The Huskers get their first win in the Matt Rhule era, with a 35-11 win over Northern Illinois. Gabe Ervin & Rhamir Johnson both suffer season-ending injuries, Anthony Grant now goes from the doghouse to the bell cow.
The Husker247 HypeCast returns on Thursday following Nebraska's first win of 2023 and to get the fans fired up for Louisiana Tech and the Huskers chances of getting back to .500. Making her HypeCast debut is Channel 8 Sports Anchor Lauren Michelsen, who jumps right into things as the group discusses Nebraska's quarterback situation, its offense without running backs Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson and who could break out on that side of the ball. From there its defense and what Nash Hutmacher is doing, who has stood out so far and how the Huskers have built so much depth in a short amount of time. Then predictions. There's some doozies in the oddly specific category followed by some traditional picks to click and finally a clean sweep of game predictions. It's never easy for Nebraska football and that remains true following the news of the week with the Huskers now down two running backs for the season. The Husker247 trio got together on Tuesday morning to discuss how the injuries of Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson affect the season ahead and where things sit following Nebraska's win. Conversation shifts from running back to receiver to tight end and even offensive line as Michael Bruntz and Brian Christopherson take turns walking through the offense and each unit, discussing how things have looked for the Huskers. How much changes without those running backs for either Heinrich Haarberg or Jeff Sims? Can Thomas Fidone become a focal point of Nebraska's passing attack? Has so much happened everywhere else that we've largely forgotten about the offensive line? Then it's time to talk defense and Bruntz along with Mike Schaefer work through how well things went against Northern Illinois, which new defenders have emerged this week and how Tony White has built a system that allows new players to step in and look like seasoned veterans. Finally a little recruiting talk as the Huskers have their first visit weekend for a home game this season. Could Nebraska steal Brandon Baker? Who is the big competition for Jayshawn Ross? What's the latest with Caleb Benning? To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. This Monday Night Therapy episode was a mixed bag. Nebraska played excellent football (or as well as we've seen for a while) against Northern Illinois in a 35-11 victory. There is plenty of discussion and comments about the game, including how much fun it was (for me) to not freak out every time the offense snapped the ball. Did you know Heinrich Haarberg's nickname is “H”?? That does not sound like a nickname. There's plenty of discussion about whether Jeff Sims should start Saturday's game against Louisiana Tech. Todd says, yes, that Sims should start. He doesn't necessarily defend Sims, but he tells us what he believes is going to happen. Unfortunately, the news today is that running backs Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson are out for the season, along with defensive back Dwight Bootle. This leads to a lot of discussion about the running back room, including whether Jeff Sims should be moved to running back. That answer is a resounding “NO” because we'll still need healthy quarterbacks to get through this season. GET A HOODIE! Use Discount code WIN123 for 15% off until September 22nd.

Nebraska has the longest bowl drought of any Power Five team. As a result, there were significant changes made in Lincoln this offseason. They brought in former Baylor and Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule. To help break down the Cornhuskers' moves and preview their season, The Athletic's Mitch Sherman joins James Neveau. They talk about the return of running back tandem in Anthony Grant and Gabe Ervin. They also discuss how adding dual-threat quarterback Jeff Sims from Georgia Tech can help them this season.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
-It was a Spring Game remembered more for the 8 turnovers (6 fumbles, 2 INTs) than any big play, on a cold, windy day at Memorial Stadium -Jeff Sims looked solid at QB, going 9/13 passing and a nice rushing TD also in the red zone. The play of the other QBs was…not great -Definitely saw some potential in young players defensively like Princewill Umanmielen and Maverick Noonan, among others….what else from Saturday stood out? -The running backs all did well, but Anthony Grant was the best of the bunch. However, Gabe Ervin got the starting nod -Nebraska might have the fullback position figured out! -The offensive line looked the same as it has been for the past few years -The kicking game started out good, but then slightly declined Show sponsored by GANA TRUCKINGAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Runningback Gabe Ervin Jr. joined Jessica Coody for the spring game edition of Cornhusker Conversation.
-Rhule said that the team is further ahead than they thought they'd be at this point, which brings natural optimism to the common fan about what is going on under new leadership -Rhule did say that the ball was on the ground too much offensively and on special teams, saying that fumbles are controllable---what else stood out? -This was their second live scrimmage of the spring, with their first being on April 1st. There were a lot of people in attendance, including Gov. Jim Pillen -The quarterbacks were also live; the current pecking order in the backfield is Jeff Sims is the starter, Heinrich Haarberg at 2nd string and Chubba Purdy is the 3rd string QB -Billy Kemp IV and Marcus Washington are noted as the top two receivers -Gabe Ervin had a very good scrimmage -Also, Alante Brown announces he'll enter the transfer portal…Sip will be said to see the ‘best player in Chicago' no longer be on the squad -Coach Busch explains the value of the one's going up against the one's in practices and live scrimmages Show sponsored by GANA TRUCKINGAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
-Sip was at practice yesterday and was able to watch about 40 minutes of practice…what did he see that was any different from last week or that he didn't watch from last week? -Also, new QB Jeff Sims spoke after practice and said the transition has been “pretty smooth” so far.. -And Matt Rhule said he's proud of the work so far from the team…what else did Rhule say? -There are currently 12 offensive lineman on the roster, but this allows the team to have plenty of options up front. -The running back room is looking as strong as ever. Anthony Grant returns to practice, while Gabe Ervin, Rahmir Johnson and Ajay Allen continue to shine! Spring ball is back and it was the first day Matt Rhule got to bring his players onto the field and see what he actually has for the 2023 season. That makes it a great time for Brian Christopherson and Mike Schaefer to bust out the microphones and chat about the start of the spring season, how Rhule handled the offseason and the media and much, much more. Discussion starts with Rhule's transparency of changes within the program. The two debate what that might mean regarding things going forward and touch on some of the players who are suspended, who left the team and who is changing position. One of the most interesting players who could change spots is Heinrich Haarberg, but he's staying at quarterback for now. Schaefer passes along thoughts on Haarberg's media appearance and what it might mean moving forward for the redshirt sophomore. There's also some offensive line talk as the guys try to figure out who's where in the never-ending game of musical chairs up front. Tuesday's contestant is Ethan Piper, an interior lineman looking for a home, that might change the complexion of the line. From there the two get into a conversation about Gabe Ervin, spring hype and fall production, as the running back room does not have a shortage of interesting players, who all bring something a little different to the table at the spot.
