November 15, 1971. Galveston, Texas. 15-year old Debbie Ackerman and 15-year old Maria Johnson are seen climbing into a white van outside an ice cream shop, but they never return home. Days later, the girls' bodies are found in a bayou and they are bound, nude from the waist down and have been shot to death. After several decades, a convicted murderer named Edward Harold Bell sends out letters in which he confesses to having killed Debbie and Maria. This week, “The Trail Went Cold” releases the conclusion of our extensive two-part anniversary episode on the murders of eleven female victims known as “The Eleven Who Went to Heaven”: 15-year old Debbie Ackerman, 15-year old Maria Johnson, 14-year old Rhonda Renee Johnson, 13-year old Sharon Shaw, 13-year old Colette Wilson, 19-year old Gloria Gonzales, 12-year old Brooks Bracewell, 14-year old Georgia Geer, 14-year old Brenda Jones, 16-year old Kimberley Pitchford and 12-year old Suzanne Bowers. Cops are asking for the public's help in finding two missing teens. Kaylee Jones has been missing from her Georgia home for more than two months. Daniel and Brenda Jones fear their daughter has been sex trafficked. The 16-year-old, who is autistic, disappeared after the parents took away her phone. It had been discovered the girl has been chatting with several men online. In a separate case out of Alabama, 17-year-old Tarasha Benjamin disappeared after going to a flea market. Benjamin left that Saturday morning with a friend. Then Benjamin borrowed the friend's car. It was found a mile from the flea market with the driver's side windows smashed. Benjamin has been missing since 2010. Kaylee Jones, 16, has been missing from her Georgia home for over two weeks. On the night of June 14th, Daniel and Brenda Jones told their daughter good night, but in the morning she was gone. Detectives believe Jones may have met up with someone she has spoken to online. Jones' mother says the parents had taken the girl's phone, but she still had access to a laptop and in looking at her online activity they found Kaylee Jones had been using an app to talk to at least four men online. Police say Jones does not currently have a cell phone or any other electronic device on her. The missing teen is described as being 5-feet-8-inches tall, weighing about 135 pounds. It was time for a catch up with Brenda. Brenda is one of those people I met because and through the podcast outreach and we have become very fast friends. We vibe on the same level, and we share a lot of the same ideas, ideals and even experiences. We opened up and had no pre-planned topic or agenda for this podcast... but I knew with the arrival of my baby coming quickly I needed to be speaking with my tribe so their vibe would support the big womb/change energy I'm feeling right now. This year, I started my podcast and welcomed my second baby earthside." Candice is a self proclaimed master manifestor and personal development junkie who loves to engage in interesting conversations with other influencers and entrepreneurs. Her favourite conversations are the ones that take courage to engage in. (Check out her podcast, Create the Ripple Podcast wherever you stream your podcasts for more of that!) She spends her time living - in a tiny home (250 sq ft), traveling with her daughter - speaking - on her podcast and on stages, and sharing candidly with other women how to find love after betrayal, to trust themselves, to speak up for themselves and set powerful boundaries. After a narcissistic and abusive romantic partner cheated on her with multiple women and left her (and the country) with significant unexpected bad debt and ruined credit, Candice was forced to rebuild her life, her credit and her trust in herself. Over the next few years Candice navigated the challenging world of foreclosure court, filing for financial proposals and divorce. During these times she adopted a minimalist lifestyle, leaned on her personal network and practiced radical personal forgiveness, acceptance and responsibility. The journey was not without its impact and Candice shares powerfully about dealing with anxiety, depression, shame and learning to let go. Now debt free, financially stable and in a safe committed relationship, Candice loves her minimalist lifestyle for the beauty and freedom it offers her. She knows the power of a good thrift store shop and loves her wardrobe! She has learned the power of saying no, listening to your own heart and speaks openly about subtle abuse as it occurs in relationships. She's become a voice for listening to your own truth and speaking it powerfully. She knows how to save money, make money online and in creative ways to balance the books as a single mom and yet live your biggest and best life. Candice can never resist the urge to take off her boots to walk barefoot into a clear mountain lake or stream. When she is not connecting or writing, she can be found disappearing into the backcountry trails of Canada with her life-love Mark and losing herself exploring waterfalls and mountain trails. She is a quiet introvert who adores eating clean foods and reading a great book. Could we lower the city of Detroit's property tax rates - they are among the highest in the nation - while not gutting services? This would be a benefit for long-time Detroit residents who face very high property tax burdens and might be a longer term fix than the one-time forgiveness provided through a charitable program from Dan Gilbert's foundation. Also, it could stimulate more individual investment to make the city make more fiscal sense and help attract back the middle class, which Detroit has mostly lost. It's also something that wouldn't go first to billionaire and millionaire developers that live outside the city, but residents who live in their homes. To talk about this idea is Stephen J.K. Walters. He's the author of a piece in City Journal, "Detroit's Black Wealth Tax: To help close the racial wealth gap, slash Detroit’s confiscatory property tax rate." Also, a bit of housekeeping. The Detroit City Council and mayoral races are heating up. A number of incumbents, including Andre Spivey, Raquel Castenda-Lopez, Brenda Jones and Gabe Leland aren't running, setting the table for the most change in city government in years. Today’s episode is all about knowing that you are the designer of your life. You will learn that defining your core values is not only necessary for letting go of mom guilt, but also makes setting appropriate boundaries easy peasy, and helps free up time for the things that matter to you most.We also talk about how we manipulate ourselves into believing we're stuck and what it takes to get unstuck. Season 6, Episode 6 After decades in Montreal, Brenda Jones returned to PEI to retire. She learned how important the landscape of her youth was to her well-being. In "Medicinal Herbs of Eastern Canada: A Pictorial Manual", the award-winning illustrator of children's books turns her attention and artistic skills to wild plants - the nearly-lost knowledge about their healing properties, and the caution that some deserve. She tells Costas Halavrezos about the science and traditional lore surrounding some of our region's most familiar plants.
I am honored to include this episode of the Incredibly talented Shirley Jones Of The Jones Girls. Shirley shares her journey that was shared by her equally talented sisters, collectively known as The Jones Girls. For during a half decade between 1979 and 1984, Shirley, Valorie and Brenda Jones created some of the most glorious Soul music around. Born and raised in Detroit in a gospel singing family, the Jones Girls spent the better part of the 60s and 70s as sought-after backing vocalists, first regionally and then on a national basis. Their attempts to break through as a singing group on a number of smaller labels (including a brief stint at Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label) failed, and they seemed destined to spend their careers harmonizing behind bigger artists. However, while serving as Diana Ross's backing group during a mid-70s tour, the girls were "discovered" by Kenny Gamble and were signed to Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Records. They came out smoking on PIR with their eponymous debut album and the infectious dance single "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else," which stormed the pop, soul and dance charts. They followed with the beautiful ballad, "We're A Melody," a prototypical Philly song with sophisticated arrangements wrapped around their wonderful harmonies. Both drop dead gorgeous and talented, the Jones Girls were individually accomplished singers; but together, their voices were absolutely heavenly. And at PIR they found the perfect match in the melodic writing and lush production that Gamble & Huff and Dexter Wansel/Cynthia Biggs provided them. Their second and third PIR albums were gems. At Peace With Woman and Get As Much Love As You Can featured a number of now classic cuts, including the club favorite "Nights Over Egypt," the sassy "I Just Love the Man" and a timeless cover of the Stylistics' "Children of the Night." In what would prove a career mistake, the Jones Girls left Philadelphia International for RCA Records in 1984, and couldn't recapture the magic. They retired the group in 1985 and lead singer Shirley Jones went solo, returning to PIR in 1986 for Always In The Mood and its #1 hit, "Do You Get Enough Love." She continued to record sporadically over the next decade, and the group reunited from time to time for special concerts and issued a 1992 reunion album, Coming Back, in Europe. The sisters spent much of the next decade raising their children, occasionally reuniting for shows (particularly in Europe) and providing guest vocal help to other artists. They released Best of the Jones Girls in 2000, a great sampler of their work on PIR and an essential purchase for lovers of sophisticated, well orchestrated soul music. Sadly, sister Valorie died the next year. Currently, Brenda Jones lives in Atlanta and sings frequently with her four-piece band, performing both Jazz and R&B numbers, including several Jones Girls tunes.

And concerns are growing over the political turmoil that could come from long delays counting mail-in ballots. Brian and John speak with Daniel Lazare. The Problem with the Arab American Community Award winning journalist and communicator Ray Hanania talks about how the Arab American community can overcome the self-imposed failings to become successful July 21, 2020 Vol 3. Ep. 11 Ray Hanania discusses the challenges that Arab Americans face and their failure to be effective. He reviews the challenges they face in politics, communications ands the news media, and even with government programs like the Census and makes recommendations on how to change. Hanania discusses the failure of Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and why she has not been a good champion of Palestinian rights and has failed as a congress person and will most likely lose the August 4, 2020 Michigan Democratic Primary election to challenger Brenda Jones, and he looks at the election battle between Republican Darrel Issa and Democrat Ammar Campo-Najjar in California and why Campo-Najjar, who has emphasied his Mexican American heritage over his Palestinian heritage, had a strong chance of winning. And Hanania discusses the importance of communications and why so many Arab Americans just don't understand that Truth is not the message that you sell to win over the public. You sell perception first! You identify with the audience you are trying to win over and once you do identify then you introduce your issues and get your needs addressed. Michigan's newest Congresswoman is already facing tough competition from Republicans and even Democrats.
Arab Radio: Ian Conyers discusses the Aug. 4, 2020 13th Congressional election Arab Radio July 17, 2020 Guest Ian Conyers joins host Ray Hanania to discuss the August 4, 2020 Michigan Democratic Primary election and the battle for the congressional seat between controversial incumbent Rashida Tlaib and former Congresswoman and Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones Ian Kyle Conyers the youngest state Senator in Michigan history. represented the Detroit Lincoln Park South Gate and Alen Park in the Michigan Senate for one term. Conyers was among the candidates who ran to succeed Congressman John Congress in the Democratic Primary in 2018. Ian is John Conyer’s nephew … today the 13th district is being fought over by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and former Congresswoman Brenda Jones who is also the Detroit City Council President. Ian Conyers and three other candidates who ran in 2018 have all endorsed Jones … Hanania has repeatedly invited Rashida Tlaib to come on the radio show. "She has declined to allow me to interview her, even though I am Palestinian American, because of her personal dislike of moderate Arab American voices like my own," Hanania said. "Tlaib has also blocked me from her social media … not that I am missing much … and I wants, as Tlaib says herself often, "to speak truth." Conyers accuses Tlaib of focusing on international issues after campaigning in 2018 on a platform that failed to mention any of the international issues that Tlaib has become associated with since her election in November 2018. Conyers also contends that the 2018 battle had been confusing for voters because the Governor of Michigan at the time rescheduled the election to complete the term of retiring Congressman John Conyers and had it scheduled at the same time with the election for the full term in August 2018. Brenda Jones won the election to complete the Conyers term, five weeks, while Tlaib won the full term election in which four African Americans ran and divided the strong African American vote in the district. In the August 4, 2020 election, Tlaib and Jones will face-off head-to-head, one-on-one and many believe that Talib will not be able to hold the seat int he face of a consolidated district vote. The Arab street Radio is broadcast on the 2nd Tuesday of every month on WNZK AM690 radio and hosted by veteran Chicago City Hall and political columnist Ray Hanania. Click here to listen to an interview with former Congresswoman and Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones on July 10, 2020. (Again, Rashida Tlaib was invited to be interviewed but she has repeatedly declined Ray Hanania's requests, blocking him from her social media.) Brenda Jones candidate for Detroit's 13th Congressional District Challenging first term incumbent Rashida Tlaib Its Friday July 10, 2020 … I’m Ray Hanania, special US Correspondent for the Arab News Newspaper … and you’re listening to Radio Baladi … THE ARAB STREET Radio & Podcast broadcast from Detroit, Michigan through 690 AM WNZK Radio … THE ARAB STREET Radio & Podcast is a part of the US Arab Radio Network hosted by Laila Alhusini … in an effort to energize and empower Arab Americans to stand up for their rights … for more information go to my website at www.Hanania.com … and afterwards on podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or by visiting my podcast website www.TheArabStreet.org. The radio show call-in number is 248-557-3300 I am very honored this morning to have as my guest Brenda Jones, the President of the Detroit City Council and candidate for Congress in Michigan’s 13th District challenging first term incumbent Rashida Tlaib. Brenda Jones won a special election to fill the remainder of the term of Congressman John Conyers, who was a good friend of mine for many years. Despite serving only a brief five-week tenure, Congresswoman Jones voted 77 times and sponsored two pieces of legislation while representing Michigan's 13th Congressional District. There were two concurrent elections on August 7, 2018 to succeed Congressman John Conyers who died on Dec. 5, 2017. The first was a special election which was held on Aug 7, 2018 to complete Conyers’ remaining term of office (five weeks). The second election was held to fill Conyer’s vacant seat and represent the 13th district in the new two-year term. Jones defeated Tlaib in the special election by a vote of 32,727 to Tlaib who had 31,084 with only four candidates in the race. But Tlaib defeated Jones in the two-year term election by a vote of 27,841 to Jones who had 26,941 votes with six total candidates including three other African Americans. In this year’s rematch, Jones has been endorsed by all four of the candidates who ran in that 2018 election, Coleman Young, Ian Conyers, Shannelle Jackson and Bill Wild. Jones has been endorsed by many others including by retired Judge Greg Mathis, one of the most popular judges who served on the District Court. And she is running against Rashida Tlaib in a one-on-one race August 4, 2020. Jones was elected to the Detroit City Council in November 2005 and is in her third term. Since 2014 she has serviced as the City Council President working diligently to bring jobs, economic opportunities, neighborhood revitalization, and educational resources to all, positively impacting the quality of life for residents, public safety personnel, senior citizens, small business owners, government employees, veterans, and union members. By the way, I have repeatedly invited Rashida Tlaib to join me on this radio show and to allow me to interview her for newspaper profiles, features and she has refused … her refusal has been very personal and I won’t go into the specifics but she has attacked me repeatedly and block me from her social media because I am an award winning columnist who has been a reporter and columnist for more than 45 years … and I will not be bullied. When a disaster hits, flooding and fires might not discriminate, but the systems and funding intended to rebuild our communities do, and in fact the plans public officials put in place often create worse versions of the policies and practices that happen all the time that put people of color and people with few resources at a disadvantage. Texas Housers researcher Amelia Adams discusses patterns that put renters at a disadvantage in hurricane recovery compared with homeowners. We also talk to Texas RioGrande Legal Aid attorney Rachel Zummo about a lawsuit filed by TRLA on behalf of renters who describe the inequitable system of recovery a fair housing issue. With many of the renters unable to recover being people of color, legal aid and the plaintiffs are calling on the state to directly address this inequality. We also talk to plaintiff Brenda Jones from Aransas Pass about her experience after Hurricane Harvey. Transcript of Episode 19
Detroit City Council demands discipline for deleted emails, the weather for Halloween, Schools are seeing pot-laced treats show up in kids' lunches, the Better business Bureau is hearing complaints from women who received greetings and gift cards from someone named Jenny B, and Detroit Lions pass on making any moves before NFL trade deadline.
Brenda Jones, Co-Founder, Belief Company, www.beliefco.com Brenda mentors entrepreneurs (and moms) to ditch the stuff that holds them back, discover and align with what they really want, and activate their inner superpowers so they can rock it on stage, kill it in business, master the whole “parenting thing”… and finally, create their kickass “vision board life” all while streamlining business and life to overcome the overwhelm of the “work-life balance.” As a mindset coach, life strategist, and board-certified master trainer of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and other subconscious mind techniques, she brings her unique style by incorporating her degrees and experience in psychology, applied behavior analysis, and special education into all she does. She is the co-founder of Belief Co and the creator of The momME Method all while homeschooling her two young daughters and managing their crazy competitive dance schedules. Her biggest dream as a little girl was to “be a mommy.” But when she finally achieved her dream of being a stay-at-home-mom and retired from her career as an autism specialist and program director, she quickly lost herself in being “just a mom.” A tragedy in her little mommy group ignited her journey of self-discovery, but it was when her daughter told her she didn’t want to have kids because she “wanted to have a career” – at the age of 7 – that it really hit home. Now, her dream is to be the role model her kids deserve, creating the time and financial freedom to be there for them AND for herself, and showing them that anything is possible while helping other moms re-discover who they are so that they can do the same.

That’s the question facing Detroit city council president Brenda Jones who has the chance to be a U.S. Congressperson for a couple months. Bus service in Macomb County may not be out of the woods yet. The narrow 23 vote victory - out of more than 150,000 votes cast - for the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation will probably be recounted after it’s certified. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson has sent off a letter that is terse, blunt and not a fan of Detroit’s quote comeback that’s a quote “Righteous Cause”. The letter claims that Detroit CEOs and business leaders are organizing to build up Detroit at the suburbs expense. It’s Thursday, so even though we’ll have a Friday show I wanted to go through our City 5 list of events happening this weekend around the city. This week we actually have a couple bonuses, and if you missed anything the list is up on DailyDetroit.com on our City 5.

Fed up with "drab" hospital gowns while undergoing treatment for breast cancer, Brenda Jones learned how to sew and created her own. Now, her "Hug Wraps" bring joy to patients all over the world. Brenda Jones felt as if her world had ended when she was diagnosed with breast cancer back in October 2008. Being forced to put on a drab, generic, embarrassing traditional hospital gown every time she went in for treatment only made the experience worse. So with a flash of inspiration — and a crash-course in sewing — she decided to do something about it. Much to her surprise, the kimono-style wrap she designed to give herself some dignity in the waiting room started garnering requests from other patients. Today? She's not only recovered, but she can hardly keep up with the demand for her homemade Hug Wraps from cancer patients all over the world. Since that day, Jones had made hundreds of wraps and has even sent them as far as Poland, England and Canada. Although she started making them for free, she admits her resources have become stretched and now she has to ask for a donation. "If people can't afford it, I try to send them one for free but I'm going broke," she says, adding: "I've made over 350 now and a lot of them I have given away for free." To solve the problem, she's in the process of setting up a nonprofit corporation so she can get sponsorship to continue making her much-needed gown-alternatives. "My ultimate goal is to get these to everyone for free -— there's nothing else I would like more." The amazing feedback she gets from her customers, who are either suffering from cancer or have a loved one who is, just inspires her to keep sewing. "Some people don't have the loving family I had when I was diagnosed," she explains. "I think for some people, the wrap is an extension of someone caring and so I put a personal note in with every parcel, saying 'every time you put on this hug wrap I am right there with you.'"
This two-hour NARSOL conference call took place on September 30. We discussed NARSOL's new relationship with Paul Dubbeling, an attorney based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, who is now on retainer with NARSOL. He will be leading our reinvigorated Scarlet Legal Action Project (SLAP). Hour 1: We had an introduction and overview of the Scarlet Legal Action Project and our priorities. Mr. Dubbeling and NARSOL's executive director Brenda Jones discussed the issues and answered questions. Hour 2: Brenda gave an overview of the upcoming NARSOL national conference. Then Mr. Dubbeling, Brenda, and host Larry took questions related to SLAP and other legal issues and cases from the audience. They were joined by attorney Adele Nichols, who was on the call.
