It seems pretty much given these days that when we preach and teach we should use images. There's been a lot of talk over the last few years about visual learners. We know the impact that an arresting image can have. As a simple illustration, and if you're listening to the podcast you'll have to use your imagination, let me make a statement, followed by an image. You tell me which one has the most significant effect on you. First the statement: "the man was shocked" Now I will put the image on screen: …….. So, which had more impact on you? What is the relevance here for our preaching and teaching? Well, yesterday as part of my Masters in Theological Studies I was reading this book, “The hidden power of electronic culture" by Shane Hipps. In it he makes the point that since the invention of photography the use of images in communication has come to dominate communication to the downgrading of the significance of written and spoken communication. Is this a good thing, a bad thing, or is it neutral? He writes, “We may be in danger of undoing some of the most valuable aspects of modernity's influence on Christian faith, such as our dependence on the medium of Scripture or the development of leaders who are well-versed in our sacred texts.” 77-78 I like the Bible Project and similar resources. But, are we allowing them to replace our own devotion to the text? It might be easier to watch a video, but the question is, what is it making harder? In particular, the subtle influence of image over word might be shaping the kinds of biblical texts we feel comfortable preaching, and those our congregations like to hear from. Consider, for a moment, Luther. Luther preferred the gospel of John and Paul's writings. He loved the printed word and the abstract teaching of doctrines about Jesus. However, the modern age prefers the Synoptics because they tell the story of Jesus. Hipps says, “Images are simply not well-suited to convey [Paul's] abstract, rational prose.” 79 Last year I preached a series on Colossians, and I remember thinking at the time that it was hard finding images to illustrate points from the lessons. If I am only teaching topics, doctrines and ideas which can be easily represented by images, what other topics, doctrines and ideas am I avoiding? Let's consider the example of Jesus. Granted, he had no access to photographs or other modern visual media. However, he used materials to enhance his teaching: the child he drew into his arms; the fig tree he cursed; the coin he used to answer a question; drawing attention to the real-life example of rich people throwing their money into the temple Treasury and the widow putting in her two coins. If Jesus used such techniques, it seems reasonable to utilise media to enhance the message. However, in preaching and teaching we must aim to keep the Scriptures more prominent because they contain the message in a way that images cannot. The teachings of Jesus had the impact they did, and were remembered without significant use of imagery. Therefore, images can be useful, but plainly are not necessary. It is not either-or, is it? People may have a preference for the written over the visual or the visual over the written, but they should not be seen in opposition to each other because they have different capacities and therefore different purposes. How much do you use images in your teaching and preaching? What guidelines do you have to ensure you use them well? Are you concerned, as I am, that we might be avoiding some parts of Scripture simply because they are hard to illustrate visually? Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Is it theological, technical, practical? Send me your questions or suggestions. What story do we want to tell: The narrative of a girl moving through life and experiences that eventually take her out of her head and into spoken word. The lyrics express this idea that we can only trust and live presently - being true to the moment and finding peace in the not knowing of what's to come, allows for this transformative release of any anxiety and worry. Ultimately, making room for gratitude. In this episode Susan Guthrie speaks with new friend, Andrea Hipps, a Certified Divorce Coach and Author, about her innovative and truly effective approach to moving through the pain of your divorce in order to find your future and to create a healthy two address home for your children. There are few experiences in life that can involve more pain than divorce and many people have great difficulty in moving past that pain, and some never do. Andrea Hipps understands that pain. She experienced it herself years ago when she divorced and and found a way to face that pain and work with it based upon a questions a friend asked her. That question started out with "What would it be like . . ." and although Andrea's initial reaction when the friend asked her was 'Hell no!', she eventually came to see that that "what if" held the key to breaking the cycle of pain and creating a new and wonderful future. If you can't imagine how you are going to co-parent with your ex, this episode is truly a must for you because embedded in the question you must ask yourself, is the key to creating an asset based future for your reconstructed family. A future where your children can thrive in what Andrea calls a "two address home." In this episode you will hear: What the key to breaking your life open is. How her Husband's "Proclamation of Disconnection" led to Andrea's own inward journey. What an Asset Based Approach to the future looks like and how it benefits you and YOUR KIDS! Open Mic #4!! Today we welcome Sarah Hipps back to T&T to discuss race, the world right now, and the power in showing up. Sarah is an incredible fitness and mental wellness advocate and knows how much a certain environment can impact one’s health- physically and mentally. Sarah shares her journey as a person of color in this world thus far and highlights ideas of shaking up our own realities and realizing a degree of brainwashing has occurred. We can justify things if the history books say so right? No. Reality is nothing more than applied meaning, OG philosophy, as I always say. We (my fellow white folks) need to question what realities we currently subscribe to and be open to shifting them greatly. We discuss specific examples on how things have been “marketed” a certain way (#propaganda) and how we have been fed certain “truths”. We cover privilege, colorism, ageism, the difference between a white person’s experience in certain situations vs. a black person’s, and businesses working to do things the right way with inclusivity, diversity, and equality at the forefront of the conversation. In the meantime- work hard to show up, do your homework, research, and keep the heart and mind open. Great, in-depth and enlightening perspective is provided- thank you Sarah, appreciate you and I can’t wait to see what is next for you!! Sarah A. Hipps Hello! I am a Certified Personal Trainer and Behavioral Change Specialist who facilitates clients to be their best selves. My focus is about the entire you. The mental, emotional, and physical health all need to be present for you to truly feel fulfilled. Speaking about mental health, growth, and fulfillment are my passions and I love helping people seek those by being a more dedicated person to their health. Pat Rocco is a figure that doesn’t fit easily into pornography’s history. Pat started making films featuring nude male characters in soft core situations just before 1971’s Boys in the Sand, and he continued to purposefully occupy a unique middle ground where his work showcasing tame, but explicit, gay nudity coexisted alongside other films documenting the emerging gay rights movement, wholesome gay romance, and queer sexual politics. Pat used his camera as a form of activism highlighting gay men's varied sexual interests as well as their passions surrounding society’s changing attitudes about homosexuality. In this episode, we explore the legacy of Pat Rocco and try to figure out where he belongs within pornography’s history. This show features Matthew Hipps, who’s a PhD student in Film Studies at the University of Iowa, and Bryan Wuest, who is a graduate of UCLA’s PhD program in Cinema and Media Studies. Each of them presented papers about Rocco's films at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference in 2018, so I thought it would be great to have them on to talk about the different ways in which they approach his work. This episode has special resonance considering that Rocco would die just seven months after this recording. Matt considers Rocco's travelogue films where he travels to Brazil and Western Europe with a group of gay men to find out what gay life is like outside of the U.S. And Bryan considers how Rocco’s work should be thought of within the history of gay film production. This episode is intended to both spark interest in a figure that isn’t too well known because of the limited exposure his work as received, and to help us expand our ideas about what pornographic culture can be, and how it can help us delve into modes of political activism that we didn’t know were possible. EP 40: Programmatic Tips and Tricks with Justin Hipps To lead off the episode, Tyler and Andy talk big data and how marketers can use customer data to make more appealing offers. Then Justin Hipps, Vice President of Email, Programmatic, and Digital Strategy at HealthLink Dimensions joins the podcast. Justin starts by describing HealthLink Dimensions, a data communications company in the health and pharmaceutical space, as well as how his unique background in psychology has led him to marketing. Then, the conversation shifts to programmatic advertising. Justin argues that the key to successful programmatic advertising is collecting good data and putting that to use with experienced people that can communicate effectively. Tyler and Justin go on to talk about the best strategies for diving into programmatic, namely whether marketers should tackle the discipline in house or whether they should work with partners. Justin advises marketers to not be afraid of trusting a strong partner. More importantly though, he urges marketers to be active in learning about their industries and customers, and to use that knowledge to inform their decisions about how to best execute their campaigns. Tyler adds that marketers should always be asking great questions to others in their industry. Justin then shares his preferences when it comes to programmatic software and leaves listeners with the advice to keep the narrative and story close to their hearts, and to be passionate about their work. In this edition of The TREC Podcast, we’re previewing next week’s FightNight 30! Listen in as 2018 FightNight Chair Chris Hipps of CBRE chats with TREC’s resident boxing expert, Steve Crosson (Capright)! Known as TREC’s resident boxing expert and one of the board members credited with creating FightNight, Crosson is a boxing lifer. He has refereed World Boxing Council title bouts in the United States, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Venezuela and Mexico, and has served the organization as its treasurer and U.S. spokesman. Though Crosson has also been part of more than 50 black-tie charitable boxing events across the country, he tells Hipps that the others don’t quite compare to the one that started it all, right here in Dallas. TREC will celebrate its 30th FightNight on April 26 at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Anatole. Tickets to FightNight and its afterparty are available now at http://www.recouncil.com, but please note that you will not need to purchase an afterparty ticket if you have a FightNight ticket. You may also purchase presale FightNight raffle tickets or donate to the event on our website through Monday, April 23. Proceeds from this year’s FightNight benefit the Dallas Catalyst Project, a new three-year philanthropic initiative TREC is undertaking in partnership with the Cornerstone Baptist Church, St. Philip’s School & Community Center, CitySquare and the iconic Forest Theater to provide grants and professional services to revitalize part of the South Dallas-Fair Park neighborhood.

While it wasn’t full-on crazy this weekend, we certainly had our share of notable upsets, what the heck moments and yes … the Tampa Bay Buccaneers losing yet again. It’s tough being a Bucs fan, but then again, I was a Bucs fan during the creamsicle days, so I know what it’s like to be the only Bucs fan sitting alone at a table, looking at the bottom of an empty glass.Instead, I was proactive. I shunned the Bucs, happy with an atrociously ugly football win by ye olde alma mater on Saturday against some school in Fort Lauderdale that doesn’t have a wrestling program. That makes the meaningless on my college sports landscape. On Sunday, I ventured South to Rochester, Minnesota to check out my first high school wrestling of the season, the InterMat JJ Classic. Yes, you’re right, seemingly every important wrestling event outside of the state championship seems to happen in Rochester. There’s the Minnesota Christmas Tournament, The Clash, sometimes the NJCAA national championships are there. Oh, and Mike Busch State Farm is there. Home. Life. Auto. Mike Busch is your man. His mustache will give Andy Bisek’s a run for its money. No, Mike’s not a sponsor, just a longtime friend. Anytime I can mention Mike in anything wrestling related, it makes me smile.Anyway, as I was saying, I was down for the InterMat JJ Classic, my first gig after basically becoming independent last week. If you want a bit of a rundown about why I decided to focus more on the Mat Talk Podcast Network, read my blog at mattalkonline.com/blog10. I won’t take up too much of your time with nonsense, because Andrew Hipps of InterMat’s using this to feature two of the interviews I did with champions at the JJ Classic, Mark Hall and Fredy Stroker. If you listen carefully, you’ll even hear young Mr. Hall give us his top six college choices as it stands right now. We already know Stroker’s Minnesota Bound, no, not the show Minnesota Bound, which comes on right after the late local news here on Sunday. If you’re a hunter, you’d dig it.And I’ve got to give Andrew Hipps of InterMat a tip of the cap. This is the fifth year he’s run the JJ Classic. It’s not about setting rankings or being a huge mega tournament. Hipps wanted to create a tournament to honor is friend Justin “J.J.” Kukowski, who passed away from brain cancer in 2007. All proceeds from the event went to the Justin Kukowski Center, a cancer support center in the Twin Cities. Great cause. Kudos to everyone who showed up.STROKER INTERVIEW at 8:41HALL INTERVIEW at 11:43Now to the mats:First up, the NYAC’s not know as the NYAC anymore, at least not the tournament as it was renamed the Bill Farrell International in honor of the late, great Bill Farrell. I won’t fill your ears with stories about how Bill was this and that, because I only got to know the man very late in his life. Dan Gable once told a story about his famous quote, “Once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easy,” and the hook to that story was he thought he might have stolen it from Bill Farrell! With freestyle on the mats on Sunday, there were some real eye-opening results. At 57kg, Northern Iowa grad Joe Colon of Titan Mercury won gold, beating the NYAC’s Danny Mitcheff 13-6. Mitcheff upended Sam Hazewinkel in the quarters and pinned Andrew Hochstrasser in the semis, while Colon beat the NYAC’s Brandon Precin in the semis and Angel Escobedo of the NYAC in the quarters. Nice day for Joe.At 61kg, foreign wrestlers went 1-2-3 with Titan Mercury’s Kyle Hutter finishing fourth. At 65kg, Jason Chamberlain beat freestyle novice Evan Henderson 8-3 in the finals. Henderson didn’t wrestle in Fargo, but it’s a strong freestyle showing for sure. He’s redshirting this year for North Carolina. Canada’s Haislan Garcia beat Adam Hall 3-1 in the finals at 70.Hey Huskie up for Bloomsburg grad Richard Perry. Never an All-American in college, Perry beat 2012 Olympic silver medalist Jaimie Espinal of Puerto Rico,

An Easter message on the unexpected meaning of the resurrection in our lives.
A teaching on the things we like least about ourselves, but that God loves most. And what happens when we accept them.
