In this episode we welcome the great soul scribe Tony Cummings to Hammersmith to discuss the subject of his classic 1975 book The Sound of Philadelphia. Tony travelled all the way down from his adopted Stoke-on-Trent to answer our questions about his earliest musical passions in his native Plymouth and the launch of his pioneering '60s fanzines Soul, Soul Music and Shout. He goes on to talk about his contributions to (and editorship of) Black Music magazine – and his deep immersion in the "Philly Soul" sound patented by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell. We hear about the extraordinary stable of musicians who performed on timeless hits by acts such as the O'Jays, the Three Degrees and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Clips from audio interviews with Kenny Gamble and – from 1976 – the Stylistics' Herb Murrell prompt reflections on the lavish sound and sophistication of R&B classics by everyone from the Delfonics and Jerry Butler to Teddy Pendergrass and McFadden & Whitehead. Many thanks to special guest Tony Cummings. Pieces discussed: Inside the Philly Sound, MFSB, TCB, The Stylistics, Gamble-Huff, Thom Bell and the Philly Groove, Hit Producer Thom Bell: Philly Soul & the R&B Flugelhorn, "Philadelphia was the party with a tormented soul", Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff audio, The Stylistics' Herb Murrell audio, Why are we so hard on our music press? and Linkin Park.

Hello everyone, Billy Amendola here on Drum Channel with my long-time friend and R&B/Soul legend Earl Young. Earl, known as the founder and singer of the group The Trammps, (and recording drummer) took the disco world to the mainstream pop charts with their smash hit “Disco Inferno” among others. Always having success as both a vocalist as well as a drummer, many didn't realize that Earl, along with the rhythm section, of the late, Ronnie Baker and Norman Harris, created what's known as TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) Along with producers/songwriters Gamble & Huff, the trio went on to record classic R&B/Soul hits throughout the 70s. Creating a sound all their own. When the Baker, Harris, and Young hit-making machine stretched out to form MFSB and Salsoul Orchestra, the trio took their trademark sound with them. Let's listen in on how Earl's career started from his early childhood to his teens, to an adult, to a now young 84-year-old, who's still out playing and touring with his version of Earl Young and The Trammps. This show is a history lesson for sure. Enjoy!

PIR (Philadelphia International Records) took over from Motown as the preeminent black music label of the Seventies. I interviewed producer, songwriter, guitarist, and arranger BOBBY ELI for the BBC and for my book, “The Invisible Artist” in 2008. Bobby was a member of Mother Father Sister Brother playing guitar on many of the most successful PIR hits of the 1970s, working with their biggest artists and most significant arrangers. As a founder member of the PIR team, Bobby was able to give us an articulate and detailed understanding of the genesis and history of the Philadelphia Sound - Producers and Arrangers THOM BELL, GAMBLE & HUFF, BOBBY MARTIN, MFSB, TSOP, The O'JAYS, The DELPHONICS, LTD, and more! Here, for the first time, is our complete interview. #bobbyeli #richardniles #radiorichard #pir #philadelphiainternationalrecords #motown #theinvisibleartist #motherfathersister #philadelphiasound #thombell #gamble&huff #bobbymartin #mfsb BOBBY ELI – THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (International!) Shirley Jones talks Gamble & Huff, Diana Ross, leaving the business, death of sisters & more
Segunda y última sesión dedicada a la factoría Gamble-Huff.
I am honored to include this episode of the Incredibly talented Shirley Jones Of The Jones Girls. Shirley shares her journey that was shared by her equally talented sisters, collectively known as The Jones Girls. For during a half decade between 1979 and 1984, Shirley, Valorie and Brenda Jones created some of the most glorious Soul music around. Born and raised in Detroit in a gospel singing family, the Jones Girls spent the better part of the 60s and 70s as sought-after backing vocalists, first regionally and then on a national basis. Their attempts to break through as a singing group on a number of smaller labels (including a brief stint at Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label) failed, and they seemed destined to spend their careers harmonizing behind bigger artists. However, while serving as Diana Ross's backing group during a mid-70s tour, the girls were "discovered" by Kenny Gamble and were signed to Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Records. They came out smoking on PIR with their eponymous debut album and the infectious dance single "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else," which stormed the pop, soul and dance charts. They followed with the beautiful ballad, "We're A Melody," a prototypical Philly song with sophisticated arrangements wrapped around their wonderful harmonies. Both drop dead gorgeous and talented, the Jones Girls were individually accomplished singers; but together, their voices were absolutely heavenly. And at PIR they found the perfect match in the melodic writing and lush production that Gamble & Huff and Dexter Wansel/Cynthia Biggs provided them. Their second and third PIR albums were gems. At Peace With Woman and Get As Much Love As You Can featured a number of now classic cuts, including the club favorite "Nights Over Egypt," the sassy "I Just Love the Man" and a timeless cover of the Stylistics' "Children of the Night." In what would prove a career mistake, the Jones Girls left Philadelphia International for RCA Records in 1984, and couldn't recapture the magic. They retired the group in 1985 and lead singer Shirley Jones went solo, returning to PIR in 1986 for Always In The Mood and its #1 hit, "Do You Get Enough Love." She continued to record sporadically over the next decade, and the group reunited from time to time for special concerts and issued a 1992 reunion album, Coming Back, in Europe. The sisters spent much of the next decade raising their children, occasionally reuniting for shows (particularly in Europe) and providing guest vocal help to other artists. They released Best of the Jones Girls in 2000, a great sampler of their work on PIR and an essential purchase for lovers of sophisticated, well orchestrated soul music. Sadly, sister Valorie died the next year. Currently, Brenda Jones lives in Atlanta and sings frequently with her four-piece band, performing both Jazz and R&B numbers, including several Jones Girls tunes.
So this weeks journey into Paradise was inspired by the massive influence of Gamble & Huff , in a real Philly feel show with a Paradise twist. I'll be playing some of the Big Philadelphia tunes that will sound familiar and maybe not so. It's where Motown met the awesome Philly sound that influenced a lot of today's current music. Then in true Paradise Garage fashion I'll be visiting some of those not so regularly played Paradise Garage / Studio 54 stompers that have helped shape modern dance music. Like this weeks show each and every week. I have researched and hand picked some of those gems that make you move to the groove or sit there in musical bliss. Catch last weeks show here whilst it's still hot. The Journey Continues.
NIKIA Performers come and go, but singers, it can be argued, are forever. The power of Song is not easily forgotten—Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle, and Denise Williams are voices that linger in the memory. That kind of heartfelt singing is what Nikia aspires to. “These two [Whitney and Patti] inspired me the most you know they were real vocalists. My uncle, Charlie Wilson, pushed me to practice and become a great vocalist. You know, practice, practice, practice! He is a singer he was the lead singer of The Gap Band.” The 2nd Single “The Drug Song” is but an appetizer for the feast to come, the release of her album She is Me. Love is the drug and Nikia scores with a confidently, sweetly seductively I-need-you vocal and an undulating, slightly techno-tinged electronic cradle of rhythm. Nikia's singing has two distinctive tones herein: The coolly passionate in the body of the song and the crisp, commanding refrain/hook “Just awesome”—both distinctive, both Nikia. The forthcoming album (in early 2016) will feature material penned by her, including “Missing You,” a slightly different side of Nikia. With a sparkling, funk-flavored guitar intro, “Missing You” has a lilt that slightly suggests reggae rhythms. Nikia’s voice is romantic longing personified, her clear, honey-toned voice (evoking the classy old-school soul of Denise Williams and the Philly soul of Gamble & Huff) riding the melody with easy, bittersweet poise. The production of Shawn Keys of Shawn Keys Ink is sparse, putting the spotlight on the song and the singer (instead of drawing attention to the production itself). “Missing You” has a bittersweet pull to it that’s hard to resist, sweet as a brand-new romance, and slightly stinging like a heartache that’s beginning to heal.
