Corn Nation: for Nebraska Cornhuskers fans

I know what you're thinking. How do you win in all phases of the game when the offense commits five turnovers? A fifteen-play drive that lasted almost nine minutes and ended with points. Then just moments later, after a Tommi Hill interception, the quick attack from Haarberg to Lloyd to extend Nebraska's lead to 14-0. Meanwhile, the Huskers rushed for 155 yards and a late Emmett Johnson touchdown to put the game away. Defensively, what can you say about a unit that continually answers the call? From being put into bad situations early on to two Hill interceptions, a Quentin Newsome fumble recovery, and a blocked punt that led to Newsome's touchdown return. Add another eight tackles for loss and the defense continues to do all it can to keep Nebraska winning. This week on the show (a little later than usual, and we apologize for that), Greg and Hoss enjoy the fact that we're riding a winning streak and one game away from bowl eligibility. Also, Hoss will be in East Lansing this weekend for the game that could get Nebraska bowling, so next week's episode could be quite a celebration, even if it's recorded on Monday night again. Welcome back, football fans! In this Week 8 KickStart episode, we dive into the whirlwind of drama that defined the week. From shocking scandals to nail-biting games, we've got it all covered. First up, the shocking Michigan drama! A cheating scandal rocked the Wolverines, with Conor Stalions suspended without pay. Barstool highlighted the ATS numbers, leaving us questioning the integrity of the game. My take? I'm convinced they did it, but will money talk louder than truth? Only time will tell. In the Iowa vs. Minnesota matchup, a controversial fair catch call echoed worldwide. Was it valid or not? My advice: just score more and leave no room for doubt. The Ohio State vs. Penn State clash was a defensive battle, where Kyle McCord proved his mettle, securing a crucial win for the Buckeyes. Penn State's receivers struggled, setting the stage for a must-win game against Michigan. Rutgers triumphed over Indiana, extending the Hoosiers' string of defeats. Gavin Wimsatt and Monangai showcased their prowess, leaving Indiana in dire straits. Nebraska faced Northwestern, with Haarberg leading the charge. Despite a valiant effort from Sullivan, Nebraska's defense prevailed, setting the tone for their future games. In a rollercoaster matchup, Wisconsin overcame a 14-point deficit against Illinois. The game saw twists and turns, with a last-minute touchdown confusing fans, but Wisconsin emerged victorious. Welcome back, football fans! Time to KICKSTART week 6 in the Big Ten, what's going to happen this weekend? Some lame matchups, some great matchups, we will list them from least to most exciting!  First up, we have Northwestern taking on Howard on Saturday at 3 pm, live on BTN. Northwestern sees this as a crucial opportunity to secure their third win of the season. On the other side, Howard has shown some promise, defeating Morehouse and Robert Morris, but facing challenges against teams like Hampton and Eastern Michigan. Friday night brings us a showdown between Nebraska and Illinois at 8:00 pm on FS1. Both teams have been struggling, and a win here is vital for their morale. Keep an eye on Nebraska's quarterback situation – will Jeff Simms make a comeback, or will Haarberg continue to lead the charge? The battle will be tough, with Illinois boasting the 14th ranked defense and Nebraska striving to improve their offense. Saturday night lights up with Michigan facing off against Minnesota at 7:30 pm on NBC. Michigan has a stellar record against Minnesota, winning 43 out of the last 46 Little Brown Jug matchups. Michigan boasts an impressive lineup, with the best wide receiver, the most efficient passing game, and a strong running back. Their defense tops the conference, making them a formidable force. Purdue takes on Iowa at 3:30 pm on Peacock. Purdue, recovering from a tough loss against Illinois, heads to Kinnick Stadium. Iowa, while victorious, has shown vulnerability. The Purdue offense, led by Card and Deacon Hill, could capitalize on Iowa's missing players. This game promises intensity, as Purdue aims to exploit any cracks in Iowa's defense. Rutgers faces Wisconsin at 11 am on Peacock. Rutgers is just two wins away from becoming bowl eligible, but the Badgers, favorites in the West, stand in their way. Wisconsin's bye week might have given them an edge, but Rutgers, with their solid defense, could present a challenge. Despite being the underdogs, Rutgers will push hard to make their mark on the road. Lastly, our game of the week features Maryland against Ohio State at 11 am on FOX. The Huskers get their first win of the season. Great news for Matt Rhule and the team that could have beaten Minnesota and, because of turnovers, let Colorado run them out of Folsom Field. But there was a development after the win. Nebraska did it with a new quarterback. Because of a Jeff Sims injury, Kearney native Heinrich Haarberg started under center. Haarberg led the team in rushing with 98 yards on 21 carries. His passing numbers are also not bad, 14-24 for 158 yards and two touchdowns. So, does this mean the Huskers have a quarterback controversy three games into the season?  On this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast, presented by BetFred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss the performance of Haarberg and the pros and cons of going back both quarterbacks as the Huskers get ready to take on Louisiana Tech.  Head Coach Matt Rhule has a lot to consider heading into the season's fourth game. The athleticism of Sims or the face the Huskers only turned the ball over once with Haarberg as the starter.  Fred is your guy when you want to bet. More Bonuses. More Bets. On this episode of Generation Red: A Husker Podcast, Scott and I open the show with a TEASER regarding the HUGE announcement coming at the end of the show, that shares some killer news about the future of our podcast. We also announce the three awards our show has been nominated for in the upcoming Nebraska Podcast Awards this August. Then we get down to the most pressing business at hand: the departures of Casey Thompson, Logan Smothers and Richard Torres into the Transfer Portal. Will there be issues with depth at the quarterback position this season? We know Rhule and Company will run the QB a bit more than we saw from a Whipple-coordinated attack, so will 3 scholarship QB's be enough to outlast a rough and tumble Big 10, and lead Nebraska to that elusive bowl game? We also answer a few other questions:1) Does this mean Jeff Sims is locked in as the starter?2) Will Purdy push him in Fall Camp?3) If Sims isn't challenged by Purdy, can Haarberg challenge for the backup spot? We saw what he can do with the read option in the Spring Game.4) Was this Rhule's way of telling D-Coordinators that this kind of QB run game is coming, but without showing how well the Top 2 QB's can run it?We also touch briefly on the other players who are in the portal before calling it a night with a GLORIOUSLY GINORMOUS ANNOUNCEMENT! If you're reading these notes to find out ahead of time what it is, too bad. You'll have to watch the show, or listen to the podcast on Monday. Purdy has played in big games before, so it's important not to forget that! -A quarterback that can run it and decently throw the ball will have the best shot to be the starter. Spring ball is back and it was the first day Matt Rhule got to bring his players onto the field and see what he actually has for the 2023 season.  That makes it a great time for Brian Christopherson and Mike Schaefer to bust out the microphones and chat about the start of the spring season, how Rhule handled the offseason and the media and much, much more.  Discussion starts with Rhule's transparency of changes within the program. The two debate what that might mean regarding things going forward and touch on some of the players who are suspended, who left the team and who is changing position.  One of the most interesting players who could change spots is Heinrich Haarberg, but he's staying at quarterback for now. Schaefer passes along thoughts on Haarberg's media appearance and what it might mean moving forward for the redshirt sophomore.  There's also some offensive line talk as the guys try to figure out who's where in the never-ending game of musical chairs up front. Tuesday's contestant is Ethan Piper, an interior lineman looking for a home, that might change the complexion of the line. From there the two get into a conversation about Gabe Ervin, spring hype and fall production, as the running back room does not have a shortage of interesting players, who all bring something a little different to the table at the spot. After a quick time out Christopherson runs through the latest in Nebraska recruiting with several visitors on campus including Willis McGahee IV and Kaelin Massey,  Then the two highlight the big recruiting weekend and some of the names both are looking forward to hearing more about following their first trips to Lincoln.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices.
