12-2-2023 Passed iBall Show. John spends this program venting about Major League Baseball's injustice when it comes to its Hall of Fame. John's suggestion to partially right this wrong includes the opportunity its writers have to elect (select) Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, and Gary Sheffield THIS year. John brings up the ridiculous "character clause" which has been used to selectively support Baseball's political agenda. John questions the character of "Hall of Famers" Kenesaw Mountain Landis, Bud Selig, Cap Anson, Rogers Hornsby, and others who have may not been the best people. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John brings up Canadian Heavyweight Champion Tommy Burns, the first NFL Wide Receiver Don Hutson, Dan Marino, Gerry Cheevers, Patrick Roy, Willie Brown, Monica Seles, and Jean Beliveau. He also shares an interesting point or two about Eiji Sawamura: you would be interested in knowing who he is.

Sherril was living in Delray Beach, Florida when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018.  She went through treatment in Florida, including a mastectomy. Having grown up in Massachusetts, and the daughter of Bruins Hall of Fame goalie Gerry Cheevers, Cheryl was very familiar with Dana-Farber. Cheryl decided to go for a second opinion with Dr. Erica Mayer at Dana-Farber's Susan F. Smith Center for Women's Cancers following her treatment in Florida, just to make sure everything was on the right track.  She was just finishing up a telehealth consult when she told Dr. Mayer that she thought she felt a swollen lymph node.  That revelation set off alarm bells for Dr. Mayer and Cheryl was subsequently diagnosed with a different type of breast cancer in March 2020 at the start of the COVID pandemic shutdown. Her treatment included chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and targeted therapy for her specific type of cancer. Because patients could not have visitors with them during the shutdown, Cheryl took money she raised from a golf tournament to help pay for little gift baskets for other patients at Dana-Farber to help boost their spirits during this difficult time. After overwhelming response to our Episode 194 exploration of hockey's epic 1972 "Summit Series," we gas up the Zamboni for a return visit into Canada/Russian competition lore - this time for the equally intriguing (but often overlooked) sequel Summit Series of 1974 - with sports author/historian Craig Wallace (The Forgotten Summit: A Canadian Perspective on the 1974 Canada-Soviet Hockey Series).   While ostensibly a "round two" between the world's top national hockey programs, the 1974 Series differed in that the Canadian side was comprised exclusively of players from the World Hockey Association (WHA) - a major preseason promotional boost for the fledgling two-year-old circuit still struggling to gain a pro foothold against the mighty NHL.   As a result, wildly popular Canadian WHA stars like Winnipeg's Bobby Hull, Houston's Gordie Howe and Cleveland's Gerry Cheevers - each forbidden by the NHL from playing two years earlier - saw their first national team action, joined by returning series veterans Paul Henderson, Frank Mahovlich and Pat Stapleton.   Despite a strong start in the first two games, Team Canada could not replicate its trailblazing success from their 1972 exploits; the Soviets won the series (4 wins, 3 ties, 1 loss) - but as Wallace reveals, the games were close, extremely competitive and wildly entertaining - replete with just as much drama and excitement as its predecessor (and even better uniforms).

A nostalgic look back at our favorite heroes and legends who wore the red, white and blue for the rangers during the 60's,70's and 80's. In Episode # 31 we look back on the 1972 Stanley Cup finals between the NY Rangers and their hated rivals the Boston Bruins. * First Stanley Cup final's meeting between these two clubs since 1929. * Rangers defeated the defending Stanley Cup Champion Canadiens and the Chicago Blackhawks while the Bruins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Blues to reach the Finals * Bruins finished first in the league in points and were led by Superstars Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr and an incredible lineup of tough and skilled players that excelled in penalty killing and the power play. * The Rangers finished with the second most points and were led by Superstar  Brad Park, the GAG line of Hadfield ,Ratelle and Gilbert (although Ratelle sustained a devastating ankle injury earlier in the season and just started playing again in the finals) as well as Star Goaltender Edie Giacomin who was also playing with a knee injury. * The Bruins defeated the Rangers in six games for their second Cup in three seasons. * The Bruins devastated the Rangers while shorthanded scoring  three shorthanded goals in the series ( Derek Sanderson and Eddie Westfall were brilliant). Both teams tallied six power play goals * Bruins Goaltending was the difference in the series as Eddie Johnston was outstanding and Gerry Cheevers (who went undefeated in 33 straight games during the season) pitched a shutout in the Cup clinching game six at MSG. * The Bruins size, strength and physicality especially down low ( where the Bruin forwards always seemed to outnumber the Rangers) caused the Rangers all sorts of problems in the series. Bruins forwards Wayne Cashman and Ken Hodge were particularly dominant.

Jim "Seaweed" Pettie was a colorful and rambunctious goalie for the Boston Bruins In episode 48,  we remember the life and career of the fun-loving Boston Bruins Goaltender Jim Seaweed Pettie, who passed away on August 31, 2019 at the age of 65. A 9th round draft pick by the Bruins in 1973, Seaweed played in 118 games with the IHL Dayton Gems between the 1973-74 and 1975-76 seasons. During the 1975-76 season, Pettie went 12-3 in the post season to lead the Gems to the Turner Cup championship. As a goalie, Seaweed was rambunctious and combative as illustrated in that 75-76 campaign, when he amassed 145 minutes in penalties  —  the fifth-highest total on the team. Teammate Steve Langdon recently said: “I would say he was probably the toughest goalie to ever play the game.” The Bruins promoted Pettie in 1976-77 season, placing him with the AHL Rochester Americans, where he would play 43 games while posting an excellent record of 26-15-1. During that year he also played one NHL game with the Bruins  — a victory over Bobby Orr and the Chicago Blackhawks. At the start of 1977 training camp, Pettie was roomed with author George Plimpton, who was doing research for his upcoming book, "Open Net." Because of that, Pettie was often referenced in the book. After another stint in Rochester, Pettie was up with the Bruins for most of the 1978-79 season, going 8-6-2 in 19 games as the back-up to Gilles Gilbert and Gerry Cheevers.  This would be Seaweed's final tour in the NHL. In retirement he remained in the Rochester area and was active with the Amerks Alumni. Bruins legend and Alumni President Rick Middleton joins us today to recall Seaweed Pettie and his unlikely role in, what was almost,  one of the Bruins all-time most historic  goals.   ITunes/Apple Podcasts SoundCloud Stitcher Twitter Facebook Instagram Google Play Mark Willand Pro Hockey Alumni WHA Hockey Boston Bruins Alumni You Tube
