In our fast-paced society, people rely on symbols to guide their decisions. This makes propaganda a powerful force, as it streamlines information processing. Brands capitalize on our need for these cognitive shortcuts by virtue signaling to project shared values, causing consumerism to shift from an act of self-expression to one of tribalism. We discuss cognitive dissonance and societal polarization resulting from the culture war, featuring brands like Disney, Tesla, Budweiser, Dove, Nike, and more. On this episode Coach Jenny shares insight and guidance on what she calls “The Comparison Game”. Whether it’s coveting a body type, wardrobe trends, home decor or career successes, we’re reminded that the pressure of comparing ourselves to others can steal our joy and deplete our true sense of self worth. In today’s world of social media making everyone else’s lives look seemingly and effortlessly perfect, Jenny takes us through 8 practical ways to break the cycle and to once and for all stop comparing yourself to others. It’s no easy feat, but if we can commit to daily practices of being grateful and present, we can take a stand against the notion that life is like Instagram; while recognizing we all have our own timelines, goals, struggles and strengths. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
For my first podcast of Season 2, I’m interviewing Rosie Molinary. The author of Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self Acceptance. Click here to read my review of her book! Rosie serves as a national Dove Self-Esteem Project educator, offers workshops and retreats, and speaks on self-acceptance, body image, self-care, the Latina experience, non-profit management, and intentional living around the country. She earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College and a BA in African-American Studies and Urban Education Issues from Davidson College. Show notes: http://tamihackbarth.com/episode11/
Donna and Rachel are friends who aren’t afraid to ask questions, laugh loudly, obsess freely and covet vintage items. The pair created the Smart Mouth Life Podcast to celebrate women who run their mouths and the world. Today's episode features Rosie Molinary, the author of Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self Acceptance and Hijas Americanas: Beauty, Body Image, and Growing Up Latina. Rosie serves as a national Dove Self-Esteem Project educator and is a committed activist who helped to establish HAMMERS, a non-profit initiative to provide emergency home repair for low income families in her community, and Circle de Luz, a non-profit that radically empowers young Latinas by supporting their transformation through extensive mentoring, holistic programming and scholarship funds for further education.
This week's hiatus lecture is a look at Dove's rather brilliant Self Esteem campaign and the first four videos created by the Steven Universe crew for it. You can catch us on Twitter @nothinbutstatic or mail@nothingbutstatic.co.uk
When Rosie Molinary was looking in the mirror at her frizzy, unruly hair in the dead of summer and freaking out over what product would 'tame the mane,' she had an epiphany: 'I have bought into the beauty myth of what society says I should look like.' She told herself, 'I'm going to work with boys in an alternative school. Not one of them will care about the texture of my hair, but they will care about how I will make them feel. Who am I trying to get approval from?' And she set down her straightener and walked out the door as her natural, beautiful self... already good enough. Rosie is the champion of 'radical self-acceptance' -- the belief that you are worthy enough just for being born and the idea that you don't have to do ANYTHING to prove your worth. Radical self-acceptance is the choice to not have an adversarial relationship with yourself. Instead, you choose to accept your own humanity in the same way you accept the humanity of others. Tune in as we discuss how to practice radical self-acceptance using examples from Rosie's life, including her experience growing up with brown skin in a predominantly white neighborhood, what really surprised her when she wrote her first book Hijas Americanas: Beauty, Body Image, and Growing Up Latina (Seal Press), and how she handles difficult questions from people, like her adoption of a boy from Ethiopia. Rosie believes 'we can teach people who aren't in the same place as us a better way to use language for the future.' Her book Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self Acceptance (Seal Press), is an ideal tool to walk yourself through daily practices of self-acceptance, sure to induce 'spiral ups' and more self-compassion in your Body Kindness journey. --- About Rosie As a radical self-acceptance champion, Rosie Molinary uses profound questions and wholehearted connection to empower people to treat themselves well so they can connect with their talents and passions to authentically and intentionally live their purpose and help heal the world. The author of Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self Acceptance (Seal Press) and Hijas Americanas: Beauty, Body Image, and Growing Up Latina (Seal Press), Rosie teaches at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, serves as a national Dove Self-Esteem Project educator, offers workshops and retreats, and speaks on self-acceptance, body image, self-care, media literacy, the Latina experience, and intentional living around the country. Rosie also serves as a creative catalyst to companies and brands that wish to provide a synergistic, empowered and soulful experience to their clients and employees as they serve the world through workshop and retreat facilitation and consultation. A committed activist, Rosie helped found HAMMERS, a non-profit initiative to provide emergency home repair for low income families in her community, and Circle de Luz, a non-profit that radically empowers young Latinas by supporting their transformation through extensive mentoring, holistic programming and scholarship funds for further education. Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.
When girls feel good about who they are, including how they look, they are powerful. But how can girls and women of any age feel self-confident when they're constantly bombarded by fabricated images that leave them feeling dissatisfied with their bodies? Annie talks with writer and body image activist, Sharon Haywood, about what parents (and moms, especially) can do to help their daughters develop a positive body image, even if Mom herself struggles with body image issues. About Sharon Haywood (@Sharon_Haywood) Sharon Haywood is a freelance writer and editor who combines her love of the written word with her passion for body image activism and feminism. She regularly writes for Herizons, and has contributed to "Fifty Shades of Feminism" (Virago). In 2009, Sharon joined the London-based AnyBody team, part of the international movement Endangered Bodies, which inspired her to organize Endangered Species: Preserving the Female Body in Buenos Aires, one of five international summits held in March 2011. From 2009-2014, she was co-editor for http://AdiosBarbie.com, a website promoting healthy body image and identity for people of all sizes, ages, races, cultures, abilities, and sexual identities and orientations.
