Send us a textEnglish Description (German below)Guest: Willi GoetschelOne of the key figures of the Enlightenment was Königsberg-born philosopher Immanuel Kant. The influential thinker once spoke of his age as the true “age of criticism, to which everything must submit.” His critiques are examinations of both the possibilities and limits of human thought. He argued that reason must critically examine not only religion, legislation, ethics, and the like, but also itself. His aim was to expose unfounded dogmas and free people from their self-imposed immaturity. Kantian criticism was a driving force behind enlightened thinking that was meant to improve society. But is all criticism necessarily wise? Is it, for example, possible or helpful to criticize radical or extreme political movements in a meaningful way or might it be more appropriate to remain silent in certain situations?Willi Goethschel and Michael Hampe have come together once again to discuss these questions and the connections between enlightenment, criticism, and politics. You can find the German and the English transcript on our homepage: www.metis.ethz.ch. There we also provide further material on the topic. It's a wild ride in the United States with cancellations, firings and censorship becoming hallmarks of the Trump administration. On the heels of holding FCC approval hostage unless late night host Jimmy Kimmel was silenced, Trump is threatening to pull licenses for any network that gives him bad publicity. Will major news agencies be able to function without the ability to tell the truth, whether it makes the president look good or bad? We will talk about it with journalists Michael sure and Jim Avila as we look at “This Week in Politics.” A CDC advisory panel is recommending restricting access to the MMRV vaccine. We'll talk about it with Dr. Rob Davidson. He is an emergency physician and Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Healthcare. You can also find him hosting the Paging America podcast. Everyone in the camper, we're headed to Florida for some much-needed levity. For a fabulous Florida never disappoints. Then it's off to the movies with The Culture Blaster, Michael Snyder.
Jimmy Kimmel's show has been canceled, the latest casualty in the Trump administration's brazen attack on freedom of speech. Trump himself is now saying the media isn't allowed to criticize him the way they do… excuse us, has he not heard of the First Amendment? And it doesn't stop there. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr is signaling that they may go even further. What comes next in this dangerous crusade against the free press? What does it mean for the future of democracy? Then miracles will happen. Why? If we know, what we are making wrong, only then we can change. This makes sense,… Mostly of all people think that they know themselves. Oscar Wild said I am by myself the greatest mystery… Actually, we don't even know our self… And if we make mistakes then we blemish the other people…. In relationships, other people see us much better, than we see ourselves… Because we are blind by our mistakes, short longings, bad habits and …I had a girlfriend in Munich and I was living in Bremen (800km distance). On a beautiful day in Munich, I visited her. Before that, I recognize that mainly all Munich citizens had been in a bad mood, because of the Foehn wind (the Foehn is changing the people's moods when they live in such area). I arrived and she was nagging on me like crazy, I could not bear that and escaped to the English Garden… After some time I realized, she was the embodiment of my inner child, that was nagging like her… I came back to her, and without saying anything; she said, that she had been stroked from a cognition, that she was treating me badly because of her bad mood… The Sufis are saying, that the spouse is a reflection of ourselves; so all that we see on bad habits, mistakes that we have also somehow inside of us…. The Saint Krishnamurty said, you are the world, what you see that you are. or Goethe said, your own sins you find first on other… And it is really magic, if we recognize in the right moment our mistake then the outcome will change…. In this powerful and timely episode, we explore how feedback—especially public feedback—can have vastly different impacts depending on gender, and why the principle “praise publicly, criticize privately” is more than just good advice—it's a vital strategy for allyship, equity, and leadership development. Dr. Kimberly DeSimone shares personal insights from years of academic leadership, backed by compelling research on gender bias in student evaluations, performance reviews, and workplace feedback. This episode uncovers how even well-intentioned critiques can reinforce long-standing stereotypes and disproportionately affect women, particularly those in authority or leadership roles. From teaching evaluations to performance appraisals, listeners are challenged to think critically about how, where, and why they deliver feedback—and how they can shift their language and delivery to foster fairness, growth, and inclusion for everyone. In This Episode, You'll Learn: Why feedback given to women is often shaped by unconscious gender norms. How student evaluations and performance reviews can reflect systemic bias—even unintentionally. The power of public praise to combat stereotypes and normalize women's success. How private critique, delivered thoughtfully, fosters psychological safety and growth without reinforcing harmful narratives. The importance of avoiding gendered labels like “bossy,” “catty,” or “cold,” and replacing them with specific, behavior-based feedback. Why women are judged on proof while men are judged on potential—and how to interrupt that dynamic. Key Takeaways: Bias in feedback is real, often unconscious, and has lasting consequences. Words matter. The language we use to describe women influences how they are perceived and treated. Allyship means being intentional. Supporting women means rethinking when, where, and how we give feedback. Public criticism can reinforce negative stereotypes, while public praise can disrupt them. Everyone carries unconscious bias. But with awareness, we can shift the culture—one conversation, one evaluation, and one word choice at a time. Resources Mentioned: Clare Boothe Luce's quote on the burden of representation for women. Research by Joan Williams and the Center for WorkLife Law on gender bias. MacNell, Driscoll, and Hunt (2015) study on gender in teaching evaluations. Call to Action: Think about the last time you gave feedback—what words did you use? Was it public or private? This week, try praising a woman's work formally and publicly, and if needed, deliver critique privately and constructively. It's a small change with the potential for big impact. SEASON 3 EPISODE 106: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Hidden behind Trump’s complex multi-layered endless hallucination that his address to Congress shows he is beloved and the stock market isn’t crashing and Speaker Johnson’s Chief of Staff WASN’T arrested on a DUI right after the speech and the MAGGOTS aren’t furious at him and the newest polling doesn’t suggest he’s already lost nearly a fifth of the Trump Bros under 30… there is a much more real and much starker truth: he has already moving to make NOT LOVING HIM… illegal. The attempt is underway to make PROTESTING THE TRUMP DICTATORSHIP against the law. Early Tuesday, Trump posted what seemed like a warning against pro-Palestinian protests on American campuses. In fact it says nothing about what kind of protests he'd make illegal, so let me tell you what he really meant: Let me re-write this to reflect reality – the reality inside Trump’s plans to imprison you. 'All Federal Funding will STOP for any College, School, or University that allows illegal protests. Protests like ‘Black Lives Matter’ are now illegal. Protests to save Medicare are now illegal. Protests against your favorite president (me) are now illegal. Agitators will be imprisoned… American students will be permanently expelled or depending on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS! NO DEMOCRATS! Thank you for your attention to this matter.' He also dropped a second hint inside that test of human endurance in front of the House and Senate of how he will use the new anti-Deepfake law to prosecute you for sharing videos of him, whether they're real or they're not. Because therein lies the true danger of a deepfake law: claiming a REAL video is just a fake. And of course don't miss out on the attempt to censure Rep. Al Green, the true hero of Tuesday night. They will vote today on punishing him for doing nothing compared to the previous Karen-ing by Boebert and Greene, or the infamous Joe "You Lie" Wilson. WE should be voting on whether we want Al to be the Democratic nominee in '28. Or the head of the entire party. Or the mandatory role model behind whom all the Democrats should've walked out in solidarity. B-Block (31:00) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Those Trump Bros? The under 30s who pushed Trump over the finish line? They have abandoned him. Poll numbers among them down 15-30% in the first MONTH. Ukraine and the peacekeepers explained. Which Trumper would you take first in the Moron Draft, JD Vance, Karoline Leavitt, or Alina Habba? And when Joni Ernst campaigned on going to Washington to get hog and make 'em squeal, little did we know! C-Block (44:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jeff Shell, reportedly running CBS before he's legally allowed to? Well 15 years ago he tried to run NBC before he was legally allowed to, and I have the receipts. Appeaser Governor Polis of Colorado learns what you get for helping Trump: Trump wants to cut off funds to Colorado.
