The day has finally come: after 79 episodes of Love is the Message, it's time to talk Travolta. Saturday Night Fever was always coming down the pipe for us, and now we're giving it the LITM treatment. In this episode, Tim and Jeremy establish some of the pre-history to the seminal 1977 film. With musical examples drawn from Vince Aletti's Disco Files playlists, we hear about the rise of the suburbs in the USA, the dynamics between the different boroughs of mid-70s NYC, and consider the suburban disco scene. We ask again what makes disco disco, revisit the Hustle, tune up the Salsoul Orchestra and take a trip to a disco conference.Of course, it wouldn't be Saturday Night Fever without the Bee Gees: often-derided and much-mocked but one of the highest selling bands of all time, it was their music which provided the soundtrack to the film. Are they a guilty pleasure? Listen along to find out.Produced by Matt Huxley. We are now on Youtube! GRAMMY® Award Winning Multi-Instrumentalist, Producer, Songwriter and Arranger ~Philly Int'l, MFSB, Gamble & Huff Tribute to the Songwriter, Musician, Bobby Eli (1946-2023)Intro Music ~ TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) '73. Composed by Kenneth Gamble and Leon HuffMusic by MFSB , Vocals by The Three Degrees(C) 1973 TSOP/Philadelphia International Records, Inc.My Music Flashback Series continues this week featuring the genre of R& B. Soul & Funk.It can be a great tribute to a music artist when their style can influence current pop culture for century's & decades. The genre of Soul, R & B & Funk is taken for granted today & the influence is heard & seen in grooves, style & fashions most of todays' pop artists. However, the original recording artists truly paid dues to get in the position to not only become recording artists, but to write & produce their work. At that time, some of the artists who created a new innovative style had the challenge of the music executives not understanding the genre, and some even refusing to promote the compositions. Today we call this music - classics & the artists trailblazers. My guest this week in one of them. Bobby Eli is a Grammy Award Winning, internationally acclaimed Grammy Winning Record Producer, Engineer, Songwriter, Arranger and Multi-Instrumentalist. Bobby was a founding member of the famed Philadelphia studio group, MFSB. If the music is Philadelphia International, Gamble & Huff / TSOP. Bobby's music is more than likely on it. His signature guitar licks can be heard on countless gold and platinum hit recordings by artists such as: Chris Brown, Jay Z, George Clinton, Elton John, David Bowie, Hall and Oats, The Jacksons, MFSB, The Ojay's, Teddy Pendergrass, The Stylistics, Lou Rawls,Salsoul Orchestra, Patti Labelle, Phyllis Hyman, B.B. King, Dixie Hummingbirds, Billy Paul, The Spinners, Johnny Mathis, Deniece Williams, Wilson Pickett, Dusty Springfield, Nancy Wilson, and many other wonderful artists too numerous to mention. As a songwriter and producer Eli was responsible for such monster hits as the Grammy winning number one song, “Love Won't Let Me Wait”, as recorded by Luther Vandross, “Sideshow” and “Three Ring Circus” by Blue Magic, “Just Don't Want To Be Lonely” by the Main Ingredient, the first two albums by: “Atlantic Starr”, self titled and “Straight to the Point”, the Grammy nominated album: “Love Niecy Style” by Deniece Williams, Rose Royce's number one U.K. hit single “Magic Touch” and their album” Music Magic”. Bobby was responsible for the Jackie Moore number one dance classic,” This Time Baby”, the number one international hit singles “Zoom” by Fat Larry's Band and “Love Town” by Booker Newberry III.Artists as diverse as Luther Vandross, BeBe & CeCe Winans, Shaggy, Regina Belle, The Whispers, Isaac Hayes, The Dells, Sister Sledge, Englebert Humperdink, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and an array ofothers have recorded Bobby's songs.Bobby now owns and operates The Grooveyard @ Studio E, a recording facility in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. His intimate studio is only minutes from his hometown, The City Of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. Here Eli is keeping real music alive and continues to be guiding light and inspiration to musicians and artists everywhere© 2024 Building Abundant Success!!2024 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Back in the 70s there may have been a little too many visits to the cookie jar. When you chose to dance a little bit closer; you hoped your partner liked a little bit more of you. Alas it is only you who could decide when you're just the right size. This week, let's spend the night together and have a listen to Charo and the Salsoul Orchestra Cuchi Cuchi. There is no need to beat the clock, so we're not going to go through it like Speedy Gonzalez, but instead take it like a slow ride on a borriquito. Hello everyone, Billy Amendola here on Drum Channel with my long-time friend and R&B/Soul legend Earl Young. Earl, known as the founder and singer of the group The Trammps, (and recording drummer) took the disco world to the mainstream pop charts with their smash hit “Disco Inferno” among others. Always having success as both a vocalist as well as a drummer, many didn't realize that Earl, along with the rhythm section, of the late, Ronnie Baker and Norman Harris, created what's known as TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) Along with producers/songwriters Gamble & Huff, the trio went on to record classic R&B/Soul hits throughout the 70s. Creating a sound all their own. When the Baker, Harris, and Young hit-making machine stretched out to form MFSB and Salsoul Orchestra, the trio took their trademark sound with them. Let's listen in on how Earl's career started from his early childhood to his teens, to an adult, to a now young 84-year-old, who's still out playing and touring with his version of Earl Young and The Trammps. This show is a history lesson for sure. Enjoy!

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of Salsoul Records, perhaps the most recogniseably sampled catalogue in the history of disco. The label name came from the US urban latino community who were listening to a mash-up of salsa and soul, and it was established by brothers Joseph, Kenneth and Stan Cayre. They created a disco genre which was influenced by Philadelphia International, in fact they hired some of Philadelphia's musicians to help develop their own signature uplifting orchestral strings and brass sound. That sound is perhaps best exemplified by the many tracks recorded by The Salsoul Orchestra, who also backed many of their other artists. And in this special mix you'll hear many of the Salsoul Orchestra's best performances. Enjoy over an hour of my Salsoul favourites, given nu disco makeovers by some great DJs and producers including Dr Packer, Dmitri from Paris, The Reflex, Dave Lee, and Loshmi. ENJOY. DISFRUTAR.Here's the full tracklist/aquí está la lista completa de canciones: Everyman (Joey Negro's Salsoul Strut) DOUBLE EXPOSURE; Ten percent (The Reflex Revision) DOUBLE EXPOSURE; Nice n' nasty (Loshmi Edit) THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA; Ooh I love it (Love Break) (Dmitri from Paris DJ friendly classic re-edit) THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA; You're just the right size (Loshmi Edit) THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA; Chicago Bus Stop (A Jam Master Mix) THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA; Salsoul Rainbow (Dmitri from Paris DJ friendly classic re-edit) THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA; Dance a little bit closer (Dario Caminta Revibe) CHARO & THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA; The beat goes on and on (Dr Packer Rework) RIPPLE; Spring rain (Vaudafunk Rework) SILVETTI; Runaway (Dr Packer Rework) LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY.
What's good, family? We see you standing tall. We had some rain in our neck of the woods the last few days, yet that didn't stop the sun from shining from within. Spread that joy, and watch it work. With that said, onward with the show. It was 1976, and Disco was hot. While Donna Summer, Barry White, Gloria Gaynor, and the Salsoul Orchestra churned out the genre's early standards, there were also your usual oddities in the shelves, from the overtly sexy to the downright novelty. Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band was neither, and in fact, they weren't even Disco. However, their carefree lyrics and tight danceable musicianship fit beautifully with the times.Co-founded by brothers August Darnell (aka Kid Creole) and Stony Browder Jr., Dr. Buzzard's drew influences from the big-band and swing eras, as well as Soul, Latin, Jazz, and African sounds, and came up with a fresh and lush fusion that was ready for the funky feet.At its very core was the sensual, silky and exuberant voice of Cory Daye, who was more than happy to stay in the background and let the men call the shots. That was, of course, until they buckled under pressure and Cory had no choice but to step out front, give life to August's lyrics of the “tragic mulatto” and Stony's dazzling arrangements, and in the process, create one of the most enchanting postcards of the early Disco years.Note: In the episode we mention that Stony Browder Jr. passed on in 1991. He actually passed on in 2001.
