Alan sits down with Broadway producer Brian Anthony Moreland for a candid, high-energy conversation about the realities of commercial theatre. Brian shares the fascinating story of how he caught the theatre bug playing Santa Claus in the third grade , his formative years at a performing arts boarding school , and his early career as a non-union dancer dealing with the exhausting audition grind in New York City. He opens up about the pivotal moment he decided to pivot to producing, starting with a grueling five-and-a-half-year journey to bring Thoughts of a Colored Man to Broadway. Alan and Brian pull back the curtain on the industry's economic pressures, debating Broadway financials, escalating production costs, and what it truly takes to balance commercial viability with meaningful, artistic storytelling. The conversation centers deeply on Brian's extraordinary relationship with the work of August Wilson. He recalls the serendipitous train ride to Pittsburgh that led to him producing the record-breaking revival of The Piano Lesson , and how Denzel Washington personally asked him to lead-produce his next Wilson project. Brian breaks down the profound themes of identity, healing, and family preservation driving his latest production at the Barrymore Theatre, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, sharing delightful insights into working with legendary director Debbie Allen and the joyful, nurturing energy that stars Taraji P. Henson and Cedric the Entertainer bring to the rehearsal room. Finally, Brian takes on the 60-second plot challenge, pitches a classic musical, and reflects on the timeless power of theatre as a space where you can be anything. Brian Anthony Moreland is a transformative Broadway producer dedicated to shaping the contemporary cultural landscape through visionary, inclusive storytelling. Originally from California, he began his career as a performer before transitioning into producing. His impressive Broadway repertoire includes the ground-breaking global hit Othello starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, the record-breaking revival of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson, The Wiz, The Lifespan of a Fact, Sea Wall / A Life, and The Sound Inside. A respected industry leader, Moreland serves on the Board of Governors of The Broadway League, where he co-chairs the Multicultural Task Force. He also holds leadership roles as a Trustee for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a Trustee of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, a Board Director for NYC Tourism and Conventions, and is an active member of the Theatre Development Fund (TDF). Onan overcast April day in the middle of Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay, Paul Lwin looks like he's playing a vintage video game. He huddles over a laptop on the deck of the spartan vessel he's taking out on the water today. Tiny boat icons float across the screen; he draws a box around them, selects a few parameters, and clicks “Start Play.” Seconds later, a set of driverless boats in the bay a mile away begin gliding in parallel with the icons, which leave bright blue tracks on the screen in their wake. Lwin flashes an enormous grin. Each of those autonomous crafts is a “Rampage,” the 14-foot flagship boat of Lwin's Providence-based company, Havoc, which outfits its vessels with technology that theoretically lets a single human control thousands at once. Lwin, 40, and his cofounder Joe Turner, 42, both Navy vets, aim to become the U.S. military's go-to maker of specialized software for not just uncrewed boats, but all domains, after recently acquiring a couple of small aerial and land drone startups as well. “The goal here is to make sure you don't need to know anything about robotics or autonomy,” Lwin explains, showing the steps again on the laptop. “If it's not this simple, it's a science experiment. Operators—especially warfighters who don't have PhDs in robotics, who don't have PhDs in search algorithms—will never use it if it's more difficult than this.” By Monica Hunter-Hart, Reporter Learn more about your ad choices. Michael Patton is passionate about parks and recreation and he feels like the podcast has ignored this aspect of government operations for too long. A few weeks back he messaged me and articulated his case for why parks and recreation departments should be seen more as vital components of local government and not just "nice to haves" or afterthoughts in the eyes of the city manager. And speaking of city management, Michael thinks that parks and recreation directors possess a vast array of skills and experiences that should help them be successful city and county managers. Adelaide Hall (1901 – 1993), entertainer extraordinaire, really had it all: voice, talent, beauty, dancing chops, charisma, joie de vivre and sophistication. She was the first Black performer to attain international stardom, even before Joséphine Baker, with whom she shared a number of similarities (though Hall probably had the superior voice). She was the first singer to scat on record; she helped popularize both the Charleston and the Black Bottom and was considered the epitome of the Flapper; she introduced the world to a number of now-standard songs from the Great American Songbook; she appeared on a rare 1935 Vitaphone short that featured all Black performers; she and her husband owned and ran various night clubs in three different countries, as well as headlining at the legendary Cotton Club; and she headlined the sensational revue Blackbirds of 1928 and several other ground-breaking shows in the 1920s and 1930s. I got to know her work many years back when I happened to find a late-career LP of hers in the basement of an apartment building I was living in. I have been a fan ever since. The number of great musicians with whom she rubbed shoulders is almost mind-boggling (Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Fela Sowande, Joe Turner, and Art Tatum, for starters), and she continued to perform with gusto and sophistication into her late eighties, occasionally returning to her native US from London, where she settled in 1938 and lived until her death. Her range of influence is truly far-flung and her many recordings, made between 1927 and 1989, a generous sampling of which are offered on this episode, continue to bring consistent delight and surprise. Countermelody is the podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Chris Gilbert intrinsically believes that when residents feel seen, heard, and cared for, they become more supportive and trusting of their government.  He argues that "customer service" is the transactional act of doing what needs to be done for the customer. However, municipal hospitality is centered around how you make residents feel during and after the delivery of services to them. The Springfield Township administrator launched Municipal Hospitality Advisors after a fateful celebratory birthday dinner with his wife whereupon he was blown away by the actions of the restaurant owner. That experience and the general approach of the hospitality industry towards providing value and memorable experiences to their guests formed the foundation for Gilbert's trainings. Michael Stahl and Ryan Gallik went through an hour long debrief identifying my core strengths and where I could improve. I enjoyed the process and found the results insightful and illuminating.  In this episode, we discuss leadership development and also break down a program they offer local governments to improve employee mental health. In October, Mike Mortell was caught flat-footed when he learned that his fate was sealed and that he would be fired a couple of weeks later. The city manager for Stuart, Florida didn't take it lying down or run off with his tail between his legs. After enduring months of "social media slander" and the machinations of an elected official who orchestrated his ouster, Mortell had to sit through hours of a council meeting before getting the opportunity to speak -- shortly before his inevitable termination. Mortell made a passionate defense of his tenure and attempted to set the record straight on the allegations leveled against him. This episode features the audio from that meeting and I have to ask -- is this not a masterclass on how to defend your reputation when you are being terminated? Send us a textThis week on Fabulous Film and Friends we're going to pay tribute to the late, great Robert Reford and analyze just why this Hollywood icon belonged on the top of Mt. Olympus long before vanity, sanctimony and crass commercialism ruined his artistry. In other words, before he tarnished his legacy with offensive tripe like The Legend of Bagger Vance, the execrable Indecent Proposal and most especially by appearing as a generic schmoe bad guy #5 in Marvel movies, he was literally the undisputed KING of the Hollywood Hill starting with 1969's Downhill Racer directed by Michael Ritchie co-starring Gene Hackman, Camilla Sparv, Kenneth Kirk, Jim McMullan, Walter Stroud and Dabney Coleman in his ever so brief dreamboat era. Then Redford was his solid oakiest in 1972's Jeremiah Johnson directed by Sydney Pollack and co-starring Will Gear, Delle Bolton, Josh Albee, Paul Benedict, Jack Covin and Stefan Gierasch. And he showed us all how paranoid thrillers were done with 1975's 3 Days of the Condor directed once again by Sydney Pollack and co-starring Faye Dunaway, Max Von Sydow, John Houseman and Cliff RobertsonI'm your host Gino Caputi leading my dream team of scoffers and detractors, lil sis Roseanne Caputi and photobug/actor/gadfly Alex Robertson. Before we hit the trails on career highlights, the synopses:Downhill RacerAn arrogant young skier, David Chappellet, rockets to the top of the U.S. ski team, heedlessly chasing medals, without  regard for his teammates or his Coach who tries without success rein him in. ⸻Jeremiah JohnsonA war-weary loner heads into the Rockies to live off the land and find peace, but the wilderness has other notion, transforming Jeremiah Johnson from naive pilgrim to Legendary Crow Killer, forged by experience and hardship.  ⸻3 Days of the CondorMild-mannered CIA researcher Joe Turner, aka Condor, goes out for lunch and comes back to find everyone he works with dead. Mitch Hammes has a built a national reputation as "That Code Enforcement Guy" having worked himself up front the frontlines as a code enforcement officer all the way to the top as a city administrator. In this episode, we avoid getting into the weeds and examine code enforcement related topics at the 30,000 foot level in a manner that his hopefully more relevant to city managers and executives. In essence, I wanted to give a voice to the code enforcement officers on the frontlines and allow them to speak to their city managers and department heads through the voice and experience of Mitch -- who has walked their path. Cool note! When Mitch stopped by my home in Wichita to record this episode in person, he was a finalist for his first city manager gig. This is the second installment in our new "Black City Manager" series featuring Troy Body, the city manager for Hopkinsville, Kentucky. "I can't love your neighborhood more than you love it," Troy explains as we navigate his philosophical approach to city management. He uses the "pick up the can" metaphor to explain how he believe residents must taker ownership for the condition of their own neighborhoods and community.  At the end of the day, he says that the residents "have to meet me halfway" for true change to take place. He also states that too many city managers oversell and overhype themselves by projecting the idea that they are transformational leaders and that that can lead to conflict with elected officials and stakeholders.  SHOW NOTES: The LinkedIn page for "Black City Managers" Website for "Black City Managers" Troy Body's LinkedIn profile AAME MEMBERSHIP: To join the American Association of Municipal Executives (AAME), sign up at this link: https://community.aame.org/ AAME JOB BOARD: The AAME has a free job board exclusively focused on executive and senior level local government recruitments. In this episode, I call out what I believe to be unethical and deceitful practices by the the city of Valley Center, Kansas in their current search for a new city administrator. The have posted on LinkedIn that the salary range for their next administrator is $115,000 to $200,000. However, their original job postings that are still visible on various job boards listed a salary of range of $105,000 to $145,000. And just two weeks ago they passed a salary ordinance that set the salary range for the city administrator at a maximum of $171,000 and the current city administrator who has been there for six years is only making $152,000. It appears they are attempting to bait candidates to apply with the new exaggerated and unattainable salary range so that they can lowball the finalist. Chris Mann's journey to the city manager's chair was a circuitous, non-traditional one. The California city manager started his journey as a city councilman in his early 20s and would later go on to start his own public relations firm which heavily focused on local government issues and land development. He would then launch a a successful political action committee that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars each election cycle. In this episode, we talk about the "why" behind his journey and an aspect that many are simply unprepared for. We also discuss the reasons behind the city podcast he launched when he was the city manager in Yucaipa, California. She would go on to level unsubstantiated accusations that masked her religious bigotry toward Blaine, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. These claims were embellish and exaggerated by the publisher of the local paper. She had previously applied for a job with the city and was rejected by Oborn.
