Raised in Atlanta, her parents recognized her talent early, encouraging her to sing in the church choir at just four years old.  But Jean's musical prowess didn't stop at vocals; she also mastered piano, clarinet, and bassoon. Her academic journey was as impressive as her musical one. At Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, Jean not only honed her musical skills but also became fluent in Russian.  Her dedication to music earned her a scholarship to Morris Brown College in 1965, where she expanded her repertoire to include various orchestral instruments. Jean's recording career blossomed in 1969 alongside her husband, Doug Carn. Their musical collaboration bore fruit in the form of three albums for Ovation Records.  Jean's unique voice, first heard on the radio show 'Today In Georgia', captivated listeners, and her rendition of 'Misty' left an indelible mark. A trailblazer in her own right, Jean Carne was praised for being one of the first Afro-American women to take charge of her musical direction, resisting industry pressures.  Her collaborations with legends like Duke Ellington, Norman Connors, George Duke, and Earth, Wind And Fire further solidified her status in the music world. As a 12-year-old gofer, he rubbed shoulders with legends like Stevie Wonder and Patti Labelle, sparking his passion for music. Dexter's life took a dramatic turn when he served in the Vietnam War, a harrowing experience that left a profound impact on him.  Despite this, Dexter returned with a renewed vigor for music, channeling his experiences into his art. In 1975, Dexter's path crossed with Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the masterminds behind Philadelphia International Records. As a member of Yellow Sunshine, alongside guitarist Roland Chambers, Dexter's talent shone brightly, leading to session work with The Ebony's and eventually becoming a part of the staff creative collective at Philadelphia International Records.  Dexter's genius blossomed at PIR, where he arranged, played keyboards, and wrote songs for acts like The O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, and The Intruders. His work with Patti Labelle, especially the song 'Shoot Him on Sight', showcased his ability to craft songs across genres.  Dexter Wansel's compositions are a testament to his versatility and profound musicality. He wrote for Jean Carn, Shirley Jones, The Jacksons, The Stylistics, and many more, crafting songs that are revered in R and B history.  His work with artists like Amy Keys, The O'Jays, Miles Jaye, and Marilyn Scott further diversified his portfolio. In addition to his prolific work as a songwriter and arranger, Dexter released several influential solo albums, including 'Life on Mars' (1976), 'Voyager' (1978), and 'Time Is Slipping Away' (1979). If you're a fan of Philadelphia soul, you've enjoyed the work of Dexter Wansel. He wrote for and produced such Philadelphia International artists as Lou Rawls, Billy Paul, Patti LaBelle, Teddy Pendergrass and the Jacksons, and he conducted and played with MFSB, whose “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” was the “Soul Train” theme but wasn't called that for a reason he explains. As a kid working at Philadelphia's Uptown Theater, Wansel assisted Stevie Wonder, James Brown and other acts. Later he got studio gigs as an early adopter of synthesizers, and his debut album, the much-sampled Life on Mars, showcases his jazz-funk chops and a lifelong passion for space. His stories and memories are a blast.

Next up, our journey through Philadelphia International Records finds us right at the label's height of ubiquity during the mid-1970s. This episode will cover the story of Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes' 1975 record, Wake Up Everybody, and Dexter Wansel's widely sampled 1976 record, Life on Mars, featuring interviews from Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, PIR vocal trio The Jones Girls member, Shirley Jones, and Mark Anthony Neal, the James B. Duke professor of African American Studies at Duke University.  This season of the VMP Anthology Podcast is hosted by John Morrison. Laura Jane hails from Michigan. She is from a multi-cultural family. She started singing at three and her first professional performance was in the children's chorus of the Opera Grand Rapids, where she performed in the operas, Carmen and Tosca. She performed in theater and musical productions and recorded radio commercials for Honda. She starred in television commercials for Meijer's Grocery Stores. Laura Jane attended the Boston Conservatory of Music for two years and finished her education at the University of The Arts in Philadelphia, with a degree in Music and Theatre. In Philadelphia, Laura Jane stumbled across superstar songwriting and producing team Gamble and Huff, who owned the building that housed her school. It was the home of the Sound Of Philadelphia. She found herself in the studio, singing with Billy Paul and producer Dexter Wansel. Laura Jane is a singer-songwriter and vocalist to the superstars. Laura Jane was in a girl group with a development deal with the label. Her studio experience began there. Her first independent project was To My Planet Boo, produced by three-time Grammy-winner Xavier Dphrepaulezz aka Fantastic Negrito. Two singles Summertime in the City and The Journey gained critical acclaim. Her second album Everything Changes was produced by Jameson Trotter. Her catchy singles include Lift Me Up with Chad Wright, Noriko Olling, and Julian Miranda, and Dear Rita, an ode to her mother. Love is the Answer is vocals and percussion by Gilmar Gomes from Brazil.
