enterprise. Not afraid to try new enterprises in politics and to challenge group think and tribalism, he was one of a number of MPs who left the main parties to set up the new party, Change UK. He switched to the Liberal Democrats before leaving politics. For any organisation to thrive, Chuka believes internal challenge is vital, as is an understanding that success is not all about any one individual but a group. But any group needs a leader to lead and bring decisions to a head.Top Tip - Draw up a strategy – which will always evolve - and then focus laser like on the tactical execution of it, whilst having a ‘Plan B’ if ‘Plan A’ doesn’t work out.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

With problems in Parliament trying to get consensus on a withdrawal agreement, it seemed the main political parties were edging away from the centre ground. Did this leave a vacuum for a new movement? In 2019, more or less simultaneously, a new party started and a new campaign launched, both supporting a so-called People's Vote on any Brexit deal. The Independent Group - or Change UK, as they came to be known - was not without challenges. Neither was the People's Vote campaign. Eventually, the friction came to be personal. Mark Mardell speaks to the people involved about where it all went wrong. Email: worldatone@bbc.co.uk. Twitter: #BBCWATO

Some major Yair news is announced, in addition to some news about the new album by RP house band 'Crazy Moose', but the best part of the episode is dedicated to The Independent Group For Change, The Independent Group, Change UK, For Change Underscore Now, The Independents, Water UK and the various other permutations of the new centrist party formed this February by former Labour MPs Mike Gapes, Chris Leslie & some other nerds, who were shortly joined by more Tories and managed to keep it together - just about - for a couple of months or so. This is the autopsy and the great grave-pissing, where we look at the failure of the CUK Party and (spoiler) conclude - unlike the Guardian's podcast on the same subject - that there is not, in fact, a big space for a new centrist movement in the political landscape.

This year has seen ongoing turmoil at Westminster, the date on which Britain leaves the EU deferred and two new political parties founded and fielding candidates – Change UK and the Brexit Party. It is frequently claimed that we are seeing a realignment in British politics. But is that claim borne out among women voters? And, how do the varied concerns of women fit into a conversation that is so often dominated by men? We look at what light electoral research, opinion polling and focus groups might shed on the way different groups of women voters are currently thinking. As part of a BBC season about mental health, tomorrow we hear from a 40 year old woman who lives with Dissociative Identity Disorder. We're calling her Melanie and she was first diagnosed aged 22. She explains her diagnosis as being like a set of Russian dolls. She, Melanie, is the main doll and inside her are lots of other dolls, her alternative personalities. She feels her DID helped her as a child when she suffered repeated sexual abuse but living with it as an adult is challenging. The Farm, the title of Joanne Ramos's debut novel, refers to a Golden Oaks, a luxury retreat where women get the very best of everything provided they dedicate themselves to producing the perfect baby. For someone else. Joanne Ramos joins Jane to talk about the rights and wrongs of surrogacy, being an immigrant, nannies who rarely get to see their own children and the myths and reality of the American dream.
